The power of TikTok can singlehandedly make a song, from reviving oldies to turning aspiring artists’ off-the-cuff samples into full-fledged songs. Over the past couple years, that power has proven particularly effective for indie artists who otherwise might struggle to get their stuff heard. Now, we’ve officially had the summer of indies on TikTok: 60% of the platform’s Top 10 hits this summer were independently distributed.
Most of these distributors make up what Music Business Worldwide refers to as “the middle class” of music-making. They’re not The Big Four, but they’re not artists totally DIYing, either. While labels of all sizes generally want to get their tracks on TikTok, these indie labels don’t have the same contentious history with the platform, have quicker turnaround times than the biggies, and many of them have embraced TikTok as the premiere method of advertising new artists and songs.

LeVar Burton is a jack of many trades, given that he’s an award-winning actor, director, and education advocate. While the actor has been a part of numerous movies and shows, he’s globally famous for playing Kunte Kinte in Roots and Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The show ran for a total of seven seasons, and Burton directed some episodes of it as well.
LeVar Burton in Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) || Paramount Pictures
In the show, his character, Geordi La Forge, has been blind since birth, and to tackle this, he uses an advanced Visor instrument. However, this visual tool also had additional repercussions for the actor, compelling him to experiment with a different acting technique.
LeVar Burton tried out a new method of acting due to his Visor
The Visor was connected to the character’s optic nerve and further allowed him to see and perceive the world.

UK network ITV has posted Q1 revenues down 7%, as its studios division felt the impact of last year’s Hollywood labor strikes.
The commercial broadcaster’s total revenue was £887M ($1.1B), compared with £952M in 2023, with a recovery in the ad market offset by a 16% dip at ITV Studios.
The Media and Entertainment unit that houses its main network was up 2% at £505M, according to a trading update this morning. Earnings weren’t broken out.
Total revenue at ITV Studios, which makes the likes of Love Island and Mr Bates Vs the Post Office were £382M, down on the £457M in the same period last year.
According to ITV, this was “due to the phasing of deliveries which are heavily weighted to H2 and the expected impact from both the 2023 U.S. writers and actors strikes and the weaker demand from free-to-air broadcasters in Europe who have been holding back...

U.K. broadcaster ITV has reported mixed financial fortunes for the first quarter of 2024.
Its advertising revenue growth of 3%, with the second quarter expected to be up around 12%, is offset by the downturn in revenues from ITV Studios. Total revenue was down 7% to £887 million ($1.10 billion), between January and March, compared to £952 million ($1.18 billion) during the same period in 2023.
Within that total, ITV Studios revenues were down by 16% to £382 million (2023: £457 million), “due to the phasing of deliveries which are heavily weighted to H2 and the expected impact from both the 2023 U.S. writers and actors strikes and the weaker demand from free-to-air broadcasters in Europe who have been holding back spend until they see more certainty in the advertising market,” the broadcaster said.

Welcome to the island of St Jory, population: one less than there used to be.
A year ago, St Jory teenager Cai Prideaux went missing and the police did very little about it. Now there’s a new sheriff in town in Sgt Grace Narayan (Anjli Mohindra), an outsider with an unbending belief in the letter of the law that’s ruffling feathers among the locals. The islanders, you see, are used to running things their own way. The True Way.
That’s the Hot Fuzz-meets-The Wicker Man premise for The Red King, an original six-part series written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse and directed by Daniel O’Hara and Lisa Clarke. It’s a crime drama/folk horror mash-up that uses murder mystery trappings to tell a story about religion, insularity and national identity.
St Jory is your typical folk horror island in that there’s nothing typical about it.

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has discussed the potential for a Sherlock project, expressing his ongoing enthusiasm to bring the detective series back in a big way. Ideally, he wants the characters to reunite for a Sherlock reunion film.
Gatiss co-created the series with Steven Moffat and has previously voiced his ambition to adapt Sherlock into a movie, but emphasized that the right people need to be on board for it to happen. In a recent interview with Deadline, Palmer discussed the difficulty of getting the show's stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman together to film due to their busy Hollywood schedules.

Sherlock co-creator and star Mark Gatiss has said he and the team behind the popular detective drama are still interested in adapting the series for the big screen.
Gatiss, who created the show with Steven Moffat, was quizzed on a Sherlock film adaptation last night by Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye on the green carpet at the 2024 Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Hurray for the Riff Raff dropped by CBS Mornings’ studio to perform three tracks from their new album The Past Is Still Alive for “Saturday Sessions.”
For the mini-concert, singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra — who uses they/them pronouns — delivered the first three songs from the recently released LP, “Alibi,” “Buffalo,” and “Hawkmoon,” accompanied by NNAMDÏ on bass.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Segarra broke down The Past Is Still Alive, an album informed by grief, like the death of Segarra’s father and, as on “Alibi,” a childhood friend who had become addicted to heroin.

