I caught “Last Breath” in theaters this weekend, and wow - what a ride. Beautifully shot, intense, and suspenseful - and incredibly, it’s all based on a true story. It follows a deep-sea diver who gets stranded 300 feet below the ocean with only minutes of air left… and the rescue mission to try and save his life. Catherine Hardwicke is returning to her Dogtown roots for her latest directorial effort, “Street Smart,” which centers on a group of unhoused young adults in the iconic Southern California beach town of Venice.

Hardwicke co-wrote the drama with New York Times best-selling author and screenwriter Nic Sheff, which is said to offer a “gripping” look into the lives of the lively group who “come together with humor and a bit of Robin Hood-style larceny, forging unbreakable bonds and redefining what it means to be a family.”

The stellar ensemble cast includes Isabelle Fuhrman, Yara Shahidi, Michael Cimino, Daniel Zovatto, Kaitlyn Kemp, Miles McKenna and pro skateboarder Isiah Hilt.

“In the wake of the recent tragedies that have profoundly impacted Los Angeles and the Hollywood community, we feel incredibly fortunate to be working in L.A.,” Hardwicke said in a statement announcing the production start. (Principal photography began on Jan. 27 in Los Angeles.

There’s always a risk of ending up on the wrong side of history whenever you jump on a proverbial bandwagon. For instance, Spaghetti Westerns were once considered one of the lowest forms of entertainment, and yet most critics now agree that films like Once Upon a Time in the West are among the best movies ever made. Comedian Mitch Hedberg is set to be the focus of a forthcoming documentary, nearly two decades after his death.

Director Jeff Siegel, who is nominated for a 2024 Emmy, is helming the feature that has wrapped principal photography after a filming process that began five years ago. The project, which is currently untitled and does not yet have a planned release date, is set to include archival footage, home movies and interviews with loved ones, childhood friends and fellow comics.

The 20th anniversary HollyShorts Film Festival is set to honor a quartet of major Hollywood talents, from industry veterans to an up-and-coming star.

Actor Tom Skeritt, actor-director Alden Ehrenreich, director Catherine Hardwicke, and young actress Lexi Underwood will receive laurels at the prestigious Oscar-qualifying festival, which runs from August 8-18.

HollyShorts will present its Luminary Award to Ehrenreich in recognition of his work in front of and behind the camera. Ehrenreich’s directorial debut, Shadow Brother Sunday, screened last year at HollyShorts following its world premiere at Tribeca Festival.

"I think 'Twilight' could be huge." Those were the words that were once said to be uttered by Paramount's former co-president of production Karen Rosenfelt, who helped turn the YA novel into a movie. While the movie ultimately wouldn't be made at Paramount, it turns out she was more right than anyone could have possibly predicted. In the end, Paramount's loss would turn into Summit Entertainment's ridiculous gain as the movie based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling book would kick off not just a billion-dollar franchise, but an entire blockbuster YA craze.

It's easy to take for granted now, but the saga of Bella and Edward — which is now ingrained in popular culture — did not reek of success at the outset.

Emile Hirsch stars in the dark drama thriller Walden, playing a court stenographer seeking revenge due to accumulated frustrations and a terminal illness. Catherine Hardwicke, in a recent interview with Yahoo News, detailed her struggles to make her debut "Thirteen."

The film is about two (you guessed it) 13-year-old delinquents, Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) and Evie (Nikki Reed). According to Hardwicke, the characters' ages and the sensual subject matter meant no studio would touch it: "Every financier said, 'No, we can't make it. How could we make a movie that's gonna be R-rated with an unknown 13-year-old girl in the lead?'"

"Thirteen" was ultimately shot for $2 million (raised by Hardwicke herself with independent equity) over 24 days.

Her career hobbled by uninspired material since the commercial bonanza of “Twilight’s” first screen installment 15 years ago, Catherine Hardwicke at first appears to be back on firmer terra with “Prisoner’s Daughter.” Its mix of adult dysfunction and coming-of-age pains against a downscale milieu (here working-class Las Vegas) recalls the director’s strong initial features, “Thirteen” and “Lords of Dogtown.”

But this drama, with Brian Cox as a terminally ill ex-con reunited with daughter Kate Beckinsale and her son, soon reveals itself as a formulaic contrivance heading towards predictable strife and tearjerking.
