The Terminator, King Kong and Michelle Yeoh on IMAX! Bristol’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival returns with a killer line-up for 2023
Image
For a community of die-hard, genre-loving film fans who grew up crouched over tiny glass TV screens, the holy grail has arrived. Some of the cult film world’s most influential (and most obscure) releases, projected large and loud, on an IMAX screen the size of a building.

Bristol’s new(ish) Forbidden Worlds Film Festival returns for a second year, from 18th-21st May, with a frankly ridiculous line-up of big-screen treats. Three strands that very much speak for themselves: Creature Creators (stop-motion pioneers and practical effects wizards), Video Shop Archives (old school cult classics), and Michelle Yeoh (nuff said). Kicking off with a Stan Winston double-feature on opening night, showcasing Winston’s iconic effects work in The Terminator, before a rare theatrical screening of his directorial debut Pumpkinhead, Forbidden Worlds is really going there with unusual, one-off events.

“We all have our favourites,” jokes Tessa Williams, one of...

‘Black Friday’ Review
Image
Stars: Devon Sawa, Ivana Baquero, Bruce Campbell, Stephen Peck, Michael Jai White, Ryan Lee | Written by Andy Greskoviak | Directed by Casey Tebo

Black Friday, every retail worker’s nightmare. We’ve all seen the memes comparing the mall zombies from Dawn of the Dead to shoppers pressed up against the doors, waiting for their chance to maim each other over a cheap TV set. And now, thanks to director Casey Tebo (Happy Birthday) and writer Andy Greskoviak, that meme has come full circle and inspired its own movie. Is it one worth lining up to get, or something to grab from the post-Christmas clearance rack?

It’s Black Friday, which as you probably know, has managed to creep up and possess Thanksgiving as well. This leaves Ken dropping his reluctant kids off at their grandparents as he heads in for his shift at We Love Toys. But at least he...

Will a woman finally win ‘The Masked Singer’? Night Angel leads our Season 3 predictions
Image
“The Masked Singer” has only been around for three seasons, but already an unfortunate pattern is emerging: women are being shut out of the top positions. So far we’ve had two male winners in T-Pain (Season 1’s Monster) and Wayne Brady (Season 2’s Fox), as well as two male runners-up in Donny Osmond (Season 1’s Peacock) and Chris Daughtry (Season 2’s Rottweiler). To compare, the most successful females on Fox’s wild and wacky reality TV show both had to settle for third place: Gladys Knight (Bee) the first year and Adrienne Bailon (Flamingo) the second year.

With the elimination of Jackie Evancho (Kitty) in this week’s quarter-finals, only one woman remains in the running to win Season 3’s Golden Mask: Night Angel. Can this sultry siren make “The Masked Singer” history by becoming the first woman champion? Hurry and make your predictions right now before the semi-finals air Wednesday,...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoiler: The Tree is …
Mask Singer (États-Unis) (2019)
We’ve reached the quarter-final stage of “The Masked Singer” with just six of the 12 stars still in the competition. Of these half dozen, who all sang on December 10, we are absolutely certain about the identity of one: the Tree. After watching all of her performances plus the clue videos, we are now even more convinced that we know the name of the famous face hidden behind that elaborate mask.

The Tree was the hit of week 1 with her cover of “High Hopes” by the Panic! at the Disco. We didn’t see her again until week 5 but the wait was worth it as she rocked the house with her version of the Aretha Franklin classic “Think.” Two weeks later, she changed it up with her rendition of the Meghan Trainor hit “No Excuses.”

In week 8, she secured her place in the quarterfinal with her over-the-top take on “Total Eclipse...

9-1-1's Aisha Hinds Weighs In on the Fallout From Hen's Traumatic Ordeal: 'It's Something That Will Stay With Her'
Rottweiler (2004)
Following Hen’s fatal roadside cliffhanger, Monday’s 9-1-1 revealed whether Aisha Hinds‘ character still has a future with the 118. And because this is 9-1-1, Hen’s nearest and dearest also faced new traumatic nightmares of their own.

Let’s start with the good news: Hen isn’t going anywhere. Not only did the investigation into the accident determine that Hen wasn’t to blame for the young woman’s death (damn you, faulty street lights!), but she also got a new appreciation for life after bumping into Stacey — the life coach who inspired her to become a...

The Masked Singer's Ladybug: I Knew Who Black Widow Was From the Start
Mask Singer (États-Unis) (2019)
As we’ve heard since the start of Season 1, The Masked Singer allows zero contact among its competitors, whose interactions are limited to wordless exchanges in passing on set. But Kelly Osbourne, whose alter ego Ladybug was unmasked Wednesday, says she knew exactly who was in the Black Widow costume the moment the spider first stepped on stage.

As soon as she saw Black Widow’s first performance, “I was like, ‘That’s Raven! I know her!'” Osbourne tells TVLine, saying that she realized later that producers had kept the chances of an accidental discovery to a minimum by...

When does ‘The Masked Singer’ return after the World Series?
Mask Singer (États-Unis) (2019)
With the World Series going to Game 7 on Wednesday (October 30), “The Masked Singer” is preempted for the second week in a row. So when does it return to the schedule? If you’re as obsessed as we are with this reality competition series, don’t despair: “The Masked Singer” will be back next week, November 6, at its usual time with episode 5 of season 2.

On that installment, which Fox has titled “Mask Us Anything,” six celebrities will sing again for the four judges and the studio audience. Of these half dozen contenders for the title, the Ladybug, Rottweiler and Tree first performed in week one while the Flower, Fox and Penguin did likewise in week three.

At the end of the hour-long episode, one of these six competitors will be unmasked. The following week, Nov. 13, will see the return of the five contestants who made it through on the last episode...

Mask Singer (États-Unis) (2019)

In the end, Panda ended up being eliminated and unmasked as Laila Ali, the former professional boxer and daughter of Muhammad Ali. The Masked Singer Season 2 Unmasks Its First 2 Celebrities
Pia Zadora in Butterfly (1981)
The Masked Singer has been back for one night and two celebrities have already been unmasked.  We met the first half of the contestants tonight, with pairs of singers going head-to-head for audience votes, then the losers of each of those competitions going up against each other to try to keep their mask on.  After we saw Butterfly, Thingamajig, Egg, Skeleton, Ice Cream, Ladybug, Rottweiler, and Tree, it was Egg and Ice Cream who ended up having to say goodbye to their heads, which is actually fine because those two costumes were giving us the creeps. Egg's got a whole egg face with a cooked egg on his head, and Ice Cream has the scariest smile of all the contestants and we will not miss looking at...

Insurance Company Cancels Woman’s Policy After Seeing Photo of Her Dogs on Facebook
A scary reminder that almost anyone can see what you are doing online, Melina Efthimiadis of Timberlake, North Carolina, lost coverage after her former insurance company found a photo of her dogs on Facebook.

According to ABC11.com, the drama started when Efthimiadis and her husband applied for personal umbrella liability insurance to be added to their Nationwide homeowners policy. As part of the application, the couple had to list the number of dogs they owned and their breeds. Efthimiadis truthfully listed she and her husband are pet parents to three canines: a Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix, a hound and hound/Lab mix.

FEARnet Movie Review: 'Amphibious: Creature of the Deep'
Brian Yuzna
There were at least three reasons I was inordinately excited to see the movie entitled Amphibious: Creature of the Deep:

  1. It's a movie about a giant sea monster, which is probably my very favorite type of movie.   2. The director is Brian Yuzna, whom horror freaks will remember from his collaborations with Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dolls) or from his time spent in Spain on flicks like Rottweiler and Dagon.   3. The movie was made in Indonesia, which is where The Raid comes from, and I was hoping that this monster movie would mark another firm step forward for the nation's genre output.    Unfortunately for all involved, Amphibious has a lot more assets on the page than it does on the screen, and while you've probably seen worse monster movies during a random Saturday night visit to the SyFy Channel, there's no denying that this is a cheap, chintzy, and ultimately tiresome little export.

Arrow Video Announces Fantastic Factory Presents…
Brian Yuzna
All you DVD collecting horror fanatics out there have probably noticed some of the awesome releases that have been coming out of the UK’s Arrow Video as of late. They do an amazing job packaging their discs, windowed slip covers, allowing you to choose which of the multiple artworks to display on your shelf, posters, and several discs to hold all the fantastic extras. They know what we collectors want, and they provide.

Now Arrow is releasing their first several film box set, and it is, brace yourself… all Fantastic Factory titles.

