Every time I reread the Harry Potter books or even watch the films, I always feel bad for one thing—Harry’s summers with the Dursleys. Like, poor guy literally survived Voldemort as a baby, only to be rewarded with chores from Aunt Petunia, Dudley’s bullying, and Uncle Vernon’s purple-faced rage.
As a diehard Potterhead, I’ve always found these summers fascinating because they show us just how awful Harry’s Muggle life was compared to the magic and adventure awaiting him at Hogwarts. And let’s be real, some of those breaks were so chaotic they could’ve been entire spin-off stories.

While there are many enchanting and intricate details in the ever-expanding world of Harry Potter, one thing that never fails to fascinate me is the ever-changing lineup of Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers. It’s almost like Hogwarts had a curse on the position, and year after year, we were introduced to new professors, each with their own quirks, flaws, and occasional moments of brilliance.
Some of them were laughably terrible, others were downright terrifying, and a select few actually managed to teach the Hogwarts students something useful about defending themselves against dark magic. And as a lifelong, diehard Potterhead, I’ve spent countless hours re-reading the books, rewatching the films,...

The experience of watching movies is undoubtedly enhanced when they have a good musical score. Take Steven Spielberg’s E.T., for example—we can’t imagine the movie without John Williams’ epic flying theme. The same goes for the adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels. Without music, even the most magical scenes would have felt empty.
But all thanks to composers like John Williams, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and Alexandre Desplat, Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter movies became instantly recognizable for their incredible soundtracks. Especially Williams’ Hedwig’s Theme, which became synonymous with the magical franchise.

As a lifelong Potterhead, I can proudly say the movie adaptations of J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter books from Warner Bros. have shaped my childhood. From the very first time Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry walked into the Great Hall to the final battle at Hogwarts, the series gave us pure magic.
We saw him team up with Rupert Grint as Ron, and Emma Watson as Hermione to fight dark magic, discover friendship, and step into the world of Hogwarts, which I wish I belonged to. But here’s the thing—have you ever noticed just how long these magical movies are? I mean, not that anyone counts, once they start binge-watching.

While Horcruxes had some deeply dark magic, the Marauder’s Map from the Harry Potter franchise also had some mysterious magic that has led fans to theorize that it was cursed, too, if not more. The map was used by Harry Potter in his time at Hogwarts to do plenty of sleuthing and sneaking, as it gave an accurate location of where everyone was in the school.
The map could do wonders, as it depicted secret passageways, people hidden under invisibility cloaks, and even Animagi, as shown in Prisoner of Azkaban. While charms created by a person usually wear off after they die, the fact that the map works even...

Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort might have just shared a common ancestor at one point in time! Of course, the theory is quite far-fetched, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not entirely true.
Tom Riddle belongs to the Gaunt family, which is the last direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin himself. The Gaunt family came into possession of the resurrection stone from Cadmus Peverell as well.
Cadmus Peverell was one of the three brothers who had received the Deathly Hallows. On the other hand, Harry Potter is a descendant of the Peverell family.
The lineage theory speculates that if one of the Peverell brothers were the heir of Salazar Slytherin, it could explain many things that we had ignored until now. This theory also hints that Harry Potter and Voldemort share a common ancestor, leading to similar traits and characteristics between the two. The signs are all there; we just need to look deeper.

Wand fights, or wizard duels, are some of the most exciting parts of the Harry Potter universe. They are not just about throwing spells and making sparks fly; they show us bravery, cleverness, and even love. Now, while J.K. Rowling’s books gave us many unforgettable duels that tested friendships and loyalties, not all of them made it to the big screen.
The movies gave us flashy battles filled with colors and explosions, but they missed out on a few of the quiet but powerful duels that shaped the lore and its characters. For example, moments like McGonagall standing up to Umbridge, or Tonks bravely facing Bellatrix, reveal much more than simple magic tricks. These battles tell us who these characters really are when danger strikes.
So, let’s take a trip through both the Harry Potter books and films, and rank every major duel that still keeps fans talking years later.

