Thirty-six years after MTV News was created to expand the stable of programming that defined the cable channel MTV, it is no more.
MTV News was shuttered this week as part of larger layoffs at parent company Paramount Global.
What launched as a single show in 1987 (The Week in Rock, led by correspondent Kurt Loder) eventually became a bona fide news outlet for Gen X and older millennials who found that traditional TV programming on the broadcast networks and CNN wasn’t cutting it.
Correspondents like Loder, Tabitha Soren, SuChin Pak, Gideon Yago, Alison Stewart and others covered music, pop culture, politics and other topics with an eye toward the younger generation that was tuned to MTV, rather than the network evening newscasts.

The Hills were alive with the sound of music at the 2007 MTV VMAs. Ten years ago, reality stars Lauren Conrad, Audrina Patridge and Whitney Port walked the red carpet together at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. "I love the fact that it's in Vegas," Patridge told MTV News reporter Suchin Pak. "It's fun. There are people all around. It's crazy!" "It's so hard getting around everywhere," Port added. "It's so packed!" Long before she launched her popular fashion line at Kohl's, Conrad modeled a dress of her own design. "For red carpets, I've been doing one of a kind pieces," she revealed. "Just for fun!" The reality stars...

It was announced earlier this year that Jeff Goldblum will officially be reprising his role as Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World 2, and it has now been revealed that his dialogue will be taken straight from Michael Crichton's original Jurassic Park novel. The first Jurassic Park movie came out 25 years ago and it was widely known that it was based off of Crichton's novel of the same name, but that fact seems to have faded over time for younger generations getting into the new series. Crichton also wrote the sequel The Lost World, but as with most projects based on novels, the movies of both books changed quite a bit, angering some fans of the books.

MTV announced that it will premiere the new one-hour documentary “Prescription For Change: Ending America’s Opioid Crisis,” which tackles America’s opioid addiction epidemic, on October 11th. The film will highlight the societal forces that have contributed to the crisis, follows three young women in recovery, and will feature a frank conversation about substance use between Grammy Award-winning artist Macklemore and President Barack Obama.

“I’m one of millions of Americans who has struggled with addiction and abused pain killers, and if it weren’t for treatment and recovery I wouldn’t be here today,” says Macklemore, also an executive producer of the film. “This documentary shines a light on some of the things we need to do to address this epidemic.”

Black-ish stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross don't mind giving themselves a big pat on the back for a job well done. The onscreen married couple sat down to chat with each other on People's List - an hour-long weekly program co-hosted by Jerry O'Connell and former MTV News correspondent Suchin Pak discussing five newsworthy individuals you need to know that week - and they couldn't quite contain their excitement over hosting the upcoming Bet Awards. Maybe you’re a podcast obsessive, filling every spare moment of your commute to catch up on your favorites. Or a single-subject listener, only keeping up with a subject or issue that means most to you. The beauty of podcasts is that they can cater to completists and dabblers alike.
Regardless of your preferred way to enjoy these stories and conversations, it can be daunting to track the latest from every show. To highlight some of the year’s best, here are 10 quality episodes we suggest adding to your listening queue.
Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People – 1. Ron Paul’s Baby
Airdate: March 15th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: In all its various broadcast homes, “The Chris Gethard Show” has been one of the most thrilling weekly experiments on TV. So it makes sense that a Gethard-hosted podcast would have the same comedic blend of empathy and honesty. The show is built on conversations between Gethard and anonymous callers, governed only by two rules: the phone line closes after an hour, but Gethard can’t hang up before then. The host has a keen sense for the unspoken questions, the topics that each caller wants to discuss but can’t quite figure out how to broach. Not afraid to let callers turn the questions onto him, these talks have a way of culminating in a common understanding between strangers, which can be as therapeutic for a listener as it is for the two parties involved. And there’s no better place to start than the premiere, which ends with a moment so cathartic, it’ll make you an instant fan of both the individuals involved.

Embedded – The House
Airdate: March 30th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: As an NPR production, Kelly McEvers and the staff of “Embedded” demonstrate one of the essential values of great journalism: the power to use specific stories to generate empathy for groups of people often discussed in the abstract. “Embedded” is a ground-up approach to documenting various cross-sections of communities, highlighting the individuals to present an alternative to the group characterization that often befalls them. The premiere episode finds McEvers profiling the residents of a shared home in Austin, Indiana, where opioids have become an inescapable addiction for its residence. The details are stark, unsettling and unadorned. Perhaps the best proof of the value of a show like “Embedded” is that the people at the center of these stories don’t end after a half hour: an Austin resident was the subject of their first follow-up story.

