‘Subway Takes’ Is a TikTok Hit. Kareem Rahma Planned It That Way
Image
Kareem Rahma has a funny saying right now.

Unlike the average commuter, Rahma steps onto the subway with at least two camera people when he films his hit interview series Subway Takes. So people are usually surprised to see Rahma capturing footage on the side, sometimes of a guest, the setup, or the mundane bits in between.

“People ask me what I’m doing. I’ll go, ‘Oh, that’s for the documentary,’” he tells me on a recent gusty Wednesday in Brooklyn. The documentary in question? It doesn’t exist,...

The Accidental Getaway Driver Is the Year's Most Emotional Story Yet
Image
In a world of superhero movies and action extravaganzas, it's hard to find stories led by emotion and character study, and it's even harder for those films to get a wider audience to share their message with viewers. But in the case of Sing J. Lee's The Accidental Getaway Driver, it's a movie that tries to beat the odds and deliver a story with heart and a message of kindness that audiences need now more than ever. The best part is that it's a film that does it in style with a distinct visual language and powerfully emotional performances from its cast that audiences won't soon forget.

The Accidental Getaway Driver follows an elderly San Francisco taxi driver named Long (Hiệp Trần Nghĩa), who picks up a trio of men late at night on his day off. As it turns out, they are criminals who are looking for a...

Martin Scorsese Sets Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Blunt & Dwayne Johnson Drama
Image
Martin Scorsese has finally found his new movie, and he has assembled an eclectic cast that includes long-time collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio, 2024 Academy Award nominee Emily Blunt, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Scorsese is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers ever to live, and since the release of Killers of the Flower Moon, he has been circling many projects. Fans wondered if the Sinatra biopic, a film centered on Jesus Christ, or the recently announced The Devil in the White City would be his next film. It turns out none of those projects are up next for Scorsese.

Deadline confirmed that Martin Scorsese will direct an untitled crime drama that follows a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss in the 1960s and '70s based on a real-life person who battled encroaching rivals in Hawaii for control of organized crime on the island. The film is being written by Nick Bilton, a journalist...

‘Presence’ Brings a Ghost’s Perspective to UK Cinemas
Image
Steven Soderbergh, the acclaimed director of Contagion, Ocean’s 11, and Traffic, has made a highly anticipated return to theatrical releases with Presence, a supernatural horror film that hit UK and Irish cinemas on Friday, 24th January. This marks the filmmaker’s first widespread cinema release in years, after a series of streaming-first projects.

Presence promises a unique perspective on the horror genre, being told entirely from the point of view of a ghost. The film stars Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), and Chris Sullivan (This Is Us), and has already garnered an impressive 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes following its debut at Sundance last year. With a script penned by David Koepp, the screenwriter behind Jurassic Park and Spider-Man, Presence blends gripping storytelling with the atmospheric tension Soderbergh is known for.

Shot during the challenging conditions of the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, the production was made possible through...

Presence Review — Steven Soderbergh Makes a Chilling Family Drama Under the Guise of a Ghost Movie
Image
Although it premiered at Sundance almost a year ago, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence is finally making its way to theaters, and audiences may well find themselves surprised by it both formally and narratively. A refreshing spin on a familiar genre, Presence manages to perfectly tread the line between challenging audiences and delivering satisfying entertainment.

Presence Review

Presence follows a family who, after moving to a new house in the suburbs following a tragedy, begin to believe that they are being haunted by an unseen presence. At the core of the film is a relatively standard haunted house story, but this is only the framework upon which something much more intriguing and complex is built.

Like much of Soderbergh’s recent output, Presence is as much an experiment in form as it is anything else. He shot the movie using Dslr cameras as opposed to the typical high-grade professional camera equipment,...

'South Park' Co-Creator Promises a Massive Comeback for the Animated Comedy in Latest Update
Image
2024 marked a down year for South Park. For only the second time since the long-running adult animated comedy began in 1997, the series went a year without releasing any new episodes. The only new content set in the sleepy little mountain town in Colorado was another Paramount+ movie special, The End of Obesity, released in May, and the poorly-received game South Park: Snow Day. It marked an unusual break for a series that has thus far spawned 321 episodes and the Oscar-nominated Bigger, Longer, & Uncut, prompting some speculation as to what caused the freeze in production. Fortunately for fans who have been eagerly awaiting Season 27, the wait shouldn't be much longer. Series co-creator Matt Stone has since confirmed in November that 2025 won't be as dry with both a new season and a new Paramount+ special on the way.

