‘Friends’ Spinoff ‘Joey’ Can’t Be Found on HBO Max, and Here’s Why (Exclusive)
Image

An HBO Max spokesperson confirmed that the streamer hasn’t licensed “Joey” yet, “but we’re always assessing available shows to see what will be a good fit and well received by subscribers.”

The Matt LeBlanc comedy aired on NBC from 2004 to 2006 as a direct sequel to “Friends,” and followed LeBlanc’s character, Joey Tribbiani, as he moved to Los Angeles to advance his career as an actor. Drea de Matteo starred as Joey’s older sister, Gina, while Paulo Costanzo was his nephew, Michael. Jennifer Coolidge, Andrea Anders, Ben Falcone and Miguel A. Nunez Jr. also starred.

Media Theatre's Wizard Of Oz Plays Through 1/10/2010
"The Wizard of Oz", L. Frank Baum's family friendly fantasy in which a young Dorothy travels over the rainbow after a twister hits her Uncle's farm, is one of the most popular stories of all time due to the iconic film version. While the film celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the stage version of the musical based on the movie claims The Media Theatre stage as its home this holiday season (Nov. 24, 2009-Jan. 10, 2010).

The Media Theatre will produce The Royal Shakespeare Company's version of the musical, which includes all of the well-known songs from the film ("Over the Rainbow", "If I Only Had A Brain", "Follow The Yellow Brick Road") and a number cut from the original movie ("Jitterbug"). Temple University's Peter Reynolds, who directed Media's popular "Altar Boyz" last season, will take the helm for "Oz".

Blu-ray review: Kevin Smith 3-Movie Collection (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back)
The newly released Kevin Smith three-movie box set contains the popular director’s three most popular films in beautiful Blu-ray quality. Containing his debut Clerks, along with Chasing Amy and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Smith’s new box set captures a lot of crap you missed the first time around.

Kevin Smith is usually a big hit with internet writers thanks in part to his humble origin, legendary (or hyped, depending on who you ask) beginnings and his rather soft physique. He also represents the film/comic book/video game subculture, which has made serious strides to becoming a mainstream, high covered phenomenon on the verge of losing its trademark and sarcasm.

Or he just makes funny movies.

The legend of Kevin Smith is a classic American success story. A film school reject, Smith decided to break away from schools, books and teacher’s dirty looks and make his...

Blu-Ray Review: Beloved Kevin Smith Films Released in High Definition
Chicago – Very few filmmakers provoke the same kind of passionate adoration as the sometimes-great Kevin Smith, a man who has such a following that he can sell out large theaters filled with people who merely want to ask him questions for hours. Smith is a charismatic, interesting, clever filmmaker and his best work reflect his gregarious personality. Three of his best are captured in “The Kevin Smith Collection,” including two films with all-new Blu-Ray material.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

If you were designing the Kevin Smith set and could only pick three films, what would you choose? The man has directed eight full-length feature films and we can probably cut “Jersey Girl” from consideration from the beginning, leaving seven to choose from. Personally, I would go with three different periods of his work and choose “Clerks,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” and “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” but then that...

Kevin Smith 3-Movie Collection (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) – Blu-ray
Blu-ray Review

Kevin Smith 3-Movie Collection (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back)

Directed by: Kevin Smith

Rating: R

Due Out: November 17, 2009

Who’S It For? With the fan-based nature of his movies, if you like these titles from writer/director Kevin Smith, then you probably own them already. It’s really up to you if you want to shell out ninety dollars to have their latest incarnation, though none of them really demand a high definition presentation except for maybe the more Hollywood Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The documentaries about each movie are fun watches, but perhaps you should put this on your wish list before your immediate shopping list.

Movies:

Clerks

Kevin Smith embraces the suckage of work by finding the amusing nature of the weird sh*t that can go on during one shift. Slaving away at a beat down convenience store on...

