With season two of Star Wars: Visions coming in 2023, I wanted to look back at each short from season one and celebrate why they’re great. This is Visions Remembered.
It took me a long time to truly appreciate Akakiri. As Science Saru’s second entry after To-B1, I did appreciate it had a completely different tone and style from the cute Astroboy-inspired episode earlier in the season. Still, I struggled with this short for a long time. I thought it was a real bummer tone to end Star Wars: Visions on. But the more I sat with Akakiri, I began to see it in a different light. Each time I watched it, I came to appreciate the story more and more. That’s because I had a realization after talking with a friend of mine about Rey and Ben Solo’s relationship.
The truth is Akakiri is one...

Astro Boy is considered one of Japan’s most iconic anime series. It’s often considered the first successful anime in the United States to help the rise of the medium in Western cultures. So it’s no surprise that one of the Star Wars: Visions shorts would pay homage to the series with To-B1. And of course, there are plenty of nods to Mega Man too in there too!
Like The Twins and The Elder both from Studio Trigger, I like watching To-B1 back to back with a later entry in this series being Akakiri. That’s because they’re both from studio Science Saru. It shows the range of the studio by showcasing the more cute side of...

The Ninth Jedi is actually incredibly hard for me to write about. Brought to us by Production Ig aka Studio I.G., the reason this was the hardest one for me to tackle is the fact that The Ninth Jedi is so good. It’s the most solid entry from Star Wars: Visions. There’s a reason why it’s universally thought to be the best of the group or at least in people’s top rankings. When things are this good, it’s hard to point out just one or two things that make it stand out. I could probably write a full-length essay on this episode. I’ll do my best to keep this somewhat short.

In recent years, the international popularity of manga has led to an increased interest in manhwa and manhua. Manga, manhwa, and manhua sound the same and, generally speaking, are similar in artwork and layout, which can result in accidentally categorizing these comics as all being Japanese in origin. The question of what manhwa and manhua is a frequent refrain, especially given that one of these has historically been kept out of the West.
However, there are several subtle but important differences between the three. This can be noted in the art styles of the creators involved, not to mention the country-exclusive names. Since there is so much anime being produced today,...

It's sometimes a rare treat to see an anime series actually finish its story, since it's rather common for an anime to either go on hiatus or never finish the original manga's story at all. Recent anime titles, meanwhile, haven't even had a chance to finish their stories yet, such as My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, so anime fans end up with a lot of unfinished stories. However, there are some wonderful exceptions to that trend.
In past decades, fantastic anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood finished their stories, and more recently, other great anime titles have done the same. From 2020 to the present, fun anime series in all different genres crossed the finish line and aired their final seasons or concluded with anime movies. Anime fans can either watch these series for the first time or revisit them so they can get a complete viewing experience.

Anime has been an exponentially increasing market since its inception. With the help of streaming and network distribution, anime has also become a worldwide phenomenon. A multibillion-dollar industry that doesn't show any signs of stopping, anime is probably Japan's largest and most influential cultural export.
With a seemingly endless supply of shows and stories, even the most dedicated fans couldn't keep up with everything being released. There are lots of different ways to measure the success of a franchise, but the most obvious one would be in terms of its commercial success and financial revenue.

In response to growing criticism and international scrutiny, Japan is taking decisive steps to address the long-standing issue of worker exploitation within its thriving anime industry.
New legislation aimed at protecting freelancers and a formal study by the Japan Fair Trade Commission (FTC) signal a significant shift towards improving labor practices in a sector that has seen exponential financial growth but persistent concerns over worker welfare.
This move comes in the wake of a United Nations report highlighting the anime industry’s poor treatment of workers, contrasting sharply with the industry’s global $21 billion sales and its importance as a key Japanese export.
New laws to protect anime industry staff:
The new law for freelancers, which took effect in November 2024, mandates written contracts for all freelance workers, including those in the anime industry. These contracts must clearly specify pay details and working conditions.

