No streaming service does a director retrospective like the Criterion Channel, and March offers two masters at opposite ends of exposure. On one side is Michael Mann, whose work from Thief through Collateral (minus The Keep) is given a spotlight; on the other is Alain Guiraudie, who (in advance of Misericordia opening on March 21) has five films arriving. (2001’s duet of That Old Dream That Moves and Sunshine for the Scoundrels have perhaps never streamed in the U.S. before.) Meanwhile, three noirs from Douglas Sirk are programmed alongside a Lee Chang-dong retrospective that features three new restorations.
Showcases will be staged for Dogme 95, Best Supporting Actor winners, and French Poetic Relaism. In Michael Mann's "Collateral," Los Angeles cab driver Max Durocher (Jamie Foxx) spends his nights picking up and dropping off customers across the bustling city. Mann hones in on the vivid texture of the city at night, the subtle beauty of the busy neon-lit streets, and the eerie silence that fills up the cramped, empty alleyways. Something ominous seems to be lurking beneath the lull of everyday mundanities, and this sentiment manifests in the form of Vincent (Tom Cruise), a hitman who takes Max hostage after boarding his cab as a customer. A game of tense cat-and-mouse follows ... but an odd incident occurs even before Vincent boards Max's cab and terrorizes the man to no end.
When Vincent arrives at the airport in the film's opening, he bumps into a man who hands him a bag. This man, played by none other than Jason Statham, is credited solely as "Airport Man,...

From his early days as part of the comedic ensemble of Fox’s In Living Color to his more recent health challenges, Jamie Foxx has been known to defy expectations. His talent for being flamboyant, while charming, allowed Foxx to hold his own opposite legends such as Al Pacino,Tommy Lee Jones, and Eddie Murphy. When the comedian was cast opposite cinematic icon Tom Cruise in Michael Mann’s Collateral in 2004, he delivered an understated performance that transitioned him to Oscar-caliber status.

It has been 12 years since Henry Cavill first debuted as the Man of Steel but the fans loyal to Zack Snyder and his grimdark vision of the DC universe have still been unable to move past the actor’s version of Superman. Those faithful to Cavill, in the meanwhile, have taken his entire career into account and not only rendered him the best Superman but also one of the best actors working in Hollywood right now.

The recently leaked audition tape of the actor as James Bond has further fanned the flames of mass discord as fans cannot reconcile with the fact that Cavill was twice rejected from the role that he seems to be tailor-made for. The lost 007 role combined with his ill-fated arc as Superman and the much-beloved Witcher has thrown the fans into a spiral of confusion and blame.

Good morning angels! Cameron Diaz is back on-screen kicking butt, but no, not in a new “Charlie’s Angels” film. This one is “Back in Action.”
Now streaming on Netflix, the film centers on Emily and Matt, two spies who learn during a mission that they’re having a baby. When that mission gets compromised, they have the opportunity to fake their deaths, and they promptly take it, so that they can raise their family outside a dangerous life.
“Back in Action” marks Cameron Diaz’s first on-screen role in more than 10 years, and also a reunion for her and Jamie Foxx, after they starred together in her last film, “Annie.”
But you’ll recognize more than just this duo. Here are the major players in “Back in Action.”

The Academy Awards committee recently announced their 2025 nominations for the Best Actor category. And boy oh boy, is it going to be cut-throat with the likes of Ralph Fiennes and Timothée Chalamet competing against each other. But talk of fierce competition and we’re often reminded of the 77th Academy Awards, where Jamie Foxx was pitted against veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood, and Johnny Depp.

Yet, the actor of color who was nominated for two categories—Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, ended up emerging victorious in the stiff competition. Despite losing the supporting actor category (which seemed rather easy to win) Jamie Foxx turned the tables and took home the coveted award for Best Actor, leaving DiCaprio, Depp, and Eastwood in the dirt.

Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx are both major names in Hollywood, with the former being one of the biggest movie stars of all time. Cruise is widely known for his work in the Mission: Impossible franchise and the two Top Gun movies, as well as for films like Jerry Maguire (1996) and Risky Business (1983). He can next be seen in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning this spring, his potentially last time playing the superspy Ethan Hunt. The actor has become a worldwide sensation, having grossed over $10 billion as a leading man at the box office throughout his career.
Foxx, on the other hand, is known not just for being a movie star, but also for being a comedian and an R&b singer. Ray (2004) marked one of Foxx's first major leading big screen roles, and he ended up winning the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as musician Ray Charles.

In his feature debut, Belgian filmmaker Michiel Blanchart takes a simple and familiar action film set-up and gives it his own spin by adding pertinent social commentary. In “Night Call,” Mady (Jonathan Feltre), a young locksmith, has quite the violent and eventful evening in Brussels. He tangles with nefarious characters, makes affecting friendships and runs against the clock to save himself. Blanchart proves himself adept at giving all his ensemble various shading, shifting the audience’s allegiances and making his film much more than the usual brutal actioner.

Netflix is losing a Top Gun-esque movie starring Jamie Foxx and Jessica Biel. While the streaming service is known for original movies and TV shows including Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, Wednesday, Carry-On, and Leave the World Behind, their library is also populated with titles that are licensed from other companies. As these licensing agreements expire or change quite often, every month there are usually quite a few titles either joining or leaving Netflix.
The Top Gun-inspired movie that is departing the platform soon is one of these licensed titles, and it is particularly star-studded. Jamie Foxx is a well known multihyphenate who is a stand-up comedian and musician along with being a decorated actor, having won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 musical biopic Ray. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor that same year for his work in Collateral.

From Captain Vidal in Pan’s Labyrinth to Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, charismatic sadists have always been an integral part of cinema. But amid the numerous villains in film history, Tom Cruise’s character in Magnolia ranks among the very best in that category. As of today, the 1999 film is not only one of Cruise’s best works but also Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterpiece.

Tom Cruise comes with a lot of expectations and responsibilities attached to his name. The actor, who has made himself out to be a modern-day legend simply on the back of blockbuster action movies, is an A-lister for a reason. For a long time, Cruise has known exactly which path to take in order to be a star with unmatched glory.

In the years since his Top Gun fame, Cruise has given the industry a taste of every genre and the variable range of his innate skills in acting. From dangerous and charismatic in Interview With the Vampire to a psychotic assassin in Collateral, from a comical antagonist in Tropic Thunder to a cowardly time traveler in Edge of Tomorrow – he has done it all.
Now, it seems as though Tom Cruise might be up for a repeat of that last experience with a long-awaited Edge of Tomorrow sequel.

Tom Cruise is often called ‘The Last Movie Star,’ and for a very good reason. Over his five-decade career, he’s become one of the most famed names in Hollywood, drawing crowds with his blockbuster roles.
Think Top Gun, Mission: Impossible, and, of course, his signature heartthrob status. But beyond the splendid, tempestuous roles, there’s a side of Cruise that often gets overlooked. That side comes out in the 2004 thriller Collateral, where the movie star played a hitman.

Tom Cruise is renowned for his intense training for stunts that wow on the big screen, but his movie Collateral taught him and director Michael Mann that even the most meticulous preparation can all be for naught. Collateral is an excellent and underrated entry in the filmographies of Cruise and costar Jamie Foxx, and one of the few in which Cruise plays a straight-up villain. In Collateral, Cruise's hitman, Vincent, hires Foxx's cabbie, Max, to drive him around Los Angeles from job to job. As the story unfolds, leading to Collateral's cathartic ending, Michael Mann's trademark tension increases.
Also a trademark of Michael Mann movies is the occasional surreal scene that's loaded with symbolism, even among the action and high stakes, which often unfold at night in moody, beautifully lit shots set to standout tracks. Silver screen staple Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood's most entertaining leading men and a certified action superstar, with an illustrious career spanning four decades and countless big screen knockouts. At this point, it really is a wonder if there's anything Tom Cruise can't do. After falling, jumping, and flying through the air in a fashion that makes mere mortals tremble, one thing he can check off the bucket list is making his way onto IMDb's Top 250. With a filmography consisting of some iconic level entries that have defined eras and raised the bar in their respective genres, it only made sense that his work would be shown some love alongside some of the greatest films ever made. What's surprising is just which film made the cut.
Even before his magnificent run of "Mission: Impossible" movies (which all displayed his actual magnificent run), Cruise had appeared in films like "A Few Good Men," "Jerry Maguire," "Collateral," and "Risky Business." But none of them could compare to the time he got back in the cockpit as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in "Top Gun: Maverick.

Tom Cruise is perhaps the most well-known movie star on the planet, and he's widely known for his work in the action genre. Cruise's role as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise, in particular, has seen him participating in shootouts, car chases, motorcycle chases, and foot chases, all involving stunt work. Cruise, however, is also an action star outside his work in Mission: Impossible.
Cruise recently appeared in Oblivion (2013) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014), both action movies with sci-fi twists. He also took on action with a rom-com element in Knight and Day (2010). Cruise's roles in Top Gun: Maverick and as Jack Reacher are also both action-oriented. It was in 2004, however, that Cruise played one of his most memorable characters, showing off a new side of himself in an intense crime thriller that features a handful of realistic shootouts.

