Outdoor movie screenings and Los Angeles seem to go hand-in-hand.

The city has no shortage of venues to catch a movie under the stars, as several outdoor screening series spend the summer taking over iconic L.A. landmarks.

Having become a Hollywood staple, it’s hard to scroll through social media in the summer without seeing at least one picture taken at Cinespia screening at the iconic Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Meanwhile, Street Food Cinema offers screenings at several venues including Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades and The Autry Museum, located inside Griffith Park.

Whether you’re looking for a fun night out with friends or a family friendly summer activity, there are a slew of screenings around L.A. Check out some of them below.

The Josh Ruben-directed, Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy-written feature follows a pair of co-workers in Seattle who are pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day. When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes, they’re mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. The duo are forced to spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.

Republic Pictures picked up distribution rights to Heart Eyes excluding the U.S. and Canada.

Landon and Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks are producing. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone are EPs with Murphy and Mel Turner.

Gigi Zumbado

The cast also includes Gigi Zumbado. Zumbado’s previous credits include Kenya Barris’ multi-cam comedy Unrelated and recurring roles on ABC’s Promised Land and Fox’s 9-1-1. Zumbado stars opposite Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff in the indie feature The Price We Pay.

Brewster has starred in the $6 billion plus grossing Fast & Furious franchise as Mia Torretto. Her feature credits include Simulant alongside Sam Worthington and Simu Liu, the horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, the cult classic D.E.B.S., the sci-fi horror The Faculty, the drama The Invisible Circus, The Integrity of Joseph Chambers, Hooking Up, Random Acts of Violence, North of Hell, American Heist, Annapolis and Who Invited Charlie?. At the D.E.B.S. screening – which not only coincides with the 20th anniversary of the movie but also Pride Month – Meagan Good, who played leader Max, said, “This film, for me, was an opportunity to do something different. And then it became something where, now when people come up to me and they say, ‘Oh, I loved this movie’ or ‘this movie really inspired me’ or ‘made me feel seen,’ it wasn’t just an opportunity to do something different. It was an opportunity to be a part of something that’s important and fantastic.”

Sara Foster, who played fellow squad gal Amy, also noted just how special D.E.B.

After 20 years Mia, the D.E.B.S. are back together again and teasing a potential (not-so-secret) mission.

The Los Angeles based screening org Cinespia understands that and for the last 22 years, founder John Wyatt and his team have been bringing people together for outdoor showings of classic films every summer at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Pride, “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?,” “Rocky” on July 4th with fireworks, and many more, but this past Saturday’s presentation of the 2007 Beatles musical “Across the Universe” had an extra special treat for guests. Star Evan Rachel Wood was there to introduce the film via video message and offered some fascinating tidbits on making it and the struggle getting it released, as well as the impact it had on her life and career.

Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls certainly pulls from the aesthetic and narrative party bags of noir and road movies. It even indulges the pleasures of high lesbian camp as two friends are drawn into a government-connected conspiracy. But to call it pastiche, a term that could be handily affixed to any number of films by the Coen brothers, is inadequate here given the rollicking, casual, intimate nature of Drive-Away Dolls’s relationship to its generic forebearers. In the classic queer punk tradition of Bruce Labruce, John Waters, and Gregg Araki, Coen’s film knows when to pay homage and when to move to its own rhythm.

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.

The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The intention of Sheroes seems incredibly clear: To make a fun, female-centric action comedy. While Sheroes has potential, it feels like an interesting idea that never came to fruition but was greenlit as a film anyway. Must the film focus primarily on a gay storyline, or can it feature strong lesbian characters doing something entirely different than just being lesbians? Is subtext enough, or must the sapphic be explicit? How much cinephile wrath will rain down on us for the absence of a certain recent Oscar winner?

Compared to the stand-outs of queer television, the best lesbian movies have relatively little time to convey their perspective on the vast, varied, (sometimes) vaginal lesbian experience. And yet, ultimately, the best lesbian films honor not just their own perspectives, but also the glory and traditions of all of queer cinema. The original erotic tale of the undead, which was directed by Tony Scott, co-starred Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve, was released in 1983 and became an instant cult classic due to its lavish, stylized appearance in a time when Gothic fashion and lifestyles were just starting to come to the fore. Angela Robinson has signed a multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group

Under the terms of the agreement, the director and writer of the GLAAD Media Award and Saturn Award-nominated independent drama “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” will develop and create original scripted television programming for all Warner Bros. platforms, which includes on-demand and streaming services like WarnerMedia’s HBOMax, premium and basic cable channels and broadcast networks. Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed, but sources say that the deal is valued in the eight figure range.

Under the rich three-year pact, believed to be in the eight-figure range, Robinson will develop and create original scripted television programming for all platforms: on-demand/streaming services, including WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, premium/pay and basic cable channels, and the broadcast networks.

The sought-after multi-hyphenated is coming off an overall deal at Paramount TV Studios. Bringing unique, diverse voices to the studio’s talent roster has been a big priority for new Warner Bros. TV Group chairman Channing Dungey.

Much has been made in recent years of the need to support, uplift, and, for the love of God — finance —more women filmmakers, but how many lesbian films have shaken out from all that hand-wringing? It’s heartening to see a woman at the helm of a comic book movie, but when was the last great lesbian rom-com? (Even more pressing: Where is the next one?) As in the struggle for queer liberation, lesbians —and lesbian films — are often an afterthought. That’s one of the many salient points covered in the peppy new documentary, “Dykes, Camera, Action!,” which while offering yet more proof that no one does catchy titles like the queers.

At a breezy 60 minutes, the film has much in common with that other lesbian tradition, the potluck, in terms of the topics it covers. There’s a little o’ this, a little o’ that, plus plenty of vegan and gluten-free options.

The 2018 Outfest Film Festival, the largest Lgbtq film festival in Los Angeles, will feature its most inclusive lineup of filmmakers with narrative and documentary features that reflect a growing sense of activism in the Trump era.

Organizers of Outfest, which which kicks off Thursday night, are celebrating a record number of entries this year by filmmakers of color, women and transgender directors. Two-thirds of films screening at the festival are from these underrepresented groups, a new milestone, said Outfest director of programming Lucy Mukerjee. Last year, 50% of the films at the festival were directed by women.

As we gear up for an awards season ripe with many quality queer films, it’s important to remember smaller successes who may get lost in the shuffle. Lgbt-themed film festivals Outfest and Frameline kicked off the summer, while New York’s own NewFest wrapped up last week. It’s always thrilling to see a gay film get awards attention, like the kind lavished on Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name” and foreign language contender “Bpm (Beats Per Minute).” But it’s been a banner year for nuanced queer films across the board, and especially ones from queer-identified filmmakers.

From up-and-comers making splashy debuts, to longtime favorites who have stepped up their game, the filmmakers on this list represent a varied swath of not only the Lgbt spectrum, but vastly different artistic styles. That means they have the potential to reach different audiences — and open up perspectives across demographics.

If you saw Wonder Woman this summer -- and the record-setting $800 million worldwide box office indicates a lot of people saw Wonder Woman this summer -- then you know the story of how Diana, Princess of Themyscira, became the superhero Wonder Woman, protector of mankind. Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected),” which debuted in competition in Cannes and scored fresh acclaim at the New York Film Festival, is a day-and-date Netflix release, so no numbers are reported. It’s likely that the family comedy starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman, who all did substantial press, played well enough at high-end theaters in New York and L.A. to take a bite out of its competitors.

Despite the lack of reported numbers, a glance at the pre-buy seating chart for the Landmark theater in West Los Angeles for Sunday shows in a theater with over 100 seats that are close to sellouts hours ahead of time suggests a weekend total that might be roughly $20,000 (roughly).That’s impressive for a film that any Netflix subscriber can see at home.

Cleverly packaged as a straightforward drama about personal desires and professional accomplishments, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” is a hugely satisfying alternative to often cheap excuses for feminist movies in Hollywood. DC Comic’s iconic female superhero Wonder Woman has been generating buzz with the upcoming Gal Gadot-starring film due out next year. Then last week, Greg Rucka, writer of the reborn Wonder Woman comics revealed that the heroine is bisexual. But now, the story of Diana Prince’s creator is getting the spotlight in the upcoming indie drama “Professor Marston & The Wonder Women.”