The job of an anime voice actor can be extremely difficult and excruciatingly long. And for legendary characters like Goku, the difficulty of the role is on a completely different level. However, the burden of this role has been taken on by one voice actor, and she is none other than Masako Nozawa, the voice artist who has been voicing Goku for almost four decades.
Nozawa’s journey as a voice actor started in 1963, and since then she hasn’t stopped at all. Among her most prominent roles, it is safe to say that Goku is her biggest achievement. She started voicing him in 1986 when the first Dragon Ball series came out, and ever since then, everywhere Goku goes, she is chosen to voice the character.

As more and more time passes, retro anime continues to fall out of the public eye. Anime that were once the pinnacle of their time fall into obscurity. However, this doesn't need to be the end of such anime. All it would take to return them to popularity is a proper remake, perhaps even one by Studio Ghibli.
Although the studio typically creates their own works, they're no stranger to creating films for other franchises. One of their earliest works is Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, bringing the gentleman thief Lupin more attention as he steals the audience's hearts. Studio Ghibli could revitalize other retro anime with a movie, if that was something they chose to do.

Few anime franchises are more popular than Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball and Kishimoto Masashi's Naruto. These two iconic anime series have introduced millions of fans around the world to the anime medium, and although they're both decades old, they continue to spawn new sequels like Dragon Ball Daima and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex that still entertain audiences.
As one of many shonen anime series that were inspired by the success of Dragon Ball, the Naruto franchise features no shortage of references to Goku's many adventures. This includes one attack from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations that clearly parallels what is arguably the most climactic moment in Dragon Ball Z's entire narrative: the Father-Son Kamehameha used by Gohan to defeat Cell.

Jurassic Park is one of the most influential stories in modern mythology, but a bizarre theory connects it to an iconic 61-year-old sci-fi series. Inspiration often comes from unexpected places. Without Akira Kurosawa's films, Star Wars might have been a very different story. Similarly, The Lion King is said to have been inspired by Kimba the White Lion and It! The Terror From Beyond Space reportedly inspired Alien. These examples raise questions about the fine line between homage, inspiration, and convergent evolution in pop culture. In the case of Jurassic Park, while it emerged as a defining blockbuster of the '90s, its origins may be traced back decades earlier to the legendary anime Astro Boy.

Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel/sequel to 2019's The Lion King, itself a remake of the 1994 animated classic. Mufasa sees Rafiki telling the story of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) to his granddaughter, Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter). Kiara and the audience learn how Mufasa became king of the Pride Lands, how his brother Scar, formerly named Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), got his namesake, and how a rift grew between the brothers.
Mufasa's main antagonist is Kiros (Mads Mikkelsen), a white lion who looks to kill every bloodline so that he is the true Lion King. Mufasa: The Lion King's intent with Kiros is a commentary on colonization, but there might be another underlying reason behind making the villain of a Lion King movie, specifically a white lion. It all comes back to a popular manga, one that many have accused Disney of ripping off. While Disney has denied these claims,...

Osamu Tezuka reshaped Japanese pop culture with his manga "Astro Boy." In a future world, Japanese science minister Dr. Tenma loses his son Tobio in a car accident. He recreates Tobio as an android, Astro (known as Atom in the original Japanese). The manga is a futuristic reimagining of "Pinocchio" that becomes a superhero story.

The creator of the Gundam franchise isn’t afraid to speak openly about the industry, his rivalries, and his feelings about his own work. Yoshiyuki Tomino is considered the father of the “Real Robot” mecha anime genre and the Mobile Suit Gundam series is his legacy in the anime industry.

2009 marked the 13th Anniversary of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, created by the legendary Yoshiyuki Tomino. The director has shaped the mecha anime genre to lengths he doesn’t even acknowledge and refuses to accept his status as an auteur. For this anniversary, he directed Ring of Gundam, a 5-minute special short film made with CGI, introducing a completely new artistic style to the world of Gundam.
Despite taking up the challenge of a CGI style, Tomino’s preference and loyalty always remain with hand-drawn animation. He’s true to his word as he speaks about this in an interview detailing how CGI was a huge challenge for him as the industry at the time hadn’t evolved beyond Pixar’s animation.

