Woody Harrelson Had Four Peculiar Conditions To Star In Zombieland
Image
Released in 2009, "Zombieland" stands out as one of the best horror comedy films out there. Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the film featured Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as four survivors of a zombie apocalypse who embark on a perilous, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt road trip that includes a few notable sequences, including a surprise run-in with comedy icon Bill Murray.

Although Jesse Eisenberg's Columbus serves as the narrator of "Zombieland," Woody Harrelson's Tallahassee is undoubtedly the film's breakout character. The Twinkie-obsessed survivor who finds glee in fending off zombies stands out as one of the most memorable characters in Harrelson's decorated career, and this includes his Emmy-winning turn as Woody Boyd in "Cheers" and three Academy Award-nominated performances. Interestingly enough, Harrelson had four conditions when it came to signing on for the film. While the first...

Why Are Jewish Celebrities in Hollywood So Afraid to Talk About Antisemitism? (Opinion)
Image
I love Jesse Eisenberg.

From his wunderkind roles in Roger Dodger and The Squid and the Whale to his twitchy performances in The Social Network and The End of the Tour — and interviews with me and so many others — he’s always been a jolt of energy. Rarely does a celebrity work so hard to give such an honest answer, or slip in such a hilariously dry joke.

But I’ve been mystified by Jesse Eisenberg too. With A Real Pain — which stands a good chance of winning Oscars for screenplay and supporting actor on Sunday — Eisenberg has made a film about the Holocaust. Yet on the awards circuit he has seemed conspicuously reluctant, to say the least, to utter a word about current antisemitism, steering far from the subject even in long interviews on The Daily Show and Fresh Air.

In fact, he doesn’t even seem to see...

‘Awards Chatter’ Pod: Jesse Eisenberg on ‘A Real Pain,’ Acting vs. Writing and Mark Zuckerberg 2.0
Image
Jesse Eisenberg is the guest on the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. The 41-year-old actor, writer and director is best known for his portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s 2010 masterpiece The Social Network. Fourteen years after receiving an best actor Oscar nomination for that performance, the former child actor is an Oscar nominee again, this time for the original screenplay that he wrote for a 2024 film that he also directed and stars in, A Real Pain.

The semi-autobiographical drama is about two very different cousins — one “successful” but anxious, played by him, the other struggling but charming, played by Kieran Culkin — who travel together to Poland to pay tribute to their beloved late grandmother. It premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where Eisenberg was recognized with the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and at which its U.S. distribution rights were acquired for $10 million by Searchlight,...

The Effects of Lying Review: Family Secrets and Cultural Resonance
Image
“The Effects of Lying” uses a single-day timeline, heightening the dramatic tension of unfolding events. This condensed structure echoes theatrical storytelling, compelling characters into quick and often tumultuous transformations.

The narrative focuses on Naveen, whose meticulously crafted life crumbles under successive revelations, with brief glimpses into other perspectives, like his daughter Simran’s, enriching the emotional landscape.

Packed events create narrative urgency, though they occasionally overwhelm the story, leaving certain character arcs less developed. This fragmented approach echoes family dramas where emotional eruptions trigger introspection. Cultural elements provide meaningful context, revealing tensions between familial traditions and personal aspirations within a British-Asian household.

The father-daughter relationship emerges as a poignant core, anchoring the narrative’s chaos through tender moments that illuminate the delicate threads binding families during turbulent times.

Plot and Storytelling: A Day of Chaos and Consequence

The film “The Effects of Lying” introduces Naveen, a man seemingly satisfied with his suburban,...

The Strange, Sordid History of the Comedy-Musical Golden Globe
Image
The Golden Globes have been honoring comedies since the 1950s and the days of such Billy Wilder gems as The Apartment and Some Like It Hot. But the category — which for the past 60 years has crowned a single winner among comedies and musicals — hasn’t always experienced smooth sailing.

How one defines a comedy — is it punchlines? pratfalls? subtle satire? — has been just one of the issues bedeviling the award. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association began playing even more fast and loose with definitions earlier this century when it increasingly nominated movies that seemed neither particularly funny nor acclaimed, instead using the category to bring popular films and stars into the fold that would otherwise have no way of getting there.

At the moment, the smaller, clubbier HFPA has been disbanded in favor of a larger and more representative group of global journalists. This has cut down on the number of nominated howlers,...

