The British mockumentary sitcom The Office remains one of the most influential comedies ever produced. Not only did the series enjoy a stellar three-season run which culminated in an 8.5 IMDb rating, it also inspired a range of spinoffs, including the Steve Carrell version.

Valuable documentary on the vigilant genius whose highly coloured 70s and 80s images revealed the white working class as never before
The beguiling work of English photographer Martin Parr is the subject of this brief, but thoroughly enjoyable study which sets out to introduce his extraordinary work, particularly the fierce brilliance of his colour images in the 70s and 80s celebrating the white working class on holiday.
Parr is an inspired combination of seaside-postcard artist Donald McGill and Alan Bennett, with a bit of American street photographer Vivian Maier, and a sliver of Diane Arbus, although the grotesques in which Arbus specialised are not what Parr has in mind. Everyone here is at pains to emphasise that Parr is never cruel or mocking, and, yes, it’s quite true. But as a real artist, Parr naturally has what Graham Greene called the splinter of ice in his heart. He knows...

"Gladiator II" spoilers follow.
"Gladiator II" arrives in theaters this weekend (read our review), almost a quarter of a century after its predecessor won the Academy Award for Best Picture following its big screen release in 2000. Considering the "Gladiator" sequel that we almost got instead, the existence of this follow-up in the hands of director Ridley Scott again feels like nothing short of a miracle, even if the movie itself doesn't quite measure up to the greatness achieved by the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. You probably know the rest of that heroic diatribe, perfectly delivered by Russell Crowe, by heart.
Anyway, "Gladiator II" acts as a quasi-remake and legacy-quel, focusing on a grown up Lucius, the young boy played by Spencer Treat Clark, the son of Roman Empress Lucilla,...

From Garth Marenghi to The Mighty Boosh, Paddington’s blockbuster success stands on a TV comedy golden age and the early work of Paul King.
“The very gates of Hell” might not be the first place you’d look to find Paddington’s origin story. But with Paul King as director and future ursine-alumni Alice Lowe and Richard Ayoade on the stage, the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe run of Garth Marenghi’s Fright Knight proved not to be a half-bad training ground for the man behind the most successful comedy franchise of the last decade.
Pitched as a gory and melodramatic spoof of Stephen King-style scares, the show centred around Matthew Holness’ fictional horror author, Marenghi, and his inspired telling of another writer’s fight to rescue his muse from the forces of darkness. Fright Knight was nominated for a Perrier award. The follow-up, 2001’s Netherhead, won one. TV beckoned, and soon King,...

British TV shows often get darker and weirder than most mainstream American shows, and some of them are creepy enough to keep their audiences awake at night. Most "creepy" shows tend to fall under the horror genre, but British comedies can be just as unsettling. Without necessarily being horror comedies, it's possible to create a dark and tense atmosphere while still being hilarious.
Some of Britain's best writers, including Chris Morris, Charlie Brooker and even Roald Dahl, have made creepy shows with plenty of humor. While America also has some similar shows, it's rare for a mainstream show to feature such a perfect blend between darkness and humor. British networks seem more willing to commission all sorts of creepy shows, including horrors, comedies, and detective dramas.

Lewis Carroll's 1871 fable "Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There" features a notable scene wherein the young titular protagonist runs across a pair of whimsically dunderheaded identical twins while lost in an alternate dimension. The characters are named Tweedledee and Tweedledum and are based on numerous 18th-century folk poems variously attributed to John Byron, John Pope, and Jonathan Swift. In an early epigram by Byron, the two characters agree to have a battle but are startled by a crow, and forget to fight each other. It wouldn't be until the publication of "Through the Looking Glass," and John Tenniel's illustrations therein, that Tweedledee and Tweedledum would be depicted as identical twins.
In Carroll's book, the twins reenact the Byron epigram and flee when a crow appears. Some might say that Tweedledee and Tweedledum represent easily distracted governments, or merely the capriciousness of children. Either way,...

Ewen MacIntosh, the British character best known for his scene-stealing work as Keith on the original U.K. version of "The Office," has passed away at the age of 50. His cause of death remains unknown, but the BBC reports that he died at the Willow Green Care Home in Darlington. In a statement, MacIntosh's friend Ed Scott praised those who cared for him before his death:
"Thanks to the incredible care and love provided by the wonderful medical staff and especially the nurses who all loved him when he brought a smile to their days."
MacIntosh was not a household name, but comedy fans, and especially those who are familiar with the original incarnation of "The Office," surely remember Keith. A dull, slow-speaking, Scotch egg-devouring weirdo with a passion for DJ-ing, Keith embodied what the series did so well -- he genuinely felt like a very real, and very awful...

The actor played accountant Keith Bishop in The Office and later reunited with Gervais on Netflix series After Life. MacIntosh also had roles in such U.K. comedies as Miranda and Little Britain.

