A surprisingly strong contender for the most lethal horror movie monster has a shockingly high kill count. Thanks to their enduring nature and lethal tactics, many of the horror genre's most famous villains have earned dozens of kills over the course of their respective series. Characters like Michael Meyers keep pushing the limits of the past, with the kill counts in films like Halloween Kills pushing the characters to new horrifying heights.
The long-running nature and supernatural qualities of some of these characters explain how they're able to amass such high body counts. The most iconic villains in the genre have amassed plenty of kills in various horror films, reboots, and remakes, with franchises like Halloween or Friday the 13th amassing plenty across decades. However, there's a surprisingly strong contender for the highest kill-count in the genre, even when limited to on-screen kills and ignoring the original franchise that inspired it.

2005 was filled with great slasher, spooky, and creature-feature movies. Early 2000s horror movies weren't afraid to push boundaries and scare audiences in new and exciting ways. Movies like Saw 2, Hostel, and The Devil's Rejects displayed a whole new type of brutal horror subgenre and showed just how terrifying the world could be in these franchises. These graphically violent movies weren't the first of their genre, but they brought the shock value that audiences felt worldwide.
Released in the same year, movies like The Ring 2 and The Exorcism of Emily Rose were about ominous, supernatural horror. These movies were about suffering from within and the vengeful spirits inside the main characters. There was such a wide range of horror movies, proving that people loved all subgenres of horror movies and were open to anything unsettling. 2005 was the year of fear in movies, from realistic, sadistic killers to supernatural horror...

“Doom Patrol” and “Cloak & Dagger” actor Miles Mussenden is set to co-lead alongside Britt Bankhead (“Winchester”) in mystery thriller Croatoan, Variety reports today. The thriller also marks the feature directorial debut by Bankhead.
Nico Tirozzi (Monster Summer), Grace Patterson (Slotherhouse), and Mike Markoff (Hit Man)also star in Croatoan.
Mussenden stars as “a father whose family road trip leads him to a desolate small town. After his son (Tirozzi) disappears, Bankhead’s character resorts to teaming with two detectives (Mussenden and Patterson) and parsing the community’s oddballs to investigate the local, supernatural legend of ‘Croatoan.'”
While that logline offers the only plot details revealed at this time, the film’s title brings the historical “Lost Colony” to mind. It refers to the Roanoke Colony established in 1585, which seemingly disappeared without a trace when a ship arrived in 1590 to find the colony abandoned with only the cryptic word “Croatoan” carved into a tree.

Dcu head James Gunn asserted he's not a big fan of Asian movie remakes. However, 2002's The Ring, a U.S. horror adaptation of 1998's Ringu, is one exception he's willing to make.
James Gunn shared his favorite remake films in a lively conversation on Threads. His list is dominated by Western horror films like The Thing, The Fly, It, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers; it also included 2006's The Departed, a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs. One Threads user commented that film is better than Martin Scorsese's take; Gunn chimed in and named The Ring as his all-time favorite Asian film remake. "I'd actually say the best remake of an Asian film (they're almost never good) is The Ring," he wrote. As I’m sure you wonderful gore-hounds know by now, we love every weird and wonderful sub genre the twisted world of horror has thrown our way over the years. Sit this particular horror fan down to watch the latest splatterfest, zombie massacre, creature feature or slasher flick, to name but a few, and I’d be happy as a pig in shit. Happier in fact. Folk horror and witchcraft is one subgenre that I’ve grown to increasingly appreciate over the years, and most recently the work of Robert Eggers, for example, has had me enthralled. It was his 2015 folk horror, The Witch, that first introduced me to his nuanced, macabre yet beautifully crafted movies, and everything he’s produced since has been a must see. The trailer for his take on Nosferatu has just dropped at the time of writing this video and it looks immense. However, with...

The Ring franchise, which includes 14 films, began with the 1995 TV film Ringu, and its popularity has influenced the horror genre. The franchise offers two different ways to watch the films: in order of release date or in chronological order of events. Each film in the franchise contributes to the overarching storyline and expands on the lore of the curse, introducing new characters and plot twists.
The critically acclaimed horror franchise The Ring movies, in order, consists of several timelines, remakes, and sequels, making it hard to keep track of its fourteen films' order by release date and chronology. While there have been several remakes of the franchise, The Ring movies' popularity began with its 1998 feature-length film Ringu. The film became a pioneer for the J-horror genre and earned worldwide critical acclaim thanks to its achievements in visuals, sound design, and cinematography. The Ring's chilling supernatural tale has become a major influence on the horror genre.

