Children's movies, especially animated features, should be given more credit for their masterful and artistic storytelling, which can stay with people for years. There are plenty of iconic and beloved stories from all ages and studios, but sometimes, these stories can get more sinister than audiences expect.
Some of the most famous children's movies also include some of the most horrific and devastating deaths in cinematic history. For these to be in children's films makes it even more sour as their audiences will most likely retain that memory forever. Whether for better or for worse, children's films can sometimes have the most horrific deaths to ever see put to screen.
Ray Finally Gets to Evangeline The Princess and the Frog (2009)
The Princess and the Frog is easily one of Disney's most underrated princess movies of all time. Audiences adored the classic and immaculate animation, catchy songs, beautiful story and especially its lively characters.

From its clinical opening moments—a series of wide, indoor, static shots of a somewhat abandoned house in need of renovation—Harry Aspinwall’s feature film directorial debut, the coldly sparse chamber piece “The House Was Not Hungry Then” (2025), establishes the purely observational approach applied to its poltergeist horror story; an ominous sequence that not only displays the limited geography of the film’s single location, a coverage consisting of six different vistas but also lulls the audience into a sedated state of passive witnessing, assuming the role of onlookers.
The timing of this film is rather incidental, to say the least, for the minimal restraint and unobtrusive detachment in terms of presentation feel like an economic cross-breed between the visual gimmicks of two very recent movies by high-profile filmmakers: Robert Zemeckis’ deeply flawed and tedious technical exercise “Here” (2024), a centuries-spanning film shot entirely from a single angle, and Steven Soderbergh...

Stephen King's collection of works is so vast that even now, after almost 50 years of vigorous TV and movie adaptations, there are still stories that never made it to the big screen. That's about to change for at least one of them. The Monkey, first published in 1980, appeared in his seminal short story collection Skeleton Crew in 1985. The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.

The best animated movies for adults prove there is no reason to view the medium as just for children. Since the early days of cinema, animation has been a big draw, especially for families with Disney's animated projects (as well as their various competitors) bringing wondrous fairy tales to life even before the first color film. While the best-animated movies often appeal to all ages, with parents enjoying the thrilling stories as much as their children, there's often been a misconception that cartoons were only made for younger audiences.
Luckily, as with animated adult comedies on television, films fight against those perceptions and deliver brilliant animated movies tailored to an adult audience. While this sometimes means they include violence and sexuality seen in live-action R-rated movies, it also means there are deeper and more mature stories that might not appeal to kids...

A selection of animated kids' movies are the perfect fare for the Halloween season, offering a variety of delightful ghouls and ghosts. These titles range from lighthearted adventures with Halloween trappings to genuinely terrifying nightmare fuel, making it surprising that they would be considered children's movies. Such movies and TV shows are great transitional horror to introduce kids to the genre, at a time of year when everyone is embracing the spooky spirit.
A handful of amazing Halloween TV specials make for short movie-like experiences, while several movies people mistakenly think Tim Burton directed are also movie fan favorites for October. Despite being marketed towards children, not all of these perfect Halloween movies have a happy ending, sometimes concluding on a bittersweet or ambiguous note. The way they blend fantasy and horror curates experiences that are somber in visuals and tone but still have the whimsical personality of the best animated Disney movies.

"Saturday Night" is playing in theaters everywhere now, showcasing the chaotic chronicle of the 90 minutes preceding the first episode of the late night sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" (or at least the show that would eventually have that title). Jason Reitman directed the film, and he also co-wrote the script with producer Gil Kenan (director of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire"), both bringing a long-time love for "SNL" with them. In fact, Reitman was able to live the rare dream of writing at "SNL" for a week. Meanwhile, Kenan's love for "SNL" began in the '90s with the likes of "SNL" legends like Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, and Chris Farley, but it carries through to this day.
Being a die-hard "SNL" fan myself, I was thrilled to speak with both Reitman and Kenan about piecing together the early history of "Saturday Night Live" into this electric film. It's funny,...

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)
Of this year’s top 10 contenders for Best Original Screenplay, nine were written, at least in part, by the directors. The exception is “Challengers,” which Justin Kuritzkes wrote for director Luca Guadagnino. He also adapted the William S. Burroughs novel “Queer” for this busy helmer and he could well contend over in Best Adapted Screenplay for that.
“Challengers” is, at its heart, a romance. Love, albeit short-lived, is also the subject of the frontrunner in this race, Sean Baker‘s “Anora.

The story of ImageMovers Studios' animation wing is a short and sad tale of Robert Zemeckis and his attempts to present a new, relatively untested style of filmmaking. Motion capture has been an industry-standard in live-action films for quite some time, giving us iconic performances considered impossible to deliver before its conception. However, to fully animate a film in that style with no intervention from real actors or sets was rarely implemented in video games, let alone cinema. It makes sense the jump would happen eventually. After all, it's digital rotoscoping, and that's a practice that's as old as the medium, and ImageMovers Studios tried it. Only five films were made under this studio on a sliding scale of quality, with its closure leaving behind several unfinished projects. Monster House is generally believed to be the best, with a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but the last film by the studio...