Extra Hot Great – 114: Blindly Watching Game of Thrones
Airdate: April 26th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Extra Hot Great has been offering its special brand of TV observations over multiple podcast feed and co-host roster iterations. Now well past 100 episodes into its resurrection, the television discussion show has refined its dependable format, complete with a weekly consideration of a TV episode for induction in their Canon (spoiler alert: they don’t always make it, as is the case with the “30 Rock” episode discussed here). But what sets #114 apart is the episode’s installment of the weekly Game Time feature. The gang plays an round of a listener-submitted game called TV Typos (basically, the round-robin game show version of #ChangeALetterRuinATVShow). What follows is 25 minutes of brilliant, dumb wordplay with enough built-in momentum to have each co-host sobbing by the end. It’s a testament to the co-host’s deep bench of TV minutiae that they’re able to anticipate some of these before they come. The seconds between when you can tell they have the answers and the moment they give them are some of the simplest joys you’ll find anywhere.

I Was There Too – Raiders of the Lost Ark with Martin Casella
Airdate: February 16th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Matt Gourley’s interview show takes a biweekly look at the actors on the periphery of some of most beloved films of the past few decades. While the actor interviews give some choice fly-on-the-wall observations from set, the show’s most compelling episode this year is the talk with Martin Casella, who served as Steven Spielberg’s assistant during the production of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” From impromptu costume decisions to the director’s TV viewing and nutritional regimens, this firsthand account adds a new angle to an established classic. (And for anyone who’s ever obsessed over an Indiana Jones costume, Jeremy Carter’s post-interview discussion of the search for the perfect Indy leather jacket might do the same.)
Listen to These Episodes Next: “Field of Dreams with Dwier Brown,” “Aladdin with Gilbert Gottfried”
Keepin’ It 1600 – Ep. 7: Cruz-Kasich Alliance and Special Guest Jon Lovett
Airdate: May 6th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Amidst an election season that’s alternated between chaotic and soul-crushing in equal measure, it’s been fascinating to filter each week’s craziness through the perspective of two individuals who’ve been buried deep within the past two major presidential cycles. Former speechwriter Jon Favreau and Strategy and Communications Advisor Dan Pfeiffer (both of whom worked on President Obama’s national campaigns and in the White House) are each invested insiders and passionate outside observers of 2016’s descent into madness. A weekly look at the current state of political media, it’s also a dependable repository for great White House anecdotes. Alongside fellow former speechwriter Jon Lovett, the show’s seventh episode featured the trio recounting the choicest lines from the President’s various Correspondents Dinner appearances (particularly those delivered in the immediate wake of ordering the Bin Laden compound strike).
Listen to These Episodes Next: “Ep. 1: Drumpf and the Media and Rubio’s Missteps,” “Ep. 5: Bill Clinton’s Finger-Wagging and Special Guest Kal Penn,” “Ep. 9: ‘Meet the Press’ Host Chuck Todd, Drumpf’s ‘Pivot,’ Polling Mayhem, and More”
Modern Love – 3: Not So Simple Math
Airdate: January 28th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Sarah Paulson’s central role as Marcia Clark was one of the main reasons the “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson” grabbed the public’s attention in the year’s early months. But Paulson also gave another 2016-best performance in a venue where no one could see her face. Wbur’s Modern Love enlists notable performers like Paulson to perform entries from the regular New York Times column that highlights love in all its forms. Paulson reads Amy Seek’s story of navigating an open adoption with a gentleness that conveys the underlying heartbreak without being manipulative. While other episodes usually succeed on the strength of the performance, this one features a conversation with Seek herself, whose recollection of the events she details in her piece and the six years since is a powerful addendum to a story beautifully told.
Listen to These Episodes Next: “7: In Darkness and In Light,” “9: Seesawing Libidos”
More Perfect – Cruel and Unusual
Airdate: June 1st
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Some of the best new podcasts of the year have focused on institutions, whether they’re more abstract (American Public Media’s The Uncertain Hour focuses on policies and practice within America’s welfare system) or more defined, as with More Perfect’s close examination of the Supreme Court. In its pilot episode, this Radiolab presentation trains its microphones on the pivotal individuals at the center of multiple states’ capital punishment programs. Layered with the trademark attention to atmospheric sound design that makes its parent podcast such a reliable listen, More Perfect should provide a healthy perspective amidst a judicial branch currently in flux.
