The Curse of Downers Grove | Review
Teenage Wasteland: Ellis & Martini Join Forces for Derivative Teen Angst

Check your expectations at the opening credits with The Curse of Downers Grove, a muddled teen scream mix of urban legend meets self-fulfilling prophecy metaphor. Many will be unable to bypass taking a look, however, upon learning the schlocky titled genre effort was penned by Bret Easton Ellis, his first cinematic project following the infamous and ultimately ill-fated Paul Schrader/Lindsey Lohan experiment The Canyons (2013). An ambitious thread of something greater sometimes resonates in this adolescent angst tale spiked with violence and a smattering of watered down sexuality (at least compared to what we know Ellis can imagine), but is ultimately lost in the tonally awkward jumps between genre elements and out-of-touch flourishes as concerns law-enforcement and teenagers.

The eponymous suburb of Chicago is the home of a deadly curse, or at least that’s the urban legend of the...

Watch: Trailer For Bret Easton Ellis’ Penned Teen Horror ‘The Curse of Downers Grove’ With Bella Heathcote
"The Curse of Downers Grove" is an interesting twist in the career of young indie filmmaker Derick Martini. He came to acclaim with the family drama "Lymelife" with Alec Baldwin, Rory Culkin, and Emma Roberts. Martin Scorsese liked it so much he served as an executive producer. His follow-up “Hick,” with Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively and Eddie Redmayne -- a pretty notable cast -- ended up on many of year-end worst lists in 2011. Now Martini’s back with the teen horror “The Curse of Downers Grove.” Written by Bret Easton Ellis, the movie stars Bella Heathcote (“Dark Shadows”), “X-Men” actor Lucas Till, Kevin Zegers, Penelope Mitchell, Zane Holtz, Helen Slater, and Tom Arnold. Here’s the official synopsis: The town of Downers Grove looks like your average suburban neighborhood —but Downers Grove has a disturbing secret.... For the past eight years, one senior from every high school graduating class has...

Obsession and Desperation Fuel Gabriel [Trailer]
Rory Culkin is not some fresh face who has yet to leave a mark. The young actor has been delivering excellent performances in good movies for years (recommendations include: Igby Goes Down, Down in the Valley, Lymelife) but he has yet to catch the eye of mainstream audiences and though Gabriel is not exactly the next summer tentpole, the movie is riding a wave of praise from Sundance and Tribeca which should get him on a few more radars.

Writer/director Lou Howe's feature film debut looks like an intense thriller. Culkin stars as the titular character, a mentally unstable young man who is determined to track down his first love, played here by Emily Meade, at any cost. And it looks like he pays dearly.

Gabriel opens June 19.

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions List: An Introduction
Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.

Twenty years ago, Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb claimed the Grand Jury Prize Documentary award, Living in Oblivion‘s Tom Dicillo was honored with the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and Edward Burns’ micro-budgeted The Brothers McMullen (there is a read-worthy, lively, eleventh hour account on how it was submitted to the fest in Ted Hope’s “Hope...

Review: Electrick Children
Pregnant by music? This is the premise of Rebecca Thomas’ unusual first feature, Electrick Children that sees a return to indie for Rory Culkin (Lymelife) and bravely casts newcomer, Julia Garner, as its lead.

A prayer for 15 year-old Rachel opens the film, easing us into the devoutly religious Mormon colony the protagonist comes from. In this Utah-based community, all ecclesiastical interviews of ages 15 years and up must be tape recorded, according to official procedure. As Rachel is asked if she lives "by the law of chastity," her attention is drawn to Mr Will’s new high-tech tape recorder.

Fascinated by this piece of machinery, she steals downstairs in the night to listen to the tape of her voice and discovers a music cassette with a recording of The Nerves' 'Hanging On The Telephone'. The song seems to speak to Rachel and she believes she has “experienced a miracle - an...

[Now Streaming] Your ‘Dark Shadows,’ ‘God Bless America,’ and ‘Hick’ Alternatives
Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to worthwhile titles currently available on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we offer alternatives to Dark Shadows, God Bless America and Hick.

Tim Burton brings the peculiar tale of the Collins clan to the big screen. Johnny Depp stars as Barnabas Collins, a long-imprisoned vampire unleashed on the 1970s, where he discovers a colorful batch of dysfunctional descendants. Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter co-star.

Prefer camp with your macabre?

