The Justice League Dark live-action movie is looking doomed. Warner Bros. released its slate of upcoming projects and it is nowhere to be found after announcing that it was in development some time ago. The Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro was once attached to direct and he recently revealed that he wanted to have Swamp Thing on board and spoke about how much the character meant to him. Now, Joseph Kahn has shared some of his concept art for Justice League Dark that he pitched to DC and Warner Bros. that was ultimately rejected.
Over the summer, director Joseph Kahn (Bodied) revealed that he had previously pitched his ideas for the long awaited Justice League Dark project and that his ideas were rejected. Now that the movie doesn't appear to be happening at all anymore, Kahn has released some of his concept art for the project done in...

Richard Armitage chats to us about his new audio production, Dracula, The Hobbit, his upcoming projects and more...
Just the other month we had the pleasure of chatting to Richard Armitage when he was promoting Pilgrimage, but as luck (and his productivity) would have it, we were given the opportunity for a catch up about his latest voice performance, with the Audible release of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde.
Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story comes as part of The Monster Collection, a Gothic trilogy which also includes a reading of Frankenstein by Dan Stevens and Dracula by Greg Wise. There’s also ‘an exclusive introduction by Dr. Maria Mellins and Dr. Peter Howell, Senior Lecturers in Gothic literature at St Mary's University, London’ who, strangely enough, are both people I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years – it’s a small world indeed.

Of all the legendary early horror films Carl Theodor Dreyer’s vampire nightmare was once the most difficult to appreciate — until Criterion’s restoration of a mostly intact, un-mutilated full cut. Dreyer creates his fantasy according to his own rules — this pallid, claustrophobic horror is closer to Ordet than it is Dracula or Nosferatu.

I was stoked have scored a ticket for the limited-run (one week) theatrical screening of the new Grateful Dead documentary at IFC Cinema in the West Village. A four-hour love fest for Deadheads young and old, and more importantly for those music fans and the curious who just never got "it" and what it means to be a Deadhead. Expertly handled by director Amir Bar-Lev, there is so much to mine here that I can't imagine how much was left on the cutting room floor. (Props to executive producer Martin Scorsese, too.) Jerry's Frankenstein story frames the movie in a way that initially seems odd but by the end of the film makes perfect sense. After all, like the Monster, the band was "assembled" by the various parts (members, friends, fans, staff) that comprised it. Messy, joyous entropy in action; seemingly random, but actually spiritually...

Comedy is very subjective but a great comedy will stand the test of time and continue to make generation after generation laugh. Some people like their humor dry, while some like it shocking and offensive. Whatever your taste, good humor will always be out there. Here are 20 great comedies that will no doubt continue to be appreciated in the future.
20. Fargo: The Cohen Brothers funniest black comedy may not be for everyone's taste, because it is quite violent. However, underneath all that is a droll observation on the human condition, highlighted by a winning performance from Frances McDormand as a very likeable and very pregnant police chief. Her character police chief Marge Gunderson is kind, clever and compassionate. She’s a much more admirable role model than all the recent ‘badass female’ clichés we’ve been inundated with lately. Another standout here is William H. Macy as a two-bit schemer who's plan utterly backfires.

We love RoboCop and Terminator 2 for their action and characters. But there’s also tragic element that makes their stories soar...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Terminator 2, Terminator Genisys, Blade Runner and RoboCop.
Imagine you’re Detroit cop Alex Murphy. You’re an ordinary man in every respect: a loving husband and father with a home and a mortgage. But then you wake up one day and you aren’t Alex Murphy anymore. The hands you look down on are no longer your hands. Your memories have been replaced by directives.
The cinemagoers who made Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop a hit in 1987 probably weren’t expecting a film about the nature of human existence, and some may not have consciously noted its philosophical undercurrent at all. But it’s this existentialist edge that, when coupled with its searing violence and black humour, makes for such an irresistible sci-fi movie.

Alright you Marvel movie maniacs, ready for another serving of shawarma? Yup, it’s been three years since we saw the very tired assemblage of “Earth’s mightiest heroes” enjoying that tasty, exotic treat, and so it’s time for another monstrous menace to rear its ugly head in order to get “the band” back together. So what have some of the members been doing since 2012. Lessee’, Tony Stark battled some major Ptsd as he got his ticker finally fixed, Thor defended Asgard and re-united (and it felt so good!) with mortal Jane Foster, and Steve Rogers gained a new fighting partner and discovered that a former pal was also “on ice”. Oh, and Shield was disbanded due to an extreme Hydra infestation. But the box office may have yielded even more surprises. It was thought that the singular heroes would lose much of their earning potential after that first team-up.

This weekend, at East Coast Comicon, I got the chance to chat with writer Brandon Montclare (Fearsome Four) and artist Amy Reeder (Madame Xanadu) about their work, especially on their creator owned title Rocket Girl, which is published by Image Comics as well as sci-fi, action scenes, and much more. Rocket Girl is about a teen cop from the future named DaYoung Johansson, who travels back to 1980s New York to prevent an evil corporation from inventing technology to basically take over the world.
Sound on Sight: So why should readers pick up the second arc of Rocket Girl?
Amy Reeder: If you loved the first one, it’s so worth it to keep reading. We had originally planned to make our story five issues, but we were talking and realized that wasn’t enough time to tell this story. You have to develop the characters first so people can...

Chicago – It’s that time of year to figure it out, as 2014 leaks away, and the film year follows suit. Whittling down a list to ten films, after hours of entertainment and provoking of thought, is a fool’s challenge at best. Then who better to do it than Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com.
Best to change it up to first person voice, since I’m writing the actual article. So, I, Patrick McDonald, will attempt to break down the film year into the 10 Best, and my colleagues on HollywoodChicago.com will follow suit in the next several days.
The most difficult slot of any list like this is the 10th position, for it leaves out so many brilliant possibilities for 11th place and onward. At that position are the international films “Bright Days Ahead,” “Force Majeure” and “The Raid 2”; the horror/comic genius of “Dead Snow 2: Red vs.

Adieu au langage - Goodbye to Language
A Works Cited
Introduction
From its bluntly political opening (Alfredo Bandelli's 'La caccia alle streghe': "Always united we win, long live the revolution!") to its hilarious fecal humor and word play—with 3D staging that happily puts to shame James Cameron and every other hack who's tried their hand at it these past several years—Adieu au langage overwhelms us with a deluge of recited texts, music and images, hardly ever bothering to slow down to let us catch our breath. Exhilarating and certainly not surprising—this is the guy who made Puissance de la parole after all!
The release of a new Godard film or video means a new encounter with texts, films and music often familiar from the filmmaker's earlier work—reworked and re-contextualized—as well as new discoveries to be sorted through and identified. This life-long interest in quotation...

Actor Dan Stevens is busy these days making a name for himself in the world of movies and television. In his ten years onscreen, he's already made an impact on audiences all across the world through commanding performances in British favorites like Downton Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, and The Turn of the Screw. He's also proved to be a force to reckon with in several genre projects such as Frankenstein, Dracula, Vamps, and The Tomorrow People. Stevens will soon be seen in the upcoming Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.
In the same weekend, Stevens has two features premiering that couldn't be further apart in the industry of filmmaking. He'll be seen opposite Liam Neeson in the mainstream action vehicle A Walk Among the Tombstones. In some theaters, he'll be right across the halls in another auditorium terrorizing moviegoers in Director Adam Wingard and Writer Simon Barrett's indie thriller The Guest.

Chicago – The essential killing machine to protect the Homeland hasn’t been invented yet. Or has it? Filmmakers Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett combine “The Terminator” with a perfect metaphor for perpetual war in a new release, “The Guest.”
Rating: 4.5/5.0
British actor Dan Stevens plays a gee-whiz returning soldier from the Iraq conflict, dropping in on the household of a dead comrade. Director Wingard and screenwriter Barrett fashion a narrative in which the “guest” becomes a protector, offering solutions to the family’s problems. The packaging of the story is a slick reminder of James Cameron’s “The Terminator” and the Frankenstein myth, paired with a poignant metaphor for the break-it-bought-it mentality of America’s current Middle East circumstances. What seems like the guest’s “solutions” only generates more chaos, which is familiar in this week’s headlines. There are no solutions in fighting this war, only consequences.

Worried your sex life isn't like it looks on TV or in the movies? Don't be. Sex involving food, a piano or gunfire is never as fun as it sounds
When you've been brought up with pop culture as your unofficial guardian, it's easy to assume that you've been lumbered with the world's dullest sex life. You're forever comparing your experiences with those you see on screen, and you beat yourself up when you inevitably fall short.
For instance, not one single person has ever attempted to stab me to death with a pickaxe mid-coitus, like Sharon Stone did to that poor chump at the start of Basic Instinct. No union of mine has ever ended with my partner shooting a baddie in the chest on a moving train at the point of orgasm, like Cindy Crawford did in Fair Game. Nor, to my eternal annoyance, have I ever been...

A lot has changed since Alan Jones from Total Film coined the term Splat Pack referring to a group of gory movie makers who sought to stretch the boundaries of what would be considered acceptable in an R rated film. The sea of blood and guts that rolled across the cinema screen starting in 2002 gradually pulled back to low tide. PG-13 became the new R rating once again and the MPAA decided to pull itself up by its bootstraps to enforce its code. For the Splat Pack, originally consisting of Rob Zombie, Eli Roth (the Frank Sinatra of the Pack according to Quentin Tarantino), James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Robert Rodriquez (added later by association), Greg McLean, Neil Marshall, Alexadre Aja and Darren Lynn Bousman, filmmaking has gone as usual, and each has made a substantial contribution to the horror genre in a positive way, testing the limits of our stomach...

A brilliant performance by Michael Douglas illuminates an affectionate and funny portrait of the flamboyant entertainer
Liberace was a fabulously rich, self-created midwesterner, the child of humble immigrant parents known for his extravagant lifestyle and vulgar tastes, as well as his worship of the American dream and the mystery in which he was wrapped. He was in effect a gay Jay Gatsby. His life was not, however, tragic, that is until his death of an Aids-related illness at 67, and he can be considered a success in that he achieved the acclaim and celebrity he had always dreamed of, and he died believing that he had taken the secret of his homosexuality to the grave.

Aimlessly Devoted To You: Reeder Culls More Stars and Less Sense for Sophomore Film
More proof that horror as a genre has been hedged out of midnight movie programming in favor of meandering strangeness is The Rambler, the sophomore feature of Calvin Lee Reeder. Rather than expanding on the mindf*ck bizarro-world shtick that characterized his polarizing 2011 debut, The Oregonian, Reeder seems more eager than ever to agitate, confound, and blow through our conditioned notions of film narrative. Fans of his first film can rejoice, but the rest of us should be praying for the return of David Lynch. Films by directors such as Reeder, who is obviously influenced by the likes of the grand master himself, only highlight how genius someone like Lynch is at making the grisly and bizarre as compelling as it is incomprehensible.

Don't worry, if you haven't seen any Death Race movies yet, you won't have trouble following Death Race 3: Inferno. But if you haven't seen the one that started it all, Roger Corman's Death Race 2000, then you're doing something wrong with your life. Anyways, Death Race 2 director Roel Reiné and writer Tony Giglio are back for part three, as well as actors Luke Goss, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, and Tanit Phoenix. Find out how Universal's Blu-ray measures up after the jump. The 2008 Death Race is a prequel to the 1975 original, with Jason Statham taking on the role of pre-David Carradine Frankenstein. 2010's Death Race 2 is a prequel to the Statham one, showing how the masked-persona of Frankenstein is created. In that one Luke Goss plays Lucas, a driver for the mob who's sent to Terminal Island. He competes in the Death Race, does well, then...

