Chris Cooper is an Oscar-winning actor who has brought his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. Let’s take a look back at 17 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The movie kicked off a decades long collaboration between the actor and director, with the two pairing up for such titles as “City of Hope” (1991), “Lone Star” (1996), “Silver City” (2004) and “Amigo” (2010).
He hit the Oscar jackpot with his supporting turn in Spike Jonze‘s “Adaptation” (2002), a self-reflective comedy about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman‘s (Nicolas Cage) struggles to adapt Susan Orlean‘s (Meryl Streep) nonfiction book “The Orchid Thief.” Cooper played John Laroche, the eccentric, swampy horticulturalist at the center of Orlean’s story.

The character of Chief Miles O'Brien first appeared in the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Encounter at Farpoint". Throughout the show's first season, Chief O'Brien would appear mostly in the Enterprise's transporter room, tasked with beaming the Enterprise crew up and down from dangerous away missions. As the show progressed, O'Brien was allowed to speak up more and more. By the show's fourth season, O'Brien would marry his sweetheart Keiko (Rosalind Chao), become possessed by an alien criminal, and reveal long-lasting Ptsd. All told, O'Brien was in 52 episodes of "Next Generation" before becoming a regular cast member of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," affording him 160 additional episodes.
O'Brien was played by reliable Irish actor Colm Meany, star of John Houston's "The Dead," "Dick Tracy," and "The Commitments" (and its sequels). He was a hard worker, and during his 12-year stint on "Star Trek," appeared in 23 feature films.

As far as rock & roll goes, Alejandro Escovedo’s new song “Sonica USA” is a true melting pot – which is apt, given that the performer’s career has been about as varied they get. The first song to be released from the Escovedo’s next LP, The Crossing, “Sonica USA” also includes an appearance by one of his musical heroes, Wayne Kramer.

It looks like the team saved their spookiest stop for last on "Haunted Highway" (Tue., 10 p.m. Et on Spike). They wrapped their first season in a haunted mining town. Silver City, Idaho was once home to hundreds of active mines and millions of dollars of metals, but now it's home to some seriously scary activity.
They set up to explore several buildings from the 1800s where people had reportedly died via suicides, fires and several other means. And the houses didn't waste any time reacting to their presence.
The team heard footsteps, watched as a rocking chair began to rock on its own, a door creaked open and a lamp pivoted. But none of this was as scary as the close encounter one member of the team had.
She was in a shaft in the house when the latched door right next to her slammed closed and locked her inside.

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "We Need to Talk About Kevin" What's It About? Tilda Swinton stars as the mother of Kevin (Ezra Miller), a disturbed young man who commits a violent Columbine-like school massacre. The film chronicles Kevin's upbringing and attempts to answer whether his mother's parenting is at fault. See It Because: While it's not an easy movie to watch -- lesser films would have laid on the Lifetime TV movie melodrama or tried to wrap it up with a simple answer -- "Kevin" is buoyed by a fantastic set of performances from mother and son. Swinton's chameleon-like ability to convey any character makes her one of the best actors working today, and the 19-year-old Miller deserves all of the critical kudos for his creepy breakout performance. Minor flap over the price difference between regions leads the developer VectorCell and publisher Lexis Numérique to offer fans the opportunity to vote how much the upcoming downloadable survival game will cost.
It all started when the pricing for Amy was announced for Psn and Xbla in the U.S.: 800 Ms Points ($10) and $12.99 for Psn. Apparently, Amy will cost about €10 in the EU while maintaining its 800 Ms Point price, with the Psn price representing the exchange rate between the Euro and the dollar.
Some fans were still a little put off by the price difference between regions and so the publisher and developer decided to hold a little poll. While they've set up a Facebook voting page, Amy is now listed at £7.99 on the game's official site, and you have until January 9th to weigh in on whether the Psn version gets a cross-regional price drop, bringing the U.

