‘Limbo’ wins Golden Pyramid at Cairo film festival

Other winners included Russian drama ‘Conference’ and Egyptian documentary ‘Lift Like A Girl’.

Ben Sharrock’s UK drama Limbo was awarded three top prizes at the Cairo International Film Festival (Ciff) on Thursday, including the Golden Pyramid for best film.

The asylum seeker drama, which received a Cannes 2020 label and world premiered at Toronto, also won the Henry Barakat award for best artistic contribution and the Fipresci critics award. It follows a best film win at the Macao international film festival in China earlier this week.

McDormand, Lerman, Marling married to The Wife
Exclusve: Cast rounds on Us-Swedish drama set to star Glenn Close.

Frances McDormand (Fargo), Logan Lerman (Fury), Brit Marling (Arbitrage), Christian Slater (Nymphomaniac) and Jonathan Pryce (Woman in Gold) have joined Glenn Close in Us-Swedish drama The Wife.

Ahead of the Efm, Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar’s Embankment Films has boarded the intriguing package produced by Anonymous Content and Sweden’s Meta Film.

CAA and Wme Global are co-representing the U.S sale.

Close will star as the elegant Joan Castleman, a flawlessly gracious wife who gladly gave up her writing ambitions to play the role of helpmate to her husband, the philandering literary giant Joe Castleman (Jonathan Pryce). On the eve of Joe’s Nobel Prize for Literature Joan decides to leave him.

Slater is the determined, unauthorized biographer who unwittingly becomes the catalyst that prompts Joan’s decision.

'Call Girl' Casts Pernilla August & Simon J. Berger
Mikael Marcimain (The Laser Man, How Soon is now) is to begin filming his feature film directorial debut 'Call Girl' in July. The Newgrange Pictures co-production stars Pernilla August (Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, Director of 'Daybreak') and Simon J. Berger (How Soon is now). 'Call Girl' is a dense political thriller set in the late seventies, a time of women's liberation, sexual revolution, Swedish neutrality, nuclear power and social security.

NEW YORK -- Indie distributor Newmarket Films said Tuesday that it has acquired a trio of Scandinavian movies from international sales outfit Trust Films Sales -- Old, New, Borrowed and Blue, In Your Hands and Daybreak. Newmarket previously has rolled out such Trust films as Open Hearts, by Susanne Bier, and Lukas Moodysson's Lilja 4-ever. Natasha Arthy's Danish dogma project, Borrowed and Blue, is a bittersweet comedy about the perils of love and honesty. The film, which screened stateside at the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival, was written by Kim Fupz Aakesen and stars Sidse Babett Knudsen, Bjorn Kjellman and Soeren Byder.