The Fantastic Factory was a branch of Filmax founded in 2000 in Barcelona by filmmakers Brian Yuzna and Julio Fernández. The purpose of the studio was to make modestly budgeted genre films in English for an international audience, to have more opportunities to work with genre favorites like Screaming Mad George and Jeffrey Combs, and, of course, to...

Review: 'Paintball'
Brian Yuzna
Astute horror fans will recognize the Spanish production company Filmax as the outfit that gave us [Rec], The Kovax Box, that "6 Films to Keep You Awake" series, and a handful of collaborations with American filmmaker Brian Yuzna. (That partnership yielded titles like Rottweiler, Werewolf Hunter: The Legend of Romasanta, and Beyond Re-Animator.) So obviously we're dealing with an outfit that really likes its horror flicks, and that may help to explain why I'm probably being a little kinder to their newest offering. It's a basic slasher-type horror flick called Paintball, and yes, the film is precisely what you think it is. We open with a military man who promises the finest paintball war games under the sun....

Paul Naschy 1934 – 2009
Paul Naschy in La Furie des vampires (1971)
Spanish horror legend dies.

Jacinto Molina Álvarez, better known worldwide as Paul Naschy, died at his Madrid home Tuesday morning following a year long battle with cancer. The actor, writer, producer and director publicly played down the extent of his ill health, attributing his appearance in a wheelchair at last October’s Sitges Festival to mere fatigue after a long journey and few people were aware of the gravity of his illness. I last talked to Paul three weeks ago and he spoke as enthusiastically as ever about the numerous projects he had on the go: sound editing on the vampire movie Empusa which he directed, the completion of the script for a wartime horror thriller titled Groton El Grande and his pet project, Mi Perro Aquiles, for which he had secured the services of Christopher Lee in the role of Don Quijote.

Naschy rose to fame on the international...

Spanish Horror Film Legend Paul Naschy Dies
Spanish actor Paul Naschy was a leading star in horror films for forty years from the late 1960s. He was best known for his role as the tragic werewolf, Waldemar Daninsky, which he originated in the 1968 film La Marca del Hombre Lobo (Mark of the Wolfman) from his own script. Though the film pitted Daninsky against a pair of vampires, the movie was oddly retitled Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror when it was released in the United States. He went on to play the werewolf in nearly a dozen subsequent films, many that he also co-scripted under his real name, Jacinto Molina.

Naschy was born Jacinto Alvarez Molina in Madrid on September 6, 1934. He began working in films as an extra in the 1961 biblical feature King of Kings. He appeared in small roles in a handful of films in the 1960s before creating the role of the werewolf Daninsky.

Daninsky returned in...

Afm '09: Brian Yuzna Directing 'Amphibious 3D'
It has been quite some time since Brian Yuzna got behind the camera (most recently beneath Still Waters, Rottweiler, Beyond Re-Animator), but the producer-turned-director is looking at making his next project in 3-D. In Amphibious 3D, a marine research expedition to the exotic Sumatran Sea turns treacherous as it encounters a supernatural prehistoric creature resurfacing with a vengeance. Michael Paré, Janna Fassaert and Francis Magee all star. The pic was shot in Stereoscopic 3D - polarized for Th release in Real D or Dolby 3D. It will also be available in anaglyph and interactive polarized shutter for video release. The film was produced by Celsius Entertainment.

The Scary Bits: Everything's 3-D!
Most horror geeks know Brian Yuzna as a frequent Stuart Gordon collaborator who helped to bring us Re-Animator, From Beyond, and the underrated Dolls. Younger gene freaks would also know Mr. Y from his numerous Filmax productions, which include Dagon, Rottweiler, and (of course) Beyond Re-Animator. But now, according to Big V, Brian is about to deliver a trio of 3-D horror flicks. The first will be a giant monster movie called Amphibious, the second will be Brett Leonard's Necronauts, and the third will be Richard Stanley's Cold Blooded. Now, I call this news all sorts of interesting because A) Stanley doesn't direct many films, B) Leonard has never directed a good film, and C) they're all 3-D horror movies! With monsters!

Questions: Does Danny Boyle want to direct 28 Months Later? Maybe. Will next year's Friday the 13th Part 3 DVD come in 3-D? Sure looks like it. Want...
