Red Squad, the elite Starfleet Academy cadets in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, were so much worse than their Star Trek: The Next Generation counterparts, Nova Squadron. In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 19, "The First Duty", Nova Squadron members are investigated after attempting the dangerous Kolvoord Starburst maneuver that results in the death of their teammate, Joshua Albert. Nicholas Locarno (Robert Duncan McNeill) pushes Nova Squadron members Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton), Sito Jaxa (Shannon Fill), and Jean Hajar (Walker Brandt), to cover up their involvement, and the fact the maneuver had been Locarno's idea.
Although Nova Squadron disbanded after Wesley came clean about Josh's death, Red Squad takes Nova Squadron's place in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's season 4 2-parter, "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost". With nearly a century of movies in its catalog, Disney has made many films that viewers remember fondly. But quite a few titles, no matter how good, fail to stand the test of time and have unfortunately become forgotten. There could have been similar films with characters or story ideas, concepts that weren't popular with audience members, or just a more popular movie released around the same time.
Despite its abundance of comical moments, Bolt struggled to stand out among a menagerie of movies that year. The space-bound adventure of Treasure Planet was overshadowed by the meteor shower of competing holiday blockbusters. Even the large amount of amusing visual gags in Meet the Robinsons couldn't prevent its gradual fade from the audience's minds. These are just a few examples of the many unique and wonderful Disney films that, unfortunately, lost the battle with time and have now become buried in the past.

Plans are underway for a Bloodshot sequel. Vin Diesel will reportedly return for Bloodshot 2, as confirmed by Dan Mintz, the CEO of Dmg Entertainment group. However, that news broke in 2020, and three years later, it seems little progress has been made. Although there were reports of a script reading set to occur this fall, the WGA/SAG strike and Dielsel's other behemoth franchise, Fast and the Furious, seem to have taken up his time recently.
But the surprising headline for Valiant fans is undoubtedly Diesel's return to play the titular character in Bloodshot 2, an unexpected follow-up sequel to the 2020 movie. Yet if the box office returns warranted another comic property film unrelated to DC or Marvel, the question on superhero fanatics' minds is: why the nearly four-year delay?
An Underdog From Another Universe
Bloodshot initially underperformed by quite a margin, similar to a plethora of other films because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

RoboCop (2014) deserved more credit than he got, poor guy! Well, not so much a guy anymore as a random assortment of organs that were formally a guy – RoboCop has thrilled cult sci-fi fans for four decades!
An oddball in the superhero genre, the laconic cyborg in question remains in limbo, prompting long-time enthusiasts to ask: where is he now? Is their favorite law enforcement official in chromed armor going on patrol once more?
The Future, Passed!
In the likely future of RoboCop, sci-fi fanatics understand that therein lie infinite possibilities. RoboCop, as a character in canon video game media as well as comic books, has come across the likes of the Aliens (yes – those 'Aliens'), Predators (yes – those 'Predators'), and Terminators (yes – Arnie 'Terminators'!).
Given the CGI uptick and advancement in cinematic immersion, it's easy and feasible to see Peter Weller and Arnold Schwarzenegger slugging it out in an abandoned nuclear warehouse of the future.

Joining Skelton in the cast are Bella Dayne (Troy: Fall of a City), Akshay Khanna, and Mark Strepan (Before We Die).
Row will mark the feature debut of director Matthew Losasso and writer Nick Skaugen – and Skaugen has an acting role in the film as well. The story centers on a woman who washes ashore on a blood-stained rowing boat. With all of her crew mates missing, presumed dead, she must try and piece together fractured memories of the ordeal to prove her innocence.
Skaugen is producing the film with line producer Matt Schichter. Losasso provided the following statement: “An immense ocean appears to stretch infinitely in all directions and yet on board the Valiant,...

