"Pipo" was the working title of the series when it was first pitched to Noggin. It was changed to Oobi when it was discovered an Italian clothing line was called Pipo. Also the two "O"s are a reference to the character's eyes.
The puppeteers were required to get manicures prior to production. They (except Grampu) also had to shave their arms if they were portraying a child character.
Reruns of the original shorts stopped airing in 2007 when Noggin ended its relationship with Sesame Workshop. Since the shorts were created when all of the channel's programs were co-productions of Nickelodeon and the Workshop, it is unknown which company has the broadcast rights for them.
When the series transitioned from two minute shorts to 11 minute episodes, Kako and Uma were given a hat and bow, respectively, to distinguish them from Oobi.
Much like 1, rue Sésame (1969)'s international co-productions, a localized version of Oobi was filmed in Iran under the title "Dasdasi".
