People who become overwhelmed by emotion often act irrationally. When Mamie enters the house and realizes, after looking at the family pictures on the wall, that the red haired young man is actually the son she's been searching for, she is overcome with emotion and loses the ability to think rationally: she runs from the house but goes in the wrong direction, falls down a hill, and runs across a street without checking to see if it's safe.
