Donald Trump
President Donald Trump Tweetstorm – The Saturday Edition
Donald Trump
President Donald Trump got a late start on his regular weekend tweetstorm, but has roared back to life with a few cheers for his efforts and broadsides against perceived enemies.

The Commander-in-Tweet noted a pundit’s praise of his trade deal with Japan, and defiantly promised, “We Will Build It Again!” It, of course, is the economy, which has taken a pounding over the last month and teeters on the brink.

The “Lamestream Media” came in for its traditional pounding, the President noting how few stories criticizing him cite on-the-record sources. Instead, he insisted, the stories are made up “to defame and disparage.”

Trump faces a tough decision in the days ahead on whether...

Judi Dench at an event for Indian Palace (2011)
Could Judi Dench (‘Cats’) join the list of elite actors who have won both Oscar and Razzie?
Judi Dench at an event for Indian Palace (2011)
It might be a bit surprising to see the beloved Judi Dench in contention for an award calling out the worst achievements in film, but such was the effect of “Cats,” the widely ridiculed movie musical that leads this year’s Razzie noms. The good news, though, is that even if she wins she’ll be in good company. More than a dozen Oscar-winning actors have won Razzies too.

SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today

Dench, a Best Supporting Actress winner for “Shakespeare in Love” (1998), is now up for Worst Supporting Actress for her role as Old Deuteronomy, the leader of the Jellicle cats who was actually played by male actors on Broadway and the West End. This Razzies category alone has gone to Oscar winners Faye Dunaway and Kim Basinger.

Dunway also won Worst Actress for “Mommie Dearest” (1981). That category has gone to even more Oscar champs: Liza Minnelli...

Blade Runner: 5 Things the Movies Left Out (& 5 Things They Added In)
It's no surprise to those who’ve seen Blade Runner, or the sequel Blade Runner: 2049, that Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is merely inspiration for the movies. Many of Dick’s books have been similarly adapted to film as action-adventure movies like Total Recall, Minority Report, Paycheck, and The Adjustment Bureau.

In 1982’s Blade Runner, indolent detective Rick Deckard traverses a futuristic Los Angeles looking for rogue replicants, humanoid robots built to serve people who’ve remained on earth after a debilitating war. From this basic premise the book and movie go in different directions, the most notable changes listed here.

John Woo at an event for Paycheck (2003)
Why Action Master John Woo Will Never Make a Superhero Movie
John Woo at an event for Paycheck (2003)
As strange as it may sound after years of operating out of the Hollywood spotlight, The Killer and Hard Boiled director John Woo is getting all kinds of attention this week after receiving the Halekulani Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hawaii International Film Festival. But one of Woo's recent comments that caught my attention the most was when the legendary action movie filmmaker said he has no intention of ever taking the helm of a comic book movie. Marvel, DC, or otherwise.

"I don't have that gift. I'm not a sci-fi guy - I don't think I could make a good one. There's so much imagination... I don't think I can reach that level."

Wait, John Woo just said he's not a sci-fi guy? Checks notes. But he directed the 1997 sci-fi action-thriller Face / Off starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Does he not consider that supremely silly and stellar motion picture to be science fiction?...

John Woo Says He Won’t Be Involved With The Face/Off Reboot
While he hasn’t helmed a Hollywood production in quite some time, legendary director John Woo is fondly remembered as a master of the action film. From classic Hong Kong flicks like Hard Boiled and A Better Tomorrow to Western movies such as Mission: Impossible 2 and Paycheck, Woo has solidified himself as one of the best in the business, especially when it comes to the action genre.

One of his more bizarre movies (and arguably his most famous) is 1997’s Face/Off, which saw John Travolta and Nicolas Cage facing off after they swapped identities. While the idea might seem a little cheesy by today’s standards, it was well-received by critics and fans alike, and it even snagged an Academy Award nom for Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing.

It should come as no surprise then that Paramount has decided to reboot Face/Off, presumably passing on the sequel that...

Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Volte/face (1997)
‘Face/Off’ Reboot in the Works at Paramount
Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Volte/face (1997)
The 1997 action movie “Face/Off,” which starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, is getting a reboot.

Paramount has hired “22 Jump Street” screenwriter Oren Uziel to pen the script with Neal Moritz producing. David Permut, who was a producer on the original film, will executive produce. No actors or director has yet boarded the reboot.

John Woo directed the original movie from Mike Werb and Michael Colleary’s script. Travolta and Cage played FBI agent Sean Archer and terrorist Castor Troy, respectively, who each took on the other’s physical appearance via surgery in a complicated story triggered by the assassination of Archer’s son by Troy.