Blu-ray Review: The Kevin Smith Collection
I am an unashamed Kevin Smith fan, and primarily of his earlier, less mature work. If there's such a thing as quality dick and fart joke movies, I would say Kevin's pre-Jersey Girl films fit the description. While I wasn't a big fan of either Clerks 2 or Zack and Miri Make a Porno, films such as Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Mallrats and Dogma are personal comedic favorites of mine and Miramax's Kevin Smith Blu-ray collection brings two of those along with what may be Smith's most respected film, Chasing Amy, home in a tidy little package.

To begin, the collection includes the first ever Blu-ray releases of Clerks and Chasing Amy as well as the previously released Blu-ray edition of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. If you already own the Jay and Silent Bob Blu-ray this is the exact same thing with the included audio commentary,...

Commercial ad rates on the broadcast networks - nowhere near the riches of 2004
Ad Age's annual charticle on commercial ad rates may reveal that ABC’s FlashForward is commanding the richest, per-30-second ad rate out of all new shows this season ... but it ain't no According to Jim. Say what? Just take a look at the ad rates from only five years ago when Jim -- yes, that benign, so-so rated comedy that stayed on the air for an astonishing seven seasons -- was generating some $204,212 per 30-second spot for ABC. Obviously, the market was a lot better in those days -- you know, when everyone was working for bloated companies while...

David Schwimmer is slated to direct a Clive Owen indie. And Matthew Perry is co-writing and exec producing a comedy series inspired by -- himself. Clive Owen And Catherine Keener Sign On To Trust
Clive Owen and Catherine Keener will topline the dark drama Trust, which marks David Schwimmer's first foray into the non-comedic directorial world.

Schwimmer has directed several comedy TV shows in his time, most notably Friends, Joey and Little Britain USA, and his feature directorial debut was in 2007 with the comedy Run Fatboy Run, starring Simon Pegg. His new film, Trust, will pose a new challenge for him, telling the story of a couple (Keener and Owen) who are shocked to discover that their teenage daughter (played by Liana Liberato) has been victimized by a sexual predator whom she met in an online chat room.

Filming begins this November, so presumably the film will be released some time next year.

How would a Comcast-nbc Universal deal shake up the executive ranks?
The flood of reports that Ge is looking to spin off NBC-Universal and give Comcast control of half of the company doesn't exactly come as a shock if you consider the myriad of problems that continue to plague the entertainment division. The movie division has endured a horrible box office run of late (Land of the Lost, Bruno and Funny People all underperformed for the studio this summer) so rumors have been floating for months that Universal Pictures' co-chairmen David Linde and Marc Schmuger would be replaced. And though the ailing TV division did a little housecleaning of its...

Matt LeBlanc's new series: How you doin'?
Matt LeBlanc is getting a new show? Get thee behind me, thoughts of Joey! The Showtime project, created by David Crane and Jeffry Klarik, follows "a British couple whose hit UK show is turned into a dumbed-down American sitcom starring LeBlanc (as himself)." I...am optimistic, particularly because this has been an otherwise solid week for Friends alums. First, I'm loving Cougar Town almost as much as Slezak is -- Courteney Cox is great in it, and totally not Monica, which is both good (the show needs it) and bad (I loved Monica). Second, Lisa Kudrow sang "Smelly Cat" at...

Friends Star LeBlanc Heads Back To Small Screen
Matt LeBlanc in Joey (2004)
Former Friends star Matt LeBlanc is hoping to make TV audiences laugh again with a new comedy - three years after the actor's spin-off series flopped.

LeBlanc will play himself in Episodes - a comedy about the television industry.

The show will follow a husband-and-wife producing team whose hit comedy on British TV is turned into a dumbed-down American sitcom starring the actor.

LeBlanc made Friends fans laugh as Joey Tribbiani for a decade, but failed to find success with his spin-off series Joey, which was cancelled in 2006 after two seasons.

Episodes will begin shooting in London and Hollywood this winter. The programme is set for a 2010 debut on America's Showtime network and the U.K.'s BBC Two.