Little Britain, David Walliams and Matt Lucas’ anarchic noughties sketch show, is causing trouble again.
Research by UK media regulator Ofcom found that viewers were shocked that an “explicitly racist” scene from the BBC comedy was available to stream on iPlayer.
Ofcom, via polling company Ipsos, showed 115 people the Little Britain sketch as part of a study into audience expectations on potentially offensive content across linear TV and streaming services.
The scene involved Linda Flint, a university counselor played by Walliams, describing student Kenneth Lao as having “yellowish skin, slight smell of soy sauce … the ching-chong China man.”
First broadcast in 2004, the sketch featured in episode two of Little’s Britain‘s second season and is currently available to view on iPlayer.

David Walliams is suing Britain’s Got Talent maker Fremantle, according to reports.
According to the BBC, the former judge on the ITV talent show has filed in London’s High Court an action listed as dealing with data protection against Fremantle label Thames.
Walliams was a judge on Britain’s Got Talent for 10 years until 2022 but last year a Guardian investigation found that he had made disrespectful comments about two contestants, which were leaked on a transcript. He was heard making explicit remarks about contestants during the recording of an episode of the talent show in January 2020. Thames said at the time they regarded Walliams’ comments as private, but that his use of language was “inappropriate.”
Walliams, a household British comedian who created Little Britain, said at the time: “I would like to apologise to the people I made disrespectful comments about during breaks in filming for in 2020. These were private...

You’ve seen Women Talking, welcome to Women Swearing: Wicked Little Letters, Thea Sharrock’s fantastically funny feature puts Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman together in the filthiest pairing since Derek met Clive in the late 1970s. Set in 1920, it’s based on a story that, per the credits, is “more true than you’d think”, which, when you get to the end of it, is quite a claim. Think what a hip, modern and actually funny Carry On spoof of Call the Midwife might look like, scripted by the Coen brothers, shot with a little visual nod to Wes Anderson, and dictated by a screenwriter with Tourette Syndrome.
Throw in a bit of St. Trinian’s moral anarchy (Launder and Gilliatt version only) and you have the runaway British comedy of the year, a sometimes cry-laughing four-letter smackdown that might well benefit from the awards-season envelope currently being pushed...

Paul King is at it again with Wonka, a film whose cast list shares several familiar names with the director's Paddington movies. This goes to show that King is hoping to duplicate the success of his past films by casting the talent he already knows works. Paddington delighted audiences with its whimsey, and Paddington 2 took this several steps further, solidifying itself as a classic from the day it was released. Of course, this has a great deal to do with the performances of Sally Hawkins, Hugh Grant, and other minor but equally as delightful actors who will now bring their skills to Wonka.
Just as the Paddington movies are based on the book series of the same name by author Michael Bond, the Wonka movie is meant to be the prequel to the 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The plot will follow a young Willy Wonka...

There are a million reasons to love Anthony Head, from his time as the librarian/watcher Rupert Giles in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to King Uther Pendragon in "Merlin," to the Prime Minister in "Little Britain." If you're on the younger side, though, you might have missed another wildly popular project that Head did, both in the U.K. and later in the U.S. It wasn't a film or a TV show. It was a series of coffee commercials.
Gather 'round, children, as I explain TV commercials. We had to watch them. We had no choice and no way to fast forward. That means that when a commercial came along with two insanely attractive people (Head and Sharon Maughan) who flirt over a borrowed container of coffee, we were riveted. This wasn't some idiot yelling about low prices on stereos or preternaturally adult children giving the thumbs up over a plastic toy.

Matt was known for his comedic work and television and film credits, which include Little Britain and Bridesmaids, before he joined the competition series. Matt joined during The Great British Baking Show season 11, taking over Sandi Toksvig’s spot next to Noel Fielding. Recently, Matt and Noel found themselves in the middle of some controversy after making culturally insensitive jokes during The Great British Baking Show season 14. Judges, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith also rounded out the presenters during Matt’s tenure.
Taking to social media, Matt revealed he is exiting The Great British Baking Show after posting a farewell message on Twitter. Matt cited his various projects as a factor behind his exit, explaining that the balancing act had become too much. Matt wrote, “It’s become clear to me...

Matt Lucas is stepping away from “The Great British Bake Off” after co-hosting for three years, citing a busy schedule that includes his talk show, “Fantasy Football League.”
“Xxx Farewell Bake Off! It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers, but it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both ‘Fantasy Football League’ and ‘Bake Off’ alongside all my other projects. So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else,” Lucas posted on social media Tuesday.
“I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent. I wish whoever takes over all the very best and I can’t wait to tune...

Sugar and flour-dusted friends, all is not well in the world of baking. Like Ian Watters' Baked Alaska sailing into the bin in 2014, a host for "The Great British Baking Show" (aka "The Great British Bake Off" in the U.K.) is leaving the tent. Matt Lucas, who has appeared alongside co-host Noel Fielding and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith for three seasons, is leaving the reality series.
Lucas posted the news on Twitter (via TV Line) saying:
