SyFy is getting in the Halloween spirit, programming the "original" film Scarecrow on October 5th.  Shallow Ground and Kaw director Sheldon Wilson directs while Rick Suvalle (Roadkill, V.I.P.) writes.  Lacey Chabert (Lost in Space, Black Christmas) stars.

The synopsis goes like this...  For generations, it was an urban legend that lived in the nightmares of children. Now, the season to rejuvenate the tale will revive a town's darkest fears. With the Scarecrow Festival on the horizon, school teacher Aaron Harris is doling out punishment for six students serving detention, including the moody Tyler, Goth girl Nikki, wrestling team captain Daevon, and straight-a student Jun.

SyFy's Snowmageddon to Wreak Havoc Tonight! (9/8pm Central)
Director: Sheldon Wilson (Shallow Ground, Mothman).

Cast: Michael Hogan (“Battlestar Galactica”), Magda Apanowicz (“Caprica”), and David Cubitt (“Medium”).

Just when viewers thought they have seen it all, SyFy Channel is going to get experimental with Snowmageddon. This made-for-tv product airs 9/8pm Central tonight.

With such an auspicious title like this one, does that mean that all viewers will see is nothing but death and destruction? Yes and No. There's going to be destruction, but when this title implies a blizzard in the likes that no man wants to experience, that is not going to happen. To see mankind surviving within a snowstorm, or even a sandstorm for that matter, can be interesting if the story is done right.

When a mysterious snow globe is supposed to be the link, there is a potential mystery. But this B-movie looks like it will remain simple. When this orb is delivered to a...

A Flurry of Snowmageddon Clips Rain Down from Syfy
Syfy is broadcasting the weather this weekend, and it’s a 100% chance of Snowmageddon. Snowmageddon Will Shake Up Syfy for the Holidays
I don't know why I'm bothering to write about a supernatural Syfy disaster flick called Snowmageddon about a magical snow globe that when shaken unleashes a wintery apocalypse when the actual apocalypse is a little more than a day away. Do you realize when my life passes before my eyes how many of these Syfy movies I'm going to end up watching again in mega fast forward?

David Cubitt ("Medium"), Michael Hogan ("Battlestar Galactica"), and Magda Apanowicz ("Caprica") star in this Cinetel production from director Sheldon Wilson (Shallow Ground, Mothman) that'll probably make its bow on Syfy sometime this holiday season given the film's plot synopsis. Snowmageddon's plot kind of sounds like the basis for a very special Christmas episode of "Friday the 13th: The Series" that never got made.

When the Miller family discovers a mysterious gift outside their home on Christmas Eve, they could never imagine it...

Monsters - Review

First, the raw numbers: this is director and writer Gareth Edwards’ first feature, the movie cost a purported $15,000, internationally speaking the film has grossed over 1.5 million dollars, this is the one film you need to see this fall.

One of the spectacular aspects of a movie that is labeled sci-fi even though we only really glimpse the science of the fiction at the very beginning and then near the end which, really, is the crowning achievement of this little film that could, is that this movie exists at all. Actor Scoot McNairy, last seen in the very sweet and gentile film In Search of a Midnight Kiss, and his co-star Whitney Able are essentially starring in a film where...

DVD Releases: 5/4/2010: Put the Meadowoods Slasher in Cold Storage and Never Sleep Again
Only one genre related Blu-ray hits stores this week -- Escape from L.A. -- but a decent crop of DVDs accompanies it, including the documentary to end all documentaries, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy.

In addition we get a couple of two-packs, Pulse/Sick Nurses and Midnight Movie/Killer Movie. I find the latter pairing interesting -- and helpful -- as I've never quite been able to remember which movie is which when it comes to those two flicks. There's also an odd three-pack: Severed: Forest of the Dead/Shallow Ground/The Rage.

Now that Paul Wesley is on everyone's radar thanks to "The Vampire Diaries", his previous brief outing as an angel in TV's "Fallen" has of course hit DVD. The pilot for another failed TV show, "Virtuality", also comes out on disc this week.

Lionsgate is finally releasing Cold Storage, UK "shocker" Dark Nature is a welcome visitor to our shores,...

Syfy's Mothman Spreads Its Wings in New Clip
Despite the promising looking poster art that was being shown around at Afm a few months ago, the first clip for Syfy's Mothman had made its way online to prove that it's more of the same goofy stuff we can expect from the network. Sigh.

Sheldon Wilson (Shallow Ground, Screamers: The Hunting) directed the flick for Rhi Entertainment, and it stars Jewel Staite of "Firefly" and "Stargate: Atlantis". Wilson also shares a writing credit alongside "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" writers Sonny Lee and Patrick Walsh.

Well, at the very least this mythical psychic menace will be killing folks this time around instead of just making predictions about disasters. Look for it on Syfy April 24th at 9/8 Central.

Allow me to step into the creature's vacated psychic shoes -- I predict a scathing review from the Foywonder! Click below to watch the clip! I wonder if the monster will leave...

Firefly Star Encounters Mothman on Syfy
No relation to the awful Mothman Prophecies movie (if you ever read the book, then you know why I just described the film as awful; and if you have never read the book, you should and then you, too, will realize why the film was so lame), Syfy has finally checked off enough other cryptids from its list to make a new film about the Mothman starring a "Firefly".

Not much is known about the plot of this Syfy-bound Mothman movie simply titled Mothman other than the glowy-eyed cryptozoological entity in this version also kills people, which I guess is a major step up from crank calling people in that terrible Richard Gere movie. Don't expect this one to adhere too closely to the facts of case either.

Sheldon Wilson (Shallow Ground, Screamers: The Hunting) is wrapping up post-production on this Rhi Entertainment entry starring Jewel Staite of "Firefly" and...

DVD Releases: Sept 22, 2009: The Chosen One Finds Grave Danger in the Book of Blood
A handful of rather bizarre DVD re-releases are on tap this week for some reason including Evil Remains, Shallow Ground, and Satan's Little Helper; but at least they're accompanied by several new films, a box set of the entire Friday the 13th: The Series, a twin-pack of Carnival of Souls in both color and black & white, and Shaun of the Dead and Godzilla on Blu-ray!

My personal pick of the week is Clive Barker's Book of Blood (review here), which I had the chance to watch a few days ago and enjoyed quite a bit. If you're a fan of "Wtf" type flicks, then be sure to add 1972's The Reincarnation of Isabel to your shopping cart ... if for no other reason than to see Mickey Hargitay (the ex-husband of Jayne Mansfield and father of "Law & Order: Svu" star Mariska Hargitay) in all his glory.

Trailer for 'Screamers 2' -- Yep, 'Screamers 2'
Raise your hand if you remember the movie Screamers. Ok, keep your hand raised if you remember anything other than "Peter Weller," "Philip K. Dick," and "box office failure." Yeah, that's what I thought. It's not that Screamers is that rotten of a sci-fi horror movie ... more that it's just Ok. Not awful, but certainly not cool enough to warrant a full-bore cult following. But that hasn't stopped a bunch of Canadian filmmakers from unleashing Screamers: The Hunting.

I'll embed the trailer clip in just a sec, but since Quiet Earth did the leg-work on this item, we'll refer you to their site for more info. Screamers: The Hunting looks pretty plain across the board, but of course I'm always interested in seeing a video sequel to a 14-year-old sci-fi flick that nobody talks about anymore. (I'm weird that way. Someone kick me if they ever find a trailer for...