Koji Suzuki's novel "Ring" was first published in 1991, and no one could have guessed that the simple, tech-based ghost story would spawn a decades-long, worldwide media franchise that incorporates multiple movies, crossovers, comics, audio dramas, and video games. If one does a deep dive into the entire "Ring" series, one will uncover a massively complicated mythos that repeatedly peels back layers of reality to reveal an onion-like media metafiction that Marshall McLuhan would be proud of.
The premise of "Ring" is wicked and fun, and would have been all the more terrifying in 1991 when VHS was still in vogue. In the book, an investigative reporter named Asakawa finds a cursed video cassette of a surreal, 20-minute short film. At the end of the video, a captain informs him that he has seven days to live. Asakawa takes the threat seriously, as several teenage girls who watched the video have already died.

Horror is iterative, but it just as regularly moves through the same cycles decade after decade, ostensibly breaking new ground, when in reality, the genre is simply doing what is has always done. Today's horror landscape, for as remarkable and diverse as it is, is principally a landscape of legacy sequels. The horror of yesterday is new again, and commonly, old faces and names are dredged up to headline the latest nostalgic bloodbath. Reasonably, the present iteration could be decried as Hollywood's lack of originality, though seasoned horror veterans have seen this cycle before.
The early aughts were replete with imported horrors. Hollywood studios regularly borrowed transnational scares, repackaged them, and presented them as the next big thing. They were successful, too. Gore Verbinski's "The Ring," a remake of Hideo Nakata's "Ring," grossed nearly $250 million when released in 2002. Hollywood studios also remade the likes of "A Tale of Two Sisters,...

As reported by People, Bonnie Morgan, the actor who almost played Topanga Lawrence on Boy Meets World, recently stated that she lost the role because director David Trainer didn't think she was "pretty enough."
While chatting on the most recent episode of iHeart Radio's Pod Meets World, Morgan told former Boy Meets World stars Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle that she was 12 years old at the time and that the role of Topanga seemed perfect for her.
Morgan said, "Even the name was out of my parents' love history. It was the coolest thing ever."
The actor, who also works as a contortionist, told the others that playing Topanga was "easy" for her and that she believed she'd gotten the role. Morgan then added that she "didn't know" that there was a chance that she could be fired until it happened.

Some horror movies have become so successful they've been remade over and over again. Hollywood knows if something worked once, it will work again, encouraging studios to build films into franchises by reworking them again and again. Classic horror films and 70s/80s slashers have all been expanded into franchises throughout the years. Likewise, filmmakers will never stop revisiting Dracula or Frankenstein, whether it's a recreation of the original films or taking the famous characters and putting them in a new setting.
The same thing goes for more modern films that came out in the 90s or 2000s. If an audience takes a liking to a movie, it's rare that a movie will end with just one film. When it comes to horror films, there are plenty of ways for the movies to reinvent themselves or be sold to a new generation. With updated technology, filmmakers can improve outdated scenes,...

Twenty-seven years ago, Drew Barrymore’s movie night was ruined when she picked up a phone call that should have gone unanswered. The resulting carnage remains one of the most chilling moments in slasher cinema. Thus began Scream, a horror movie that changed the face of the genre and which nearly three decades later is still going strong. In fact, Ghostface—the mysterious and chatty Halloween costume worn by various killers—ranks these days among the movie monsters he once idolized. Freddy, Jason, even Michael Myers have had to make room for a character whose series is arguably just as popular now as it was in 1996.
Through it all, the Scream movies have found surprisingly consistent ways of keeping the formula fresh while maintaining the core concept: a group of young people who consider themselves media savvy find themselves trapped in a retro scary movie that also doubles as a particularly gory whodunit.

By drawing parallels and subtle references to The Ring, Netflix's Red Rose revives an iconic J-horror trope. Red Rose has an intriguing take on horror where, without having any supernatural elements, it instills chills and thrills by harping on real-world threats like online privacy and the exploitation of digital technology. Adding more depth and insight to its depiction of the growing terrors and anxieties surrounding the virtual world, Red Rose also finds an emotional footing by putting character ahead of its tech-centric mysteries and narrative devices.
The Netflix horror drama follows a typical three-arc structure in which its second and third arcs focus on unraveling the mysteries of its central Red Rose app and examining the torrid relationships between its characters. While there are a few harrowing moments in these arcs, Red Rose's horror shines through primarily in its opening episodes. One of the biggest reasons behind this...