Mark Gatiss will co-write and star in Bookish, a crime drama for Alibi, and here are the details of the new show.
It’s been several years since the last project by The League Of Gentlemen, and there is as of yet so sign of any further adventures for Sherlock. However, in the intervening years, Mark Gatiss has kept himself busy with a number of projects, from his annual Mr James Ghost Story For Christmas films, collaborating with Steven Moffat again on Dracula and directing Moffat’s debut play The Unfriend.
His next television project will be Bookish, a crime drama for Alibi he wrote with Matthew Sweet.
The synopsis reads as follows:
London, 1946 is the dynamic, dangerous and chaotic setting for this stylish new detective drama, with the eccentric Gabriel Book (Gatiss) at the very heart of the story: a self-appointed consultant detective to the local police. The thousands...

One week before Alynda Segarra’s father died, he mailed them a package. It was a box of all the music Segarra had sent him over the span of nearly 20 years, ever since they’d left their childhood home in the Bronx to travel the country. Everything they’d recorded, from burned CDs for street and jazz bands they’d played in, to records from Segarra’s own band of more than a decade, Hurray for the Riff Raff, was in there.

It’s been a decade of reinvention for Hurray for the Riff Raff, the recording moniker of singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra. After years of street-busking and self-releasing acoustic records, Segarra cemented their status as an old-timey roots standard-bearer on 2014 Small Town Heroes. But over the course of their past two albums–2017’s The Navigator and 2021’s Life On Earth–Segarra chipped away at that artistic identity by exploring other musical lineages (everything from alt-pop to punk to Nuyorican folk-poetry) while carving out a truer artistic self. Their new album, The Past Is Still Alive,...

“Alibi,” the opening track of Hurray for the Riff Raff’s The Past Is Still Alive, embraces the sense of invincibility that comes from facing down the very worst that life can throw at you. “You don’t have to die if you don’t wanna die/You can take it all back in the nick of time,” Alynda Segarra sings. The arrangement, featuring organ and bursts of tambourine, imbues the song with a sense of resilience and liberation—a relentlessly forward-moving spirit that recalls the music of Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Waxahatchee.
The rest of The Past Is Still Alive is likewise informed by recollections of both a friend’s addiction and the passing of Segarra’s father, charting a determined, if sometimes uneasy, journey to make peace with uncomfortable truths. “Snake Plant” alternates between pleasantly mundane memories to direct addresses to a friend battling addiction (“I know...

Kenneth Branagh's supernatural thriller, A Haunting in Venice, is sparking a resurgence of Agatha Christie's works in Hollywood. While Branagh's Hercule Poirot trilogy currently has no confirmations of future installments, James Prichard, Christie's great-grandson and CEO of the Christie estate, affirms that the filmmaker could make as many movies as he wants. There’s no shortage of brilliant detectives in novels, film and television, but one of the greatest — or at least the one with the fanciest facial hair — is Hercule Poirot. The Belgian investigator, created by Agatha Christie, has appeared 33 novels, more than 50 short stories, and has been played by a variety of iconic actors.
But for whatever reason, Poirot has only sporadically appeared on the big screen, with many of his earliest movie appearances being lost to time, while some of his other noteworthy adventures were rewritten as vehicles for Christie’s other beloved creation, Miss Marple.
Here we take a look at the various theatrically-released adventures of Hercule Poirot, from the 1930s to today, and see which of his mysteries were truly worth solving.

Mes enfants! A Haunting in Venice marks the third entry in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie movie series, finally giving us enough evidence to sift through in order to solve the present mystery: who is the best screen Hercule Poirot?
Taking into account appearance, accent, mannerisms, brilliance of mind, vanity, theatricality, humour, pathos, and of course the all-important moustache, here’s our ranking from most unfortunately disappointing version of the detective, to Poirot perfection.
A bit of housekeeping: only English-language screen Poirots have been included, so no radio, animated, international or videogame versions appear below, nor do bit-part sketch comedy Hercules. The nine actors in contention range almost a century in time, several inches in height, and vastly in their take on what makes a proper Poirot.

A Haunting in Venice, the third installment in Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot film series, marks a turning point for the film series, as while the first installment, Branagh’s 2017 remake of Murder on the Orient Express, was a box office success, the previous entry, Death on the Nile, was one of the biggest box office flops of 2022.
Unlike Branagh’s remakes of Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express, A Haunting in Venice is based on Agatha Christie’s previously un-filmed 1969 Poirot novel Hallowe’en Party, and the supernatural-themed A Haunting in Venice clearly represents an attempt, after the failure of Death on the Nile, to appeal to a broader and younger audience, including horror fans.
Indeed, with A Haunting in Venice, Branagh has made a gothic horror film in which Branagh’s legendary Belgian detective Poirot visits a supposedly haunted mansion, where Poirot witnesses a Halloween-night séance,...