Brian Cox reveals that he and Anthony Hopkins agreed not to talk about both playing Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter (1986) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991), respectively. Based on the Thomas Harris novels, Hanniba's first movie appearance was in Michael Mann's Manhunter, which follows FBI profiler Will Graham (William Petersen) as he consults with Lecter as he chases a killer dubbed the "tooth fairy." Jonathan Demme's Silence of the Lambs features a similar setup, with Jodie Foster's Clarice Starling working with Lecter to catch serial killer Jame Gumb (Ted Levine).

Bad news for Tom Cruise fans, action fans, and, well, every movie fan, really, as one of the Hollywood icon’s best movies is leaving Netflix at the end of the month. Released back in 2004 (how has it already been 20 years!?) the neo-noir action thriller Collateral finds Cruise on rare form as the villain of the piece. Stalking his way across Los Angeles for one night, Cruise’s charismatic hitman Vincent soon draws a mild-mannered cab driver, played by Jamie Foxx into his violent web.
Directed by Michael Mann, Collateral boasts stellar performances from both Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, with the rest of the cast counting Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Peter Berg, and Javier Bardem among its ranks. While this is somewhat self-sabotage, you should really just stop reading now and watch Collateral on Netflix before it’s too late as the movie leaves the streamer on December 31. If you are still here,...

While Tom Cruise’s overall production may have slowed down with age, the three-time Oscar-nominee has still released some hits recently, such as Top Gun: Maverick, and Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Dead Reckoning. 20 years ago, Cruise starred alongside Jamie Foxx in Collateral, the crime thriller that’s currently streaming on Netflix along with several other Cruise movies. However, Netflix has officially announced that Collateral will leave the platform on December 31, leaving fans of the film no way to celebrate the new year with one of their favorite classics if they don’t have Paramount+, the only other platform where it’s currently streaming. Mark Ruffalo and Javier Bardem also star alongside Jada Pinkett Smith and Peter Berg in the film, which earned strong scores of 86% from critics and 84% from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

At this point in his career, Tom Cruise has achieved just about everything. He's arguably one of our last true movie stars, whose name above a title can nearly guarantee success, and his death-defying stunts in his various action films prove his dedication to entertaining audiences around the world. Because of all this, sometimes people forget about Tom Cruise, the actor. The man who is much more than a marquee name and a glorified stuntman. Cruise has proven himself immensely as an actor, but in recent years, he has shied away from showcasing it and has dedicated a big chunk of his career to being Ethan Hunt.

The last time Tom Cruise played a movie villain was in 2004's Collateral, an 86%-scored crime thriller that's currently playing on Netflix. The best Tom Cruise movies range from critically acclaimed hits like Magnolia and Eyes Wide Shut to major action franchise films like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible. As one of the world's most recognizable and beloved movie stars, almost everyone has seen a Tom Cruise movie and is familiar with his action-hero persona, making it all the more exciting to see a movie where he's playing a different mold of character.
Like The Rock or Ryan Reynolds, Tom Cruise has found a character type that brings audiences to movie theaters. It’s been a wondrous year for 4K Uhd releases that have been long overdue. Whether you’re a horror fan who felt a weight come off your shoulders with the release of Mike Flanagan’s Hush or were excited to relive The Duke’s glory days after it was announced that the John Wayne-led Western, The Searchers, would hit 4K Uhd, it’s been a good year for cinephiles. And, though we’ve had the chance to add plenty of Michael Mann’s titles, like Collateral and Heat to our collections, there are still two that even the director is stuck wondering about.

Michael Mann's neon-lit LA noir thriller Collateral is marking its 20th anniversary, and it's the best way to watch a groundbreaking film. The movie's incredible cinematography was as a result of Mann going full digital for the first time, and it looks stunning. Starring Tom Cruise as a cold-blooded hitman and Jamie Foxx in an Oscar-nominated role as his unwitting cab driver, the film remains one of Mann’s finest works. Beloved by critics with an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score, and an 84% audience score to match, it's one of Mann's best-known mainstream movies and is well worth a watch. The new 4K Uhd edition of Collateral features a gorgeous transfer onto disc as it puts the beautiful and terrifying Los Angeles at night on full display.

If you haven't seen Coralie Fargeat's hyper-stylish body horror movie "The Substance," do yourself a favor and go inject this gorgeous neon gorefest directly into your eyeballs. Our review called it "bloody, brilliant" and "bonkers," but even if it doesn't totally work for you for whatever reason, this audacious flick about aging fitness model Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) features some of the best cinematography and performances of the year. Moore is vulnerable and relatable as Elisabeth, who uses an experimental new treatment to split the younger part of herself into a separate person, Sue (Margaret Qualley), really baring it all for audiences in a number of ways. Qualley is also fantastic (as always), a perfect example of energy and youth, mixed with all of the reckless abandon and self-centeredness youth can bring.