Listen to These Episodes Next: Once you’ve listened to this and Episode 2, “The Political Thicket,” go back and listen to the Podcast Hall-of-Fame-worthy Radiolab episode “Stochasticity.”
Reply All – #64-67: On the Inside
Airdate: May 11th-June 9th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: This Gimlet show has been the best podcast in existence for the better part of a year now, so to pick just one standout episode is particularly difficult. But the edge goes to the four-episode arc centered on Paul Modrowski, whose blog written from inside prison (where he’s currently serving a life sentence) first attracted the attention of producer Sruthi Pinnamaneni last year. What begins as an investigation of the logistics behind the posting of Modrowski’s expansive online diary eventually uncovers questions surrounding his incarceration. Like the best true crime stories, it balances the details of the central murder cases with a careful consideration of the individuals who allegedly inhabited its timeline. Most popular true crime podcasts keep the perspective of a single narrator, but Pinnamaneni sprinkles in just enough input from regular hosts Alex Goldman and Pj Vogt to add a conversational, illustrative layer to Modrowski’s story. Pinnamaneni’s reporting is extensive and forthright, the kind that will make you want to do your own outside research as soon as the last chapter ends.
Listen to These Episodes Next: “#3 We Know What You Did,” “#44 Shine on You Crazy Goldman,” “#56 Zardulu”
Skillset – #3: This is Bringing Up Weird Feelings for Me
Airdate: May 12th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Amy Nicholson’s first-person podcast for MTV News is an intriguing blend of below-the-line education and critical insight. Between her forgotten film history written intros and the specificity of her interview subjects, Nicholson helps Skillset feel more like a series of audio profiles than regular taped conversations. These episodes highlight movies not just as a vital art form, but a gateway to the rest of what the world has to offer. (How many other film podcasts would have jazz trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire as their inaugural guest?) This particular episode features a window into the practical, unenhanced feline training that let the cats of “Keanu” steal the spotlight against some comedic heavyweights. And if you’re wondering what a real punk band thought of Jeremy Saulnier’s latest genre triumph “Green Room,” Nicholson enlists The Muffs for some authentic opinions. It’s this kind of extra-layer digging that has this fresh batch of MTV shows (“The Stakes” takes a similarly fascinating route to addressing the unspoken side of politics) already off and running at full speed.
Listen to These Episodes Next: All six episodes so far all have quality hooks, but the Sharlto Copley episode from the pilot is particularly worth a listen.
Start Up – Season 3, Episode 4: Dear Music Fans…
Airdate: May 12th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Season 1 of Start Up was a rare glimpse inside the creation of its podcasting parent company Gimlet Media, right as the medium was becoming mainstream. Season 2 stayed nested inside a company’s origin story, this time as an outside observer of a dating site’s early months. For their most recent set of episodes, Start Up managed to compress the roller coaster of entrepreneurship in a more compact form. Profiling the unexpected rise and publicly unceremonious end of Grooveshark, Eric Mennel reports on the music streaming site’s early troubles, serendipitous success and eventual replacement in the entrepreneurial space. It’s a familiar arc for the biographies of these kinds of businesses, but through the Start Up lens, these triumphs and tragedies reach further toward each pole than you might expect.
Listen to These Episodes Next: Season 1 launched the entire company, but Season 2’s 10-episode arc on Dating Ring is still great.
Honorable Listens also highly worthy of your time: the aforementioned The Uncertain Hour and The Stakes; 99% Invisible’s ode to trash truck tunes; Mortified’s tale of pining after the vice principal; Lauren Lapkus helps to tackle kids’ impossible questions on The Longest Shortest Time; Candidate Confessional talks to the recipient of one of local politics’ most infamous viral booing sessions; Five Thirty Eight Politics’ audio doc on the Rev. Jeremiah Wright week of the ’08 presidential campaign; the episode of the Washington Post’s Presidential that proves James Monroe was everywhere in early American history; Making the Sausage’s in-depth conversation about music licensing; The First Annual Blank Check Awards (one of the best 2015 year-end wrap-ups you’ll hear); the ongoing You Must Remember This series chronicling the Hollywood Blacklist is a given for a list like this; The Dollop’s overview of the truly unbelievable Fed Ex Flight 705; Buzzfeed’s Internet Explorer compendium of workplace email/chat catastrophes; You’re the Expert’s hilarious panel show with a leading psychologist who studies nightmares; the Planet Money profile of an infuriating-yet-textbook Internet scamming scheme; The Memory Palace’s cryptic look at an American pariah-turned-wrestler; a careful consideration of the future of animation/CGI via Fighting in the War Room; The Gist and Chris Molanphy remember Prince.