Children are a reliable staple of horror. You don't want to see a child get hurt or killed, fictional or not, and the death of one can become the most stomach-churning part of a movie, but it becomes truly twisted when the child themselves is the one doing the hurting or killing. Some of the best monsters in cinema history are, or take the form of, children, and that can be represented in several ways. The Bad Seed (1956) is the first movie to represent the first cluster of characters: Rhonda is deceptively sweet and stereotypically adorable, but is actually a cold-hearted killer, explained by incredibly outdated psychology. Other characters followed the same trope, such as Henry of The Good Son (1993), while some straddled the line between cute and disturbing like Esther of Orphan (2009), giving a character more of a macabre vibe before you even learn the truth about her. It is very easy to underestimate the importance of a good, spooky horror soundtrack. Sound effects get all the glory for creating effective scares that make us jump out of our seats, but a great horror soundtrack can keep us up all night and make a horror movie iconic. After all, what would "Jaws" be without John Williams? What would "Suspiria" be if the gorgeous visuals weren't accompanied by the sounds of Goblin? Or "The Exorcist" without that 15-second bit from the absurdly long "Tubular Bells?"

Based on a true story, the show is about a married couple, played by Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale, whose dream home turns into a total disaster. After they move in, they're harassed by a stalker who signs their letters as simply "The Watcher." Warner Bros. Discovery has had a rough go of it recently. The newly-formed mega corporation’s decision to callously prune HBO Max’s servers of hours of content has led to mountains of bad PR and billions of dollars in market cap losses. Suffice it to say, a jam-packed list of new HBO Max releases for September 2022 would provide some welcome relief for the “House of the House of the Dragon.”
Unfortunately, HBO Max’s new releases this month are uncommonly light. It’s impossible to say whether this is the result of more Wbd meddling or simply some bad scheduling luck but either way it’s not going to make any executives’ seats less warm. There are only a handful of notable originals this month, led by season 2 of the Spanish language comedy Los Espookys on Sept. 16. That is joined by a pair of documentaries, Escape from Kabul on Sept.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Exclusive: Black Widow cinematographer Gabriel Beristain has signed on to direct adaptations of the books Brooklyn Story and 11 Days in Hell, which were recently acquired by Wallner Media.
The former project is a film, which Suzanne Corso adapted from her best-selling novel of the same name. The latter is a TV series, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by William T. Harper. Beristain will direct all 11 episodes, scripted by Bruce and Brett Moore.
The first novel in a trilogy, Brooklyn Story is set in the summer of 1978. It centers on Samantha Bonti, who is fifteen years old, half Jewish and half Italian, and hesitantly edging toward pure Brooklyn, even if her dreams of something more are bigger than the neighborhood girls’ teased hair. Samantha lives in Bensonhurst with her mother, Joan, a woman abandoned and scarred in a ruinous marriage, poisoned with cynicism, and shackled by addictions,...

“False Positive,” which hit Hulu on Friday, sees Ilana Glazer terrorized by a sinister pregnancy and an even more sinister fertility doctor (Pierce Brosnan). The “Rosemary’s Baby” vibes have us reminiscing on not just that classic film but on all of the villainous children of horror history.
Let’s countdown film’s best cases for birth control, Aka the creepiest kids of cinema.
A24 10. Charlie, “Hereditary” (2018)
While young Charlie is ultimately a victim in Ari Aster’s instant-classic debut feature, “Hereditary,” she sure does make an eerie impression. Actress Milly Shapiro, in her first film role, imbues the troubled teen trope with a sense of otherworldly dread, rendering the character’s thousand-yard stares and periodic tongue-clicking genuinely creepy instead of comical. Although she is absent for the film’s off-the-walls final act, Charlie’s untimely demise remains one of the most shocking movie moments of recent memory.

Along with the promise that our decisions would have galaxy-wide consequences (which turned out to be…mostly true), one of Mass Effect‘s biggest selling points was the ability to command a ship and assemble a squad of companions that would join us on our journeys and help us fulfill our Star Trek dreams.
While Shepard is the star of the Mass Effect trilogy, it’s hard to deny that some of the game’s most compelling characters are the ones who serve alongside him aboard the Normandy and stand by his side during the game’s most dangerous adventures. Many Mass Effect players know their crew better than they know their family, which is both a testament to the quality of the game’s characters and a testament to the quality of awkward Thanksgiving dinner guests everywhere.

No, folks, this is not an April fools day joke. A movie called The Jurassic Games has started production. And it promises to mashup the best elements of popular franchises The Hunger Games and Jurassic World. It doesn't sound like your typical spoof, either, but instead will be an on-the-level sci-fi action thriller. Though, probably not with the big budget VFX you're used to seeing at the local cinema.

Most of the time when a studio looks to revive or remake an old property it’s a desperate grasp for more money, but I’m willing to give the people behind Rings a little more credit than that. The Ring is about a shared video, and the ways in which we share and consume videos has changed so much in the 15 years since the original came out. Rings exists to carry the franchise into the YouTube era, and it pays off on a lot of the promise offered by the new technology (although not actually YouTube which was strange). Rings is a clever movie, but clever isn’t enough on its own— and unfortunately, clever is all Rings has.
I absolutely adored the use of new technology. There’s a sequence where Samara emerges from a flat screen TV that has fallen face down on the floor that never...