Director: Roel Reine. Writers: Tony Giglio, Paul W.S. Anderson, Tony Giglio and Paul W.S. Anderson. Cast: Luke Goss, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, Dougray Scott, Fred Koehler, and Tanit Phoenix. The Death Race series of films are turning into a bit of a franchise. The original, starring David Carridine, came out way back in 1975. Then, Paul W. S. Anderson remade the original in 2008. The remake starred a very angry Jason Statham. Since 2008, the lead role of stunt driver Frankenstein has been played by the soft-spoken Luke Goss. Director Roel Reine has made the latest two sequels: Death Race 2 (2010) and the film reviewed here, Death Race: Inferno (2013). Reine's latest is his best to date. Reine is perfecting the action film with his frenetic directing style. Meanwhile, this second sequel blends genres. The action genre is prominent, but there are elements of romance and the thriller genre here, as well. Overall, Death Race: Inferno...

I’ll be honest, I completely forgot Roel Reiné was going ahead with another Death Race after already presenting a horrid sequel (Death Race 2) to an averagely enjoyable B-Movie (Death Race), but low and behold here I am writing my review of Death Race 3: Boobs – um, I mean, Death Race 3: Inferno. Seriously though, I thought the above picture was appropriate because half the bloody movie was spent with a camera focused on Tanit Phoenix’s cleavage, only to pull away when a car blew up or someone died. Exploitation is one thing, but I mean c’mon, even I can admit the sexuality was laughably overplayed – and I’m a dude.
Here’s the thing though – Death Race 2 was an unnecessary and slobbish sequel to a B-Movie only hardcore genre junkies enjoyed, literally building up to the final conflict only to abruptly end the film and...

The Death Race franchise is an interesting anomaly. While Paul W.S. Anderson’s first picture got a theatrical release in 2008, the rest of the franchise has been destined for straight-to-dvd releases. You’d think the quality of the pictures would drop, but instead they’ve only increased. A lot of that has to do with Luke Goss’ physically intimidating, yet likable take on Frankenstein, the driver trying to win his freedom. Death Race 3: Inferno marks the second outing for Goss as the character, and we had a chance to sit down with him exclusively and discuss the franchise and how much ass he can kick, both hand-to-hand and inside a car. Death Race 3: Inferno arrives on DVD and Blu-ray today courtesy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and to get you fiends out there pumped up, Dread Central recently caught up with the man behind the Frankenstein mask, Luke Goss.
In this third Death Race flick, we find Goss' character, Carl Lucas, once again getting the royal screwjob but this time by the douchebag owner of a South African prison named Niles York (Dougray Scott), who will stop at nothing to ensure that Frankenstein doesn't win the newest Death Race through the dangerous streets and terrains of the unforgiving Kalahari Desert.
Directed by Roel Reiné, Death Race 3 also stars Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Tanit Phoenix, Robin Shou and Fred Koehler. At the recent press day for the sequel, we spoke to Goss about what was different for him this time around while reprising his role as Frankenstein and heard more about...

Nothing is more exciting than a fight to the death and with the release of Death Race 3: Inferno, on Blu-ray and DVD from 4th February, this has never been truer. Winner of four death races, Carl Lucas (Luke Goss) finds himself just one victory away from earning freedom for himself and his pit crew, but organisers and prison wardens are changing the track and the rules.