‘Nosferatu’s Bloody Good Weekend, ‘A Complete Unknown’ Sings – Specialty Box Office
Image
Robert Eggers Nosferatu from Focus Features sank its teeth into the Christmas box office. With James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown – Searchlight Pictures’ top-grossing film since it was acquired by Disney in 2019 – they ushered in a heady post-Covid moment for indie films at no. 3 and 5 at the domestic box office. Yes, both are labels of major studios but indie labels going for something different than Mufasa: The Lion King or Wicked.

The space for grownup films, for indie fare, had been steadily improving this fall and the latest numbers are the strongest indication yet that theatrical is back for a broader range of movies – and horror for Christmas.

A24’s Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman also grossed $4.39 million for the weekend for a cume of $7.2 million and a no. 7 spot.

Distributors have been saying for some time that a rising tide will lift all boats and with this holiday frame it finally may have happened.

In Friends, several Hollywood A-listers made cameo appearances, but only a few manage to grab the attention of the viewers with their storylines. The actor in question was Dermot Mulroney, who played Gavin Mitchell in the show.

Gavin was introduced in the later seasons of the sitcom. But his chemistry with Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel quickly became popular, with many viewers wanting her to end her on-again, off-again romance with Ross. Watch This Film Noir Classic If You Want More Sweaty Desperation Like Uncut Gems
Image
So, you've survived the experience of watching the Safdie Brothers' anxiety-inducing gambling thriller "Uncut Gems" without your heart exploding, eh? Admittedly, very few movies can match that film's high-strung sense of mania and tension, but if you're looking for a classic Hollywood flick that operates in a somewhat similar but lower key pitch, we have a recommendation.

Alexander Mackendrick's "Sweet Smell of Success," a noir drama from 1957, stars the great Burt Lancaster as a powerful New York City gossip columnist whose daily articles are so powerful, they can make or break careers. Tony Curtis ("Some Like It Hot," "The Defiant Ones") plays a low-level press agent striving to graduate from being disrespected to become a big shot, and the story explores the lengths the agent will go -- and the lives he may ruin -- in order to please the writer so he can finally achieve the success he desires.

Pixels Cast, Character & Cameo Guide
Image
The cast of Pixels includes several well-known Hollywood actors, as well as many supporting roles and fun cameos from the world of film, TV, and gaming. Despite not being considered one of Adam Sandler's best-ranked movies, Pixels certainly includes a fun premise. It tells the story of extraterrestrial invaders of Earth who once found a video game-infused time capsule in space and mistook it as a declaration of war. In another Adam Sandler and Kevin James collaboration, the main cast of Pixels use their video game expertise to repel this alien invasion that comes in the form of game characters.

Due to this unique premise, Pixels can almost be counted as a video game adaptation movie. Although it is not based on any one game and does not include a storyline found in a video game like Detective Pikachu, Warcraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, or Mortal Kombat of late, it...

‘Notice to Quit’ Review: Michael Zegen Stars in a Scrappy Indie Comedy Equal Parts ‘Paper Moon’ and ‘Uncut Gems’
Image
New York is a city constantly in survival mode — it’s a harried concrete haven for people who need a measure of desperation (financial or otherwise) just to get out of bed in the morning. There are so many things to hate about this place, but you have to love it because leaving is the only option less viable than sticking around. And to do that, you have to love the fact that everyone around you is in the same boat (which is why so many of us have adopted complaining as a love language unto its own). Solitude is hard to come by in the center of the world, but it can be all too easy to feel like you’re alone. The trick is to appreciate that you’re not.

The frayed and frequently despicable hero of Simon Hacker’s (frayed but frequently likable) “Notice to Quit” will...

‘South Park’ Holds the Most Obvious Guinness World Record Ever
Image
We know for a fact that Trey Parker and Matt Stone couldn’t have stuffed South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut with more profanity if they tried — because they did.

When Parker, Stone and Paramount Pictures first submitted the 1999 film to the MPAA for evaluation, the dubiously diligent censors sent back the film with a dreaded, unmarketable Nc-17 rating due to excessive profanity. The South Park team then re-edited the franchise’s first feature length film to make it more palatable to the movie business’ most venal finger-waggers, only to get another Nc-17 result. Then, Parker and Stone made even more cuts to the cuss words. Another Nc-17.

Eventually, the South Park duo got fed up with the back-and-forth and asked the MPAA to tell them exactly what prevented South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut from getting a passable R-rating, and the agency noted that the most recent cut of...

