Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical Joanna Gleason, in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm.

Chicago – Neither Hollywood nor purely Broadway, Disney’s big-screen adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Into the Woods” finds a charming home on Hollyway.

Even if you’re not a “musical kind of person,” I challenge you not to want to sing along to the catchy tunes or laugh at the intentionally overdramatic comedy.

These words, as sung by Little Red Riding Hood in the classic, Stephen Sondheim musical, echoed my sentiments as I walked into Disney's film adaptation of Into the Woods, a play I hold in very high regard and one of the seminal musicals that developed my love for the form. My cause for concern stemmed from director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine), whom, to this point, I don't believe has made a particularly good movie. Sitting down in the theater, my heart was pounding. Disney has released two new clips for their upcoming fairytale musical Into the Woods. The first clip features the Witch (Meryl Streep) telling the Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) what they need to do in order to get their curse reversed. The second clip features the Baker and his wife exchanging the magic beans for Jack’s (Daniel Huttlestone) cow. The movie seems to be getting decent reviews, and I'm looking forward to taking my kids to go see it.

Disney has released a new scene from Into the Woods that puts yesterday's clip into context. The previous video showed The Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) trading young Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) some "magic beans" for his cow. Today's scene shows Meryl Streep's The Witch revealing to this couple that four things need to be obtained in order for her to create a potion that will "reverse the curse." The first item is the "cow as white as milk," followed by the "cape as red as blood," "the hair as yellow as corn" and "the slipper as pure as gold." The cow naturally belongs to Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk, with the cape surely a reference to Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), the hair belonging to Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy) and the glass slipper of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick).

We’re at the edge of our seats waiting for a peek into the fabulous tunes “Into the Woods” has to offer and today (December 4), we finally heard a sample from Anna Kendrick singing “On the Steps of the Palace” as Cinderella.

In addition to the snippet of the catchy song, the clip presents behind-the-scenes footage of the “Drinking Buddies” star along with an interview with Meryl Streep who portrays the Witch.

“Into the Woods” debuted on Broadway in 1987 and starred Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason. It brings together the Brother’s Grimm’s magical stories surrounding the plot of the baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) as they try to start a family.

Disney’s big screen production also stars Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Daniel Huttlestone as Jack and the Beanstalk and MacKenzie Mauzy as Rapunzel.

Another film enters the awards season fray.

On November 22, the cast and filmmakers of Into The Woods – Meryl Streep, James Corden, director Rob Marshall, screenwriter James Lapine, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt, Christine Baranski and Tracey Ullman – took part in a Q&A following a screening of the film at the DGA Theater in which film fans had an opportunity to engage in a live question and answer discussion on the film in New York City.

Composer Stephen Sondheim was unable to attend Saturday night’s screening and sent his regards in a note read by actress Meryl Streep.
