The Box is opening in another territory after TF1 snapped up the competition reality show. The French broadcaster becomes the latest buyer of the Norwegian format, which sees celebs exit a yellow box to face an unknown challenge.
It is hard for new formats to break through, but sometimes a show comes along and grabs international attention, which has been the case with The Box.
The show was created by Norwegian producer Seefood. In an unusual move, it is selling the show itself rather than handing it off to one of the major format distributors. The sales strategy has proved successful, with a flurry of deals for the format. Seefood has closed ten deals for the show, including with ITV in the UK.

Hulu has unveiled the official new trailer for Control Freak, an original horror movie starring Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi actor Kelly Marie Tran as a woman afflicted with a demonic parasite.
Control Freak debuts exclusively on Hulu on March 13.
The logline for this psychological thriller is straightforward, simple, and effective: “A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.”
Watch the new trailer below, which introduces the start of the parasitic affliction. Intriguingly, the trailer withholds any full glimpse of the entity, though the creepy, crawly new poster below might give us a better look.
In Control Freak, Tran plays “Valerie, a woman whose life spirals into chaos due to this inexplicable and relentless affliction.” Opposite Tran, Miles Robbins plays “her on-screen husband Robbie.” Toan Le rounds out the cast as Valerie’s father, Sang, with Kieu Chinh as Aunt Thuy.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has always been a series of surprises, balancing humor with genuine emotional moments, often without losing sight of its core characters. But in Season 5, the show achieved something truly special with The Box, an episode that can be considered the best of the series– a bottle episode that expertly blended character depth, suspense, and humor.

The episode takes place entirely within a single interrogation room featuring Jake Peralta, Captain Holt, and the suspect. This confined setting elevates the storytelling in significant ways. The focus completely shifts to the intense intellectual clash between the characters. The Box demonstrates that powerful character development and incisive dialogue can produce some of the most unforgettable moments in television.

Inspired by such plummy wartime satires as Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H* and Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not to Be, writer-director Hailey Gates’s Atropia looks at the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the War on Terror with a cockeyed air of farcical anti-drama. And despite its lack of apparent insight, the film trips and stumbles its way into a stirring anti-war message through a mountain of inspired inanities and heartfelt romance.
Fayruz (Alia Shawkat) is the best actor in Atropia, a.k.a. “The Box,” a fake country set up in the California desert as an immersive live-play scenario to train American combat troops before they deploy for Iraq. Giving her all to roles such as “Atropian DVD seller” or “mustard gas chemist,” Fayruz treats Atropia as a stepping stone to a career in Hollywood, always insisting that the next rotation will be her...

An absurdist glimpse at workaday life within one of the very real, very strange U.S. military training grounds where role-players simulate foreign battlegrounds in order to prepare our troops for their time in the field, Hailey Gates’ “Atropia” is hardly the first American comedy set during the Iraq War, which was something of a terrible farce unto itself. Well-trodden territory as this might be, however, it’s been a long time since beloved masterpieces like “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” and Larry the Cable Guy’s “Delta Farce” first put their stamp on the sub-genre, and the years gone by have made it possible for Gates’ feature debut — expanded from her 2020 Miu Miu short, “Shako Mako” — to go further through the looking glass than even Oliver Stone’s “W.” ever could.
Case in point: One early sequence in “Atropia” is built around a cameo by an extremely famous movie star who...

In writer-director Hailey Gates’ directorial debut Atropia, she dives into the Bush-era culture of toxic masculinity, nationalism and Islamophobia with an amusing and profoundly absurdist sense of satire.
Set in 2006, Atropia takes place at the titular U.S. military training ground in the California desert, where actors role-play as villagers in countries where the government plans to invade. Alia Shawkat stars as Fayruz, an ambitious actress determined to make her big break in Hollywood while working in the simulation, despite her conflicting feelings about the war in Iraq.
Although her parents accuse her of betraying her culture as they disapprove of her preparing soldiers to invade their country, the training ground is the only place casting her type (not a surprise for that era of Hollywood). The fractured relationship with her family represents an all-too-real generational divide for many children of immigrants through a heartfelt, yet cheeky portrayal by Shawkat.

The village is small and dense, lined with crumbling structures and the exploded remains of cars. The women, hanging laundry or selling American movies on DVD out of dusty briefcases, are suspicious. The men are outright paranoid, ducking down alleys or peering out of second-story windows. American troops patrol the area with assault rifles, where IEDs and chemical weapons await them. It’s a hellish war zone, and it’s entirely fake.
This is Atropia, the fictional town named after a very real military training camp in the Nevada desert. It’s the subject of Hailey Gates’ new film of the same name, playing in competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, starring Alia Shawkat and Callum Turner
“Growing up in L.A., there was a lot of lore about these places. You could see them from the freeway,” Gates told Variety on the eve of the premiere of her feature directing debut.