The Glorious Songs of South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut Ranked
Image
On June 30 1999, Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s infamous creation, South Park, made its leap from Comedy Central to the silver screen with South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Possibly the fastest example of a TV series making the jump to film, South Park was greenlit right at the end of the first season, and production started during the second and third seasons. Bigger, Longer and Uncut would go on to fully highlight the sheer magnitude of Parker and Stone’s comedic and satirical strengths, working as a metatextual commentary on censorship and scapegoating while dealing with its own veritable censors at the MPAA.

But more notably, the South Park movie showed how much of a musical theater-loving nut Parker was by fully embedding singing-and-dancing flair in his and Stone’s first animated feature venture. (Remember that Parker’s directorial debut was the Troma-released horror comedy Cannibal! The Musical.)

"You can also sign up for Paramount+ to watch many seasons of Comedy Central shows.”

Inside Out 2 Takes Inspiration From a Surprising Adam Sandler Movie
Image
Inside Out 2 draws from Adam Sandler's anxiety-inducing Uncut Gems for a fresh perspective on emotions and mental health. The animation team uses shaky cinematography techniques from Uncut Gems to create dynamic visuals and explore new angles in Inside Out 2. Anxiety takes center stage in the sequel, with Maya Hawke voicing the character who challenges the original emotions in Riley's mind.

This months Disney and Pixar sequel, Inside Out 2, will take inspiration from a surprising Adam Sandler movie. Rather than the more obvious (and family-friendly) choices of Hotel Transylvania or Bedtime Stories, or perhaps even his best-known comedies such as Happy Gilmore or Grown Ups, Inside Out 2 instead looks to Sandlers 2019 crime thriller Uncut Gems for cues on how to portray feelings of anxiety.

In a new feature from Animation Magazine, anxiety being a core influence on Inside Out 2 led director of layout photography Adam Habib...

Howard's pursuit of money leads to his demise in the tumultuous ending of Uncut Gems. The film highlights the fleeting pleasure of greed, with Howard's temporary success overshadowed by his fate. Adam Sandler defends the controversial ending, arguing that Howard had to meet his unfortunate end.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Uncut Gems.

The Uncut Gems ending comes almost as a sigh of relief, relinquishing the audience from two hours of unnerving and unrestrained stress courtesy of its main character, Howard Ratner. When the name of Adam Sandler is associated with a film project in the industry, the first thing that comes to the audiences’ mind is the genre of it being another comedy from the star, and rightfully so. The Curse Ending, Explained with Analysis
Image
Nathan Fielder has been deconstructing what's real and what isn't in our hyper-saturated media landscape for a decade on American television, from Nathan for You to The Rehearsal. In The Curse, he interrogates this further, but also explores what's real and what isn't in relationships, in art, and in social justice. Co-creating and co-starring in the show with Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems and Good Time) and playing opposite Emma Stone in her most complicated performance yet, Fielder delivered another unforgettable work of art in The Curse, though it remains his most depressing and probably his most frustrating project yet.

The Curse is probably the most divisive television show of the season. The Showtime series follows a young married couple, Asher (Fielder) and Whitney (Stone), who have been deeply involved with the real estate market in different ways. Whitney has tried to distance herself from her wealthy slum lord parents, despite...

‘The Curse’ Episode 1 Recap & Spoilers: Are Whitney And Asher Doing Something Great?
Image
From the minds behind The Rehearsal (Nathan Fielder) and Uncut Gems (Benny Safdie) comes a mockumentary/found footage style HGTV spoof about a couple trying to create The new big eco-friendly city and “do good for the community.” Set in Española, New Mexico, the series is completely riveting while simultaneously being absolutely revolting for most of the hour-long first episode. Trust us when we say you won’t be able to take anything seriously for more than 5 minutes at a time. Episode 1 introduces the couple, Whitney and Asher Seigel, played by Emma Stone (!) and Fielder, who are working on a documentary to show off their house-flipping skills in a show rightly titled Flipanthropy (oops).

Spoilers Ahead

What Happens In The Episode?

Within the first 5 minutes of the show, we’re left cringing thanks to Dougie (played by the enigma that is Safdie), who happens to force a woman with cancer...

Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Steve Lacy in the Concert Hall – Sydney Opera House
Ruban Nielson
Sydney – Monday 6 November, 2023. The Sydney Opera House today announced two electrifying contemporary music events over summer with genre-raiding psych-rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra making their Concert Hall debut on January 30, and alternative R&b star Steve Lacy performing two shows in-the-round on 31 January and 1 February 2024.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s (Umo) appearance follows the March release of their definitive fifth album, V – an exquisite collection of songs that evokes the 70s rock and 80s pop of frontman Ruban Nielson’s childhood, while exploring love, loss and his Hawaiian heritage. The album makes a strong case for itself as his sun-bleached masterpiece, earning a 4.5 star review from Uncut and a place on The Guardian’s ‘best albums of 2023 so far’ list.