“Face/Off” also starred Joan Allen, Gina Gershon and Alessandro Nivola as Troy’s brother. The film, which carried an $80 million budget, was a solid performer with a $245 million global gross. Woo went on to direct “Mission: Impossible II,” “Windtalkers” and “Paycheck” in the next six years.

Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck’s Action Star Evolution in 10 Movies, From ‘Dazed and Confused’ to ‘Triple Frontier’
Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck takes center stage in Netflix’s upcoming “Triple Frontier,” and the pic is far from Affleck’s first as an established leading man action star. However, it took him a few films to get his bona fides, going from comedic side character to gruff hero with several stages of evolution along the way.

In his newest film, Affleck, looking his most rugged yet, plays a military veteran who orchestrates a mission with four other vets to rob a South American drug lord.

Below are 10 movies that showcase Affleck’s metamorphosis.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

Richard Linklater’s indie comedy features many before-they-were-famous stars in minor roles. Most remember Matthew McConaughey’s meme spawning “alright, alright, alright” performance, but lose a boyish Affleck in the mix of other future stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Parker Posey, Milla Jovovich, and Renee Zellweger.

Mallrats (1995)

Affleck jumped from one prolific independent comedy director...

New Us Trailer For John Woo's Crazy-Looking 90s-Style Action Film Manhunt
Action-movie director John Woo has made a new action film called Manhunt and as you'll see in this new Us trailer, it has a very 90s action movie style to it. I've enjoyed the action films that John Woo has made over the years and this one looks pretty crazy.

Action maestro John Woo returns to the mold of his classic The Killer with this remake of a classic 1970s Japanese thriller, about an innocent man who sets out to clear his name after his is framed for robbery and rape.

The movie will be released on Netflix and I'll definitely be checking it out! It's been awhile since we've seen a John Woo film like this, so I'm kinda excited about it. It's just got that pure Woo-style action-movie vibe. The last American movie he made was Paycheck back in 2003.

Manhunt will be released on Netflix on May 4th.

Action-Packed Trailer For John Woo's New Film Manhunt
The first action-packed trailer for John Woo's new film Manhunt has been released and it looks like it's as John Woo as a John Woo action film can get. We haven't really seen a John Woo film in the states for awhile. That's because he's been keeping himself busy making big Chinese epics like Red Cliff and The Crossing. The last American movie that he made was Paycheck back in 2003.

Manhunt is also a Chinese film, but maybe we'll get to see it released in the states. The movie is a remake of the 1976 Japanese thriller Kimi yo Fundo no Kawa o Watare. The story follows a man who is framed for robbery and rape and he set out on a mission to clear his name.

The trailer itself is a little rough around the edges, but it's cool to see Woo making good old fashioned action movies again!

Gal Gadot's 'Wonder Woman' Paycheck Was a Fraction of 'Superman''s
2017-06-19T11:50:11-07:00Gal Gadot's 'Wonder Woman' Paycheck Was a Fraction of 'Superman''s

Critics agree. The internet agrees. Both halves of Rotten Tomatoes agree. The box office agrees. Wonder Woman was a good movie. However, the star of said good movie and a large part of what made at least one DC movie the opposite of terrible sure didn’t make a lot for her box office slam dunk. It’s been reported that Gal Gadot made $300,000 for her role in Wonder Woman.

Of course, $300,000 is nothing to sneeze at, and this number comes without accounting for the bonus actors receive once their film passes a box office milestone — something Wonder Woman is sure to achieve. However, when you consider that Wonder Woman has already made $500 million and has just crossed its third week in theaters, less than half a million seems cheap.

But...

Matt Damon vs. Ben Affleck: Film Critics Are Forced to Pick a Favorite — IndieWire Critics Survey
Ben Affleck
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

From “School Ties” to “Live By Night” and this weekend’s “The Great Wall,” Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have each — for better and worse — left a considerable and ever-increasing footprint in the cultural landscape. But while the world is wide enough for both of them, our hearts are not. And so, we forced our panel of critics to choose: Ben Affleck or Matt Damon?

There can be only one.

Charles Bramesco (@intothecrevasse), Freelance with Rolling Stone, Vulture, Vox

Bad News For Ben Affleck: The Cost Of Live By Night's Failure Has Been Determined
A frequent topic within Lrm lately, which you've likely heard spill over onto the Los Fanboys Podcast (assuming you listen to it...which you should!!!!), is Ben Affleck's current career trajectory. We're all fans of his and I- in particular- have been very happy to see him return to the top of the mountain in the last seven years. I've been rooting for the guy since 1997 when Good Will Hunting came out and made him and Matt Damon household names. So no one was happier when he bounced back from being the butt of many a joke to suddenly being an artist that demands respect.