The singer is still dealing with fallout from assaulting Rihanna in 2009.
More than five years after the fact, Chris Brown is still facing fallout from his 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna. So it stands to reason that he'd have words for Ray Rice in the wake of his NFL suspension.
Rice was officially cut from the Baltimore Ravens this week after a video leaked in which he could be seen assaulting his then-fiancee, now wife Janay Rice. A lot of people have had a lot of opinions on the matter (including Janay herself), and now Brown is chiming in.
"I think it's all about the choices you make," Brown told MTV News' Sway Calloway when asked what he had learned from his own experience. "With me, I deal with a lot of anger issues from my past – not knowing how to express myself verbally and at the same time not knowing how to cope with my emotions...

It's official! Miley Cyrus will be at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, but are her twerking and tonguing days behind her?

The "Chandelier" singer nabbed her first No. 1 album this week.
For anyone who can’t get "Chandelier" out of their head, it should come as no surprise that Sia is more than just a phenomenal singer -- she's a killer songwriter, too.
The famously press-shy star (did you catch her on Late Night with Seth Meyers? Or on Ellen?) nabbed her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart this week, but she's been churning out hits for her fellow artists for years. Sure, we remember her voice on David Guetta's "Titanium" and on Flo Rida's "Wild Ones," but did you know that she's written some of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Britney Spears' biggest hits?

And she’s not the first famous person to occupy the space- “Liza Minnelli used to live here and Tony Bennett used to live here.”

Lady Gaga is known for her eclectic style, and her New York City apartment is no exception! As part of her MTV Takeover on Friday, Mother Monster invited MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway into the $22,000 a month digs, that was once the home of Liza Minneli and Tony Bennett. Walking into the penthouse is like entering a rainforest, complete with leaf-covered walls and what appears to be turf on the floor. The "Artpop" singer was in costume (obviously), rocking a full floral dress and white gloves. She invited Sway to sip tea and see the spectacular view from her private balcony, the only outdoor space she has away from screaming fans and paparazzi. "The most important thing to me about this place is I can come out here and stand outside. That's the best thing. I miss going outside," she explained, saying she often has to go outside in disguise.

No surprise, but we’re big fans of Lady Gaga around here. We love her music, her social activism and definitely her live performances. No one puts on a better show.
Gaga made her debut television performance at the 2008 NewNowNext Awards where she brought down the house with “Just Dance.” Since then, she has served up some memorable MTV Vma performances. The 2009 show featured her in elaborate white lace and gore for “Paparazzi”, the 2011 show had her transformed into male alter ego Jo Calderone for “You and I.”
And who can forget when a boxed nun Gaga opened the 2013 VMAs with “Applause”?
Gaga just kicked off her new world tour artRave: The Artpop Ball and is in the midst of a seven-night sold out run at NYC’s Roseland Ballroom. That legendary venue is being closed forever following Gaga’s run this week– so she’s quite literally bringing down the house.

Miley Cyrus got a dose of star power while filming her MTV Unplugged special in La on Tuesday. Madonna joined the "Wrecking Ball" singer, and the pair hit the stage while decked out in spangly country Western garb (they also made sure to stick out their tongues together, Miley style). Miley and Madonna belted out two tunes together including Madonna's hit "Don't Tell Me" as well as Miley's "We Can't Stop." After taping their performances, Miley told the crowd, "That was pretty f*cking cool, you guys. It sounds super lame, but as a pop star it's pretty cool performing with Madonna." Justin’s grandfather, George Bieber, claims the 19-year-old pop star has forsaken him and his wife, Kathy Bieber, and says they sometimes feel “he doesn’t care.” That doesn’t sound like the Justin we know and love, so we’re guessing if his relationship with his grandparents is strained, it’s probably because his grandfather shockingly slammed the Biebs’ behavior to the press in April!

2013 was supposed to be the year that a sequel to “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” finally came together. Fans and participants alike were excited about it; Nathan Fillion, who starred in the 2008 internet musical alongside Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day, had hinted that a sequel was forthcoming, if not imminent, and Maurissa Tancharoen, who crafted the film with the Brothers Whedon (her husband Jed and in-laws Zack and Joss) confirmed to MTV News in late 2012 that work was indeed being done.
But alas, it is not to be -- not in 2013 and highly unlikely in 2014. And you can put most of the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Avengers and their sequel.
“I think that all of us overestimated our multitasking abilities,” Zack Whedon told us. “It’s not on the front burner, unfortunately.” What is on the front burner is Joss’ second Avengers film...