When film series’ dissipate it is sometimes difficult to tell whether one is watching a sequel, remake, spin-off, re-imagining or something else entirely. Most box office analysts predicted that Split would fail to win for a third weekend in a row, going up against Paramount's Rings and Stx Entertainment's The Space Between Us. A surprisingly small third frame decline and an underperforming crop of newcomers lead to Split winning for a third weekend in a row with $14.5 million. Its domestic total now stands at $98.7 million, with a worldwide haul of $142.7 million from just a $9 million budget.
Director M. Night Shyamalan's Split has already surpassed the totals for his last low-budget thriller, The Visit, which earned $65.2 million domestically and $98.4 million worldwide from just a $5 million budget in the fall of 2015. While it was a fairly close race, Rings came in a somewhat close second place with $13 million, debuting in 2,931 theaters for a middling $4,435 per-screen average, according to Box Office Mojo. If crap movies carried penalties for inflicting torture on audiences, then Rings would merit a death sentence. This overdose of cinematic Lunesta takes the horror out of horrorshow – and the show is lost as well, since Spanish director F. Javier Gutiérrez doesn't seem remotely interested in rousing anything in us besides all-consuming apathy.

I have to admit before I start this review that I’m not the biggest fan of the Ring franchise. I’ve seen them, I don’t hate them, but I can’t say I ever loved them. Rings didn’t change that. Unfortunately, what started as a chance to reinvigorate a franchise ended up making it look worse.
From the very outset, Rings feels more like a shoehorned idea rather than a major plot point. Whereas Samara seemed subtle before, she’s so omnipresent in this one that it feels artificial and strange.
The story of Rings is the story of Julia (Matilda Lutz), who travels across the country to find her boyfriend Holt (Alex Roe) after he goes missing. After running into his professor Gabriel (Johnny Galecki), she finds herself caught up in a large scandal and ultimately a part of the infamous curse. She sets out to...

Her curse only takes seven days to work its deadly magic, but it’s been over ten years since Samara was last seen on the big screen in the American version of the Ring franchise. That all changes with the release of Rings this weekend, and while it does share the same name as Jonathan Liebesman’s 2005 short film that bridges the gap between The Ring and The Ring Two, it doesn’t share its predecessor’s ability to get under your skin.
The Ring Two was released in March of 2005, and a lot has changed in the nearly 12 intervening years between then and now, especially with technology. While mobile connectivity was becoming more commonplace in ’05 (when flip phones were seemingly multiplying overnight like rabbits in the summertime), the concept of being constantly “plugged in” was vastly different than today’s screen-centric culture. Thanks to smartphones, laptops, and even virtual reality headsets,...

Was there a clamoring we all somehow missed for a movie that would bring back the killer videotape that turns a viewer’s life into a seven-day rental? One would have thought that 2005’s “The Ring Two” had drained that well dry (pun intended); that follow-up even got us all to feel sorry for its director, Hideo Nakata, who made the original Japanese films (“Ringu” and “Ringu 2”) that got Hollywood interested in gore-less creeps and sinister girls with long black hair in the first place. It seemed there just wasn’t that franchise zip in “The Ring” the way “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” could.

Well-dwelling Samara gets streamed in Rings, an HD reboot of The Ring, yet the genre has shown that a tech update doesn’t always lead to more scares
Nearly 12 years after The Ring Two – and 15 years after The Ring and 19 years after Ringu, the original Japanese horror movie that inspired it – Rings opens in theaters this Friday. The producers, Walter F Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, have stuck around for all three American versions, but there are no holdovers from the cast and crew – no Naomi Watts, no Gore Verbinski (director of The Ring) or Hideo Nakata (director of Ringu and The Ring Two), no Ehren Kruger (screenwriter of both the first and second Americanizations). In terms of continuity, it feels like a game of telephone where the line has been severed completely and we’re not even hearing gibberish on the other end. We need to be reminded why, exactly,...

When Paramount started moving forward with Rings in early 2015, there was talk that this project was actually a prequel to the 2002 hit thriller The Ring, which starred Naomi Watts as Rachel Keller, Martin Henderson as Noah Clay and Daveigh Chase as the iconic Samara Morgan. When shooting began just a few weeks later, director F. Javier Gutierrez confirmed that this story is actually a sequel, although none of the original cast members were brought back for this follow-up. F. Javier Gutierrez revealed in a new interview that he had actually considering bringing back Naomi Watts as Rachel Keller, but the reason it never happened may surprise you.
The Ring, which was based on the hit Japanese thriller Ringu, was a big hit at the box office, taking in $129.1 million domestically and $249.3 million worldwide from a $48 million budget. The 2005 sequel, The Ring Two, wasn't quite as successful, earning $76.2 million domestic and...