Emma Thompson is one of the most talented and beloved actresses, with a series of extremely heartfelt performances that stole the hearts of the audience. However, few are even aware that she was a part of Harry Potter.
The film series, which consisted of eight films between 2001 and 2011, was filled with high-caliber English and Irish actors, so keeping track of all of them is difficult. Aside from the young actors who found worldwide fame thanks to their roles, the series featured actors like Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, and so many others. However, when speaking about her career at the Locarno Film Festival, via Deadline, Emma Thompson didn't see her role in the franchise as one of the most creative ones.

Ben Barnes loves to see himself in fan-castings of an iconic Harry Potter character, but notes that his views on the franchise as a whole have been "sort of tainted" over the years.
As work begins on HBO's Harry Potter series, fans are already imagining future seasons adapting the other novels in J.K. Rowling’s classic story. That includes The Prisoner of Azkaban, which introduces Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather, who was framed for both betraying them to Voldemort and killing several Muggles.
After years in Azkaban, Sirius broke out to find Harry and convince him of his innocence. Sadly, he had to keep on the run, still helping Harry until his tragic death in The Order of the Phoenix. The movies saw Gary Oldman playing the role, who did a fine job with the part.
Of course, fans have been dream-casting roles like Sirius, and a major favorite has been Ben Barnes.

There's an earnestness to the work of James Gunn and M. Night Shyamalan, two directors who currently find themselves neck-and-neck at the domestic box office. Gunn's Superman recently overtook Shyamalan's highest-grosser, The Sixth Sense. The superhero movie is passing the $300 million mark domestically as we speak, as it hopes to make up for lost ground overseas. Currently, the filmmakers both happen to be working at Warner Bros., with Gunn serving as co-ceo of DC Studios with Peter Safran, and Shyamalan having recently signed an overall deal.
Superman grossed a healthy $4 million-plus on Tuesday, taking its running total to $296 million; the movie will most likely pass the $300 million milestone either today or tomorrow. The Sixth Sense, on the other hand, concluded its domestic run with $292 million. Released in 1999, the film announced Shyamalan as a director to watch out for, earning him comparisons to Steven Spielberg. The movie also earned him...

Funko has been releasing a lot of new Harry Potter figures lately, but this one will catch the eye of every collector. Albus Dumbledore and his phoenix, Fawkes, have been immortalized in an exclusive Funko figure, just in time for San Diego Comic-Con 2025. This Hogwarts Headmaster and his majestic bird have been depicted as figures in the past, but this one is more reminiscent of a scene featured in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
With a listed price of $29.99, this Pop! Deluxe figure features Albus Dumbledore as he begins to be covered in flames. This is in reference to a scene in Order of the Phoenix, when the Ministry of Magic was going to arrest him and send him to Azkaban. Before he was taken away, Fawkes flew down and covered him in flames, thus teleporting him away from the school of magic. A release date is...

When people think of Hermione Granger, they often remember her as the brainy, rule-following witch with a hand always raised in class. However, in the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling depicted Hermione as way more than just a clever student.
She had a savage side—bold, brave, and totally badass. While Emma Watson did a fantastic job bringing Hermione to life in the movies, some of her most savage moments were criminally skipped. But now, with HBO rebooting the Harry Potter franchise with long-form episodes, they must rectify this.
With Arabella Stanton playing the new Hermione in the upcoming Harry Potter reboot, the actress must portray Hermione’s savage side. Not just the brainy know-it-all—this time Hermione must appear as the fearless rebel who blackmailed reporters, and broke school rules like a boss.
So, let’s explore a few of Hermione’s wild moments from the books that Emma Watson never got to play,...