Exclusive: Norway’s latest format obsession, The Box, is getting a second season.
Commercial broadcaster TV2 has ordered a second run of the adventure reality format, in which celebrity contestants placed in separate boxes find themselves dumped in the middle of challenges that they know nothing about. Seafood TV will return to produce.
In Norway, the show launched earlier this month, and its first episode has now consolidated to over a million views, according to producers — no mean feat in a country of just over five million people. This makes it the channel’s highest-rated launch of the month, and de facto the year.
In each episode, contestants immediately find themselves in the middle of a challenge when their yellow box opens and must work out what to do, working with the others to achieve the goal. Each ep ends with a pair of contestants engaging in a duel to stay in the game.

One of the most groundbreaking shows in television history is "The Twilight Zone," created in 1959 by Rod Serling. An anthology series, each episode weaves into thought-provoking tales that individually veer into the realms of science fiction, fantasy, or outright horror. Well-received during its initial broadcast run, "The Twilight Zone" went on to produce multiple revival series after the original show's conclusion in 1964. And while horror wasn't always the series' main focus, it produced some of the most memorably frightening episodes of its time.
Whether asking disturbing existential questions or presenting genuinely terrifying antagonists and narrative stakes, "The Twilight Zone" has always been effective at telling scary stories. This remains true of several of its revivals, particularly the '80s iteration and the Paramount+ series that began in 2019. In its exploration of the surreal, there is always something haunting about "The Twilight Zone" and its best horror-oriented episodes will stay with...

Jack Black is best known for playing larger-than-life characters in comedy movies, which may not be surprising, as his favorite movie is a dark comedy about an eclectic mix of unusual characters. Jack Black has had a varied career, beginning as a child actor before branching into music with his band, Tenacious D. Black has become an established actor over the past decade, appearing in a more varied range of movies, including standout roles in King Kong and The Holiday. That said, even Jack Black's underrated movies tend to feature his signature zany and exaggerated comedy.
Jack Black's career began with small roles on TV shows like The X-Files, but he quickly rose to fame by playing slightly immature but comedic characters. Still, these were not the roles he connected to, with Black preferring characters with more emotional depth. Jack Black's best roles are the ones that give him a lot of freedom,...

When filmmaker Richard Kelly made his feature directorial debut "Donnie Darko" in 2001, it caused a stir in the arthouse world. "Donnie Darko" quickly accumulated a passionate cult who fell in love with its unbalanced hero (Jake Gyllenhaal) and its twisted time-travel plot. It was a combination psychological horror film and bizarro indie coming-of-age-in-the-1980s tale. Unsurprisingly, it only took a few additional years for "Donnie Darko" to become a regular staple on the midnight movie circuit, with fans dressing up as the film's enigmatic Frank the Bunny on Halloween.
The cult success of "Donnie Darko," however, seemingly went to Kelly's head as he appeared to become very, very convinced of his own importance as a new artistic voice in the indie film world. While many works of Richard Matheson ended up on the small screen, the author was a giant when it came to genre. From post-apocalyptic monsters to gremlins on a plane, Matheson fathered a treasure trove of speculative stories that have since inspired countless other writers, including Stephen King. King said of the late Matheson: “[He] fired my imagination by placing his horrors not in European castles and Lovecraftian universes, but in American scenes I knew and could relate to.” And of all his homegrown writings, Matheson’s short story “Button, Button” may very well be his most approachable. For everyone can understand the allure of immediate wealth, even if that windfall comes with strings attached. Matheson, however, wove this universal desire into a unique and uncanny moral quandary — one where the offer is not only too good to be true, it also has fatal consequences.

When Cameron Diaz was still in high school, she signed her first modeling contract and appeared in ads for Levi's and Calvin Klein. She became recognizable nationwide when she appeared on the cover of Seventeen Magazine in 1990. Fittingly enough, she was actually 17. Diaz continued to model for a few years and even appeared in a Coca-Cola campaign before successfully auditioning for the role of Tina in Chuck Russell's comedic superhero noir "The Mask" in 1994. The star of "The Mask" was Jim Carrey, then experiencing a massive career upswing, and Diaz was swept up with him, becoming a household name almost immediately.
Diaz almost instantly became a media sensation, and her acting career took off. In the years after "The Mask," Diaz appeared in notable indie dramas like "She's the One," "The Last Supper," and "Feeling Minnesota," all of them with notable co-stars. By 1997, she moved into Hollywood's top tier,...