Remember Joey? Matt LeBlanc is Coming Back to TV
Have you missed Joey Tribiani from "Friends?" Well, whether or not you have, Matt LeBlanc, the man who brought you Joey, is headed back to television. LeBlanc will be starring in a new Showtime series entitled "Episodes." "Episodes" follows the creation of a stupid American sitcom that is based on a British couple's popular comedy show. And you guessed it, LeBlanc plays the star on the American version of the show.So basically, a guy who made a career out of playing the guy who loves sports, eating, and sleeping with a lot of women has been cast as the guy who plays the guy who loves all the things we just mentioned. In other words, Matt Le ...

'Friends' Actor Matt LeBlanc to Play Himself in 'Episodes'
After his comedy series "Joey" was canceled by NBC in May 2006, Matt LeBlanc is going to star on new TV series. The actor, whose name is famous through his portrayal of Joey Tribbiani in hit NBC show "Friends", has signed a deal to appear in new Showtime sitcom entitled "Episodes".

Matt is set to star as himself in the single-camera comedy series about a British couple, whose hit U.K. show is turned into a dumbed-down American sitcom. The actor recently commented on his involvement in the project, saying "I love it. And I am so glad I got the part-seeing someone else play Matt LeBlanc would have been devastating."

In "Episodes", "Friends" creator David Crane and "Mad About You" producer Jeffrey Klarik, who have teamed up in sitcom "The Class", will work together once again. Talking about the creators of the upcoming show, Matt LeBlanc stated, "Jeffrey and David...

'Friends' Star Matt LeBlanc Going to Showtime for New Comedy
Five years after he ended his successful run as Joey on "Friends" and three years after the spin-off, "Joey", was canceled, Matt LeBlanc gets a job in a new sitcom. Showtime in partnership with BBC 2 present a new comedy titled "Episodes" which will put LeBlanc as an actor of a dumbed-down TV show.

The show however won't only revolve around LeBlanc's character. The main idea is about a British couple whose TV show is turned into a dumb American sitcom when the format rights are sold in the U.S. "We jumped at the chance to get involved with this cock-eyed look at network television told through the eyes of unsuspecting British producers who don't know what hit them when they enter the lion's den of Hollywood," Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt said.

Responsible for making the single-camera show alive are co-creator of "Friends", David Crane, and "Mad About You" producer,...

Matt LeBlanc found, will star in new Showtime comedy
A lot of people have wondered what happened to Matt LeBlanc. After Joey died, he seemed to fall off the face of the Earth. Even Friends cast members who aren't in the public eye a lot (like David Schwimmer) have been keeping busy and you often hear about them being in a movie or performing on stage. But no one really knew what LeBlanc. was up to (besides wondering about a Friends reunion movie).

Now we know. LeBlanc has signed on to star in a new comedy for Showtime titled Episodes. It will be one of those behind-the-scenes looks at a television show and will be produced by Friends co-creator David Crane and Mad About You producer Jeffrey Klarik.Continue reading Matt LeBlanc found, will star in new Showtime comedy

'Friends' star Matt LeBlanc to spoof self on Showtime series 'Episodes'
Matt LeBlanc has been little seen since his ill-conceived "Friends" spinoff "Joey" crashed and burned three years ago. While that show sputtered out after two seasons on NBC, it's failure should not take away from the enormous success LeBlanc enjoyed with "Friends." And no doubt he hopes to recapture some of that magic with his newly announced series "Episodes,"  a co-production between Showtime and the BBC set to air next year. This showcase for LeBlanc is being shepherded by two sitcom veterans -- "Friends" co-creator David Crane and "Mad About You" producer Jeffrey Klarik. The single-camera comedy will follow the misadventures of an English couple whose urbane Britcom is dumbed down for American audiences with the casting of LeBlanc, who will play an exaggerated version of himself. Breaking: Showtime and BBC Pact on Matt LeBlanc Comedy Series "Episodes"
Penance for Joey perhaps? Showtime and BBC Two have joined together to co-produce new comedy series Episodes, set to star Matt LeBlanc (Friends). Can this possibly be true? As one of the Friends series biggest fans, the news that the gang will re-unite to make a movie of the hit sitcom is terrific!