For as long as there have been films, there have been filmmakers attempting to enhance the theatrical experience through the use of gimmicks. From the red-eyed skeletons of William Castle to the “odorama” cards of John Waters’ Polyester, gimmicks are the puns of the filmmaking world: memorable and effective in small quantities, but annoying when overused.
That’s why I get why so many people reject 3D cinema. After all, modern theater screens ended up becoming oversaturated with lazily post-converted cash-grabs rather than movies that were shot on actual stereoscopic cameras. However, having just recently fixed my own aging 3D TV and binge-watched dozens of gimmicky genre films, I’m pleased to say that there are a surprising number of fun 3D experiences beyond the usual suspects.
With that in mind, here’s a list recommending six underrated horror movies that were shot in 3D!

The darkness enveloped me, and despite the summer heat outside, the air in the building was cool. I sat in silence, intently focused, anticipating what happened next, but not quite prepared. I tensed up upon seeing the spectral woman directly ahead of me. She silently floated, translucent and seemingly unaware — until at last facing me and lunging with a guttural growl as her face distorted into some horrific entity.
This memory is entirely true; it is a ghost story, but not one that took place in a haunted house. Rather, the setting was a haunted library, projected on screen in a movie theater during one of my many viewings of Ghostbusters.

Animated horror movies add a unique layer of terror & appeal that live-action can't replicate, catering to a diverse audience. Animation can be a great entry point to horror for children, striking a balance between fear & humor for a captivating experience. Different animated horror films, from eerie stop-motion anthologies to surreal dark passion projects, showcase the versatility of the genre.
Animated horror movies can do things that live-action can't, and the best animated horrors have a unique appeal. Horror is a genre which doesn't often use animation, since it often works best when the audience can suspend their disbelief. However, there are still ways to use animation to create something truly terrifying, and different filmmakers have achieved this with a variety of styles.

Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.
The original article follows:
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

Garraka, the creepy demon in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” who gives New York a “Death Chill,” was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks with an eye toward Ray Harryhausen’s legendary stop-motion creatures from “Jason and the Argonauts.” In fact, the team paid particular attention to the skeleton army and Medusa for performance reference. That’s because director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”), who voiced Garraka, wanted to combine puppetry, stop motion, animatronics, and CG to evoke the handcrafted charm of the original “Ghostbusters” from 1984.
In this sequel to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the once powerful Garraka, who’s imprisoned in a brass orb by ancient Fire Masters, is inadvertently set free by the Ghostbusters and unleashed on New York. His “Death Chill” breath can freeze his victims and cause them to shatter like tiny crystals. What’s more, Garraka can deep freeze the entire planet, and his plan is to take over by resurrecting an army of the undead.

Monster House could possibly get a sequel, though there are no active plans for that to happen at this time.
While promoting his new film Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, director Gil Kenan spoke with ComicBook.com about his first feature film, Monster House. The animated monster movie, which was released in 2006, was a big success, performing well at the box office and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. Despite this success, the film was never given a sequel, though Kenan confirmed that the door remains open, even if there are no active plans.

Gil Kenan was able to share the 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' story with the original movie's director Ivan Reitman before his death. The 47-year-old filmmaker has helmed the latest picture in the supernatural franchise and admits that the approval of the late director – who passed away aged 75 in 2022 – kept the crew going through the writing process.Gil told The Hollywood Reporter: "We pitched an almost complete version of this film's story outline to Ivan before his passing, and that was really meaningful."Obviously, we didn't know that he wouldn't be with us for the film, but his validation of the pitch and his joy at hearing it was something that kept us going through the writing."Ivan's son Jason Reitman – who had been behind the camera on the 2021 flick 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' - decided not to direct 'Frozen Empire' and Kenan was "honoured" to be given the...

Frozen Empire's negative reception is primarily due to weaker comedy and reliance on nostalgia, compared to the well-received Afterlife. Director Gil Kenan, unlike Jason Reitman, struggles to deliver humor that resonates with audiences, resulting in disappointing jokes and gags. The overstuffed ensemble cast and slow pacing of Frozen Empire hinder the story's urgency and impact, leading to a lackluster viewing experience.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has been met with a much harsher critical reception than its predecessor, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but why are the reviews so negative? Following on from Afterlife, Frozen Empire sees the Spengler family returning to the Ghostbusters’ hometown of New York City to battle more invading ghosts, who are now trying to plunge the world into a second ice age. While Afterlife was warmly received by critics, who praised its humor, originality, and emotional weight, Frozen Empire has been met with mostly negative reviews, and a dismal “rotten...

