The movie is based on the successful stage play with the same name, also written by Maria Goos. The four main actors are the same as in the theatre version.
Actors Peter Blok, Pierre Bokma and Gijs Scholten van Aschat and director Willem van de Sande Bakhuyzen are real life college friends.
The word cloaca can mean sewage, it can also mean the end of the rectum in birds and reptiles, from which they not only defecate, but also lay eggs. The word can also be used to indicate the lowest order of mammals.

The film scenario of Cloaca differs - much more compared with Familie (2001) - from the stage script. In contrast to the play, the film plays at different locations. The composition of the cast, on the other hand, was not changed.