One glaring fact that every Potterhead has noticed while watching the Harry Potter films is the gradual loss of magic as the series progresses. Like, when we first came across Chris Columbus’ Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001, there were soaring broomsticks, floating candles, dueling wizards, and a castle bursting with enchantment.
However, as the franchise progressed toward the final showdown between Harry and Voldemort, that early sense of wide-eyed magical wonder started fading and transforming into darker, grittier themes. The sequels sure do have their own unique charm, but the spellbinding essence that made us believe Hogwarts was real was no longer there.
With a shift in directorial responsibilities across the eight films, some installments felt more focused on plot and war than on the whimsical side of wizardry that originally drew us into this franchise. So today, we’re ranking all eight Harry Potter films by how magical they feel...

At least one person cast in the new Harry Potter television show is already thinking about its future, and how he might not be part of it. Bertie Carvel will be playing Cornelius Fudge, the manipulative Minister of Magic played by Robert Hardy in the films. However, in a recent interview, Carvel said he might not return after the show's first season if fans don't like it. His comments might be alarming to Harry Potter fans who understand the importance of Fudge's role in some of the later novels, particularly book five, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Actually, I'm surprised they cast Fudge already because the show is meant to be a more faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling's book series, beginning with the first novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Well, Fudge doesn't actually appear until the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,...

Before she was dropping quirky business advice as Jo Bennett on The Office, Kathy Bates had already cemented her status as one of Hollywood’s most terrifying villains in the 1990 film Misery. A role that won her an Oscar and still haunts viewers to this day. And now, based on her obsessive and unhinged role as Annie Wilkes, we believe she could have played the spine-chilling Dolores Umbridge in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot.
Think about it, Kathy Bates has the same unnerving smile that masks a hidden cruelty beneath the surface. Additionally, she has the talent to make viewers both laugh and flinch in the same breath. And we all know, Umbridge isn’t just a villain—she’s the kind of bureaucratic evil that feels all too real. And if anyone can channel that, it’s Bates.

From the very first time I read about that magical train ride on the Hogwarts Express, I was hooked. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books made me fall completely in love—not just with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but with every corner of the Wizarding World. And then, when Warner Bros. brought that magical world to life, with just a flick of a wand (and a few million dollars in special effects), I was beyond excited.
Seeing Hogwarts, Quidditch matches, and spell duels on the big screen felt like a dream come true. But I won’t lie—some of that magic faded because of a few casting choices that just didn’t sit right with me. Don’t get me wrong—the films got a lot right (Alan Rickman as Snape was absolute perfection!). However, there were moments when I felt that certain actors couldn’t do justice to their characters.

The three "Fantastic Beasts" movies, all directed by David Yates and written (or co-written) by the disreputable author J.K. Rowling, serve as prequels to the eight extant Harry Potter movies.
The Harry Potter series takes place at a remote British boarding school for witch-kids and wizard-children, but it is set in the present day; while Harry and his pals learn spells and fight mystical creatures, the outside world of ordinary humans continues in its usual fashion, unperturbed. Wizards pejoratively refer to ordinary people as Muggles, and their magical machinations are kept hidden from prying human eyes.
Meanwhile, the "Beasts" films are set in 1926, 1927, and 1932, long before Harry Potter was born. They star the nerdy Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a magizoologist who studies and cares for a menagerie of, well, fantastic beasts that only wizards know about. The movies take place in America, and come to involve a dangerous wizard criminal named Grindelwald,...

Hear me out before you roll your eyes—wouldn’t it be kind of amazing to see the master become the servant? Imagine a poetic, full-circle moment, but not in some dark or vengeful way. That’s what I had secretly hoped for Gary Oldman to play after he appeared as Sirius Black in Harry Potter.
Imagine him returning to the Wizarding World as Kreacher, the grumpy house-elf forever bound to the House of Black! It’s just like one of those wild casting choices, that sounds hilarious but makes perfect sense. However, thanks to some firm boundaries that Gary Oldman has set—my fun dream is pretty much impossible now.

