Why Adult Swim's The Boondocks Reboot Was Canceled
Image
Aaron McGruder's comic strip "The Boondocks" first appeared in 1996 in the pages of The Diamondback, the school newspaper of the University of Maryland. McGruder attended U of M, graduating with a degree in African American Studies. "The Boondocks" followed the life and experiences of a 10-year-old big-city Chicago boy named Huey and his brother Riley, who have to go live with their grandfather in the suburbs of Maryland. Huey, like McGruder, was sharply aware of the fineries of Black culture and the way it was commonly misused by corporate America. Riley, meanwhile, loved gangsta rap culture and sought the wealth and conspicuous consumption featured in so many rap videos. Both kids butted heads with their grandfather, who, being a WWII veteran and former civil rights activist, had a perspective all his own.

"The Boondocks" was assertively political, which was refreshing in the funny pages. McGruder tried to partner with several distribution syndicates,...

It’s really hard to find something of that caliber, so getting to do it was such a joy.”

10 Best Anime Not Made in Japan, Ranked
Image
Anime is a term that mainly refers to animated entertainment produced in Japan, although it has steadily grown into its own entity with many tropes and sub-genres specific to it. Anime has become its own genre, so recognizable that animated series created outside of Japan are often referred to as such because they follow styles of art or contain common tropes that show the genre.

Anime, although still holding its original meaning, has become more of an umbrella term for anime-inspired series. Avatar: The Last Airbender, for example, is a beloved Western animation but is often categorized as an anime alongside many other series that use the signature tropes of the genre as a medium to tell stories and showcase characters that can charm and captivate audiences in ways similar to the most famous anime series out there.

It's Time to Admit Lotr: War of the Rohirrim Failed at Being an Anime
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was something of a creative curiosity for fans. On paper, it seemed like something that might appeal to both Middle-Earth enthusiasts and anime aficionados, thus giving it prime potential to be a box office hit in the holiday season. After many fans of Tolkien's legenderium felt let down by Amazon's Rings of Power, hearing of Peter Jackson's return to Middle-Earth became something to look forward to. Unfortunately, the movie's financial stockings have been stuffed with coal, and it's more than obvious why.

Beyond its struggles as an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's works and its mixed reception, The War of the Rohirrim fell short as a proper anime film. Despite a sizable budget, it lacked the visual finesse and dynamic energy characteristic of most anime, making its flaws even more glaring. The animation felt uninspired and unrefined, undermining any...

'Why Do You Want the Same Sh-t?': Major Anime Creator Responds to Fans Asking for More Samurai Champloo
Image
LeSean Thomas, the first African-American animator to direct anime in Japan, has been driven to work in animation for the majority of his life. However, the prominent creator is dismayed by his audiences continuously asking for shows like Vinland Saga or Samurai Champloo instead of more innovative projects that push conventional boundaries.

Per Anime News Network, The Japan Society in New York City recently hosted an event called "Foreign Exchanges: Anime Inspirations & Visionaries with LeSean Thomas." While speaking at three talks organized by Coach Mike of "The ImagiNation Project," Thomas discusses the experiences he had while directing major anime projects like Cannon Busters (2019) and Yasuke (2021). Many criticized the latter series at the time of its release due to its incorporation of fantasy and mecha elements into a historical drama story. However, Thomas wishes to avoid "retreading" ground seen in other works -- something he has accused other Black directors of doing.

15 Best Animated Sitcoms Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Animated sitcoms have carved out their own niche within the landscape of television, and the genre has evolved a lot over the years. Starting with shows like The Flintstones and The Jetsons in the 1960s, animated sitcoms presented a novel variation on a tired format. Animation allowed these shows to tell stories and jokes that would be impossible in traditional live-action sitcoms. After shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park became popular in the 1990s, animated sitcoms took another big leap forward, with shows focused solely on adults.

Nowadays, animated sitcoms are more common than ever before, since advances in technology have made them quicker and easier to make. The genre has opened up to allow for original and creative concepts, many of which do things which live-action isn't built to do. Modern classics like Rick and Morty and BoJack Horseman showcase all the fast-paced fun of animation,...

That '90s Show Finally Puts An End To A Major Hyde Theory
Image
Content warning: This article mentions an actor who was convicted of rape. It also includes spoilers for That '90s Show part 3!