Tom Cruise, the Hollywood megastar, has always heeded his own counsel, and for better or for worse, the choices he made throughout his career paid off. Now, at the pinnacle of the industry, Cruise can boldly claim that he is the last true Hollywood icon left standing. And such a label comes with its own set of responsibilities.

Cruise is not the first actor to say no to sequels. The trend was only popular with sci-fi or action-adventure films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. For artists looking for something more creatively grounded, sequels were never an option.
It didn’t come as a surprise then that an actor like Cruise refused to entertain the idea of a sequel well until the 2000s when he left behind his Oscar-baiting career to pursue something more theatrically motivated aka the Mission: Impossible franchise.

In 2017s American Made, Tom Cruise proved that he can be at his best when playing the exact opposite of Top Guns franchise hero Maverick. In 2017s American Made, Tom Cruise plays real-life smuggler Barry Seal, a larger-than-life figure who ran drugs for the CIA during Iran-Contra. While Barry Seal made a lot of money during his escapades, American Made doesnt portray the pilot as a charismatic antihero. The fact that the drug money was used to fund anti-Communist death squads in South America is never far from the audiences mind, making Cruises character an amoral figure.

Let's just cut the controversy off at the pass. Any movie that stars Jamie Foxx alongside Tom Cruise on its way to making over $200 million at the global box office is hard to sell as "underrated." However, in many ways, that's exactly what Michael Mann's Collateral has become.
Collateral is the story of Tom Cruise's lone-wolf killer, a man in an impeccable gray suit named Vincent, who, over the course of one long night, forces Jamie Foxx's unfortunate cab driver into taxing him around the city of Los Angeles as he takes out a series of five targets involved in a grand-jury case. At the time of its release, many wouldn't have considered Collateral to be director Michael Mann's best film, and yet, that's exactly what it might have become. Twenty years later, Collateral is one of the greatest crime-based thrillers ever made.

Lady Eboshi (Minnie Driver), one of the major antagonists in Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke, may cause a lot of trouble for San (Claire Danes), Ashitaka (Billy Crudup), and the environment in general, but she's such a complex and sympathetic character, I could almost see her being the hero of another Studio Ghibli film. While Jason Statham is best known for playing action heroes, beginning with his breakthrough starring role in the 2002 action film The Transporter, some of his most memorable roles have been in a supporting capacity, as seen with his compelling supporting performance in the 2004 thriller film Cellular and his memorable cameo appearance in Collateral.
Stathams career moved in an exciting and unexpected new direction with the 2015 spy action comedy film Spy, in which he surprised audiences and critics with his hilarious supporting comedic performance as Rick Ford, a grizzled CIA agent who forms an uneasy partnership with inexperienced field agent Susan Cooper, played by Melissa McCarthy, in their quest to wrest control of a portable nuclear device from a murderous arms dealer.
Through Stathams entirely self-referential and unpretentious performance, Rick Ford becomes an inspired comedic creation in Spy, which proves that his acting repertoire is much broader than his increasingly repetitive starring action vehicles suggested.

Some movies take circuitous routes to production. It all, as we like to say, starts on the page, and sometimes all you have on that page is a pitch -- a basic idea centered on a killer hook. And that pitch can go through various permutations as different producers, writers, directors, and stars become attached and unattached. Take "Bad Boys" for instance. Long before Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer teamed up-and-coming filmmaker Michael Bay with the then unproven-at-the-box-office duo of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the project was intended to be a broad two-hander comedy starring "Saturday Night Live" veterans Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz. Hard to imagine a four-film-and-counting franchise blossoming out of that.

Tom Cruise's fighting in The Last Samurai earns a positive review from a real-life martial arts and katana instructor. The film, which also stars Ken Watanabe and Billy Connolly, features a number of intense action sequences, with Nathan engaging in various battles after learning to fight like a samurai.

Leading Australian filmmaker Warwick Thornton has signed on to direct First Warrior, an epic feature about Australian Aboriginal resistance fighter Pemulwuy. Aussie stars Sam Worthington (Avatar, Hacksaw Ridge) and Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer, Zero Dark Thirty) have boarded the project in lead parts, while a casting search is said to be underway for the lead role of Pemulwuy.
A Bidjigal man of the Sydney tribes, Pemulwuy led a 12-year resistance against British settlers moving into his people’s traditional lands as Australia was colonized in the late 1700s.
One of Australia’s most admired directors, Thornton broke through in 2009 when his directorial debut, Samson & Delilah won the Cannes Film Festival’s Camera d’Or prize. His 2017 film Sweet Country took home Venice’s Special Jury Prize and his most recent work, The New Boy, starring Cate Blanchett, premiered at Cannes last year.