Studio bosses have already got together to prepare a script for a film version of the series according to News of the World and are ready to break the bank in order to get the main cast on board. James Michael Tyler, who played “Gunther” in the series confirmed to the News of the World:

Friends: The Movie, is definitely on. I still keep in touch with a lot of the cast and they say that they are really keen.

This would mean Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer following in the footsteps of the fantastic success of the Sex And The City movie, and all back together for the first time in 5 years.

Rob Stefaniuk’s Suck and Sook-Yin Lee’s Year Of The Carnivore Reviews - Tiff ‘09
Two Canadian indies. Two “Kids in the Hall” alums. Two vastly different genres. Stateside, we all know about the crazy worlds of David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan, and the maple leaf filmmakers who make inventive footprints in the world of film. But behind them is a world of indie filmmakers who do a whole lot with very little. We’ve already covered Reginald Harkema’s “Leslie, My Name is Evil,” and now we give you Rob Stefaniuk’s “Suck” and Sook-Yin Lee’s “Year of the Carnivore.” Click through to get a taste of rock ‘n’ roll vampires and sexual, coming-of-age laughs.

Suck

Sometimes bad films are just too good. They know that they’re not paragons of cinema. They know they don’t have the money, resources, or story to hit it big, and they just have fun with, and make the most of, what they’ve got. Take “Suck...

'Shootin' The S--t With Kevin Smith': An Exclusive Excerpt
Kevin Smith is a funny guy. He'd probably use a more... "colorful" word than "guy," one starting with 'mother' and ending with a term I won't repeat here (it starts with 'f'), but that's all part of his charm. He's a talented filmmaker to be sure -- just look at modern classics like "Clerks" and "Dogma" -- but he's also a fantastically well-spoken and engaging individual.

That's why you should be excited about Titan Books' "Shootin' the S--t With Kevin Smith: The Best of SModcast," which hits store shelves on September 22. As in tomorrow. It's filled transcribed conversations between Smith and his View Askew partner and longtime collaborator Scott Mosier. Hit the jump for a brief excerpt of the hilarity. And stay tuned for MTV.com next week, as Smith will be here in the office to answer some questions!

Vampire Movie 'Suck' Features Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Moby
Rock-and-roll comedy, co-starring Malcolm McDowell, to premiere at Toronto Film Festival.

By Gil Kaufman

Think of it as "Twilight" meets "True Blood" with a dash of "Rock Star." Rock-and-roll vampire spoof "Suck" is slated to debut at next month's Toronto Film Festival with an all-star cast of actual rockers that includes former Black Flag vocalist and notorious ranter Henry Rollins as radio DJ Rockin' Roger, punk icon Iggy Pop as retired rocker/producer Victor, original shock-rocker Alice Cooper as a creepy bartender and noted vegan Moby as Beef Bellows, lead singer of the bloody metal act Secretaries of Steak.

The movie follows a group of wannabe rockers called the Winners, who are, as you might suspect, kind of losers. After playing a mind-numbing series of lame gigs on their endless road trip, the group is suddenly transformed when bassist Jennifer (Jessica Pare) hooks up...

Tiff 09: Moby, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, And More In The Trailer For Rob Stefaniuk’s Suck!
Seemingly doomed to roadtrip doldrums and dives, the band The Winners break their slump when their female bass player disappears one night with a studly, stylin’ vampire. She returns charged with sexual charisma that creates audience frenzy and eventually ensnares the rest of the band. Their “hook” launches them to fame. But fame turns out to be a different kind of Hell than AC/DC promised.

Following an “incident” on a national radio show with “Rockn’ Roger” The Winners hit mega-stardom beyond their wildest dreams. But Joey is haunted by an eerie bartender with a dark secret. And legendary vampire hunter, Eddie Van Helsing, is on their tail tracking them down despite his fear of the dark. But when a veteran music producer calls them on becoming a vampire freak show, their rock’n’roll bubble bursts.

How’s this for a cast on your basic rock and roll vampire comedy: Iggy Pop.