That '90s Show part 3 debunks a theory that Hyde is Gwen's dad, confirming Cedric Yarbrough's character as her father. The popular theory connecting Hyde to Gwen was fueled by similarities between the characters. It's unlikely Hyde's fate will be addressed in That '90s Show due to the serious legal issues surrounding actor Danny Masterson.

That '90s Show part 3 finally disproved a major theory surrounding Steven Hyde and his fate after That '70s Show. Set over 15 years after That '70 Show's timeline, That '90s Show primarily follows the daughter of Eric and Donna, Leia, and her teenage friends in Point Place. Why The Boondocks Isn't An Anime (Despite The Creator's Love For It)
Image
The Boondocks is not classified as anime due to being created by American companies, despite anime influences in its visuals. Aaron McGruder drew inspiration from iconic anime series like Samurai Champloo, enriching The Boondocks with cultural themes and hip-hop influences. Moi Animation's involvement in the second season elevated The Boondocks' animation quality, bringing a richer visual experience in line with authentic anime standards.

The Boondocks, a show steeped in controversy and praise alike, stands out not only for its incisive social commentary but also for its unique visual style, which borrows heavily from Japanese animation, but The Boondocks isn't anime. Created by Aaron McGruder, the series follows the adventures of the Freemans, particularly the two young brothers, Huey and Riley, a Black family who moves from the inner city to the predominantly white suburbs. The Boondocks blends satire, racial politics, and the clash of cultures.

Throughout its run, the show...

In an exclusive interview with Variety, German maestro filmmaker Werner Herzog discussed his plans to lead the 3rd Film Accelerator program organized by Barcelona-based La Selva. Herzog and his long-time cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger will be on hand to guide the 25 directing and 25 cinematography aspirants who will pair up to create short films no longer than 10 mins in length.

On day one, he will give them a framework on which to base their project. “They’re not to come with a pre-formulated plan for their projects,” said Herzog, who revealed that he was lending his voice to “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming hand-drawn animated feature about deep-sea creatures.

This would not be the first time for Herzog, who has lent his distinguished gravelly voice to many other parts in the past, most notably in episodes of “The Simpsons,” “The Boondocks” as well as Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty” and “Metalocalypse.

‘Good Times’ Review: Netflix’s Animated Sequel Improves When It Steps Out From Norman Lear’s Shadow
Image
The title of Eric Monte and Mike Evans’ Norman Lear-produced sitcom Good Times was designed to be welcoming and inclusive. The theme song was a litany of poverty-driven adversity — temporary layoffs, easy credit rip-offs, etc. — interjected with the chorus of “Good Times!,” setting up the story of the Evans family weathering the travails of the Chicago projects with a mix of pride, determination and a whole lot of dysfunctional domestic affection.

The title of Netflix’s new 10-episode animated Good Times has taken on an almost antagonistic quality, since the first trailer was released and devotees of the original blasted those two minutes for being a violation of said original’s style and spirit.

Cavalcade of caricatures! Good Times!

Drug-dealing baby! Good Times!

Executive Producer Seth MacFarlane! Good Times!

Only for adults! Good times!

It’s impossible to review Netflix’s Good Times without starting by saying what it is not — namely,...

Shirley (2024) – Movie on Netflix: a realstory of social consciousness and political beliefs
Image
Shirley is a biographical movie about the life of Shirley Chisholm movie written and directed by John Ridley starring Regina King.

A schoolteacher, elected to Congress. It was the early 70s, and Shirley Chisholm was also the first African American woman to run for the Presidency of the United States. A woman who ran without any backing, representing the members of the working class, the minorities.

A movie filled with hope, faith, and feminism.

Indeed, more than a racial candidacy, Shirley Chisholm based her campaign on gender politics and minorities, paving the way for a hopeful future.

A film about faith, but above all about clear-cut American politics.

About the movie

Faith, hope, and a lot of political film of good ideas, faith, hope, and political consciousness. A movie with its good ideas well defined (we don’t deny them at any moment) and does everything possible to assert its thesis.

Epic Games Survey Shows It Has Forgotten What Made Fortnite Great in the First Place
Image
Epic Games’ Fortnite is one of the most popular titles, and it owes its popularity to its amazing gameplay and freedom of customization, not to mention that it’s free to play. The developer also brings in collaborations from time to time that have now become a big part of Fortnite.