Remember, he started hot in 1997 and then, while Damon went for smaller, more intimate, character-driven movies, Affleck went big. He leapt from the indie darlings that brought him to prominence towards big-budget popcorn flicks like Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Paycheck, and Daredevil. And when he...

The Batman Bombshell: Ben Affleck May Drop Out!
*Update: I've added some additional perspective at the end of this post, since some folks are having trouble reading between the lines of Affleck's latest remarks*

I've been saying it for months and months, and I'll say it again:

Something is Up with Ben Affleck and his Batman movie.

On the Los Fanboys Podcast, we've pointed out all of the bizarre back-and-forth news items we've heard regarding The Batman since its inception.

First it was a given that Ben Affleck was directing itThen he suddenly "agreed" to direct it long after the project had been green-litThen the film had a release window for when it would arrive in theaters: Fall of 2018That was then countered by Affleck by saying he wasn't paying attention to any kind of release date, and would not make the film until it was readyAffleck also then confirmed, and later denied, what the movie would...

‘The Accountant’ Review: Ben Affleck Slums Through A Strange New Action Movie That Doesn’t Add Up
Ben Affleck
For all the talk of sequels, reboots, and live-action remakes, it can be comforting to be confronted with the occasional reminder that Hollywood is still capable of surprising us. Case in point: “The Accountant,” a new Warner Bros. action movie in which Ben Affleck plays an ass-kicking autistic man who travels the globe under a series of aliases and performs elite maths for some of the world’s most dangerous people. This is a real thing starring real people and made with real money (although not very much of it, as the film’s $40 million budget pales in comparison to the $175 million that the same studio recently spent on the production of “Suicide Squad”).

And though — or perhaps because — director Gavin O’Connor shoots this strange October surprise full of the same scrappy, ball-swinging gravitas that he brought to the more grounded likes of “Miracle” and “Warrior,” it is still some very,...

12 Actors Who Admitted Doing A Movie Purely For The Money
20th Century Fox

While most actors will paint a picture of their work as a noble, artistic endevour, for the majority it’s a job like everything else. They’ll appear in just about anything so long as it pays the rent. After all, bills aren’t going to get paid with artistic integrity.

There’s also the illusion that once an actor reaches the A-list – they’re secure enough to do any film they please. Again, not true. If it was then every film with a big name cast would be amazing, which is clearly not the case. They’re human like everyone else, so they’ll never be immune to the lure of easy money. Plus, they have to make movies that have a chance of being successful, so if that means a choice between a slushy romantic comedy or a braindead action movie, so be it – just...

Best and Worst of Ben Affleck: 'Argo,' 'Chasing Amy,' 'Jenny from the Block'
Ben Affleck
It goes without saying that Ben Affleck has had an incredible career. After winning a screenwriting Oscar for "Good Will Hunting" Affleck focused on his acting and tried the Hollywood leading man routine in hits such as "Armageddon," "Pearl Harbor," "Changing Lanes" and "The Sum of All Fears."  After three films in 2003 his career began to crash. "Gigli" become a pop culture touchstone because it was such a bomb and so disliked, but besides a minor success with "Paycheck" Affleck started on a major string of bombs that no one thought he'd recover from.  By 2006 he was on the comeback trail with a critically acclaimed performance in the indie "Hollywoodland" and followed that up with his directorial debut, the well received "Gone Baby Gone." The past seven years have completed the comeback with Affleck directing and starring in the hit thriller "The Town" and capping it off with a miraculous Oscar run for "Argo.

Ever since 2003’s awful “Paycheck,” John Woo has stayed away from Hollywood, returning to China to helm the two-part historical epic “Red Cliff” and co-directing the 2010 wuxia film “Reign of Assassins.” Later this year, he’s set to drop the first half of his latest sweeping period film “The Crossing,” and the film’s first featurette/trailer has arrived online. Starring Zhang Ziyi, Huang Xiamoing and Song Hye-kyo among many others, the two-part film was written by “Lust, Caution” screenwriter Wang Hui-ling and centers on three couples and their intertwining love stories set in 1940s Taiwan and Shanghai and will involve the tragic 1949 sinking of the ship Taiping and warfare. So, John Woo's "Titanic"? Lasting under three-and-a-half minutes, the trailer features a lot of impressive footage —war scenes, sinking boats, swooning scenes between lovers— from the two-part film cut alongside an Epk-style interview with Woo...

