Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s impassioned speech, delivered Wednesday during the opening ceremony of the Venice Film Festival, was a reminder to the international film industry not to ignore or forget the war raging on Europe’s eastern borders.

“Your opinion is important, and your voice counts,” Zelensky said in his recorded video, calling on the film industry to “talk about this war with the most clear language possible: the language of cinema, the language that you all talk.”

More than six months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, news of the war has begun to slip out of the headlines, something Zelensky pointed to in his speech, noting the danger that those killed in the conflict could fall into “obliviousness and obscurity.”

Berlin-based sales outfit Films Boutique is to handle world rights on Maria Speth’s Berlinale competition entry, Mr Bachmann And His Class.

A German distributor, Grandfilm, is already on board and is looking to release the film theatrically this summer.

The documentary was produced by Speth through Berlin-based Madonnen Film, and co-written with Reinhold Vorschneider.

Mr Bachmann And His Class explores the close bond between an elementary school teacher and his students. His unconventional methods clash with the complex social and cultural realities of the provincial German industrial town they live in.

Of course, a show about a fake psychic detective named Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best friend Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill) was destined to be hilarious. In fact, one of the best things about Psych is that in order to get pretty much anywhere in an investigation, Shawn usually gives Gus a ridiculous nickname to fit the situation. The Devil Inside director William Brent Bell has signed on to direct The Inhabitant for Lakeshore Entertainment and Vertigo.

No plot details have been released for the supernatural thriller, but the story is said to be in the same vein as last year's box office hit The Conjuring. Stacey Menear wrote the screenplay. The writer's script entitled Mixtape landed on The Blacklist back in 2009.

Tom Rosenberg (Gone) and Gary Lucchesi (I, Frankenstein) are producing for Lakeshore Entertainment, alongside Vertigo's Roy Lee (The Lego Movie), Matt Berenson (The Place Beyond the Pines), Jim Wedaa (Unstoppable) and Adam Stone. No production schedule was given.

William Brent Bell made his directorial debut in 2006 with Stay Alive. His 2012 follow-up, The Devil Inside, took in $107.1 million worldwide from just a $1 million production budget. He also directed the thriller Wer, which hasn't been released in the U.S. at this time.

What’s this? I’m reviewing a new British movie? Yes indeed, if you’ve been a long time reader of my work, you may have noticed a proclivity for me to review mainly American movies be it of the mainstream or independent variety. But every so often a British flick comes along that grabs my attention – usually they’re of the horror or thriller variety of course, and Last Passenger is no different.

The film tells the story of a small group of passengers on a late night train out of London. In the sleepy and abandoned carriages stop after stop are missed and Lewis (Dougray Scott), with five other remaining passengers, end up on a ride of a lifetime as the train hurtles relentlessly down the track.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has been cast as one of the lead villains in Marvel's Alan Taylor-directed Thor: The Dark World. He will take on the dual roles of Algrim the Strong and Kurse.

Algrim the Strong was the most powerful of a race of Dark Elves, who is coerced by Malekith to fight Thor. After he's betrayed by Malekith and injured during a battle, Algrim is healed and transformed into a much more powerful being called Kurse, who is twice as a strong as Thor.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje has had small roles in several films such as G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, The Thing, The Bourne Identity, Unstoppable, but he's probably best known for playing Mr. Eko on Lost. He joins Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Stellan Skarsgard, Rene Russo, Kat Dennings and rounded out by Christopher Eccleston who will play the big bad villain Malekith the Accursed,...

Talk about a two-for-one offer: Team Marvel, which is still in the midst of making Thor sequel The Dark World, has snagged former Lost man Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje to play not one but – count ‘em – two roles in the movie.The actor, who has also appeared in the likes of G.I. Joe, Faster, The Thing and Unstoppable, is on board to initially play Algrim the Strong, the toughest of the Dark Elves ruled by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) who fight Thor and his family.But when Malekith betrays him, Algrim is injured in battle, only to be healed and turned into Kurse, a being who is described as twice as strong as Asdgard’s finest. In Playing House this girl has her eye on the good life with a new Doctor just out of his internship – via riding his best friend from behind in the pool. Playing House is a kind of cross between Single White Female and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. The strength of Playing House is in the performances, Mayra Leal as Blair and Sarah Prikryl as Jen particularly. These women both make the film work very well. Read the full review of Playing House. Brad Jenkel has been tapped to join Bob Yari and Mark Gordon's Stratus Film Co. as executive vp production, effective immediately. Jenkel joins Stratus from his post as president of Avi Lerner's Millennium Films, where he worked on such films as Try Seventeen starring Elijah Wood and Mandy Moore, Nine Lives starring Wesley Snipes and Loverboy directed by Kevin Bacon and starring Kyra Sedgwick and Matt Dillon.

Jacqueline Obradors has nabbed the lead female role opposite Wesley Snipes in Nine Lives for Millennium Films. Shooting is scheduled to start April 13 in Bulgaria with David Carson at the helm. Obradors will be seen on screens nationwide Friday starring opposite Vin Diesel in New Line Cinema's A Man Apart. Nine Lives, described as a cross between Jacob's Ladder and The Bourne Identity, centers on a former Army Special Ops soldier (Snipes) who is mistaken for a government agent and gets injected with a hallucinogenic mind-control drug that allows others to alter his reality with simple suggestions. Finding himself on the run, he must search for the antidote while battling his foes, his inner demons and the illusions the drug allows his enemies to create. Obradors will play a police detective and wife of Snipes' character. Tom Vaughan penned the screenplay. Millennium's Avi Lerner and Brad Jenkel are producing along with Jim Wedaa and Tom Jacobson, with Bob Misiorowski executive producing. Millennium is fully financing the project. Obradors is repped by Writers & Artists Agency, Mark Teitelbaum at Teitelbaum Artists Group and attorney David Feldman. Her other credits include the indie film Tortilla Soup and the TV series NYPD Blue.
