‘Red Shoes’ Korean Animation Steps out in Post-Coronavirus Theaters

South Korean animation “Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs” opens Wednesday in some 300 cinemas in France, giving the fairy tale derivative a further chance demonstrate its resistant to coronavirus.

Using the fairy tale format to tell a story about the true meaning of beauty, the film was written and directed by Hong Sung Ho, with Jin Kim credited as the film’s animation director. Its English-language version attracted top tier voice talent including Chloë Grace Moretz, Sam Claflin, and Gina Gershon.

In Australia and New Zealand, where it is handled by Rialto Distribution, it has been on release since July 2, 2020 and amassed over $1 million to date. In Spain, it was released on July 3 through 214 screens and topped the box office for two weeks. By the end of the July 17-19 weekend, it had amassed EUR494,000.

Nfdc Film Bazaar’s Work-in-Progress Lab has announced its selection in Fiction and Documentary categories.

The Work-in-Progress (Wip) Lab gives filmmakers a chance to have their rough-cut feature-length films viewed by an eminent panel of international advisers. These advisers have a one-on-one discussion with the filmmaker with an intention to help the filmmaker achieve an accomplished final cut of the film.

Nfdc Film Bazaar 2014 will be held from November 20-24 in Goa Mariott Resort.

I remember I introduced this back in 2006, but there was little to no news for the following two years. Korean animation, at least in its feature form, still has a hard time leaving first gear, in many ways because of cultural issues (the same reason space operas or straightforward Sf rarely do well). Yet, the talent is certainly there, as the few efforts we get every year rarely end up being stinkers, and there’s even the occasional gem a la 아치와 씨팍 (Aachi & Ssipak), or the flawed but immensely beautiful 원더풀 데이즈 (Wonderful Days). 오디션 (Audition) adapts manhwa kingpin Cheon Gye-Young’s bestseller, about a young man who has to find some old friends (all of immense musical talent, obviously) and form Korea’s “greatest band” to inherit his father’s empire.