While the crossovers have helped the game garner more players, they have also overshadowed the main gameplay that first appealed to players. A survey from developers has now been sent to players, asking them about new crossovers they would want in the game.

A Fortnite Survey Suggests New Collaborations Are on the Cards Fortnite seems to be going further away from its gameplay with more collaborations.

The latest Chapter 5 Season 2, Myths & Mortals, was released on March 8th in Fortnite and brought Greek gods with their unique powers to the game. It was also revealed that a collaboration with the Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel,...

Rick & Morty Creator's New Show Proves How Good The Simpsons Actually Still Is
Image
The Simpsons' recent seasons have improved considerably, winning over both critics and fans, making it one of the stronger animated adult comedies on television. The fact that new shows, even with notable talents like Dan Harmon, are struggling to gain hype emphasizes The Simpsons' impressive comeback. Despite its age, The Simpsons' formula continues to work, allowing it to outperform newer shows and earn more acclaim than even Dan Harmon's new series.

While The Simpsons season 35 might not be as good as the show’s best outings, the creator of Rick and Morty’s new animated Fox sitcom shows just how good the series still is today. It was no major surprise when The Simpsons seasons 30 through 33 struggled with critics and fans alike. The show’s so-called Golden Age ended around season 11, a full 20 years before season 32 began. The Simpsons paved the way for much of the modern adult animation landscape but,...

The Boondocks Concept Art From Canceled Reboot Reveals New Character Designs
Image
Fans of The Boondocks got a glimpse at what the now-shelved TV series might have looked like.

On Oct. 28 and 30, Seung-Eun Kim revealed concept art for The Boondocks' reboot via X. Fans were also able to get a sense of possible themes and episodes of the series, as images of alternate versions of United States Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the popular Street Fighter character Cammy depict personalities taken far out of their usual contexts, in typical The Boondocks fashion. Many fans noted that the art style was homaging Capcom, a theory that Cammy's appearance appears to bolster. Check out the concept designs below:

Could Adult Swim Expand to 24 Hours?
Image
Adult Swim has been gradually taking up more airtime on Cartoon Network, with recent events suggesting that it may eventually dominate the entire day's schedule. Adult Swim's success with older demographics and its recent increase in ratings have positioned it as a key player for Warner Bros. Discovery, which is looking to target the older generation to combat the decline of cable TV. Cartoon Network's relevance is at risk, as linear ratings continue to decline and original series migrate to streaming platforms. With Adult Swim dominating 13 hours of the day, Cartoon Network's future is uncertain.

Those of us who grew up in the 2000s hold Cartoon Network in a special place in our hearts. Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, The Powerpuff Girls, and Ed Edd n Eddy were just some of the titles that defined the decade for the network. When the day was over,...

15 Times The Simpsons Changed A Character's Voice Actor
Image
The Simpsons has replaced at least fifteen voice actors throughout its 33-year run, due to reasons like actor deaths, concerns about diversity, and labor disputes. Characters like Dr. Hibbert, Artie Ziff, and Carl Carlson have been recast in recent years to address diversity issues in the show. While some character changes caused controversy, most of the recast characters in The Simpsons did not receive significant backlash from fans.

While The Simpsons has a cast of thousands, the show has changed the voice actors of at least fifteen characters for a diverse range of reasons. The Simpsons has been on the air for over 33 years. During that time, the long-running animated comedy introduced viewers to thousands of characters. From one-off joke characters to ever-present fan favorites, The Simpsons has a vast cast. ‘Atlanta’ poised for farewell hug from Emmys
Image
“Atlanta” is bowing out with a final season and hoping to earn one last Best Comedy Series nomination after a stellar run at the Emmys.

Donald Glover‘s hit FX show, which he created, co-writes, co-directs, and stars in follows the multi-hyphenate as Earn, who tries to help his cousin Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry) make a career as a rapper in Atlanta named Paper Boi. Across the show’s run, they and Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) come across various issues that touch on money, race, relationship, status, and parenthood.

The show has moments of real drama and has received acclaim for its distinct brand of eccentric humor, driven by Glover. With moments of bizarre surrealness, the show is idiosyncratic in its ideas and executions and is one of the most unique shows from one of the most impressive storytellers out there.

The show has always been well-received and its fourth and final season,...
