The juggernaut known as American Idol is coming to an end after nearly 14 years on the air, and the conversation around its final season has focused on its musical legacy, gifting the world a constellation of bright stars like Jennifer Hudson (she won an Oscar!) and Katherine McPhee (she starred in a 3-D movie about sharks in a supermarket!). But as the show sings its swan song, we can't forget another indelible mark the series left on pop culture: specifically, 2003's would-be summer blockbuster and the stillborn brainchild of Idol mastermind Simon Fuller,...

How quickly did Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina choose their first songs for the American Idol performance finale? Were they familiar with the songs their own Idols picked for them? How have they changed this season? What are the biggest differences between season 10 and the seasons before it? In the final entry of our ongoing behind-the-scenes series, American Idol associate music director and arranger Michael Orland answered these questions and more while discussing last night’s Top 2 performance finale with EW. (Vocal coach and arranger Debra Byrd, who usually also contributes to this column, did not work with Scotty or Lauren this week.

'American Idol' creator and executive producer, Simon Fuller will return to manage the post-'Idol' careers of the season 10 winner and runner-up, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Shirley Halperin.
Call him the man with the Midas touch, Simon Fuller is not only the mastermind behind 'American Idol,' but he's also had a heavy hand in the success of 'Idols' Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks and Adam Lambert.
Which means this season's winner and runner-up stand a real chance of rivaling some of 'Idol's' greatest success stories, with Fuller at the reins.

American Idol is combining the national love of reality TV with digital downloading. Studio versions of songs performed by the top 13 finalists were made available on iTunes following tonight’s episode at 10Pm Pst.
American Idol finalists have already sold millions of songs on iTunes. “That number could well surge once these latest songs are available for download, thanks to the popularity of the Season 10 contestants,” says Simon Fuller, creator and executive producer of “American Idol.” “The Season 10 Top 13 finalists have already got America talking.”
It’s an Idol first, that just happens to kick-off before the first night in Season 10 where finalist gets the boot. You can sort of call it a consolation prize.
“Hey, chin up. You got voted off but at least you got a studio track available on iTunes.”

One of the summer's most popular parlor games came to a quiet end Friday night when "American Idol" announced that Kara DioGuardi would, as rumored, be leaving the show after just two seasons behind the judges' table.
Entertainment Weekly's Michael Slezak said — as painful as it is to admit, given his criticism of DioGuardi's first year on the show in 2009 — if "Idol" was determined to keep one veteran judge on the panel, it probably should have been Kara.
"I think she's a significantly better judge than Randy [Jackson], because she gives specific critiques and doesn't rely on the same clichés over and over again," he said. "There were definitely times last season where she was more insightful...

Amidst the "American Idol" Judges Watch of 2010, there is some other big "Idol" news -- Universal Music Group will now partner with "American Idol" to market, promote and distribute the "Idol" artists' albums.
Sony Music was the previous "Idol" partner, with finalists typically signing (if they were signed by Sony) with either 19 Recordings Limited and RCA Records or 19 Recordings Limited and Jive Records.
19 Entertainment and "Idol" creator Simon Fuller says in a statement, "With 'Idol' celebrating our 10th season I wanted to inject some new power and weight behind our brand. We have been quietly delivering hits relentlessly for 9 seasons and Lucian Grainge and Jimmy Iovine's ambition, commitment, and determination to push the boundaries and go even further with Idol was very compelling. It is exciting to have the world's biggest show partnered with the world's biggest music company."

Crystal Bowersox has got herself a deal. The 24 year-old American Idol (TV) Season 9 runner up has just signed a record deal with 19 Recordings/Jive Records. The company announced the deal on Monday, prompting an elated statement from Bowersox. "I'm really grateful to be given this opportunity to make an album and let people hear my music," she said. "And I'm looking forward to working with all of the people at 19/Jive." The record label is home to several other past Idols like Kris Allen, Jordin Sparks, and Allison Iraheta. "Crystal is one of the most naturally gifted and talented singer/songwriters to have ever come out of Idol," said creator Simon Fuller. "The breadth of her talent is inspiring." Crystal was favored by many to win the competition before co-contestant Lee DeWyze took the top spot instead. History has proven, however, that one does not need to win the competition...

Season nine winner Lee gets by with a little help — and a lot of advice — from his Idol friends. But what have they told him?
Lee DeWyze was humbled and awed to find himself in the presence of so many former American Idol winners during his finale party May 26, so much so that he’s raving about the night two days later! But who impressed the season 9 winner the most?

Carrie, Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia, Jordin, Kris and Taylor were all on hand to sing Simon Cowell off in style — but where was David?
Last night’s Simon Cowell tribute performance was as touching as they come. Seven of the eight Idol-winning artists he (nearly single-handedly) made — Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood and Kris Allen — were all on hand to bid the departing American Idol judge farewell May 26 with their heartfelt rendition of Delta Goodrem’s “Together We Are One.” But where was season 7 winner David Cook?
Don’t worry — the sexy singer doesn’t have beef with cranky Cowell: he simply had a prior cancer charity commitment in Kansas City, says his rep tells Access Hollywood.
Although he wasn’t on hand to take the stage with his fellow Idol winners, the 27-year-old singer proved...

Wednesday (May 26) night's "American Idol" finale is scheduled to run for 127 minutes, from 8 p.m. til 10:07 p.m. I know it's running long. You know it's running long. Simon Fuller, Ryan Seacrest, Bruce Gowers and Fox's programmers all know it's running long. And why wouldn't it? We're going to have musical performances galore, lengthy tributes to Simon Cowell and his storied legacy, more integrated cross-promotional plugs than you could shake a stick at and, if we've been very bad indeed, the time-wasting travesty known as The Golden Idols. All the while, tension will build... Is your next American Idol...

momlogic's Vivian: Last night's "American Idol" was a smackdown of the fittest! Lee DeWyze and Crystal "MamaSox" Bowersox went head-to-head on the very last Simon Cowell-sanctioned sing-off. And it seems that unless there's an upset tonight, a clear winner lunged for the crown and stole the show. Read on and find out who!
The two remaining "Idol" hopefuls had to perform three songs: their personal fave of the season; producer Simon Fuller's choice; and the song they'd release if they won (surprisingly, both were covers). If you ask me, the choice should've been Cowell's (as a nod of respect to his imminent departure), but whatevs.
Anywhoodle, Lee "Paint Store" DeWyze had to go first, because Crystal had won the ring toss and chose to go second. Something was up with the poor guy, because he seemed deflated throughout the evening -- almost like his synapses weren't that into firing.

Lacey Brown is eliminated from American Idol Finalist Lacey Brown was eliminated tonight on American Idol after she received the fewest of America's votes. In addition, pop sensations Ke$ha and Orianthi sang their latest hits, and Season Seven winner David Cook took the stage to perform The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

'American Idol' finalist set to release her debut album this fall.

This fall is promising a bumper crop of "American Idol" album action. On Tuesday, the day that it was announced that runner-up Adam Lambert had scored a deal with RCA Records, fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta also lined up a debut-album release for the fall on Jive Records, the same label that will be issuing winner Kris Allen's major-label bow.
The season's highest-placing female contestant, and the youngest singer ever to make the top 12 (she was 16 when she began her run), 17-year-old Iraheta distinguished herself on the show with a husky, powerful singing style that belied her youth. From her defining cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" to her gut-busting take on Janis Joplin's "Cry Baby," the flame-haired singer showed a steely confidence on the show.