Rock And Roll Icons And Rock And Roll Vampires In Rob Stefaniuk’s Suck!
Oh, Rob, you take a mighty big risk giving your sophomore film a title like Suck. Either you are supremely confident or supremely foolish ... and my money is on confident.

Canada’s Rob Stefaniuk earned himself a small but dedicated cult with his debut scifi comedy - Phil The Alien - a cult which he now looks ready to expand upon with his sophomore film Suck, a vampire comedy slated to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. And it’s not just any rock and roll comedy, either ... no, this one boasts songs written by Stefaniuk himself, a soundtrack by John Kastner from The Asexuals and The Doughboys - who you probably don’t know but are very, very good nonetheless - and cameo appearances by Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Carol Pope, Henry Rollins and Moby along with the likes of Malcolm McDowell. Stunt casting? Hell,...

Webcam: Jay Harrington on being 'Better Off Ted'
Midseason replacement "Better Off Ted" earned some enviable reviews with Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly calling the show "the most original sitcom to come along in a while." Jay Harrington ("Desperate Housewives") stars as a cog in the corporate machine with Portia de Rossi ("Arrested Development") as an office rival and Andrea Anders ("Joey") as a potential romantic interest. The ABC single-camera comedy aired only seven episodes but is slated to return in the fall.

Reviewing the first episode, Matthew Gilbert of the Boston Globe said, "'Better off Ted' is loaded with potential. The writing has some of the gonzo wit that fuels the General Electric sendups on '30 Rock.' And there are glimmers of the cubicle-culture surrealism that has flourished on 'The Office' and on one of Victor Fresco's earlier series, the excellent 'Andy Richter Controls the Universe.'" For Robert Bianco of USA Today, "Amusing lines fly back and forth,...

Casting Call: We Pick The Cast For John Stamos’ ‘Full House’ Movie
Both “Arrested Development” and “The Jetsons” have big screen adaptations in development, so it may not be so crazy that John Stamos envisions a remake of his classic TV sitcom “Full House” in theaters. The man who was — and for some, always will be — Uncle Jesse already knows what he wants.

“I’m working on a movie idea, but it wouldn’t be us playing us,” Stamos told the New York Daily News. “I see Steve Carell as [Bob Saget's] Danny Tanner and Tracy Morgan as [Dave Coulier's] Joey Gladstone because he’s funny.”

Carell and Morgan are both fine choices, no question. However, as someone who grew up in the Tanner family’s San Francisco living room, I have a few picks of my own in mind who could capably revive “Full House” for an entirely new generation.

Jason Bateman as Danny Tanner

As far as I’m concerned, Bateman’s role as...

John Stamos Cooking Up Plans For "Full House" Feature Film
Former "Full House" -mate John Stamos may be resurrecting his beloved series for movie audiences. The 45-year-old actor, who played the role the loveable live-in musician Uncle Jesse, is currently cobbling together a movie version of the 1987-1995 series.

"I'm working on a movie idea, but it wouldn't be us playing us," he told The New York TImes. "I'm not 100% sure, but it would probably take place in the first few years" of the hit series. He mentioned James Franco as a natural heir to play Uncle Jesse, a character with thick roots of the both Greek and hair kind.

Stamos played the endearing basement-dweller Jesse Katsopolis during the sitcom's eight season run. Known affectionately as Uncle Jesse, his side plot focused on his greased-up mop of hair, unrequited dream for rock band stardom and the on-screen family he started with wife Rebecca (Lori Loughlin).

The former "ER" doc dropped...

'Full House' Movie Dream Casting
Thought the well of good original movie ideas had run dry? Think again. John Stamos tells the New York Daily News that he's conceptualizing a movie based on the '80s/'90s sitcom 'Full House' that wouldn't star the original cast. "I'm working on a movie idea, but it wouldn't be us playing us," Stamos revealed. "I'm not 100% sure, but it would probably take place in the first few years [covered in the series, which ran from 1987-95]."