Browncoats (fans of Joss Whedon’s short-lived TV show “Firefly” and its feature film follow-up “Serenity”) have had reason to rejoice since Dark Horse Comics announced that the adventures of Captain Malcolm Reynolds and Co. will continue with a new six-issue comic series, “Serenity: Leaves on the Wind.” What makes this even sweeter for fans is the choice of writer for the series: television scribe Zack Whedon... Also known as Joss’ little brother.
Most of the previously published Firefly/Serenity comics, including those scripted by Zack, focused on backstory, or events that occurred between the TV show and the film. “Leaves on the Wind” will be the first series to pick up the action right where “Serenity” left off. It commences roughly 39 weeks after the Serenity crew managed to give the big bad guys of the Alliance a sizeable butt-kicking, with a very pregnant Zoe (widow...

Once we got all the important issues out of the way — we talked briefly about the prevalence of meth in her hometown, as well as the fact that I share a name with her middle school ex-boyfriend — we switched gears to the show’s new season.

First came "We Can't Stop," then came "Wrecking Ball," and now..."SMS"?! So it seems, at least if Miley Cyrus gets her way, as the 20-year-old pop star recently confessed she wants the next single from her album Bangerz to be track with Britney Spears (!). "I hope 'SMS (Bangerz)' with Britney [Spears]. That would be awesome," the twerking queen told MTV News at her album launch party in NYC when asked what song she would pick for her next single. While Miley presumably has some say in the matter, the performer's team must come to an agreement, so Cyrus has a back-up plan track in mind. Photos: Miley Cyrus' best ab moments "But also,...

Like his latest film, "A.C.O.D.," Adam Scott is funny, but he can talk about some pretty serious stuff.
Take, for example, his latest interview with MTV News' Josh Horowitz for the newest episode of After Hours.
During an Up Close segment, Adam and Josh work through a bunch of troublesome areas, like how to tell a child that you're getting a divorce and whether Batman could ever really beat Superman. (No, he can't.)
Check it all out in the latest episode of After Hours with Adam Scott.

She stunned the nation, and quite possibly the world, with her antics and “twerking,” and Miley Cyrus is clearly far from quitting. Although many would accuse the 21-year-old songstress of over sexualizing her career, veteran rap artist Nelly is not among them.
"I'm excited to see somebody throw some stuff right back in a lot of people's face," Nelly said when he sat with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway on "RapFix Live" Wednesday (October 2). "I think she's very smart because I think she's doin' it on purpose. Everybody's in an uproar and I'm like go 'head, play right into her hands."
"She's young, why shouldn't she do it? Somebody else did it their way and wound up being one of the biggest stars on the planet, possibly one of the biggest females of all time in Madonna," he added. "Don't nobody say nothin'. Now everybody wanna hold Madonna holidays."
"She...

Making a triumphant comeback with the first single off of her upcoming album, Britney Spears' music video for "Work B**ch" debuted on Tuesday (October 1).
Aired on the CW network, the video featured lots of dancing, location changes, and sexy pop princess outfits.
According to director Ben Mor in an interview with MTV News, "I think this is a more adult Britney, definitely a more adult Britney. You can't have soft visuals for a song called 'Work Bitch,' and we sure as hell didn't."
So stoked for fans to check it out, Britney tweeted, "Ben Mor & I are finally finished with #WorkBxxCH. So proud of this video & overjoyed to share with my beautiful fans."...

See Britney Spears pose through this 15-second trailer for her “Work Bitch” video. See her crouch in a two-piece outfit. See her stand still as a Lamborghini drives behind her eight other women. See her admire herself in the mirror. See her flick her hair. That’s basically it for the teaser to the Ben Mor-directed clip for Spears’ current single, which debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. Mor had this to say to MTV News about Britney Spears video: "It's about creating iconic backdrops for her and really letting her create iconic moments that represent the...

Miley Cyrus is finally addressing her racy performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. The pop star says she was out to make history with her surreal, grinding-filled rendition of "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines," but she isn't thinking about the negative reaction to it, saying that her critics are putting more thought into her twerking than she did. "I don't pay attention to the negative," Cyrus says in a brief clip from documentary footage, provided to MTV News. "Madonna's done it, Britney's done it, every Vma performance, anyone
