Last week I wondered just how much plot Sons Of Anarchy had left to wrap up in its final hour (or hour and a half; the episodes have gotten rather long). As Sons of Anarchy fans continue to debate whether they love or hate Jax (Charlie Hunnam) after the series' penultimate episode, there's one character, Nero (Jimmy Smits), who most folks believe deserves to make it out of Charming alive. At the end of "Red Rose," viewers saw Nero sitting on Gemma's bed sobbing: No news from Unser (Dayton Callie), whom Nero had sent to Oregon to intercept Gemma (Katey Sagal) before Jax could put a bullet in her, was bad news. Coming in to the penultimate episode of Sons Of Anarchy’s final season, I had certain expectations. I was sure that we would get an episode of filler before the major conflicts were resolved in the finale. I was ready for that.

There has been far too strong a focus on gang politics and not on the character drama that has driven this show from the start, and for much of this episode it seemed that this major problem was still very much in play. As what is sure to be a highly combustible ending to Sons Of Anarchy approaches, it’s fair to day the final ride has been a journey that has ran the entire gamut of human emotion. After the tortuous viewing experience of Suits Of Woe, that two week break was needed so viewers could regain a little composure before gearing up for the penultimate episode.

It was a good thing that Sons of Anarchy took a breath last week, and paused before its final two episodes, because Lord, they were (and are going to be) incredibly intense. The carnage continued in "Red Rose," but the deaths were all from choices that those characters specifically made. Yet, among all of the emotional moments, there was still business to take care of. The chaos of the streets doesn't ever take a break, not even for family trauma (which, in this case, also happened to cause it). Hit the jump for why "I'm ready." In the real world, there are consequences. Television writers, on the other hand, make a living from creating stories which can’t seem to help but incessantly glorify violence and gloss over the aftermath. It makes for good TV, watching the “bad guys” get what’s coming to them and watching the “good guys” ride off into the sunset – but sometimes it’s also the easy way out. If “Red Roses” accomplished anything, it’s that Sons of Anarchy is by no means taking the easy way out as it sets the stage for the series finale.

As a whole, Sons of Anarchy has done an admirable job all along of not sugarcoating the fallout of Samcro’s decisions. There’s been a consistently high body count left in the show’s wake, but...

With so many central characters reminiscing about mistakes made and their pasts, there are more than enough people to choose from when guessing who says their final goodbyes, making the actual moments that much more powerful when they arrive.