Sophie Skelton (Outlander, Blackbird), Bella Dayne (Troy: Fall of a City, Humans) and Akshay Khanna (Red, White & Royal Blue, Chloe) are set to lead the cast of U.K. thriller Row, now in preproduction and set to start shooting in Scotland in the coming weeks.
The film — the feature debut of director Matthew Losasso and writer Nick Skaugen, who also stars — revolves around a woman who washes ashore on a blood-stained rowing boat. Wednesday’s episode of American Horror Story: Double Feature was every mother’s worst nightmare, no matter what planet she’s from.
The penultimate hour of “Death Valley” welcomed Cody Fern as Valiant Thor, a handsome (and apparently robotic) liaison between the humans and aliens. His primary job, besides giving Mamie the mind-blowing sex that queen deserved, was overseeing what he called “the business at hand.” More specifically, he was there to process the harvesting of a new race, one that was “neither human nor us but able to survive on this earth.”

Australian outfit Hiatus Kaiyote have released a new song, “Red Room,” from their upcoming album, Mood Valiant, out June 25th via Brainfeeder Records/Ninja Tune.
The tune toes the line between slinky and woozy lo-fi soul, with tight bass and drums, winding guitar, and languid piano flowing beneath Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield’s vocals. The track also arrives with a music video, directed by Tré Koch, that finds Hiatus Kaiyote in a room that increasingly — and fittingly — turns red, including an old car with “Mood Valiant” scribbled all over it,...

The tale of the Valiant Cinematic Universe is already a strange one, even if the entire franchise’s output spans just one box office bomb. Looking back, Vin Diesel saying that he would travel to China regardless of how the studio felt about the rapidly spreading infection circulating around Wuhan so that he could promote Bloodshot feels like a lifetime ago, and since then, there’s been no shortage of rumors and speculation over what the future could potentially hold.

There is no doubt that Marvel and DC rule the roost when it comes to comic book movies. But that does not mean they don't have competitors. Valiant comics features its own list of exciting superhero titles, and the company recently made a less-than-stellar foray into films with the Vin Diesel-starrer Bloodshot, based on the comic series. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Dan Mintz, who runs Valiant Entertainment's parent company, Dmg Entertainment, and was a producer on Bloodshot, spoke about taking some cues from the McU on how to establish a comic book movie franchise.
"You're going through a studio process that takes many, many years. And I think, I think what we're really looking to do is to kind of get a little bit more into the Marvel cadence where you're putting out films that are back to back, so to speak. And so I think how...

It might be hard to imagine now given the continued and unprecedented success of the genre, but for a long time studios believed that superhero movies were too risky a proposition and not worth either the effort or investment required, with the most high-profile comic book hits in history up until the turn of the 21st Century mostly comprised of either Superman or Batman adventures.
The disastrous reception to Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin almost killed the genre completely, and while many point to Bryan Singer’s X-Men as the project that kicked off the explosion in popularity that’s still going strong two decades later, 1998’s Blade was arguably even more pivotal in showing the studios how comic book characters could be the subjects of great movies while also treating them seriously and with the greatest respect.

Marvel and DC are seen as the two main pillars of comic book movies with an interconnected universe and although they are seen as the two titans of the space, there is more than enough room for other comic book entities to make a name for themselves — and peeking its head around the corner and raising an eyebrow is Valiant Entertainment.
Over two years ago, Dan Mintz’s Dmg Entertainment took full control of the indie comics outfit Valiant Entertainment with over 2,000 characters in its library and now they are ready to disrupt the comic book cinematic universe in a space that has been occupied by Marvel and DC — and mostly dominated by the former.

In 1992, every comics company had a guy with gun – DC’s Deathstroke, Marvel’s Punisher and Cable, Fleetway’s Judge Dredd, and then came Valiant’s Bloodshot.
In the 2010s, every studio needed a comics franchise to exploit for box office supremacy – Warner’s DC, Disney’s McU, and Sony, not happy sharing Spider-Man with Disney, picked up Valiant’s Bloodshot from the Columbia scrap heap by way of Paramount.
In the intervening years, filmgoers had already been treated to an endless array of gun-toting, cool-looking figures from Neo to John Wick (who just happen to be played by the endlessly fascinating Keanu Reeves).
There was no particular demand for one more, certainly not one played by Vin Diesel whose range goes from A to B. From Pitch Black to Hobbs and Shaw, he’s pretty much the same guy, without the range of roles his rival, Dwayne Johnson,...