Nearly 15 years after the conclusion of the "Harry Potter" film franchise, and almost 20 years since the release of J.K. Rowling's final novel, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," Warner Bros. is teaming up with HBO to produce an all-new TV series based on the beloved books. We've already met many members of the cast, and while details remain scarce, it's safe to assume the show will stick more closely to the source material, perhaps even expanding on moments the films had to omit.
Yes, the movies are genuine classics -- well, most of them, anyway -- and the various directors and writers did their best to adapt Rowling's massive texts into feature-length films suitable for general audiences. But that meant many important characters and plot threads were either glossed over or cut entirely.

Gary Oldman's career has included a number of critically acclaimed films, like 1992's Dracula, 2011's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and 2017's Darkest Hour. Aside from them, he also played Sirius Black in Harry Potter.
Oldman made his debut in 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He further reprised his role briefly in the two follow-ups, 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and 2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, with a short cameo in the final entry, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2. Although his character was a Slytherin, the actor revealed during a chat on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he's a Hufflepuff.
Asked whether he had ever used a quiz that sorts him into a Hogwarts House, and which House he'd be, the Oscar-winning actor didn't seem to remember the house system too well. "If I ever what?" he asked in return.

A handful of major roles for HBO's "Harry Potter" TV show have been cast, and when it comes to the adult actors, they all have one big thing in common: They're significantly younger than the actors who originated their roles in the "Harry Potter" film series.
According to a press release directly from Warner Bros. and HBO, nine actors have been added to the cast, which includes the main trio and a bunch of professors at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (Albus Dumbledore included). Katherine Parkinson, known for small screen projects like "Humans" and "The It Crowd," will portray Molly Weasley, the matriarch of the Weasley family played by Julie Walters in the films and mother of Ron (Alastair Stout is set to star as Ron). Nobody has picked up the mantle of the late Helen McCrory as Narcissa Malfoy as of this writing, but her son Draco, originally played by Tom Felton,...

One bizarre yet understated aspect of the "Harry Potter" books is that they kind of count as period pieces. At first glance they might seem like they take place in the vague here and now, but on closer inspection it's clear that "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," published in 1998, actually takes place from summer 1991 to late spring of 1992. The final book, published in 2007, takes place from 1997 to 1998. It's a shame Harry was so preoccupied with preventing Voldemort from taking over the world, because he could've been enjoying the golden age of "The Simpsons" instead. I suppose that's just one of many downsides to the Dark Lord's reign of terror.
The reason this '90s timeline is surprising to some of the more casual fans is that the book series doesn't have that strong of a '90s feel. Because Harry is off in a secluded wizarding world most of the time,...

I still remember the exact moment Harry Potter broke my heart as a kid. Not when Sirius fell, not even when Dobby died. It was that twist that just messed with my trust so bad, and made me question everything I thought I knew about this magical world. It kind of felt like Ned Stark’s death in Game of Thrones.
But here’s the crazy part: that betrayal is also what made the $7.7 billion franchise unforgettable. Because sometimes, the moments that hurt the most are the ones that stay with us forever.

There has never been and probably will never be a franchise as iconic as Harry Potter. Even with the upcoming TV show by HBO that aims to adapt one book into a single season, casting new generations of actors as our beloved fictional characters, the original film series by Warner Bros. will always have a separate fan base and place in the annals of the film industry.
Adapted from J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels, the film series has become one of the most successful franchises in cinematic history, grossing over 7.7 billion dollars worldwide (via The Numbers), across eight films released between 2001 and 2011. At the heart of the magical saga were three young actors—Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint—who brought to life the iconic characters of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

A scary movie doesn’t hit right unless it comes with a villain who truly makes your skin crawl. Sure, the plot twists and those clever camera jumps help, but what lingers long after the credits roll is often a character—the one who pushed all the buttons, shattered peace, and made things personal. It’s the villain that often adds real flavor to a story. Good heroes are easy to like, but a good villain? That’s the character who makes you feel rage, fear, or just pure fascination.
Sure, jump scares and creepy soundtracks help increase the eerie factor, but it’s the villains that make your feet go cold. Because let’s face it, a story’s only as strong as the trouble the heroes are facing. And when that trouble is wrapped up in human form, doing the worst things for the most twisted reasons, that...