Although Father Rudra Khatri died in From season 1, the character consistently appears to self-appointed sheriff Boyd Stevens throughout the show's second and third outings. As the Township's priest, Khatri was a voice of reason. Alongside Donna, the head of Colony House, Khatri is one of the Township's few leaders when Boyd and his family arrive in the purgatory-like location of From's Town. In life, Khatri acted as crucial counsel for Boyd, especially in the wake of Sara's violent outburst and death. Unlike Boyd, Khatri was firm in his convictions about The Box.
The Catholic priest oversaw the Town's rituals, including funerals and the choosing ceremony. Before arriving in the Township, Khatri was a parish priest in the Midwest. Just before From season 1's ending, Father Khatri was killed. However, he's remained in the show as a presence in Boyd's mind. Here is why From has kept Khatri in Boyd's story,...

In 2012, filmmaker Andrew Dominik released the follow-up to his critically acclaimed film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; its name, Killing Them Softly. Weve seen Jake Gyllenhaal in a lot of roles during his lengthy career, but none are quite as unique as his portrayal of the titular character in Donnie Darko. Richard Kellys (The Box) cult classic is an extremely trippy and mind-bending feature that centers around time travel and the barrage of emotions that one faces during their high school years. At its core, the movie is a reflection on mental health and existential dread that gives the coming-of-age genre a whole new meaning. Along with Gyllenhaal, the movie features an incredible lineup of performances from other A-list stars, including Patrick Swayze (Road House), Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight), Drew Barrymore (Scream), Mary McDonnell (The Fall of the House of Usher), Seth Rogen (This Is the End), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games franchise) and more.

Sometimes it’s hard to revisit a favorite TV series you haven’t seen in decades. Will the show hold up or be hopelessly dated? Happily, NBC’s groundbreaking 1993-98 police series “Homicide: Life on the Street” is just as brilliant as it was three decades Peacock recently dropped all seven seasons as well as 2000’s “Homicide: The Movie.”.
As NPR noted: “It was a cop show without gun battles or car chases, with a bracing shot of street-level realism; film mostly in Baltimore. ‘Homicide’ presented stuff you just didn’t see on network television back then: shaky, kinetic camera work, working stiff police detectives cracking jokes at gruesome murder scenes…serialized stories that arced over several episodes, heart-rending killings that never get solved.”
The series, which was set in the fictional Baltimore Police Department Unit, was based on David Simon’s (“The Wire”) 1991 book “Homicide: A Year in the Life of the Killing Streets.

Kendrick Lamar’s hometown Juneteenth show at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum was a star-studded ode to West Coast rap that culminated with dozen of artists and entertainers joining Lamar for an unprecedented moment of unity on stage. The concert had been announced less than two weeks before, on the back of Lamar’s victorious nine-song-long rap battle with Drake.
The Pop Out: Ken & Friends was curated into three sections, the first collection of West Coast artists under DJ Hed, the second under storied “Not Like Us” producer Mustard, and the third headlined by Lamar.

Dark Matter always had the potential for getting convoluted.
That finally happened on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 8.
Based on Blake Crouch's novel's premise, it was inevitable.
Every character's decision creates a new dimension with a new version of themselves in said dimension.
Lady in the Lake Trailer
Viewers got lulled into a false sense of security through the series' first seven episodes.
Evil Jason2 abducted good Jason1, stuck him in his home dimension, and took his place as Daniela's husband and Charlie's father.
There was even some limited effort to justify this as Jason2's attempt to rectify a past mistake: choosing scientific fame over domesticity.
But while Jason1 and Amanda were world-hopping around with The Box, they created new versions of themselves every time they stepped through a Corridor door into a new world.
And, not shockingly, all of these Jason1s had the same driving impetus: to...

I was kind of inclined to believe that Dark Matter is science fiction, but after watching the penultimate episode, I’ve changed my mind. It is more of a drama about a person who wanted to change his reality. And therefore, he spent a lifetime building a machine to help his cause. Jason2 had a close-to-perfect life, yet he wasn’t a happy man. His biggest regret in life was not marrying Daniela when she got pregnant with his child. He always asked himself: Did he choose the perfect path? Jason1, on the other hand, was a flawed man, but he was content with whatever he had. He loved Daniela and Charlie without any negativity holding him back, and that’s what made his pursuit of happiness perfect. But chuck it; you already know that, so let’s address what you are here for: the curious case of multiple Jasons.