Wrestler/actor John Cena can be an enigmatic man at times. Take his Instagram profile for instance. He has made a habit of posting seemingly random photos on his account and specifically states in his bio that the pictures will be posted with no explanation, for the viewer's enjoyment. Recently, Cena posted a panel from Valiant Comics' X-o Manowar series.
The post sent fans into a tizzy over what it could mean. Was it a random post from a comic that Cena likes? Or was it an indirect declaration of Cena's desire to play the character of the superhero X-o Manowar? Or was it a confirmation of him having already signed on to play the role?

We’re at the point where there are dozens of Marvel movies, dozens of DC movies, and a couple Dark Horse ones sprinkled here and there. With the release of Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot, we’re getting our first attempt at a movie adapting Valiant Comics. As it is, Valiant has only been represented outside of the comic page via several video games in the ’90s and a web series from a couple years ago centering around the character Ninjak.
If Bloodshot ends up driving enough interest, we might get another Valiant property on the silver screen to maybe push for a Valiant Cinematic Universe. At the very least, there should be some people interested in reading Bloodshot stories and maybe stretching into the wider comic universe.

Not only that, but streaming services such as Netflix have new offerings as well, with Disney+ and HBO bringing relatively recent flicks to streaming as well, leaving viewers with abundant options heading into the weekend.

Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot became the latest movie to fall victim to the Coronavirus pandemic, with the comic book adaptation failing to hit a $10 million domestic opening weekend. Even though the movie cost a modest $42 million to produce, the closure of cinemas around the world made it virtually impossible for the flick to turn a profit, so Sony instead decided to make it available for digital download after just two weeks in theaters.
While it may recoup some of the box office losses, Bloodshot might still end up costing the studio money, which has already thrown plans for the proposed Valiant Comics cinematic universe into disarray. In 2015, China-based Dmg Entertainment signed a nine-figure deal to turn their properties into an interconnected set of movies and TV shows, and it looks like Bloodshot may have already rendered the experiment a bust, like many a failed cinematic universe before it.

Well, that was fast. One week after Bloodshot bombed at the box office, sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us Jim Carrey is returning as the Mask in Space Jam 2 and that Transformers is being rebooted, both of which we now know to be true – say Paramount is looking to reboot the character as they plan on buying the rights back from Sony. Apparently, their plan is to make a Valiant cinematic universe with the other properties they own, including Harbinger, Faith, X-o Manowar, etc.

In an age when Marvel and DC have proven the immense marketability of the superhero genre, Valiant Comics has also entered the movie business with Bloodshot. With our world changing in real-time as America grips with the coronavirus outbreak, movie theaters across America stand as the last line of entertainment to remain open, as theme parks, sports games, and events close down for indefinite amounts of time. Sources tell me that it will come down to local governments in regards to which cinemas remain open or closed. To date, the big three chains –AMC, Regal, and Cinemark– haven’t declared a nationwide shutdown, though I hear 11 movie theaters in the NorthEast have shuttered.

“You don’t have to have a history to have a future,” Guy Pearce’s Dr. Emil Harting says to Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel), the titular hero of director David S.F. Wilson’s Bloodshot. Bloodshot, the upcoming superhero action movie starring Vin Diesel, could very well be the beginning of a Valiant Cinematic Universe if the actor gets his way. Whilst on the press tour for the Sony Pictures blockbuster, Diesel suggested there are plenty of movies in the works featuring characters from all across the vast Valiant Universe. Cape Town, South Africa native David S.F.
