Lino Brocka was collaborating with writer Ricky Lee for this film to be set in Culion, the leper colony in the Philippines, when he met his untimely death. Actor Christopher De Leon then took over the directorial duties. Ricky Lee would later pen the screenplay for another production, "Culion" (2019).