Dark Shadows (1966) Check out the cult classic that started it all. Originally conceived as a moody melodrama, this groundbreaking gothic soap found success following the introduction of tormented vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid). From there the Collins family regularly crosses the paths of ghosts, werewolves, and witches. Oh my.

Edward Scissorhands (1990) Or revisit Burton and Depp’s first collaboration, the tale of a modern Frankenstein’s monster with scissors for hands.

Review: Chloe Moretz Is Trapped In The Unclean, Clammy Coming-Of-Age Indie 'Hick'
Later, there will be a brief discussion of how literature is not film, and how some actions and themes do not survive translation from the page to the big screen because our mind can better deal with envisioning them than it can with actually seeing them. Before that though, I feel I have to pause and note that "Hick," adapting Andrea Portes' novel for the screen under the direction of Derick Martini ("Smiling Fish and Goat on Fire," "Lymelife"), is one of the most unclean and clammy films I've ever had to endure at a film festival. Not because it was incompetent and not because it deals with violent and sexual material but, rather, because it is both incompetent in general and even more incompetent specifically when it is concerned with violent and sexual material. We're supposed to be watching the cross-country adventures of 13-year-old Luli (Chloe Moretz, who...

New Images Of Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne & More In 'Hick'
Not really feeling "Dark Shadows" or "The Avengers" at the multiplex next weekend? Feel like staying home instead and not dealing with hassle, hustle and bustle of a busy weekend audience? Well, you'll have an option on VOD with "Hick" (which is also opening in limited release as well) and a few more images have arrived to give you a sneak peek at what you're going to get.

The film from "Lymelife" director Derick Martini is based on the Andrea Portes' novel, the film follows Luli (Chloe Grace Moretz), a 13-year-old Nebraskan girl, and her hard-going life on the road after she runs away from her neglectful parents and home. She’s taken in by Glenda (Balke Lively), a hard-living grifter who takes Luli under her wing. The hard-to-tell apart red and green band trailers have pointed to a very white trash tone, though it remains to be seen...

3 New Photos From 'Hick' Starring Blake Lively & Chloë Moretz, Plus The Green Band Trailer For The Film
Well, if you can tell us the major differences between this green band trailer and the (not very) red band version that dropped last week for "Hick," you've got better eyes than we do. We're still not quite sure what made that previous trailer so naughty, but here's a cleaned up version you can watch at work along with a few new stills from the flick.

Starring Blake Lively, Chloe Moretz, Eddie Redmayne and a whole lot of accents, this wild story revolves around Luli (Moretz), a 13-year-old Nebraskan girl, and her hard-going life on the road after she runs away from her neglectful parents and home. She’s taken in by Glenda (Lively), a hard-living grifter who takes Luli under her wing. Derick Martini (”Lymelife”) directs the adaptation of Andrea Portes novel and the result is something certainly....pulpy....though the tone seems to be a bit all over...

Chloe Gets Her Gun: Red Band Trailer for Hick Arrives
Chloe Moretz has signed up to seven films in the next couple of years including the new adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie and while she has been a strong part of many ensemble casts we’re starting to see her emerge as a leading actress.

We’ll see her next in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows but there’s an altogether darker tone to another film she has coming out this year, Derick Martini’s Hick. I enjoyed Martini’s 2008 ensemble drama Lymelife but here we see the director hanging his story of a troubled teen who wanders away from her dysfunctional life in the vague direction of Las Vegas on Moretz, and this first look trailer suggests that she’s more than up to the task.

Eddie Redmayne and Blake Lively make up two of the people she meets on her journey and nothing we see here suggests...

‘Hick’ Red Band Trailer Gives Us an In-Over-Her-Head Chloe Moretz
After taking the festival circuit by storm with his 2008 film, Lymelife, director Derick Martini became something of an indie darling. Now he’s back with his latest film, Hick, which tells the tale of a confused young girl running away from her deadbeat parents and learning about life on the road. The main attraction here is that said young girl is being played by Chloe Moretz, an actress who’s shown great potential up to this point, and is just chomping at the bit to get a meaty role to sink her teeth into, so she can really show what she can do. Whether or not Hick is the right platform for her will be a matter of opinion, but, as you can see from its new trailer, the film contains enough dark, dramatic material to give her range a showcase, no matter how you positively or negatively you respond to the absurd and traumatizing things you...

