Sohag Raat

9/10

An unheard classic....

A 40s classic needn't be made on a mythological or historical genre. This is what stands for this movie. It's an intrinsic love triangle blended with human emotions, guilt, and greed executed with wit and awe. The film depicts a time period through its splendid landscape shots and costumes and has a power to mesmerize through its storytelling. The characters built from the main protagonists to the villains and supporting cast are tinged with a contemporary taste, seldom seen in the era.

The biggest compliment for the film should be the interest it perplexes throughout with a touching denouement, yet the frequent songs in between somewhat mars the flow. The next commendation is Geeta Bali. It's her first film, and the role she performs with a tremendous verve and poignancy is simply amazing. Perhaps it's an unheard classic; but you ought to watch it for, if you're exploring the hidden gems of Hindi cinema.