Too often I fall victim to the classic “judging a book by its cover” and miss out on a great band simply because of their name (Foster the People, anyone?). A few years ago, I recall seeing “Ghostland Observatory” emblazoned seemingly everywhere I looked: magazines, music news, festival lineups. What the heck does it even mean? To this day, I have no freakin’ clue, but I’ve been making up for lost time by catching their concerts – a digital light show extravaganza – at every opportunity and preaching their greatness to anyone within earshot.
Surprisingly, Ghostland is just a duo of best buds from a place where it’s cool to be weird: Austin, Texas. Thomas Ross Turner mans the drums/keys/synthesizers, providing most of the signature Ghostland digital bleeps and blurps that the band is famous for.
He frequently, or pretty much always, dons a cape,...

On Wednesday, Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan kicked off their The Dark Knight Rises viral campaign with a fake CIA "bulletin" for a missing Russian scientist named Leonid Pavel (Alon Aboutboul). A second CIA "document" reveals a redacted transcript, which also relates to the "missing" Dr. Pavel.
Then on Thursday, a third document centering on Alon Aboutboul's character, Dr. Leonid Pavel, was revealed, along with the website OperationEarlyBird.com, which contained a clock counting down to 10:00 am this Friday morning. This was all believed to be leading up to "a major cultural event."
It has been confirmed that Alon Aboutboul's Leonid Pavel is a central character in The Dark Knight Rises prologue, which will be in IMAX theaters staring December 16th, attached to IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. And now, the clock has ticked to zero.

In the biggest development story of the summer, Johnny Depp told Walt Disney Studios he’ll only star in The Lone Ranger if Gore Verbinski stays on as director. Earlier, Disney halted production on its highly anticipated adaptation of the classic western The Lone Ranger just months before shooting was set to begin this fall. According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Verbinski and Depp agreed to cut their own salary packages to help shrink the film's budget from $250 million closer to the $215 million mark set by Disney. After Disney instructed film workers in Silver City, New Mexico to stop tearing down a western town built for the movie, a sign that a compromise was pending, Depp reiterated his commitment to Verbinski.

Vera Farmiga's Higher Ground "admirably tries, on a minuscule budget, to evoke the spirit of American cinema from 35 years ago: the age of Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall, an era much more hospitable to serious roles for women than the current one." Melissa Anderson in the Voice: "As reported in a New York Times Magazine cover story on the actress in 2006 (three years before her Oscar-nominated performance in Up in the Air), Farmiga has expressed her disgust with the roles offered her by setting scripts on fire: 'I stack up all those crass female characters, all those utterly ordinary women, all those hundreds and hundreds of parts that have no substance or meaning and turn them into a blazing pyre.' It's a shame, then, that Higher Ground never really ignites."

A trailer for the upcoming video game Amy hit the web. This premiered at the German expo GamesCom. Amy takes place in December 2034 in the small town of Silver City (Midwest, USA) after a comet strikes, wreaking havoc on humanity and unleashing a deadly virus that has infected almost everyone. Summer can be a depressing time for moviegoers. The “biggest” films, often having been anticipated for years, regularly end up ranging from terrible disappointments to mediocre events, with few actually delivering. Here we are, in the heat of the blockbuster season and that has certainly been the case. This month sees a fair share of popcorn pleasers, but it is another month where the true highlights lie in mostly limited releases. Check it out below.
See:

Lexis Numérique have today unveiled a new behind the scenes featurette for Amy, the survival horror game developed by a team headed by industry veteran Paul Cuisset (creator of the classic Flashback), who appears in the video talking about tech and visual effects used to build the game.
The game takes place in December 2034 when the gradual effects of global warming have spread diseases and natural disasters around the world. Amid this bleak scenario, the small town of Silver City in the USA’s Midwest suffers a near cataclysmic incident when it is stuck by an unidentified ‘comet’ from outer space. When lead character Lana regains consciousness, her world has descended into mayhem. Violent outbursts, fury, rage, wreckage and death; the world she knew seems to have become a living hell. As if struck by a mysterious virus, most of the people she once knew have now become part of a wild horde.