Watch: Chloe Moretz and Blake Lively in Red Band Trailer for 'Hick'
After directing the quirky, funny festival favorite Lymelife, director Derick Martini is back with a completely different kind of film. The adaptation of Andrea Portes' novel Hick follows a 13-year-old Nebraska girl (Chloe Moretz), who gets more than she bargained for when she runs away to Las Vegas and finds herself under the tutelage of Glenda (Blake Lively), a hard-living grifter who takes the young girl under her wing. Now the first red band trailer gives us a taste of the gritty, edgy drama, but it's still fairly tame with the only real controversial material being the focus on a 13-year old girl being risque and violent. Watch below! Here's the red band trailer for Derick Martini's adaptation of Hick from Yahoo! Movies: Derick Martini (Lymelife) directs this adaptation of Hick adapted by Andrea Portes, author of the novel on which the film is based. The story follows...

Red Band Trailer For ‘Hick’ With Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively and Alec Baldwin
After having success with the drama Lymelife, I was looking forward to the latest film from Derick Martini. Unfortunately Hick had a rough premiere at Tiff, with response firmly on the negative side. Although the ensemble of up and comers Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively and Eddie Redmayne is promising, one can glean some of the possible problems, as we have our first red band trailer from Yahoo. It looks almost to frenetic, as to cover up what’s a fairly generic storyline pushing to be a gritty as possible. I like our main cast, also including Alec Baldwin, Juliette Lewis and Rory Culkin, so curiosity may get the best of me, but for now check out the trailer below.

Synopsis:

Foreseeing a hopeless future in barrooms and parking lots, cagey 13-year-old Luli McMullen bolts headlong from the heartland, aiming at Las Vegas, where she expects to find herself a sugar daddy.

Watch: Blake Lively & Chloë Moretz Go White Trash In Red Band Trailer For 'Hick'
Well, we will say this. You ain't seen Blake Lively or Chloë Moretz -- or hell, most of the other cast really -- in anything like this before. Whether it all works or not is entirely a different matter, but the red band trailer for "Hick" is sure to grab your attention.

Soundtracked to some relentlessly twangy guitar with words like Brutal, Emotional and Controversial splashing across the screen, Phase 4 Films really want to push that this is one gritty tale. And on paper at least, it is. Directed by Derick Martini (”Lymelife”), the film is an adaptation of Andrea Portes’ coming-of-age novel of the same name (she penned the script as well). The story revolves around Luli (Moretz), a 13-year-old Nebraskan girl, and her hard-going life on the road after she runs away from her neglectful parents and home. Poster & New Pics Of Blake Lively, Chloe Moretz & Eddie Redmayne In 'Hick'
While reviews out of Tiff weren't great -- we called it "a black blot of shame for everyone who had a part in its making" -- "Hick" still remains a curiosity because it offers up a grittier side we've rarely seen from the cast led by Blake Lively, Chloe Moretz and Eddie Redmayne.

Directed by Derick Martini (”Lymelife”), the film is an adaptation of Andrea Portes’ coming-of-age novel of the same name (she penned the script as well). 'Welcome To People' Lands On June 29th; 'Hick' Hits VOD & Theaters In May & 'For A Good Time Call' Dials Up On September 14th
Get out your marker and dry erase board of upcoming movies, because you'll have to add a few more dates to the calendar.

First up, despite Vulture's suggestion that Disney was trying to offload the DreamWorks drama (they have a distribution arrangement), "Welcome To People," from tentpole writers and producers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, it is now slated with a June 29th release date. The film stars Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Jon Favreau, Mark Duplass and Michelle Pffeifer and tells the story a twenty-something business man who, after the death of his father, must deliver $150,000 in cash to the alcoholic sister he didn’t know he had, and her son, a 12-year-old with major anger management issues. So yeah, definitely counter-programming in the midst of the summer. No word yet on the exact release plans (limited or wide) but we presume this means a trailer and more is just around the corner.

Emma Roberts and Craig Roberts to Star in 'I Am My Family Secret'
Both of the young talents have films at Sundance, and while they also share a surname, Craig Roberts (Submarine) and Emma Roberts (Scream 4) are not really related in any other capacity. However, soon they will have a singular film in common as Deadline reports both the stars have joined I Am My Family Secret, the next film from director Derick Martini (Lymelife). The story follows two wildly different brothers who learn that their parents have been hiding an Earth-shattering, life-altering secret from them for over 20 years of their life. It's not clear what roles the male and female Roberts' will be playing though. Both of the young stars are at different points in their career with Emma having much bigger roles recently and Craig just coming on the scene with a phenomenal performance in Submarine. They each make a decent splash at Sundance this year in smaller roles with...