Death Race 3: Inferno
Stars: Luke Goss, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Dougray Scott, Tanit Phoenix, Fred Koehler, Robin Shou | Written by Tony Giglio | Directed by Roel Reine
Universal have made quite a stock in trade of taking some of their fan-favourite franchises and cranking out straight to DVD sequels: Darkman, Tremors, The Scorpion King, American Pie hell – even the The Land Before Time series! One of their best current straight to DVD franchises is Death Race… Now in it’s third incarnation, the series is, in this reviewers humble opinion, actually one of the best low-budget action franchises around and despite any misgivings you may have, this third film keeps up the quality.
A sequel to the prequel, helmed once again by Dutch director Roel Reine – who directed the previous film in the franchise; and who seems to be specialising in directing Dtv sequels having lensed The Marine 2, Death Race 2...

For a straight to DVD franchise, the Death Race series is shaping up to be something quite impressive.
The second movie, wittily entitled Death Race 2 was actually a far better movie than the Paul Ws Anderson remake of the 1975 Roger Corman produced Paul Bartel directed original that came before it. The trick was it told a compelling story with a beginning, middle and ending and shot the action scenes with style without feeling like the camera was on a bungee rope whilst having an epileptic fit. Pwsa may be able to frame a nice visual but his genre narratives always seem to lack a satisfactory final act and embrace style often mistaking it for substance.
With Death Race 2, Luke Goss’s main character of a getaway driver who becomes a convict/superstar had a definite arc which paid off nicely come the ending. The second film’s director...

Debuting directly on Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand next week, Death Race 3: Inferno is set in the universe of Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race , itself inspired by Roger Corman's cult classic Death Race 2000 . Starring Luke Goss, Danny Trejo, Tanit Phoenix, Fred Koehler, Robin Shou with Ving Rhames and Dougray Scott, the sequel is directed by Roel Reiné ( Death Race 2 ). Inferno finds Carl "Frankenstein" Lucas (Goss) with just one race left to go before he earns his freedom. He soon learns, however, that the first-ever desert course will take him straight through South Africa.s Kalahari Desert and will pit him against some of the deadliest racers he's ever faced. I liked Death Race 3 about as much as I enjoyed Death Race 2, and I have two theories on why stuff like this happens to an intelligent person who can plainly recognize sloppy, low-budget filmmaking when he sees it:
A. When a genre movie is produced directly for the video market, a seasoned viewer cannot help but lower their expectations a little. This makes them a little happier because they spent less money, and it may make them a little more charitable towards low-budget components like wooden acting, cheap sets, or chintzy special effects.
B. When a group of filmmakers are given a limited budget, relatively free rein, and a goal to make a simplistically entertaining action sequel ... sometimes fun things can happen.
That's not to imply that Death Race 3 ever comes close to transcending its "made for DVD" lineage, but to say that, within the realm of what it's shooting for,...

Like racing to the death? Like clips? Then you’re in luck, buckaroo, because here are five clips from the direct-to-dvd action sequel “Death Race 3: Inferno”. Yes, it’s basically more of the same, but if you’re a fan of that, I guess that won’t be much of an issue, will it? Roel Reine, who directed the last sequel, returns to take the reins once again for “Inferno”. If I’m correct, this is a direct sequel to the last movie, but still a prequel to the first big-budget movie with Jason Statham. Probably. Does it really matter? Luke Goss talks about returning as Carl "Luke" Lucas in Death Race 3: Inferno, arriving on Blu-ray and DVD January 22
10 years ago, the thought of a straight-to-dvd franchise would have probably gotten you laughed out of any meeting in Hollywood. Today, modest theatrical hits such as Wrong Turn, The Scorpion King, and even The Lost Boys have been given new life. The 2008 action-thriller Death Race is another one of these success stories, spawning Death Race 2 in 2011 and the upcoming Death Race 3: Inferno, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD January 22. I recently had the chance to speak with Luke Goss, who returns as Carl "Luke" Lucas (aka Frankenstein), reprising his role from Death Race 2. Take a look at what he had to say about taking another deadly ride as Luke.
This is your second time around as Carl Lucas. Are you continually exploring new aspects of the character each time around?...
