The horror genre has no shortage of films about haunted or possessed items. And I'm not just talking about the usual haunted house or haunted doll fare, either. Films like "Slaxx" boast haunted, killer pants, there's the possessed sofa of "Killer Sofa," and no one could forget "Death Bed: The Bed That Eats." Blumhouse's newest horror flick, "Night Swim," asks the audience to take a dip into a new haunted object: a backyard swimming pool. Based on his short film of the same name, Bryce McGuire's directorial feature debut centers on the Waller family, after former pro-baseball player Ray (Wyatt Russell) and his wife Eve (Kerry Condon) move their family to Minnesota as Ray learns to adjust to life following a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. With hydrotherapy highly encouraged, the Waller family buys a house with a swimming pool -- one that, unbeknownst to them, has a deep, dark history.

South Korean cinema has been a fixture in the horror genre, especially over the past 25 years. From classics like A Tale of Two Sisters, The Host, and Three... Extremes to more recent masterpieces like The Wailing, Train to Busan, and Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, South Korean horror films have provided unique scares that are perfect for the spooky season. Now, a lo-fi and decidedly bizarre film, The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra, will be added to that pedigree when it's released in North America on Oct. 20.
The official synopsis reads as follows:
After a mysterious mold starts spreading across the surface of an abandoned mattress, a sentient creature begins to take shape from within. Feasting on its unsuspecting victims' vertebrae while they rest, the creature grows stronger, finding nourishment not only in the bones and sinew it assimilates but also in the hopes, fears, and emotions of all those it encounters.

Restless spirits can be sneaky little devils, sometimes literally, and find the most unlikely of places to hide out and show themselves when least expected. Nowhere is safe, not in bed, at a museum or even a seaside arcade. Here are a few examples of inanimate objects that became the host for the undead.
The Possession (2012)
Dybbuk Box • Unlike many fictional haunted objects in horror movies, the infamous dybbuk box really exists. Jewish folklore says the wine box – which originally belonged to a Holocaust survivor in Poland — contains an evil spirit that has the power to possess humans.
Big (1988)
Zoltar • “Your wish is granted.” That was the simple message 12-year-old Josh received after guiding a coin into the mouth of Zoltar, the red-eyed mechanical fortune teller in an arcade at Cliffside Park, New Jersey. Josh’s wish? To be “big.” And because the pubescent boy “grew up” to be Tom Hanks,...

For years now there has been a bitter behind-the-scenes struggle over notoriously shitty movie Manos: The Hands Of Fate. Despite the film dying a mercifully swift death upon its initial release and disappearing into the wilds of public domain (where it only existed in the form of a crappy print), it resurfaced and took an a cult popularity in the wake of its use on Mystery Science Theater 3000. The 1966 movie about a family captured by a polygamous pagan cult led by a white-faced “Master” and abetted by a slow-witted and Igor-like grunt named Torgo took on the sheen of appeal only found by films so bad, they attract an audience of people eager to revel in the incompetence of the execution. (See also: The Room, Troll 2, Death Bed: The Bed That Eats.)

Until now the list of movies about killer beds could be counted on one one-fingered hand, but while 1977’s Death Bed: The Bed That Eats has dominated the sub-sub-subgenre for decades it has finally gotten some company. Happily for those who’ve seen that earlier film and wished it was more focused on wetting the bed with blood, Jeff Maher’s Bed of the Dead is here to give you just that.
Virgil (Colin Price) is a cop with baggage. He’s just returned from a leave of absence after being cleared of a shooting incident, but while he’s legally off the hook he suspects he’s guilty all the same. His first case back immediately takes his mind off his own problems as it presents him with numerous issues of its own. Five dead bodies have been discovered in a local sex club, specifically...

No, this is not a remake of 1977’s Death Bed: The Bed That Eats. Yes, this is a Wholly new horror story about mysterious deaths that occur because of a deadly connection to bedroom furniture. Bed Of The Dead is a real, 100% serious thriller produced by the same team responsible for Bite, so that should clue you in on the expected amount of zaniness here. Yet, I guarantee it’ll be infinitely straighter than you’re expecting, as writers Cody Calahan and Jeff Maher spend zero time fucking around with generics. This is a uniquely twisted slice of freakishly-fresh horror that makes its bed and kills in it too, never abandoning sinister chills for anything cheap, cheesy or gimmicky. This is “Wtf” horror, even with such a ridiculous premise.