Jesse Eisenberg Thinks Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman Hurt His Career
Image
Life comes at you fast. Once upon a time, actor Jesse Eisenberg wasn't known for anything more than his work as a scrawny character actor in movies like Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale" and Greg Mottola's "Adventureland." In fact, his biggest cause for concern in those days was beating the allegations that he was the same guy who played Napoleon Dynamite. And then "The Social Network" happened, which net him a Best Actor nomination and ultimately set him on track to become the latest actor-turned-writer/director with this year's brilliant "A Real Pain" (which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival).

But one particularly polarizing role may have caused some serious bumps along the way -- his turn as Lex Luthor in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which Eisenberg is now admitting set his career back quite significantly. The refreshingly candid remarks come from a recent...

Why Phoebe Cates Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
For a few years in the '80s, it felt like Phoebe Cates was everywhere in Hollywood. The child of an entertainment-focused family (her dad was a prolific producer of stage and screen), Cates made her on-screen debut in 1982's "Paradise," a controversial film that's best-remembered as a sort of off-brand "Blue Lagoon" story that featured Cates' underage character nude (the actress was 17 at the time of filming). According to Cates' costar Willie Aames, the nudity in question was filmed by body doubles, but the discourse surrounding the movie would inform Cates' place in pop culture before she even came of age.

Cates' most famous roles would come soon after, and by 1994, she would largely be retired from acting entirely. So why did Phoebe Cates leave Hollywood? The answer is hers to share, and interviews she and her family have given both during her on-screen career and after it ended have been pretty enlightening.

Jesse Eisenberg’s Top 7 Performances – Facebook, Zombies, and Dopplegangers
Image
This weekend, Jesse Eisenberg returns to the big screen in A Real Pain. The film, which he wrote, directs, and stars in, follows a man struggling to keep his emotions on check during a trip with his cousin. A Real Pain has drawn considerable praise for Eisenberg’s subdued directing, brilliant writing, and Kiernan Culkin’s livewire performance. It bodes well for Eisenberg, who has been one of indie films darling performers for years. To celebrate his latest career milestone, we’re highlighting seven of his best performances to date.

The Squid and the Whale (2005)

As a young actor, Jesse Eisenberg landed on many radars for his emotional performance in The Squid and the Whale. Told from the perspective of two children struggling with their parent’s divorce, Noah Baumbach gave Eisenberg a role that required incredible pathos. With several standout scenes that could have easily been accused of overacting,...

Jesse Eisenberg Picks Up Indie Star Award at American Film Festival, Talks ‘A Real Pain’: ‘I Wanted to Make an American Indie Film, but in Poland’
Image
Jesse Eisenberg picked up the Indie Star Award at Poland’s American Film Festival and met with the local audience to talk about sophomore directorial effort “A Real Pain.”

“Two years ago, I was finishing the script. You start the very embarrassing process of begging producers to give you money to make it. When they asked me how I’d describe the movie, I told them the same thing: ‘I want to make an American indie film, but in Poland,’” he said.

“I grew up doing American independent films and loving American independent films, but I didn’t want to make another version of this intimate American ‘buddy movie.’ What I was trying to tell these financiers was that there hasn’t been a movie like this, about these two guys exploring their past, but set against the backdrop of this amazing, beautiful country. I cannot think of a better...

Jesse Eisenberg movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Since childhood, Jesse Eisenberg has been a prodigy in the arts. At age seven, he appeared in his first play, and by age 12, he was an understudy on Broadway in a Tennessee Williams drama. At age 16, he began writing screenplays, several of which were optioned by major studios, and by the time he was a high school senior, Eisenberg had landed his first co-starring role in a feature film — 2002’s “Roger Dodger.”

From there, his film career took off, leading to starring roles with filmmakers as diverse as Woody Allen and David Fincher. Eisenberg became a favorite with moviegoers with his comedic skill in such films as “Zombieland,” “Café Society” and “Adventureland.” And then came the critical acclaim with his dramatic performances in 2005’s “The Squid and the Whale,” 2015’s “The End of the Tour,” and particularly Fincher’s 2010 modern classic “The Social Network,” for which Eisenberg received Best Actor nominations from the Oscars,...

Mike Birbiglia Reveals New Project “In The Vein Of ‘Don’t Think Twice’,” The Genesis Of ‘The Old Man And The Pool’ & Why He Isn’t Looking For A Sitcom
Image
With his Emmy-nominated Netflix special The Old Man and the Pool, Mike Birbiglia digs deep into our sense of mortality and meaning, while literally lying on stage in true confessional comedic style and going out with a ‘bang’. Birbiglia has honed his career out of deep honesty and the importance of “sharing secrets”, as his work has traversed such revelatory topics as reluctant fatherhood and terrifying health scares. Looking back at the path that led him to his ‘specials’ specialty, Birbiglia explains his reluctance to venture into sitcom territory, his love of working with This American Life producer Ira Glass with whom he made the film Don’t Think Twice and Sundance hit Sleepwalk With Me, the SNL star who pushed him in college, and the importance of paying it all forward.

‘All Happy Families’ Review: Not All Indie Family Dramedies Are Alike
Image
“All happy families are alike,” claims the immortal first sentence of Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”; “each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” And while jaded viewers may opine that all indie dramedies about dysfunctional families in the “Little Miss Sunshine” or “The Squid and the Whale” mold are alike, writer-director Haroula Rose’s “All Happy Families” suggests the genre has moved in a more grounded direction. Whether that’s ultimately a better direction remains to be seen.

The focal point of this particular family is Graham (Josh Radnor), an aspiring screenwriter/actor whose older brother Will (Rob Huebel) stars on a hugely popular (and seemingly terrible) TV series. As Will surprises Graham by flying from Los Angeles to Chicago for an unannounced visit to the childhood home they bought together, their mother Sue (Becky Ann Baker) is trying to figure out how to react to her former...

“I would consider playing him again”: Jesse Eisenberg Has Always Been Open to Return for a Sequel to His Most Iconic Billionaire Role – It’s Not Lex Luthor
Image
Jesse Eisenberg has made a career out of playing socially awkward characters who find themselves in an extraordinary situation. The actor hit the peak of this trope when he was cast as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s The Social Network. The film was universally acclaimed and was nominated in eight categories at the Oscars, winning three.

Amidst screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who adapted the first film from the book The Accidental Billionaires, talking about working on a sequel to the film, actor Jesse Eisenberg had expressed his enthusiasm at getting another stab at playing the billionaire long ago. However, he was not that hopeful about playing another billionaire he had played before – Lex Luthor.

The 12 Best Tennis Movies, from ‘Strangers on a Train’ to ‘Challengers’
Image
Is 2024 the year of tennis? At the movies and on our TV screens, the answer might be yes. This spring brings two major releases that both heavily feature racquets, green courts, and sweaty tennis action. The first was Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall,” a limited series based on “Big Little Lies” scribe Liane Moriarty’s novel about the family of two married tennis pros (played by Annette Bening and Sam Neill) who are forced to contend with the mysterious and sudden disappearance of their matriarch. Even more anticipated is “Challengers,” a Luca Guadagnino film that arrives — after strike-related delays — this April to tell the steamy story of a tennis coach (Zendaya) caught between her husband and an old flame as the two men go head to head in a Challenger tennis event.

These two releases mark the biggest Spring for tennis-related media in…possibly ever. Which isn’t necessarily hard...

‘Barbie’: Read The Screenplay For Greta Gerwig’s Global Juggernaut
Image
Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Barbie, a cultural phenomenon that became 2023’s highest-grossing film at $1.45 billion worldwide. It’s also got eight Oscar nominations, including for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s screenplay, which AMPAS put in the Adapted category despite other bodies — including the Writers Guild — clocking it as Original.

Either way, Barbie’s a doll, and the script boasts one of the most talked-about monologues in recent memory, delivered by America Ferrara’s Gloria in the film.

The story centers on Margot Robbie’s “stereotypical” Barbie, whose every day is the best day ever, until a glitch occurs which sends her to the real world (accompanied by Ryan Gosling’s Ken). There, they discover truths they’d never imagined — some hard, some misguided and some very poignant — before heading back to Barbie Land to set things straight.

Sundance 2024 Review: A Real Pain, Jesse Eisenberg's Poignant Comedy-Drama
Image
Over more than two decades, Jesse Eisenberg has been a singular onscreen presence, delivering a series of memorable, memorably idiosyncratic performances, including an early standout role in Noah Baumbach’s semi-autobiographical comedy-drama, The Squid and the Whale, in 2005 and an Oscar-nominated turn five years later as Facebook’s controversial co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg, in David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Network. It as only a matter of time before Eisenberg, long interested in writing and directing -- he reportedly wrote his first screenplay in high school -- would turn his talents toward writing and directing films of his own. Eisenberg’s feature-length debut as writer-director, When You Finish Saving the World, an adaptation of an audio drama he wrote two years earlier, premiered at the 2022 Sundance...

Oscars 2025: Awards contenders from the 2024 Sundance Film Festival
Image
Back at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Celine Song’s debut feature, “Past Lives,” premiered to rave reviews and early speculation about its awards chances. That turned out to be prescient. One year later, “Past Lives” is a 2024 Oscars Best Picture nominee, while Song is a nominee for Best Original Screenplay. So with the 2024 Sundance Film Festival at its end, what better time than now to speculate about what next year’s “Past Lives” will be? Whether anything on 2024’s Sundance roster can scale those heights is up for debate, but plenty of promising titles could compete for acting and screenplay prizes. The documentary lineup was robust this year, which makes sense: Six of the last 10 Best Documentary Feature Film winners got their start at Sundance.

Below is a sample of Sundance highlights that could be award contenders this time next year.

Oscar predictions: 5 races that are too close to call
Image
A whopping 3,000 readers have already made their Oscar predictions at Gold Derby. While many of the races look like landslides — an incredible 94% of our readers forecast nominations leader “Oppenheimer” winning Best Picture, for example — there are a number of incredibly tight races. Here are the top five that are still up in the air.

This is the closest match-up in the above-the-line categories according to our earliest predictions with a two-person contest between Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”): 55% of readers pick the former and 43% the latter. Our experts and editors are tipping the scales in Giamatti’s favor, pushing him into first place in the odds. The winter precursor awards that we have seen so far make this a tough category to feel out: both men won Golden Globes for their roles — Murphy in Drama and Giamatti in Comedy — but Giamatti pulled off a...

Top 20 greatest living actors never nominated for an Oscar
Image
Jim Carrey once called himself the “Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes” after his second straight victory with the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2000 (for “Man on the Moon” following “The Truman Show”). He could win with that group but somehow couldn’t impress Oscar voters. And he’s not the only actor in that situation. Our photo gallery features Carrey among the 20 actors who’ve never been nominated for an Oscar.

Even Academy Awards hosts such as Billy Crystal and Steve Martin haven’t been noticed by Oscar voters other than seeing them perform on the ceremony stage. They have both received critics awards and Golden Globe nominations in their long careers. Martin has at least received an honorary Oscar, but alas no individual nomination for either one throughout their careers.

Other Golden Globe film winners have included Richard Gere (“Chicago”) and Hugh Grant (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”). Our...

Oscars: ‘Barbie’ steps into Best Adapted Screenplay Top 5 after switching categories
Image
The Best Adapted Screenplay category at the 2024 Oscars has gained some pink heels.

The Writers Branch executive committee of the academy recently determined that Warner Bros.’ box office behemoth “Barbie,” written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, was not eligible for the Best Original Screenplay race because it was based on the popular Mattel dolls. Variety first reported the news. That prompted a category switcheroo in Gold Derby’s predictions center in early January, and now the script has officially cracked into our Top 5 in the adapted race.

As of this writing, “Barbie’s” four strongest contenders in Best Adapted Screenplay look to be “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan, “Poor Things” by Tony McNamara, “Killers of the Flower Moon” by Eric Roth & Martin Scorsese, and “American Fiction” by Cord Jefferson. Also watch out for potential spoilers like “The Zone of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer and “All of Us Strangers” by Andrew Haigh...

When official Oscar nomination voting opens Thursday, Jan. 11, eligible voting members of the branch will only be able to cast votes for the script written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach in adapted screenplay.

The film tells the story of Barbie (Margot Robbie), who suffers an identity crisis in Barbie World, leading her on a quest with her beau Ken (Ryan Gosling) to the real world to seek the answers regarding her existence.

Greta Gerwig Compares Her ‘Barbie’ Directing Duties to Driving a Stolen Car: ‘Don’t Tell Them Where We’re Going’
Greta Gerwig
With months of hindsight now at her disposal, Greta Gerwig is looking back at the runaway summer success of “Barbie” with an appreciation for the independence she was able to wield at the helm of her first big-budget Hollywood film.

Gerwig, in a long-form interview with Vanity Fair, said the key was plowing through with blinders on, blissfully ignorant of her studio surroundings.

“Honestly, there was nothing but fear around all of it from the outset,” Gerwig said. “You’re dealing with a topic that is already so filled with opinions. But the trick is to say, ‘Well, instead of trying to tiptoe around it, what if we just stepped in it?’ And the whole undertaking was definitely like ‘Drive it like you stole it.’ Go, go, go. Don’t tell them, don’t tell them where we’re going.”

Where they went was well north of $1.4 billion at the box office,...