Umo initially achieved runaway success following the covert release of an anonymously penned track, ‘Ffunny Ffriends’, on Band Camp (2011). They’d go on to release five albums over the next 12 years, each...

‘Dicks: The Musical’ Stumbles Its Own Punchline With Subpar Raunchy Songs
Image
Musicals have always been a bit dirty. This is such a well-known fact that South Park even dedicated an entire episode to the way stealthily bawdy musical numbers can get people hot and steamy. In between the lines of classic lyrics in vintage musicals are double entendres and sexual innuendos that flew over the heads of many viewers. Unsurprisingly, as the years wore on, musicals made in the 1980s onward took this trait and ran with it, making the previous subtext of raunchiness very flagrant text. Audiences loved the dissonance between “squeaky-clean musicals” and sex jokes, resulting in projects ranging from South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut to Avenue Q to the new Larry Charles movie Dicks: The Musical.

10 Black Comedy Movies To Satisfy A Twisted Sense Of Humor
Image
Dark humor can be found in even the most bleak and harrowing situations, leaving viewers amused by themes that seem inherently downbeat. Black comedies like Burn After Reading, Heathers, and Sorry To Bother You use satire and humor to tackle serious subjects such as the War on Terror, teenage bullying, and capitalism. Films like Parasite and American Psycho blend humor with psychological horror, creating an unsettling and disturbing yet hilariously funny viewing experience.

While everyone loves a fun, light-hearted uplifting movie, sometimes a darker, bleaker, but still somehow hilarious black comedy movie is what many viewers really want. Comedy movies come in many different shades. For every sweet romantic comedy like Sleepless in Seattle or When Harry Met Sally, there is a filthy cartoon comedy like South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut or Fritz the Cat. While some viewers seek out silly, self-aware spoofs like Airplane or Scary Movie, other...

Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler cut himself to get out of depression
Image
Black Sabbath’s bassist-and-lyricist Geezer Butler had the habit of cutting himself to “get relief” from his depression.

He has dished on in great detail about his battle with his mental health over the years, and how he would self-harm so he wouldn’t be focused on his mental state, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“People didn’t understand. You’d go to the doctor and he’d say, ‘Go and have a couple of pints’ or, ‘Go and walk the dog,’ ” he said of his battle with mental illness in an interview with Uncut magazine about his candid memoir, “Into the Void, From Birth to Black Sabbath – and Beyond”.

“I thought, ‘Well, that’s not going to help me. Nobody talked about it and nobody understood it. I just thought in the end it was a normal thing to be depressed and I started cutting myself to get relief’.

“One day...

The supermodel appeared in a few high-profile music videos, including Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," before making her feature film debut in David Fincher's Gone Girl as a student having an affair with Ben Affleck's professor. Sebastian Bear-McClard, Good Time and Uncut Gems Producer, Accused of Sexual Misconduct
Image
Sebastian Bear-McClard, the estranged husband of Emily Ratajkowski who produced such films as the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time and Uncut Gems, has been accused of sexual misconduct by several women in a new report by Variety.

In statements reviewed by Variety, young women accused Bear-McClard of using his power as a producer to rope them into unequal sexual relationships, as well as creating uncomfortable work environments. One woman, who was 17 at the time, recalled the producer messaging her on Instagram about appearing in Good Time, promising screen time with star Robert Pattinson, without providing any specifics. She allegedly ended up being naked for the scene, standing in front of nearly a dozen male cast and crew members — including Josh and Benny Safdie. Pattinson was not on set that day; instead, she was paired with an actor who had recently been released from prison before being cast in the film. Bear-McClard...

‘Uncut Gems,’ ‘Good Time’ Producer Accused of Sexual Misconduct with Teenage Girls
Image
Sebastian Bear-McClard is facing accusations of sexual misconduct, grooming, and assault related to multiple young women, a new report in Variety alleges.

The “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time” producer, who co-founded Elara Pictures in 2014 with writer-directors Josh and Benny Safdie, allegedly abused his power on set during the casting process and auditions for the indie films, distributed by A24.

An unnamed woman alleged in an interview with Variety that Bear-McClard reached out to her via Instagram when she was 17 years old in early 2016. The woman was approached to audition for a small role on “Good Time,” the Safdie brothers’ feature. Per Variety, the woman “came from an impoverished background in New York” and when she arrived on set, she was surprised to discover her scene involved being naked amongst nearly a dozen male cast and crew members, including writer-directors Josh and Benny Safdie.

The woman recalled that she “was utterly stunned and felt terrified.
