The Box is opening in another territory after TF1 snapped up the competition reality show. The French broadcaster becomes the latest buyer of the Norwegian format, which sees celebs exit a yellow box to face an unknown challenge.

It is hard for new formats to break through, but sometimes a show comes along and grabs international attention, which has been the case with The Box.

The show was created by Norwegian producer Seefood. In an unusual move, it is selling the show itself rather than handing it off to one of the major format distributors. The sales strategy has proved successful, with a flurry of deals for the format. Seefood has closed ten deals for the show, including with ITV in the UK.

Hulu has revealed first look photos of Control Freak, a new horror movie featuring Star Wars franchise star Kelly Marie Tran. A release date for the film has also been announced.

Per Hulu,Control Freak will start streaming exclusively on Hulu on March 13, 2025. From WorthenBrooks and Hulu Originals, the movie will be made available on Disney+ internationally on a later date yet to be determined. The feature film was spawned from the short film Control featured in the second season of Hulu's Bite Size Halloween event in 2021. Shal Ngo, the writer and director of the original short, returned to write and direct Control Freak as well. The filmmaker's previous work includes The Park, The Box, and The Last Fisherman.

In writer-director Hailey Gates’ directorial debut Atropia, she dives into the Bush-era culture of toxic masculinity, nationalism and Islamophobia with an amusing and profoundly absurdist sense of satire.

Set in 2006, Atropia takes place at the titular U.S. military training ground in the California desert, where actors role-play as villagers in countries where the government plans to invade. Alia Shawkat stars as Fayruz, an ambitious actress determined to make her big break in Hollywood while working in the simulation, despite her conflicting feelings about the war in Iraq.

Although her parents accuse her of betraying her culture as they disapprove of her preparing soldiers to invade their country, the training ground is the only place casting her type (not a surprise for that era of Hollywood). The fractured relationship with her family represents an all-too-real generational divide for many children of immigrants through a heartfelt, yet cheeky portrayal by Shawkat.

The village is small and dense, lined with crumbling structures and the exploded remains of cars. The women, hanging laundry or selling American movies on DVD out of dusty briefcases, are suspicious. The men are outright paranoid, ducking down alleys or peering out of second-story windows. American troops patrol the area with assault rifles, where IEDs and chemical weapons await them. It’s a hellish war zone, and it’s entirely fake.

This is Atropia, the fictional town named after a very real military training camp in the Nevada desert. It’s the subject of Hailey Gates’ new film of the same name, playing in competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, starring Alia Shawkat and Callum Turner

“Growing up in L.A., there was a lot of lore about these places. You could see them from the freeway,” Gates told Variety on the eve of the premiere of her feature directing debut.

Exclusive: Norway’s latest format obsession, The Box, is getting a second season.

Commercial broadcaster TV2 has ordered a second run of the adventure reality format, in which celebrity contestants placed in separate boxes find themselves dumped in the middle of challenges that they know nothing about. Seafood TV will return to produce.

In Norway, the show launched earlier this month, and its first episode has now consolidated to over a million views, according to producers — no mean feat in a country of just over five million people. This makes it the channel’s highest-rated launch of the month, and de facto the year.

In each episode, contestants immediately find themselves in the middle of a challenge when their yellow box opens and must work out what to do, working with the others to achieve the goal. Each ep ends with a pair of contestants engaging in a duel to stay in the game.

New year, new formats for the market.

Seefood TV’s entertainment reality show The Box, a paper format that launched at MIPCOM in Cannes last October, is rolling out on a pair of European countries ahead of its local launch on TV2 in Norway.

Rtl Nederlands and TV2 in Denmark have both commissioned local versions ahead of The Box‘s debut on TV2 on Thursday (January 9). The Danish version will launch later this year, no word on Rtl’s plan yet.

The show has steadily been building a head of steam, as Europe’s TV networks search for the next Traitors or Destination X.

After what could be described as a moderately challenging (or totally disastrous) 2023 for The Walt Disney Company, The (Disney) Empire Strikes Back to reclaim its crown as the King of the Box Office, officially becoming the #1 studio domestically and internationally in 2024, thanks to an astonishing $5.46 billion global box office haul (made up of $2.23 billion domestic and $3.23 billion international) In doing so, Disney has become the first studio to surpass $5 billion worldwide since 2019, which is another sign that box office totals are returning to pre-pandemic norms.

Beyond Fest has announced something that should make fans of 1999’s tragically under-appreciated film Stir of Echoes very happy. There will be a special 25th anniversary screening of the film in Hollywood on Saturday, December 15.

When filmmaker Richard Kelly made his feature directorial debut "Donnie Darko" in 2001, it caused a stir in the arthouse world. "Donnie Darko" quickly accumulated a passionate cult who fell in love with its unbalanced hero (Jake Gyllenhaal) and its twisted time-travel plot. It was a combination psychological horror film and bizarro indie coming-of-age-in-the-1980s tale. Donna Berwick, who worked as a costume designer on Da 5 Bloods, Hemlock Grove and Game of Thrones, has died. She was 66.

Her brother, Stephan Berwick, announced on Facebook that she died Wednesday following a battle with breast cancer.

“Today we lost the coolest, most magnetic, joy of life woman I’ve known, my incomparable older sister, Donna Berwick, to a return of breast cancer. She met the battle with an unrivaled tough cheer that was so ‘Donna’, those who knew her will know what I mean,” he wrote. “Being around her was a lesson in joy. Being close to her was a feeling of acceptance and embrace without judgment. She lived with a fearless celebration of life without boundaries.”

Before starting her career in costuming, Donna earned a Bfa from the School of Visual Arts in New York City as well as an associate’s degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Technology.

But while Jason1 and Amanda were world-hopping around with The Box, they created new versions of themselves every time they stepped through a Corridor door into a new world.

I was kind of inclined to believe that Dark Matter is science fiction, but after watching the penultimate episode, I’ve changed my mind. It is more of a drama about a person who wanted to change his reality. And therefore, he spent a lifetime building a machine to help his cause. Jason2 had a close-to-perfect life, yet he wasn’t a happy man. His biggest regret in life was not marrying Daniela when she got pregnant with his child. He always asked himself: Did he choose the perfect path? Jason1, on the other hand, was a flawed man, but he was content with whatever he had. He loved Daniela and Charlie without any negativity holding him back, and that’s what made his pursuit of happiness perfect. But chuck it; you already know that, so let’s address what you are here for: the curious case of multiple Jasons.

Finally, Jason1 and Amanda were getting somewhere.

Sadly, that ended up being two separate locations on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 7.

It was rewarding to watch how Amanda came to find herself a new home.