Halloween! Costumes, pumpkins, junk food, parties and Horror!
We all love a good bit of horror, and Halloween is the time of year to get stuck in. It’s the one day of the year where it’d be rude not to lock yourself away, steal the bowl of candy you bought for trick or treaters, maybe grab a beer or two, turn the lights off and scare yourself into oblivion with a stack of films.
There are of course the classics: Everything from A Nightmare On Elm Street to The Wicker Man. This, for many of us, is what it’s all about – revisiting the films that scared us senseless as kids. But for some people, the same old scares just won’t cut it – they want something fresh.
Luckily for those people, we’ve had a mountain of awesome horror in recent years, some of which will definitely...

If last summer's “The Conjuring” offered possession stories their classiest entry in decades, Mike Flanagan's “Oculus” lends elegance to haunted object movies, a subgenre distinguished by such dubious classics as “Death Bed: The Bed That Eats.” Flanagan, expanding his own 2006 short film to feature length, finds both humanity and horror in the story of two siblings who reunite to exorcise a possessed mirror, but the film's uneven metaphorical core and a decidedly incomplete mythology prevents “Oculus” from reflecting anything truly haunting. See video: ‘Oculus’ Trailer Features Brenton Thwaites, Karen Gillan Battling Haunted Mirror Karen Gillan (TV's “Doctor Who”) plays Kaylie.

Earlier today we alerted you to the special Halloween screenings at the American Cinematheque. They aren't the only Halloween game in Los Angeles. Cinefamily has announced their 30 midnights program for Halloween. Last year the focus was on video nasties; this year it is the United States of Horror, a "cross-country death trip, with each night celebrating a different state of the Union, and regional horror filmmaking of all stripes. Whether it's unknown directors toiling away on backyard labors of love, or itinerant auteurs falling in love with and shooting an unfamiliar landscape as if it was their own, this series' thirty entries provide a vibrant overview of our nation's hidden horror history." Sounds way safer than taking an actual roadtrip.

What do you get when you mix the mystical fun of Joe Dante with the gross brutality of Wes Craven? If you asked me that question about a week ago, I would have been hard-pressed to find an example, but now that I’ve seen director Steven C. Miller’s latest release, I can instantly answer Under The Bed. Written by Eric Stolze, this fresh take on the boogeyman who hides under your bed carries itself in two very distinctive ways, mostly existing as a fantastical creep-fest featuring grabby monster hands and rooms filled with smoke – until a finale that morphs into a gore-filled creature feature. Miller’s film is creative, fun, full of brutally attractive practical effects, and an undeniably entertaining take on a story that’s been re-interpreted for years. Want to know what goes bump in the night? You’re about to find out.

Two weeks ago, it was announced that Cabin in the Woods, the horror flick produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, would finally get a release date after years of sitting on the shelf. It's set for April 2012. Then yesterday, in even more surprising news, a release date was miraculously set for Margaret, Kenneth Lonergan's long-delayed follow-up to You Can Count on Me. That film, which stars Matt Damon and Anna Paquin, has been delayed now for six years, mostly because Lonergan couldn't finish the edit, which led to a lot of squabbles with the studio. Those two movies -- along with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which also recently received a release date -- were among the list of the Six Highly Anticipated Films You May Never Get to See, which we ran back in May.
However, long delays have rarely been kind to a film's box-office prospects, and if history is any indication,...

From man-eating beds to killer clocks, cinema’s full of evil in unexpected places. Here are ten of our favourites…
There are spoilers ahead for some of the films we talk about!
As several decades of cinema have informed us, evil takes many forms. Aside from all the serial killers and ancient demons waiting to either leap out of the shadows and murder us or simply scare us into a weeping ruin, movies are also full of killer cars, malevolent dolls and rampaging animals to contend with.
Given that entire lists could be generated from those menaces outlined above, we’ll be dealing with more obscure manifestations of evil here. The sort of demonic objects you might win on The Generation Game if it were presented by the Devil, or the kind of unlikely scenarios you'd encounter if you were the star of a horror film directed by Benny Hill.

Ellen Ripley (Alien/Aliens, 1979/86)
Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley is just hanging out on the intergalactic transport ship Nostromo, leading the often-dull life of a Space Teamster, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, her idiot captain decides to land on the remote planet Lv-426 to investigate some stupid distress signal emanating from a crashed spaceship. Now, as we all know, responding to distress signals is one of the top five most insanely boneheaded tactical decisions any science-fiction/horror space traveler can possibly make, but this doesn’t stop Captain Numbnuts from ordering his crew to get their asses down there and dope out the spooky alien wreckage.
Of course, once they go down to investigate, some dumbass crewmember decides it would be totally hilarious to stick his face in one of the strange egglike things he finds in the smoldering wreckage of the derelict ship.
