Although his debut could be derailed by a potential preemption later this week, “As The World Turns” alum Van Hansis (ex-Luke Snyder) is returning to daytime television when he takes over the role of Lucas Jones on ABC’s “General Hospital,” last played by Ryan Carnes.

According to TV Insider, which first reported the news, Hansis is set to hit Port Charles on the Friday, October 4 episode, albeit contingent on whether or not ABC’s coverage of the Major League Baseball Wild Card Series causes a last-minute preemption of the drama series on Thursday, October 3.

While storyline details have not been announced, it looks like Lucas is back in town just in time for the awakening of his cousin, Lulu (now played by Alexa Havins), who requires a liver transplant.

Specialty distributor Ariztical Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to New Zealand-set wholesome gay love story ‘Mysterious Ways.’ Ariztical plans a multi-platform digital release in 2024.

Written and directed by New Zealand’s Paul Oremland, the film follows a media storm that threatens the marriage between a Vicar, portrayed by Richard Short (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) and his Samoan boyfriend, portrayed by Nick Afoa (“The Lion King”), after they announce their intentions to have a traditional wedding in the church.

The film also marks one of the first on-screen representations of what is known in the Samoan community as a fa’afafine. The character Billy is played by relative newcomer Joe Malu Folau. An integral part of Samoan culture, fa’afafine are assigned male identity at birth, but explicitly embody both masculine and feminine gender traits in a way unique to Polynesia.

Call Me Kat star Mayim Bialik has opened up about her experience learning about the death of her co-star Leslie Jordan. The series, which is a remake of the BBC show Miranda starring Miranda Hart, follows Bialik as Kat, a single woman in her late 30s who decides to spend her wedding fund on opening a cat café. In addition to Swoosie Kurtz, Kyla Pratt, Julian Gant, Cheyenne Jackson, and Christopher Rivas, the series starred Jordan as the head baker Phil before the star died in a car crash caused by a cardiac dysfunction in October 2022.

Bialik recently appeared on an episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show to talk about the experience of shooting the Miranda remake. Great news, gay cinephiles! LogoTV snapped up a compelling catalog of gay movies and has made them available for free online streaming! (Sorry international folks, we only have U.S. distribution rights, so like so much else these days, these are geo-blocked.)

Now these are small indie films, so while they all have gay storylines and most feature cute male casts, not all of them are cinematic gems. But hey, on the whole they don’t suck!

Some of them are actually pretty good. In fact, we count five that made our reader ranked list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies: Eating Out 2 (#85), Adam & Steve (#79), Eating Out (#56), Boy Culture (#36) and Latter Days (#5).

In Latter Days a young and promiscuous gay man sets his sights on seducing his Mormon missionary neighbor. The resulting affair changes both their lives. The film stars Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss and also has Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a supporting role.

Back in 2007, we ran an article called Gay Sex Scenes that Made Movie History. A delightfully naughty exploration of firsts and foresk- ... er, foremosts in terms of gay male intimacy on the silver screen, it celebrated some of the films that blew the celluloid closet to bits, one modesty sock at a time.

Six years later, it's shocking just how far pop culture has come in terms of normalizing gay characters and stories, and how much bolder the gay film audience has grown in demanding films that speak truthfully to their sexual experience (though, it must be said, the films that answer the call are usually decidedly outside of the mainstream). So we've decided to bring you an update to our foundational piece that looks at what has happened since. Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.

But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. Jordin Sparks isn't the first "American Idol" star to step away from the reality boob tube and give Hollywood a go, and she won't be the last. Her loosely biographical movie "Sparkle" — also featuring the late Whitney Houston, Mike Epps and Cee-Lo Green — is but the latest instance of an "Idol" star getting a close-up on the big screen.

Singer Carrie Underwood has a new interview out with N Focus magazine in which she discusses her healthy diet habits and reveals her favorite vegan snacks.

For starters, Underwood loves to nibble on "almonds, apples, dried fruit (with no added sugar ... don't understand why they add sugar to fruit), raw fruit and nut bars, maybe a few squares of super dark chocolate, and veggies and hummus."

She also tends to bring her own food and snacks to maintain control of her diet. "I am such a label reader and always take my food with me everywhere," she explained. "Eating out is a definite diet sabotage and most of the time, it's hard for me to find quick food to eat, so I always make my own food ahead of time and take it with me. That way, I know exactly what's in it and I can still stay healthy and satisfied when I'm working....

Celebrity Chef, Bobby Flay, is known for his calorific burgers at his franchise, Bobby's Burger Palace. But Flay has recently lost a bit of weight and credits his new healthy eating.

“For me, it’s all about moderation,” Flay says. “I don’t kick things out of my diet, like carbs. But I’m not going to eat fast food.”

The Iron Chef follows four simple rules.

Eating Out:

“When I go to a restaurant, I eat three-quarters of the food in front of me," Flay said. "That cuts my calorie intake by 25 percent.”

Eating for Taste:

“If something doesn’t taste good, I stop eating it,” the celebrity chef said.

No Late-Night Eating:

“I don’t eat late at night." Flay admits that he used to eat late-night meals with his restaurant staff.

Regular Exercise:

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy

It was one thing when Hollywood released two "friends with benefits"-themed movies this year a few months apart: No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits.

But a mainstream movie about an outright orgy? A Good Old Fashioned Orgy, which opened last weekend, seems like something new, right? Could it be that Americans, and American movies, are growing up? They're we're finally getting, um, religion on the topic of sex in film?