The Harry Potter film series is based on the best-selling books by J.K. Rowling. It consists of 8 movies, released between 2001 and 2011. Among all these installments, the Deathly Hallows, the final installment, might end up surprising you.
You sit down anticipating a light-hearted movie about a boy-wizard’s final journey, and suddenly you find yourself in the middle of a larger-than-life battle between Good Vs Evil.
The final movie, which brings the earlier films and the entire story full circle, subtly becomes more reflective and emotionally complex than its predecessors.
Moreover, what really makes it special is how it marks the epic finale of one of the most beloved film series in history. So, what exactly is the creator’s favorite moment of the entire series?

There are a ton of spells in the Wizarding World of "Harry Potter," all of which (obviously) do vastly different things. Some, like "Expelliarmus," will disarm your enemy in battle. Meanwhile, "Accio" summons an object towards you, "Wingardium Leviosa" makes things float, "Alohomora" opens (most) locked doors, and "Avada Kedavra" will kill a grown witch or wizard on the spot. So, what is the Patronus charm (which uses the incantation "Expecto Patronum")?
Alongside all of the spells, there's a whole host of magical creatures in the Wizarding World, and the darkest among them are dementors: soul-sucking, faceless, hooded ghouls who guard the isolated wizard prison Azkaban. The only way to fend off dementors is by using your Patronus, and unlike most spells, the Patronus Charm is completely unique to each witch and wizard who uses it. Let’s get one thing straight—Albus Dumbledore may have had the wit, the power, and the wand skills, but he seriously fumbled when it came to protecting Sirius Black. After his lack of trust once put Sirius in Azkaban, Dumbledore’s lack of trust in Harry, eventually killed Sirius in Order of the Phoenix.
After Dumbledore ghosted Harry the entire Order of the Phoenix, instead of training him to face Voldemort—it cost Sirius his life. And this wasn’t just a “my bad” moment—Dumbledore’s biggest fumble cost Harry his only family, his godfather. Now, if HBO wants to serve a reboot that’s actually cooked, they must show us Dumbledore’s worst mistakes, alongside his greatest achievements.

We’ve all been there and ugly-cried over Sirius Black’s death in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, whether while reading the book or while watching the film. Turns out, Gary Oldman, who played the role in the films, was equally heartbroken over his character’s demise within a short span of time.
In a behind-the-scenes moment, Gary Oldman found out he was getting the literary axe, and let’s just say, he did not take it like a Gryffindor. His good friend, David Thewlis, who played Remus Lupin in the films recalled how Oldman expressed his honest rage towards J.K. Rowling after she did our dogfather dirty.

No other movie has managed to reach the heights of A Minecraft Movie at the 2025 box office. By some considerable distance, Jared Hess' video game adaptation is the biggest hit of the year, turning in over $909 million from six weeks in theaters, split between a domestic total of $408.9 million and $500.6 million from overseas markets. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa in lead roles, the movie was always destined to be somewhat of a hit, but, given the frustrating lack of appeal the 2025 theatrical line-up has had on audiences so far, many couldn't have predicted it would be an almost-billion-dollar hit.
After surpassing major blockbusters such as Spider-Man 3, Shrek 2, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, thanks to another impressive weekend at the box office, A Minecraft Movie has now officially entered the 75 highest-grossing movies in global history. Although she who must not be named is heavily involved in the upcoming Harry Potter series, Warner Bros. is distancing itself from her views.
HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys recently addressed J.K. Rowling‘s ongoing anti-transgender rhetoric and how it will impact the TV adaptation of her seven-book fantasy novel series.
“The decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us,” said Bloys on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast. “We’ve been in business for 25 years. We already have a show on HBO from her called C.B. Strike that we do with the BBC.”
He added, “It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything. If you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”
Deadline previously reported Rowling was part of the pitch process for the Warner Bros.