It’s been almost forty years since Ghostbusters introduced the plucky foursome fumbling their way through spectral encounters, using a now iconic Manhattan firehouse as their operations base. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, set two years after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, further entrenches the Spengler family and newcomers into the franchise by returning to where it all began: New York City. Frozen Empire offers familiar set pieces, references, and easter eggs aplenty, but the nostalgia tank is now running on empty.
Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), mom Callie (Carrie Coon), and stepdad Gary (Paul Rudd) have adjusted well to life as Ghostbusters in the rundown yet classic firehouse. So well, in fact, that their latest paranormal capture caused enough city damage to put them in the crosshairs of Walter “Dickless” Peck (William Atherton). That’s not the only source of trouble for the new team; the firehouse’s containment unit is at capacity and struggling.

With "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," director Jason Reitman sparked a new direction for the sci-fi comedy franchise pioneered by his father, filmmaker Ivan Reitman. Much like the younger Reitman taking the reins of his father's cinematic history, the film grappled with the legacy of the movies that came before by delivering an Amblin-esque family adventure soaked in the nostalgia of the original "Ghostbusters." The result landed somewhere in the middle of being wonderfully entertaining and borderline self-indulgent, and that's coming from someone who has nothing but respect for the groundbreaking 1984 hit that came before it.
Two years later, the spook-nabbing franchise is continuing with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," this time directed by "Monster House" filmmaker Gil Kenan. Leaving behind the dusty, rural Oklahoma setting of "Afterlife," the sequel brings the action back to New York City, where the unconventional Spengler family have been handed the baton, or rather neutron wand, of the original Ghostbusters.

The final trailer for Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has dropped, teasing the arrival of the franchise’s scariest and most dangerous villain since Gozer.
The video continues to set up the tone for the upcoming horror comedy sequel, as the titular team faces an "unimaginable evil" who has the power to literally scare people to their deaths. In addition to the said ancient evil, they must also deal with its army of the undead, which includes every ghost that the Ghosbusters have ever caught. To defeat Garraka and save humankind, the old and new generations of the Ghostbusters will have to join forces and suit up together. The trailer also features a bit of new footage of franchise newcomers Kumail Nanjiani’s Nadeem, Patton Oswalt’s Dr. Hubert Wartzki and James Acaster’s Lars Pinfield.

Something strange is happening in the neighborhood. Time to call the Ghostbusters. Sony has just released the final trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. While it’s been addressed in past trailers and TV spots that this new evil entity that is taking over New York City can scare people to death, and there’s been a mention of a “ghost army,” this final trailer emphasizes that every ghost that the Ghostbusters have ever caught will be unleashed. This provides an opportunity for the film to showcase old fan favorites as well as make references to the wild, unique ghosts of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon and toy line. The notion of “every ghost they ever caught” sounds like an ultimate final conflict, but director Gil Kenan has stated that he already has ideas for sequels beyond Frozen Empire.

When it comes to kid-appropriate horror films, many may turn to Coraline as the blueprint, or perhaps Monster House. And both are great options for kid-friendly spooky films, but there’s one that outshines them all. 1990’s The Witches is by far one of the most unsettling and horrifying kid’s films. The book, which was written by Roald Dahl, is also targeted toward children, and it honestly might be even more frightening than the film despite the lack of visuals. The movie, despite being over 30 years old, still holds up in the effects and makeup department. The titular witches (led by Anjelica Huston) are absolutely grotesque, with pointy, wart-covered features, and an overarching eeriness about them that just doesn’t sit right.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire could introduce the first heroic ghosts in the franchise, changing the dynamic of the series. The sequel has the potential to show that ghosts don't always need to be caught and contained like in the original movies. While scarier elements may deter creators from exploring this storyline, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has the opportunity to prove ghosts can coexist peacefully.
While Ghostbusters: Afterlife set up one potential series twist, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire now has a chance to follow through on this premise. The Ghostbusters franchise has a pretty simple conceit that is effectively encapsulated in its title. The heroes use their ramshackle, homemade technology to capture and contain ghosts, ghouls, and other supernatural phenomena. Despite their brand, the Ghostbusters don’t just deal with ghosts. Instead, they have been known to handle demons, ancient gods, and all manner of other paranormal problems. Consistently, the Ghostbusters are portrayed as forces of good,...

Orion and The Dark is a unique children's movie that combines comedy, adventure, horror, and fantasy elements into a rollicking story with an audacious meta-twist. The movie explores themes of facing fears and expanding imagination, as the hero, Orion, embarks on a surreal odyssey with The Dark as his guide. The Dark proves that fears are nothing to fear, while also introducing other characters like Sleep, Insomnia, and Unexplained Noises. While Orion and The Dark stands out on its own, there are other animated movies like Monster House, Spirited Away, Coraline, Hotel Transylvania, Soul, Song of the Sea, Turning Red, ParaNorman, Monsters, Inc., and Inside Out that share similar themes and provide equally fun and entertaining experiences.
Although Orion and The Dark is a unique offering, there are a handful of earlier animated movies that deal with the same themes as this Netflix hit. Based on the book of the same name by Emma Yarlett,...