Of course, the problem with movie trend articles is that there are so many movies released every year that you can always find examples to support almost any point you want to make. I mean, when it comes to sex, Cruising (1980), Basic Instinct (1992), and Showgirls (1995) weren't exactly chopped liver.

A few weeks ago we asked readers to submit up to five of their favorite movies in our third annual favorite gay film poll. We wanted to see which older gay films have timeless appeal and which recent gay films you judged important enough to register in the rankings.

After voting closed we sorted through the nearly 15,000 nominations (representing over 500 individual titles) to identify your top fifty favorite gay films.

Tabulating this data is actually a bit harder than it sounds. For instance, do you know how many different ways our readers can type/abbreviate "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?" We counted about a dozen!

But we're not complaining, because the list that resulted this year is actually rather interesting.

Nine new films made their way into the rankings, and five of these are of very recent vintage. This represents a strong showing for current queer cinema.

Looking for something to watch tonight since regular TV is mostly crap tonight? Well, here is Eating Out 3. Okay, we didn't exactly give this comedy a rave review, but, well, that's just our opinion! Maybe you'll like it!

My favorite film of 2009, animated or otherwise, was Wes Anderson's delightful Fantastic Mr. Fox, which felt like the idiosyncratic filmmaker finally finding the perfect outlet for his precisely art-directed worldview. Based on the story by Roald Dahl, Fox follows a community of animals (besides Clooney and Streep, the voice cast includes Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, and Willem Dafoe) uniting together against a trio of vermin-hating farmers. With a lovely song score that includes everything from Burl Ives to the Beach Boys to Jarvis Cocker, it's a film that will enchant viewers of all ages.

2009 was a decent year for finding good gay-themed films on DVD. While Milk might seem a shoo-in for the list, I would suggest instead renting the original documentary about Harvey Milk, which is superior to the Van Sant film in almost every way (except budget). My choices this year include one very fine lesbian movie; I wish there were more in this vein to recommend. Some of these are more subtle than others in the manner in which they address their gay themes, but each is worth seeing and thinking about. I’ve chosen my top 12, not on the basis of whether the main characters are gay, or whether the film in question is a "gay movie." The Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (Flglff) is back for another five days of gay-friendly films, showcasing over two dozen movies from November 11th to the 15th.

Among the titles, all having their South Florida premieres, are holiday comedy "Make the Yuletide Gay," the Edgar Allen Poe-based thriller "House of Usher," and the sequel to hit gay franchise "Eating Out," "Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat."

On Friday the 13th, Gateway Cinema premieres "House of Usher," the latest Poe-adaptation from director David Decoteau, who also helmed the "Brotherhood" films. Also premiering the 13th at the Las Olas Riverfront Cinema is "Misconceptions," a comedy drama starring "Mad TV" album Orlando Jones.

Rebekah Kochan and Mink Stole return for thirds of "Eating Out" with the latest sequel, "Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat," which premieres Saturday, November 14th at Gateway Cinema.

A movie franchise is like a shark. For it to stay alive, it has to move forward. It’s a lesson that the Eating Out franchise would do well to learn.

I liked 2004’s Eating Out a lot. The campy gay sex farce was downright revolutionary coming after decades of earnest, angsty coming out dramas (and two years before Another Gay Movie).

2006’s Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds wasn’t as successful, but it wasn’t a disaster.

But Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat, now playing in limited release, is the weakest entry in the series so far. It’s not that parts of it aren’t funny. It’s just that the movie takes absolutely no chances, choosing instead to change a few details and repeat what came before in the first two movies.

Where I stand, I always have to eat out.  No wonder watching The Biggest Loser tonight made me feel whatever's found its way to my belly.  Not that I'm really fat.

This week, the contestants found themselves with a locked-up kitchen: chained cabinets and locked-up fridges meant another challenge of sorts from Alison.  The entire week, she says, everybody has to eat out for each of their meals.  Makes sense, actually, since it's a chance to learn about how to choose healthily when they're not at home and all that.  I never really thought of checking whether something I eat has too much this or too much that, which made me feel the problem that the contestants had when they had their first meals out--but, as Bob and Jillian taught all of us, it's about controlling your environment and checking the number of calories your food has.

Every year, it seems as if there’s only one small gay indie movie that breaks out of the pack and becomes the movie everyone talks about: Eating Out in 2004, Mysterious Skin in 2005, Another Gay Movie in 2006, Shelter in 2007, and Were the World Mine in 2008.

These are all pretty good movies, even if I didn’t always agree that they were the ones that most deserved to break out. (Last year, I liked Ciao more than Were the World Mine. And I liked Quinceañera more than either Shelter or Another Gay Movie.)

But I have a feeling that this year’s gay indie break-out movie will be Patrik, Age 1.5 – a Swedish film released last year in other countries, but only now being seen here in the U.S.

If it doesn’t break out, something’s truly not right in the world. It’s a flat-out wonderful movie.

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many of us think!).

There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.

This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay movies!

Not all of us spent our high school years pining for the quarterback of the football team. Some of us were more drawn to the shy, sensitive types — the kind of guys who actually listen when you speak, and who have something interesting to say in return.

From the "whatever happened to?" department comes word that actor Ryan Carnes has been cast in a new version of the classic comic book hero The Phantom.

It will be a four-hour TV movie for the Sci-Fi, excuse me, Sy-Fy Channel (rolls eyes) that will also serve as a pilot for a potential new series. If it sounds familiar, you may remember that Billy Zane starred in an ill-received theatrical version back in the 90's.

Ryan Carnes is probably best known for playing Justin, the boyfriend of Andrew (Shawn Pyfrom) on the early days of Desperate Housewives, and for famously showing his doodle in the queer indie hit Eating Out.