Emma Roberts & 'Submarine' Star Craig Roberts To Star In 'I Am My Family Secret'
She’s from New York City, the niece of one of the world’s most recognizable actresses, and has been on the big screen since she was ten years old. He’s from (the considerably less glamorous) Maesycwmmer, Wales, and made his feature film debut as recently as 2010. So, on the surface, Emma Roberts and Craig Roberts appear to have little more in common than merely sharing a surname...and before you ask, no, they’re definitely not related. But aside from the fact that they were born within a few weeks of each other -- Craig turned 21 earlier this week, and Emma will do so on February 10th -- the pair also both garnered critical acclaim for strong coming-of-age performances in a pair of 70s/80s set comedy dramas. Craig Roberts’ quirky and impressive turn came in Richard Ayoade’s "Submarine," while Emma’s (arguably career-best) role in Derick Martini...

Lymelife (2008)
For a while now, Lymelife director Derick Martini has been developing an untitled drama that once went under the name I Am My Family Secret. Well, now the name seems to be back in place (at least for the moment) and Martini has also found the first two pieces of casting for the film, with Emma Roberts and Craig Roberts signing on.Secret focuses on two brothers who are very different. They realise it might have something to do with a shocking, life-altering mystery that their parents have been hiding from them for more than 20 years. There are no other plot details beyond that, though we wonder if this means that one of the siblings is an alien! Ooh… or that their parents are really figments of their imagination? Time to stop guessing, we fear. And in case anyone was wondering, no, the two stars are not directly related. Emma,...

Emma Roberts & Craig Roberts Investigate a 'Family Secret'
We don't want to get too "Who Do You Think you Are?" on y'all, but according to Deadline, Emma Roberts and "Submarine's" Craig Roberts have both just signed on to the upcoming drama "I Am My Family Secret."

Coincidence?!

Okay, actually, it is a coincidence, because as far as anybody knows, the two young stars aren't actually related (sorry, Hollywood genealogy buffs). But now they're going to be linked in a professional sense at least, as Emma Roberts reunites with her "Lymelife" director Derick Martini for what is described as a film about "two brothers, wildly different, who discover their parents have been hiding a startling and life-altering secret from them for over two decades."

Of course, we're pretty sure Emma won't be playing one of those brothers, but we have the perfect idea for who should play the parents: Julia Roberts and Eric Roberts.

Hey, if you've got a good theme going,...

Craig and Emma Roberts to Lead ‘I Am My Family’s Secret’
They probably haven’t reached “stardom” just yet, but I’d argue that 2011 was really the breakout year for Craig and Emma Roberts (no relation), where, just a few months apart from one another, the former led Submarine and the latter had a major role in Scream 4. Now, in 2012, Deadline reports that the two of them will be coming together for I Am My Family’s Secret, the new film from Derick Martini — who, in addition to Tiff 2011 entry Hick, wrote and directed Lymelife, a film that starred (the female) Roberts.

Written by Martini, Secret centers on “two brothers, wildly different, who discover their parents have been hiding a startling and life-altering secret from them for over two decades.” Okay, so, how is the secret not going to be the existence of an Emma Roberts-portrayed sister? (Unless they have her play a boy, who is then revealed to have been born a girl.

DVD Review: The Art of Getting By
The Art Of Getting By

Stars: Freddie Highmore, Emma Roberts, Michael Angarano, Alicia Silverstone | Written and directed by Gavin Wiesen

If you’re a fan of a genre, you can forgive an awful lot of a film’s shortcomings. Personally, despite being old enough to know better, I really like coming of age dramas (The Ice Storm, Adventureland, Almost Famous, etc). As such, I was predisposed to get a kick out of The Art of Getting By. The question is, will those not enamoured with tales of teenage boys learning about life and love enjoy it as much?

Freddie Highmore – a veteran of kid films such asSpiderwick Chronicles, Astro Boy, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and others – stars as George, a teen so nihilistic he sees no point in doing any work at his school, despite his intelligence and talent for art, much to the frustration of his teachers. After...