If you thought you'd seen the last of Hercule Poirot, think again. Agatha Christie's famous Belgian detective, who has appeared in countless of her mystery novels, returns in "A Haunting in Venice," which is set to premiere on Sept. 15. The movie is based on Christie's 1969 novel "Hallowe'en Party," which revolves around Poirot embroiled in another murder mystery. The original story takes place at a Halloween party, while the upcoming adaptation sees the detective at a séance.
"A Haunting in Venice" coproducer and director Kenneth Branagh is set to reprise his role as Poirot for the third time in the upcoming film. He first made his debut as Poirot in the star-studded 2017 film "Murder on the Orient Express." Five years later, he returned as Poirot in the 2022 movie "Death on the Nile," which also had a stacked cast. The third film in the Branagh trilogy will also feature huge stars...

Kenneth Branagh's potential return as Hercule Poirot in future movies opens up a vast catalog of Agatha Christie novels to explore. "The Big Four" offers a fresh and gripping entry in Branagh's Poirot universe with international settings and villains. "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" provides an opportunity for Branagh to reinterpret this revolutionary and controversial crime novel with amusing results.
With Kenneth Branagh returning as Hercule Poirot in A Haunting in Venice, there has been much speculation as to what novel his franchise may adapt next. The director, screenwriter, and actor’s third outing as Poirot is interestingly based on one of Agatha Christie’s most polarizing novels, Hallowe’en Party. A voracious bibliophile, Branagh has always had a soft spot for literary adaptations. This is more than evident from the British multi-hyphenate's film adaptations of William Shakespeare's plays like Hamlet, Henry V, Othello, and others. His obsession...

Producer James Prichard hints at the possibility of more Hercule Poirot films with Kenneth Branagh as the detective, due to Christie's extensive catalog of stories. Branagh's unique take on Poirot has reintroduced Christie's beloved works to a new generation and could make significant contributions to the mystery genre. The next adaptation of a Christie book could be The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, a widely acclaimed masterpiece that has only been adapted once before in a lost 1931 film.
A Haunting in Venice producer James Prichard has hinted that Kenneth Branagh’s detective Hercule Poirot could potentially return in many more outings to come. Officially marking the third time Branagh has played Agatha Christie’s iconic Belgian sleuth, A Haunting in Venice is the latest installment in a cinematic franchise that began with 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express. A Star Is Born is an emotional journey that's hard not to fall in love with. Bradley Cooper directed, starred in, and helped write this remake of the 1937 film and excelled in every role. A Star Is Born was critically acclaimed and was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Picture. However, the emotional core of the movie is the music, and it won for Best Original Song. Main characters Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) and Ally Maine (Lady Gaga) both speak the truth through their songs and there are so many great lyrics in A Star Is Born to unpack.
There are so many great pieces of music throughout the film that narrowing down all the A Star Is Born songs down to just the best of the best is no easy task. The most powerful songs from A Star Is Born leave a distinct impression however,...

Agatha Christie is one of the best-known crime novelists ever. She published over 125 written works between 1924 and her death in 1976, including 74 novels. Her works have sold more than two billion copies, and she is the second best-selling fiction author ever, second only to William Shakespeare. Christie's stories are ripe for adaptation; the first film adaptation came in 1928 with the first non-English language adaptation coming a year later. Foreign filmmakers have taken a particular liking to Christie's work. Of the more than 30 film adaptations, 14 are non-English adaptations. The best adaptations of her work are wide-ranging and are made in many different countries.
Even today, Christie's mystery novels continue to be popular among readers all over the world. They are still being adapted into television series and movies whether they're stand-alone stories or part of the mysteries solved by Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. There's one thing you can say about every single Academy Award nominee: whether they're good films or bad films, beloved or obscure, they are officially in the history books. Future movie lovers will read about them and, often, watch them out of either passionate interest or mild curiosity, decades later.
And that's a very good thing because a lot of the films that are nominated for the Oscars fall into obscurity pretty quickly. We may remember most of the Best Picture winners, for example, but what about the other films in contention? "Casablanca" won Best Picture at the 16th Academy Awards and it's a film most people can quote directly, even if they've never watched it before. But there's a good chance that many of its fellow nominees that same year — films like "The Human Comedy," "The More the Merrier," and "Watch On the Rhine" — aren't nearly as well known today.

In addition to the hundreds of hours of already existing content, Discovery and BBC Studios will develop new landmark factual content together. The two companies will co-fund a dedicated development team within BBC Studios.

Following its Oscar-winning turn for Lady Gaga’s Best Original Song “Shallow,” the Bradley Cooper-directed film “A Star is Born” is returning to theaters for one week starting on March 1.
But the new “encore” version that Warner Bros. is releasing will feature 12 additional minutes of footage, including extended takes of songs and one entirely new song not previously heard in the film or on the soundtrack album.
The encore version of “A Star is Born” now kicks off with the full performance of “Black Eyes,” the rock/country jam as performed by Bradley Cooper and written by Lukas Nelson that opens the film. It also has the full version of another Cooper and Nelson collaboration, “Alibi,” which is performed just before Gaga’s Ally first takes the stage with Cooper.