Finally, Jason1 and Amanda were getting somewhere.
Sadly, that ended up being two separate locations on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 7.
It was rewarding to watch how Amanda came to find herself a new home.
She finally heeded Blair2's advice on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 5, which told her to find a world of her own.
FBI Season 7: Cast and Character Guide
Amanda burned bridges with her dimension when she helped Jason1 to escape from Velocity Lab.
So she needed to land someplace new.
That likely explained why she kept checking on her namesakes in every world on which they landed.
Amanda certainly deserved better from life than she had gotten.
Her Jason (Jason2) was more in love with his research than he was with her.
Then, when he decided he required domestic bliss, he found a Jason who had married a Daniela rather than starting a family with Amanda.

It's turning out to be a long ride home for Jason1.
He and Amanda's learning how to use The Box as transportation on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 5 is a lot like those movies where the hero has to determine how to fly an aircraft using controls labeled in a foreign language.
At least in that situation, the hero can use intuition to some degree. That primarily hasn't worked out for Jason1 and Amanda.
Instead, they've had to navigate using a brutal trial-and-error method, emphasizing error. So far, it hasn't killed either of them, but they've certainly been imperiled.
The pair has faced a steep learning curve since escaping from Leighton2's Velocity Labs on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 2.
They've landed on a snow planet, a flooded world, and another decimated by a pandemic. They've discovered seeming familiar to Jason1 doesn't make for a sure thing.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Dark Matter episode 3, "The Box."
The Dark Matter TV Show improves the believability of its villain's arc, adding depth to Jason2's character. Jason2 faces unexpected challenges blending into his new life, showcasing his flaws and vulnerabilities. The show's focus on Jason2's struggle highlights the unfeasibility of his plan, making it more realistic.
Dark Matter showrunner Blake Crouch has rectified an issue that stood out in the original novel, with the arc of the story's villain becoming much more believable. Originally published in 2016, the Dark Matter book, also written by Crouch, features the interesting story quirk of the hero also technically being the villain. The universe-swapping nature of the narrative requires several members of the Dark Matter cast to portray different versions of the same character. Included among those actors is Joel Edgerton, who is tasked with stepping into the shoes of two different versions of Jason Dessen.

Apple TV+’s latest sci-fi thriller Dark Matter already has us gripping the edge of our seats just two episodes in, but there are still plenty of questions to be answered. Like, how will Jason 1 (Joel Edgerton) return home to his loving wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), who is living unaware of her husband’s departure to an entirely different dimension? Why did Jason 2 (also Edgerton) kidnap Jason 1 and send him back to his alt-reality? How do all the other players at Velocity Labs tie into the nefarious scientific happenings going down at the R&d corp? The Multiverse is undeniably dominating the world of pop-culture. With Everything Everywhere All At Once sweeping the Oscars in 2023, Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing fan favorite web-slingers back to the big-screen and The Flash… well, perhaps it’s better not to talk about that one. Audiences fascination with the multi-verse has slowed down in 2024. Deadpool and Wolverine is set to “save the MCU” by bringing the Merc with a Mouth into the biggest cinematic universe in history and teaming him up with Hugh Jackman’s highly celebrated Wolverine; however, the multi-verse isn’t exclusive to superhero levels of extravagance.
Dark Matter uses the endless possibilities of parallel universes for deeper exploration. The new series, adapted from the 2016 novel written by Blake Crouch — who also acts as an executive producer and writer here — utilizes the sliding doors theory to tackle elements of love and regret.

Beskop Tshechu is the only documentary, animation and short film festival in Bhutan and is dedicated to promoting creative filmmaking and visual arts in the country through film screenings, awards and events. The festival was born out of an urgent need in the country for an alternative platform for filmmakers and audiences. As short films, documentaries and animations are rarely made for commercial gain, they are a very special and authentic form of expression, storytelling and communication which is vital for the growth of a creative and meaningful film industry in Bhutan. Many successful filmmakers around the world first hone their skills and talent by first attempting short forms of filmmaking. In a time where Bhutan's film industry is mainly modelled around and informed by commercial style films of melodrama and dance, the film industry suffers, and there are few meaningful/creative films with an authentic Bhutanese voice. Beskop Tshechu...

With eight seasons under its belt, Brooklyn Nine-Nine received its fair share of celebrity guests. Everyone, for example, remembers some iconic appearances, such as Sterling K. Brown in one of the best episodes of the show "The Box." However, people tend to forget a lot of terrific actors and actresses that had outstanding scenes in the sitcom.
Most of B99's guests are excellent comedians from Saturday Night Live or other actors who have already worked with creator Michael Schur in his other projects. From Zooey Deschanel's crossover with New Girl to Pete Davidson showcasing his comedy skills, the series is full of talented guest stars who took Brooklyn Nine-Nine to the next level.