Emma Roberts Reportedly Bails On Harmony Korine's 'Spring Breakers'
Considering she's the Nickelodeon-series leading scion of Hollywood royalty, the daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts has been laudable in her desire to mix it up a bit. Of course, there were the early teen vehicles, like "Aquamarine," "Wild Child" and "Hotel For Dogs," but she's also mixed up her Hollywood fare like "Scream 4" with theoretically more interesting indie films, like "Lymelife," "It's Kind of a Funny Story" and "The Art of Getting By." We can't say we've been huge fans of any of them, but it at least shows a desire to be something other than America's next sweetheart.  Sadly, it looks like the actress' most interesting prospective project won't be coming to pass. Eyebrows were raised last year when it was announced that the 20-year-old actress was set to star alongside James Franco and fellow tween idols Vanessa Hudgens and Selena...

Selena Gomez Talks 'Raw' New Role
Harmony Korine in Spring Breakers (2012)
Is Selena Gomez the next Disney star to shed her family-friend image?

The 19-year-old star of "Wizards of Waverly Place" is taking on director, Harmony Korine's, latest project, "Spring Breakers."

It won't be zany antics and fun in the sun for Gomez, who stars alongside James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens and Emma Roberts, as the film revolves around a group of broke college girls who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break trip, and a drug and arms dealer they find themselves entangled with.

It's a far cry from "Princess Protection Program," but Gomez tells MTV News she's really excited to start filming the movie and beginning the next chapter in her career.

"It's a different character than I have ever played before. It's a different kind of vibe I think than people are used to seeing in me," she said. "What you're going to see is more raw,...

Tiff '11 Review: Chloe Moretz Is Trapped In The Unclean, Clammy Coming-Of-Age Indie 'Hick'
Later, there will be a brief discussion of how literature is not film and how some actions and themes do not survive translation from the page to the big screen because our mind can better deal with envisioning them than it can with actually seeing them Before that, though I feel I have to pause and note that "Hick," adapting Andrea Portes' novel for the screen under the direction of Derick Martini ("Smiling Fish and Goat on Fire," "Lymelife"), is one of the most unclean and clammy films I've ever had to endure at a film festival. Not because it…...

New Clips From Tiff-Bound Duo Of Derick Martini's 'Hick' & Marc Forster's 'Machine Gun Preacher'
On the eve of the Toronto International Film Festival, clips have now been unveiled for two of the premiering films hoping to make an impact: Derick Martini's adaptation of Andrea Portes’ coming-of-age novel "Hick" and Marc Forster's take on the real-life story of a criminal-turned-do-gooder "Machine Gun Preacher." Martini returns to the fest after 2008's "Lymelife" with his star-studded film featuring Blake Lively, Chloe Moretz and Eddie Redmayne alongside Alec Baldwin, Juliette Lewis and Rory Culkin. The story follows a 13-year-old Nebraskan girl named Luli (Moretz), and her rough-going life on the road after she runs away from her neglectful…...

Blake Lively & Chloe Moretz Pair Up For 'Hick' In First Official Look
Eager to put the teen soap "Gossip Girl" behind her, Blake Lively has been making strong turns in feature films like "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee," last year's "The Town" (and less notably, this year's "Green Lantern"). The actress is set to make a return trip to Toronto this year for the indie drama "Hick" and it should be another shift for the actress for those who mostly know her as Serena van der Woodsen. Directed by Derick Martini (”Lymelife”), the film is an adaptation of Andrea Portes’ coming-of-age novel of the same name (she penned the script as…...

Yep, That's Steven Spielberg's Daughter in 'Art of Getting By'
As George, Freddie Highmore has a lot of help coming of age in "The Art of Getting By," and one of his guides into the wide world of moneyed NYC teens is a hard-partying high schooler named Zoe Rubenstein.

"I have lots of slutty friends I could hook you up with," she tells the gloomy young guy lurking at her parent-free party in an amazing Manhattan apartment. Poor George doesn't know what hit him, but he's soon going to find out.

Don't be fooled by the bad-girl persona, though; Zoe's played by Sasha Spielberg, the daughter of E.T.'s daddy Steven. We're sure that he and mom Kate Capshaw won't stand for any shenanigans, even from an up-and-coming starlet like Sasha. Sasha appeared in Vanity Fair magazine's "Growing Up Hollywood" feature in 2009 alongside other celebrity progeny, and has been linked to Max Winkler, son of "Happy Days" legend Henry and...