Ok, so this doesn't exactly qualify as an "original" idea -- and whether it's a "good" one is, at the very least, suspect -- but it did get us thinking. Say some movie studio does have cojones gargantuan enough to greenlight an Olsen-twins-and-Stamos-free 'Full House' movie: Who would we want to see play Uncle Jesse, Danny, Joey, DJ and the gang? Stamos already has his picks -- he wants James Franco to step into Jesse's shoes,...

Stamos Eyes Full House Feature
Mary-Kate Olsen, John Stamos, Andrea Barber, Candace Cameron Bure, Dave Coulier, Lori Loughlin, Bob Saget, Jodie Sweetin, Blake Tuomy-Wilhoit, Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit, and Scott Weinger in La fête à la maison (1987)
Former Full House star John Stamos is putting together an all-star cast to take the hit U.S. family sitcom to the big screen in a new feature film.

Stamos rose to fame as 'Uncle' Jesse Katsopolis in the series, which ran from 1987 to 1995 and starred twin media moguls Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and actors Bob Saget, Dave Coulier, Jodie Sweetin, and Candace Cameron Bure.

He tells the New York Daily News, "I'm working on a movie idea, but it wouldn't be us playing us. I'm not 100 per cent sure, but it would probably take place in the first few years. I see Steve Carell as (Bob Saget's character) Danny Tanner and Tracy Morgan as (Dave Coulier's character) Joey Gladstone because he's funny."

But the actor has dashed hopes of fans desperate to see the original cast reunited on the small screen.

He adds, "I don't see it happening anytime soon. We're all very close. I saw Ashley a couple weeks ago. Bob and Dave I see a lot."...

TV Review: ‘Better Off Ted’ Could Be Worse But Far From Best
Television Rating: 2.5/5.0 Chicago – In a landscape of increasingly lower ratings for quirky TV comedy (talk to the producers of “Scrubs” if you don’t believe me), I’m kind of amazed that “Better Off Ted” made it to the air. If “Arrested Development” and everything Andy Richter has ever tried couldn’t find an audience, who thought people would be attracted to this left-of-center workplace sitcom? And the fact that it doesn’t live up to the potential of its concept means the show’s thin chance of survival just disappeared.

Jay Harrington plays the “title character” of one of the most poorly-named shows in the history of television, Ted, a worker in research and development at a massive conglomerate named Veridian. Ted works with the vicious Veronica (Portia de Rossi), sweet love interest Linda (Andrea Anders), and scientist scene-stealers Phil (Jonathan Slavin) and Lem (Malcolm Barrett). Like Jason Bateman on “Ad,...

Ask the Flying Monkey! (February 17, 2009)
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country)

Q: I've been feeling Lost a lot lately, mostly because I'm completely enamored with one of their new characters, Daniel Faraday, played by a very unique actor, Jeremy Davies. Can you tell me anything gay about Jeremy Davies? Anything at all? - Lindsey, New York

A: Hmmm, well, I can tell you that Davies, who first made a splash in the terrific indie hit Spanking the Monkey (1994), has made a name for himself playing nervous losers and misfits, in movies such as Secretary (2002), Solaris (2002), The Locusts (1997), and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Some of these characters could, in a certain light, from a certain angle, by certain people, be read as “maybe, possibly gay.”

Davies also played a drama student in HBO’s TV production of The Laramie Project, about the murder of Matthew Shepard,...

Friends: Kudrow and Aniston Return to Central Perk and Talk Reunion
Five years ago, NBC and television viewers said goodbye to Friends after 10 seasons and 236 episodes. Before the TV show's last episode even aired, rumors began swirling about possible reunions. While the public would generally like to see one, the Friends cast haven't exactly expressed excitement about returning to Central Perk.

The ladies and gents seem to be pretty divided on their willingness to revive their sitcom characters. David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry, and Matt LeBlanc haven't expressed any interest while Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox Arquette and Jennifer Aniston are open to doing one if the venue and script feels right.

David Schwimmer has said outright that he doesn't have interest in doing a Friends reunion. Matthew Perry thinks it's unlikely to happen any time soon, no sooner than 10 or 20 years. Matt LeBlanc's Joey spin-off was skewered by critics and was cancelled after two seasons. He now concentrates on his own production company,...