If Harry Potter fans can suspend their disbelief to allow for invisibility cloaks, flying cars and time-traveling pocket watches, John Lithgow hopes they can get around his casting.
Following the the 2x Oscar nominee’s casting as Albus Dumbledore, he admitted he’s “very excited” and “very intimidated” by the role from the J.K. Rowling book series, which was previously portrayed on-screen by Richard Harris, Michael Gambon and Jude Law.
“I will be following the great Michael Gambon. I’m not an Englishman, although I’ve played one on TV,” he said on BBC’s The One Show. “I remind everyone that I did play Winston Churchill on The Crown and did just fine.”
Lithgow added, “But yes, I mean, it’s an enormous thrill. But I know there were plenty of people appalled that an American should be hired to play the ultimate English wizard. But, I will do my best.

When it comes to legendary movie franchises, Harry Potter is up there, casting spells at the box office from day one. Kicking off in 2001 with The Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone if you’re fancy and British), the series grew into an eight-film phenomenon that shaped a generation, created a billion-dollar empire, and probably inspired a few owl purchases.
While the main saga wrapped in 2011 with The Deathly Hallows Part 2, aka the one that broke hearts and records, it didn’t end there. We got Fantastic Beasts, stage plays, video games, theme park rides, and endless debates over which Hogwarts house rules. Despite J.K. The "Harry Potter" franchise features numerous families in its magical world of wizarding and witchcraft, though perhaps none as extensive as the Weasleys. As Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) discovers his and his family's important role in the battle against the evil wizard Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), he's taken by the Weasleys. Identifiable by their hereditary red hair, Harry practically becomes a surrogate son to the family before marrying into it by the series' end. However, with so many Weasley children, including those that barely appear in the movies at all, it can be hard for casual viewers to keep track of them all.
Here is a complete rundown of the Weasleys appearing throughout the "Harry Potter" movies and how each of them help steer the overarching story. Harry Potter is one of the most tragic characters in his own franchise. The poor lad has experienced the deaths of several loved ones throughout the fantasy series, including his own parents. Lily and James Potter were brutally murdered at the hands of Lord Voldemort, leaving Harry an orphan child. Living with the Dursleys at Privet Drive is a miserable experience for Harry, and Hogwarts offers him a place he can call home. Still, one of the major factors behind Harry's undying love for Hogwarts is Professor McGonagall.

I get it. Adaptations are hard. Turning a hit book into a movie is tricky, especially when the books in question — in this case, the "Harry Potter" series — are very, very long. The longest "Potter" book, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," contains a whopping 870 pages in its US hardcover edition, so obviously not every single detail is bound to make it during the adaptation process. Still, the "Harry Potter" film franchise, which spanned eight movies, left a lot behind, and some of it is pretty important!
There are actually a whole bunch of "Harry Potter" plotlines and characters that didn't make it from the books to the movies, but here I'm going to try and note some of the most important ones.
As Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) learn magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, they meet a lot of people.

Although he spends most of his childhood being loathed by the Dursleys, Harry Potter develops the biggest circle of friends in the Wizarding World. He has many fearless allies, who are prepared to place their own lives on the line to help him vanquish the Dark Lord. The greatest is Professor Snape, who takes some of the biggest risks while fulfilling his duties as Hogwarts' potions master. Book adaptations have been a fan favourite in recent years. But the one that paved the way for the genre was definitely Harry Potter, based on the famous books of author J.K. Rowling. Not only this, but The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, has also played a huge role in shaping the genre with its dystopian saga. While the Golden Trio was brought to the big screen, many other important characters were not. The movies may have adapted Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) and Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), but other supporting characters failed to earn a proper place in the movies.