Per Deadline, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired the worldwide rights from Topple Productions and Boxspring Entertainment. Directed and written by Angela Robinson, the film stars Luke Evans as Dr. William Moulton Marston, a Harvard psychologist and inventor who created Wonder Woman in 1941. Rebecca Hall will portray his wife Elizabeth, also a psychologist and inventor, and Bella Heathcote will play Olive Byrne, a former student of Marston’s and who also shared a polyamorous relationship with the couple.

On March 18th, VH1 is bringing you Erin and Sara Foster‘s Barely Famous, a mocku-docu-something-reality show about two sisters who definitely do not want to be on a reality show.

Take a look at the supertrailer below, and get a feel for not only the harsh look at reality shows you’ll be getting, but also several of the guest stars who will be appearing on the show.

It’s not that this general idea hasn’t come our way before, including in the form of shows like Burning Love, but I don’t think we’ve had quite as blunt an effort that specifically took on the “We’re just famous,” sub-genre.

The CW's “Arrow” has just added a new character from the DC Comics world. Devon Aoki will play Tatsu Yamashiro, aka Katana, in a recurring guest role starting with the show's upcoming third season. True Blood's Kristen Bauer and her "lesbian vampire lover" Rutina Wesley introduced Angela Robinson to give her the Outfest Fusion Achievement Award at the People Of Color Film Festival's Closing Night in Los Angeles last week. The actresses know how great it is to work one-on-one with the out writer of the HBO show, who has also worked on several other TV shows and films you are more than familiar with, including The L Word, D.E.B.S. and Girltrash.

In her speech, Angela discusses being "gay, biracial and a woman" and she tries to serve all of those identities while working in Hollywood.

While we may all be familiar with Outfest, the La-based non-profit dedicated to Lgbt media, this weekend is the 10th annual of Outfest Fusion Lgbt People Of Color Film Festival. Being the only multicultural Lgbt film festival of its kind, the festival includes short and feature films that showcase diversity in the Lgbt community. This year, out writer/director/producer Angela Robinson will receive the Fusion Achievement Award.

AfterEllen jumped on the phone with Robinson earlier this week to talk about being honored as well as her work bringing lesbian characters and stories to various projects she’s worked on like True Blood, Hung and The L Word. We also found out some interesting news on D.E.B.S. as well as some of other projects she’s involved in and just how queer they may be.

Deadline is reporting that Angela Robinson, the co-executive producer of HBO’s "True Blood" and "Hung", has sold an untitled supernatural teen thriller pitch to Paramount.

Robinson, who wrote and directed the film D.E.B.S. and directed Herbie Fully Loaded, will write the script and produce with the Grady Twins’ Dawn Olmstead (exec producer of "Prison Break" and "90 Minutes") and Marti Noxon ("Mad Men" and Fright Night).

D.E.B.S. was actually made twice. First as a short starring Tammy Lynn Michaels, and later as a feature length film with a larger budget and distribution. The latter version came out in 2004 and was just as gay — if not gayer — than the original.

In our first annual Top 50 Lesbian and Bi Characters poll, we asked you to vote for your favorite characters from film, television, and internet shows.

You cast your votes, and now we have the results. Before we reveal the winners, let's take a look at some of the trends that emerged.

Almost all of the characters were from films and television shows that made their debut after the year 2000. A few of the exceptions include Kerry Weaver from ER, and the ass-kicking ladies from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

While most of the characters were from Us productions, a fair amount came from international shows, including our top two characters (from the UK show Skins).

Also notable was the fact that some of your favorite characters, the leads from Xena: Warrior Princess (which ran from 1995-2001) and Idgie Threadgood from the film Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), were never officially presented as lesbian or bisexual.

As 2009 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the people and events that made this the Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. in pop culture.

Luckily for all of us, there was far more information to have mentioned from the last ten years than we could have included in this brief survey. That's why our lists for each year are not intended to be exhaustive, but are instead snapshots of different memorable moments that included the representation of lesbians and bisexual women in film, television, music, literature, comics, sports and the Internet since the year 2000.