Amy is eight years old, and she is autistic, but she is in posession of some "curious powres.

A fair number of you readers are probably too young to remember the original release of "Flashback," the 1992 adventure game that continues to live on today in a recent iOS port. The designer behind that classic was Paul Cuisset, who now runs the show at the VectorCell development studio in France. Cuisset and his team are currently working on their next effort, a PlayStation Network release called "Amy" which looks to combine survival horrifying with the equally dreadful task of babysitting.

They're calling it a teaser trailer but at two and a half minutes long, it provides more than a hint of what to expect from Cowboys & Aliens, next year's summer multiplex bait. The promo introduces us to Harrison Ford's Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde, the man who holds frontier town Silver City, Arizona in a vice-like grip. And to Daniel Craig's Jake Lonergan, the outlaw who might just have the key to the town's survival.

Richard Linklater filmed in the U.K. Jim Jarmusch made his last in Spain. And John Sayles, we'll he went completely off-course, heading of all places to Manilla. As I was putting this piece together collection of stills, I came across this post, which uncovered the production's blog, trailer and what not. I'll admit to having skipped on Honeydripper - which was also a Tiff presentation, I had no idea that since then, he was working on Amigo, which was first announced as a San Sebastian Film Festival selection, prior to being called out last Tuesday for Tiff. I've yet to see anything comes close in terms of quality to his 1996 film Lone Star, I felt Silver City was rather forgettable and counted too much on satire - but if I remember correctly, Chris Cooper who reunites with Sayles on Amigo, wasn't too shabby. Scanning the pics below, I find no sign of him.

"Cowboys and Aliens" could be one of the most anticipated movies by fanboys in next summer. As if the footage shown at Comic Con was not teasing enough, the film will present another jaw-dropping sequence as Olivia Wilde has bared all for a scene in the movie.
Adam Beach who plays Harrison Ford's henchman Nat Colorado in the film has dished on the filming process, telling Jam "We just finished shooting Olivia Wilde naked in front of a bonfire in front of 500 Apache warriors." He additionally gushes, "That was beautiful. You won't get to see what I saw, but you'll get a glimpse."
Asked about her nude scene, Wilde confirmed it, saying "Did Adam Beach talk to you? Adam Beach is the best. Last night, we did a scene where I'm naked in front of a group of couple hundred Apache. Pretty amazing, pretty interesting."

Silver City, Ariz. - An unknown alien craft witnessed by Apache Nation members and locals has brought more than just tourism to this booming Arizona mining town. A communication blackout quickly resulted in the city council announcing a 'call to arms' against the illegal aliens. "They're hiding among us," one councilman shouted. "Communications with federal governing officials have failed and support seems meager from elsewhere," another called. A statement from the Mayor's Office said, "Were not dealing with these aliens anymore and we can only identify them by the real color of their skin." A rider was quickly dispatched to deliver the disposition of the towns dire situation affecting the citizens of Silver City, Arizona.

Like many filmmakers, John Sayles got his start in horror, writing scripts for Piranha, Alligator, and even The Howling. But where others used modest beginnings to springboard into superstardom, Sayles continued modestly, becoming the leading name in indie film and creating a relatively small but wildly diverse catalog of films. He merged wacky aliens with racial commentary in The Brother from Another Planet, tackled sports history for Eight Men Out, detailed Latin America struggles in Men with Guns, and even offered some George Dubya satire with Silver City. Yet within that diversity, he became known for his ability to weave a myriad of disparate characters into one solitary and dynamic plot.
But Limbo is a film of an utterly different sort. Shot in 1999, it took the same ideas that have always interested Sayles -- real people and environments free of the rosy Hollywood sheen -- and didn't allow the web to be woven together.