Greta Gerwig on Writing ‘Barbie’ for Ryan Gosling and Watching Kingsley Ben-Adir ‘Ascend the Throne’ in His Final Scene: ‘Get This to Whoever Is Making James Bond’
Image
There may not be a funnier moment on screen this year than when Ryan Gosling yells “sublime!” off-screen in Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar box office smash “Barbie.”

That’s why Variety Awards Circuit Podcast had a pressing question that needed answering from the filmmaker herself: Who gets the credit for this brilliant moment?

“Ryan had the idea of [Ken] having a private moment that she [Barbie] can hear,” Gerwig reveals. “Because, of course, there’s no walls or privacy in Barbie Land. And then I will give myself credit, I came up with ‘sublime.’ I kept thinking, what’s the funniest word? I kept going back to ‘sublime.’ It’s the oddest word. But I let him do lots of things, because, why not? He did some very long sentences that he screamed. One was ‘Finally! My rainbow after the storm!’”

There are countless admirable and brilliant moments just like that throughout the Warner Bros. meta-comedy.

10 Terrible Movies Disowned By Their Own Directors
Image
There has been a myriad of bad films since the medium's inception, but some movies have performed so badly that their own directors have gone so far as to disown their creations. Directors taking their names off a movie's credits isn't something new. However, it's hard to imagine creating something and then hating it so much that one doesn't even want their name attached. This has been the case with a number of movies over the years, and even a few well-known directors have turned against their own art, publicly criticizing the film in question and trying to create as much distance from it as possible.

Since there are so many factors that go into making a feature film, that inevitably means there are plenty of ways to fail in producing a satisfying finished product. Some movies suffer from pacing issues or a lack of onscreen chemistry from the cast...

10 Best Indie Films Of The 2000s
Image
Studios and larger production companies dominate the film industry, but they don't always create the best movies. The independent film market has been rising since the 1940s thanks to the creation of the Society of Independent Motion Picture Producers. While independent filmmaking has been around for decades, indie filmmakers truly found their stride in the 2000s.

Between well-known and first-time filmmakers, new and exciting stories started popping up everywhere. Producers and independent production companies became more willing to take risks thanks to the commercial success of indie films from the '80s and '90s. Though comedy primarily dominated the world of indie films prior, the 2000s took chances on dramas, coming-of-age films, and even thrillers.

Barbie Director Reveals Battle With Mattel Over Script Process
Image
According to a new report, the script process for Barbie involved some disagreements between co-writers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and Mattel. Based on the iconic Mattel toy, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll as she is expelled from Barbie Land and embarks on a journey to the Real World. The upcoming film marks Gerwig's biggest movie yet following Lady Bird and Little Women.

As the Barbie release date inches closer, a new report from The New Yorker reveals that Mattel was initially hesitant about Gerwig and Baumbach taking on scripting duties. Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Films, was apparently keen on seeing a preview of what the script would feature, which Gerwig and Baumbach disagreed with as they felt this would hinder their ability to explore different creative avenues. Jeremy Barber, Gerwig's and Baumbach's agent at U.T.A., had a blunt response to Mattel. Check out...

‘Our Son’ Review: Luke Evans and Billy Porter Turn a Gay Divorce and Custody Battle Into Same Old Same Old
Image
Does it count as representational progress when a drama about the fissures that destroy a gay marriage and the ensuing fight for primary custody of the couple’s child is just as bland as any heteronormative version of that sad story?

Bill Oliver’s Our Son boasts solid lead performances from Luke Evans and Billy Porter as the dads whose life together has hit a wall, plus a capable supporting cast stacked with talented theater actors. The movie is tasteful and restrained and sensitively handled at every step. But unless you count one of the men finding post-breakup sexual distraction wrapped around a slinky club kid named Solo (Isaac Powell), there’s too little here to distinguish the film from endless other broken-family dramas that have gone before.

There’s even less to put it on a level with standouts like Kramer vs. Kramer, The Squid and the Whale or Marriage Story.

Why Adventureland Is One of the Best Coming-of-Age Movies
Image
The coming-of-age story is one of the most quintessential narratives of great movies. While many of the best teen-centric stories were told in John Hughes’ string of hit films in the 1980s, the past few decades have contributed such modern classics as Moonlight, Lady Bird, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, and Booksmart. While there have been many other great recent projects, one that tends to fall under the radar is Adventureland from director Greg Mottola. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg in one of his best performances as the graduate student James Brennan, who has to scrap his ambition to travel the sights of Europe in order to take a summer job at a local amusement park. He falls in love with his new coworker Em Lewin (Kristen Stewart), but fears that she will end up with the older musician and park maintenance man Mike Connell (Ryan Reynolds).