In Tomino’s classic candid fashion, he also criticized an Imagi Animation Studios film, Astro Boy, that came out in the same year.

It is a known fact that Osamu Tezuka revolutionized the manga industry. From Astro Boy to Metropolis, Tezuka created iconic masterpieces as a stalwart. The legendary mangaka is often referred to as the Godfather of anime.
Apart from his contributions to the manga industry, he influenced the advancements in the animation industry. On the whole, he was a true visionary with strong beliefs. Something that his son wouldn’t quite agree on.

With AI-generated anime Twins Hinahima’s release, Tezuka’s son Makoto released a contentious statement. This contrasts with technological advancements that cripple the manga industry. It goes against Tezuka’s beliefs as a visionary and pioneer in every sense.
Moreover, his claims about the late mangaka accepting assistance from AI are beyond controversial. The upcoming series reflects utter dependency on technology and has garnered a negative reception from most anime viewers.

Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino is known for his fearless words, as he never holds back from speaking his mind in interviews. The mecha genre once ruled the roost among anime, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. From cartoonish Super Robot anime to the more grounded Real Robot shows, these shows helped make the anime medium what it is. While mecha eventually saw a downturn in popularity, it's currently seeing something of a resurgence, which could see some classic and overlooked shows remade.
Several mecha anime are ripe for remakes, including entries in one of the biggest mecha franchises. Other shows were ahead of their time or missed the mark, but they're still worthy of new incarnations. With anime remakes all the rage in the past decade, it's time for mecha to take advantage of this.

Anime has a long and storied history, with the mecha genre standing as one of its most enduring and influential pillars. Spanning over 50 years, the genre features a wide range of iconic series and films, each striving to be named the best and captivating generations of fans globally.
The rise of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy in 1963 set the stage for the mecha genre. In 1972, Go Nagai's Mazinger Z introduced the concept of piloted mecha, sparking the genre’s popularity. This momentum led to iconic series like Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) and The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982). Howl’s Moving Castle had some of the best music in animated films, but most people think of Joe Hisaishi and his creations for the Hayao Miyazaki films. Most of the ending themes of his movies are always by a separate artist and for Howl’s Moving Castle, it was The Promise of the World, sung by Chieko Baisho and written by the famous poet and translator, Shuntaro Tanikawa. Unfortunately, Tanikawa passed away on 13 November 2024, at the age of 92, as reported by his son, Kensaku Tanikawa.

His touching words of poetry and music were a gem of Japan. His legacy will never be forgotten, especially his contribution to Japanese literature and in terms of music, to Howl’s Moving Castle and the theme of Astro Boy. Shuntaro Tanikawa was a master of free verse and his long career is a testament to his brilliance.

As opposed to modern animation, Ghibli has set its benchmark in filmmaking. Through their traditional and handcrafted methods, the studio has produced some of the most iconic works of all time. But even Miyazaki can go overboard with his criticism.

Lewis Carroll's 1871 fable "Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There" features a notable scene wherein the young titular protagonist runs across a pair of whimsically dunderheaded identical twins while lost in an alternate dimension. The characters are named Tweedledee and Tweedledum and are based on numerous 18th-century folk poems variously attributed to John Byron, John Pope, and Jonathan Swift. In an early epigram by Byron, the two characters agree to have a battle but are startled by a crow, and forget to fight each other. It wouldn't be until the publication of "Through the Looking Glass," and John Tenniel's illustrations therein, that Tweedledee and Tweedledum would be depicted as identical twins.
In Carroll's book, the twins reenact the Byron epigram and flee when a crow appears. Some might say that Tweedledee and Tweedledum represent easily distracted governments, or merely the capriciousness of children. Either way,...