Cold in July movie review: summertime and the killing is easy
Confused suspense drama starts out gripping and descends into a moral muddle that a very good performance by Michael C. Hall cannot quite overcome. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Richard Dane once shot a man in his living room, just for having B&E’d into his home where his wife and their young child were sleeping in the middle of the night. But Richard (Michael C. Hall: Gamer, Paycheck) is a decent man, and though the police assure him that he was well within his rights to protect himself and his family, and he is certainly not going to be charged with any crime, he is shaken to the core.

This isn’t a thing that The Movies usually deal with, not on the scale...

The Pacino Code: In Search of an Al-gorithm
Al Pacino is an acting legend who has starred in some truly great movies... but he's also been in some less-than-spectacular flicks. So how can you know ahead of time whether an Al Pacino movie will be Classic Cinema or just a Pacino Paycheck? We’re working on a formula that will allow us to plug in some numbers and arrive at a conclusion, and here’s what we have so far.

Heat

Looking at the variables in this equation, it seems like Heat could have been a miss. It might not have been a sure thing, but it's definitely one of the best cat-and-mouse cop movies to hit theaters. It's Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes and is a classic '90s crime drama.

Jack and Jill

At a glance, we'd assume an Al Pacino working with a comedian and a director who together regularly spin box office gold would result in something pretty terrific.

The top 30 underrated films of 2002
Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 12 Dec 2013 - 05:49

The year of Baggins, Potter and Spider-Man also had a wealth of lesser-known movies. Here’s our pick of 2002's underappreciated films...

At the top of the box office tree, 2002 was dominated by fantasy and special effects. Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers made almost a billion dollars all by itself, with Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets taking second place and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man not too far behind.

In many ways, 2002 set the tempo for the Hollywood blockbuster landscape, which has changed relatively little in the decade since. A quick look at 2013‘s top 10, for example, reveals a markedly similar mix of superhero movies, with Iron Man 3 still ruling the roost at the time of writing, followed by effects-heavy action flicks and family-friendly animated features.

As usual in these lists, we're looking...

Ben Affleck on His Bff, Bad-Boy Past, and Batman Backlash
Ben Affleck
Just a heads-up: if there's anything you've ever wanted to know about Ben Affleck, it's probably in his recent Playboy interview. The Oscar-winning actor, who is currently filming the big-screen adaptation of Gone Girl, sat down for the sexy men's magazine and proceeded to cover everything from his career highs and lows and Academy Award wins to politics and his bad-boy past. Ben also opens up about his longtime bromance with Matt Damon, as well as the other love of his life, Jennifer Garner - he had some especially aww-inducing things to say about falling for his wife on the set back in 2003. In addition to reflecting on the past, Ben also spoke out about his future projects; namely, the epic backlash that erupted after he was cast as the new Batman, saying, "If I thought the result would be another Daredevil, I'd be out there picketing myself." Here's more...

20 interesting films from one-time movie megastars
Odd List Greg Foster 18 Oct 2013 - 06:16

We look at 20 former A-list actors, and the interesting film choices they've made...

There comes a time in every A-list actor's life when they gather their thoughts and take a step back into smaller budget or more leftfield fare - and for a variety of reasons. They may want to work with a certain director or an emerging directing talent. They might be taken by a fantastic script. They might fancy a new artistic direction. They may even have a spiritual epiphany and decide to eschew Hollywood and all its decadent trappings, or they may simply just not have a choice, since the big roles have long since dried up for them.

The reason for this list then, is to look at some of those shining lights, the household names, and at the films they took up as proof of their artistic integrity.

Questions and Answers With Paul Giamatti
Paul Giamatti has made his name as an actor since the early '90s, and it seems like he's in literally everything these days. For example, he's a Canadian ex-con struggling to make a legitimate living selling Christmas trees alongside Paul Rudd in "All Is Bright" (out in theaters and VOD today), accidentally famous home video-shooter Abraham Zapruder in this weekend's "Parkland," Friar Lawrence in the latest film incarnation of "Romeo and Juliet" (out next week), a slave trader in Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" (October 18), and the villainous Rhino in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (due out May 2, 2014).

We got the chance to sit down with Giamatti in New York City prior to the release of "All Is Bright" and talked to him about his numerous upcoming roles, the weirdest time a fan spotted him on the street and the feats of strength he and co-star Paul Rudd did...

Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, and Gemma Arterton in Players (2013)
‘Runner Runner’ Reviews: What the Critics Think of Justin Timberlake-Ben Affleck Thriller
Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, and Gemma Arterton in Players (2013)
Critics are advising audiences to sprint in the opposite direction from “Runner Runner.” The new thriller earned a dreck-worthy 9 percent “rotten” rating on the critics aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. To put that in perspective, recent notorious turkeys “The Lone Ranger” and “R.I.P.D.” received “rotten” scores of 31 percent and 14 percent, respectively. It’s a huge step back for Ben Affleck after scoring a Best Picture Oscar for “Argo,” with many reviewers lamenting that the film was reminiscent of the kind of paycheck roles (2003′s “Paycheck,” for one) that got the actor into so much trouble in the mid-aughts. “Runner Runner” opened Friday,...

Producer Mark Gordon Sells Dramas To ABC
Exclusive: The Mark Gordon Company has set up two more drama projects at ABC through the company’s overall deal at ABC Studios — a character-driven procedural written by Tom Donaghy, creator of the ABC drama The Whole Truth, and a project penned by feature scribe Dean Georgaris (Paycheck). Both are executive produced by Gordon and Nick Pepper. The untitled Tom Donaghy drama, which the Mark Gordon Co is producing with ABC Studios-based Michael McDonald, centers on a big city criminologist who is brought in to help local police crack a case involving a shocking string of disappearances. But the chief detective she’s been hired to help is her father — and they haven’t talked in 10 years. The Georgaris-penned Clementine, produced by the Mark Gordon Co and Ilene Staple, centers on a profoundly troubled 28-year-old psychic who sees her life to begin to change in unexpected ways when she...

15 Movie Star Moments That Will Warm Your Cold Heart
Between their frequent arrests, desperate need for attention and outrageously high earnings, celebrities tend to draw a lot of ire from the public. But sometimes it's easy to forget that famous people, just like everyday people, range from vapid and self-absorbed to completely cool, friendly and generous.

With that in mind, we've compiled a list of moments that will hopefully restore your faith in the ability of the rich and famous to be totally awesome.

1. Keanu Reeves Gives Away Loads of His 'Matrix' Money

Keanu Reeves catches a lot of flack for maybe kind of not being the most talented thespian out there ... but when it comes to being a first-rate guy, there's little room for debate. Exhibit A: Keanu Reeves gave an astounding $75 million of his "Matrix" money to the series' special effects and costume design team. According to someone in the know, Keanu "felt that they were the...

I Am Vengeance. I Am The Night. I Am ... Batfleck!
The announcement that Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in "Batman vs. Superman" set the Internet ablaze, with countless fans decrying the decision. This reaction appears to reflect the judgment that Affleck is a bad actor who consistently makes lousy movies, and that his turn in 2003.s "Daredevil" in particular proves he can.t play a superhero. I disagree. Yes, Affleck made "Paycheck," "Pearl Harbor" and "Armageddon," and sure, those films are awful. But it.s not his acting that makes them terrible. It.s the writing. Give him a good script, and his performance does it justice. If you doubt that, check out "Hollywoodland," "The Town" and "Argo." Especially "Argo," in which he plays a resourceful, indomitable CIA agent Batman would recognize as a kindred spirit. What.s more, ...

Your Top Three: Ben Affleck Performances
Your Top Three is a series where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. Fans are still upset about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel (maybe titled Batman vs. Superman). Could this go on for the next year and a half, until the movie actually hits theaters? It just might, but that's a long time and in that time a lot of the naysayers could catch up with some Affleck performances that change their mind. I don't just mean the films on his production slate that we haven't yet seen (such as Runner Runner and the Gone Girl adaptation). I mean his past gigs that maybe aren't being considered because reputations of stuff like his 2003 trio of Daredevil, Gigli and Paycheck are clouding everyone's judgment. No, Affleck...

What Everyone Said That Time Ben Affleck (Sort Of) Played Superman
Ben Affleck
Batman's black armor will not be Ben Affleck's first superhero costume. You already know he played the blind Daredevil in 2003. But he also wore another, even more iconic, superhero outfit: Superman's. In 2006, after a string of cinematic missteps (Gigli, Jersey Girl, Paycheck, Surviving Christmas), Affleck starred in Hollywoodland, a biopic about the mystery behind the suicide of George Reeves, who played the Man of Steel in the fifties TV series Adventures of Superman. While Affleck briefly wears the tights, he also dons Reeves's depressed outlook on playing the superhero — in one scene, he burns his Superman costume to "celebrate" Adventures of Superman's cancellation in 1958. But that cape. Those boots. That single curl. Did he pull it off? Here's a compilation of what the critics had to say.Ben Affleck can act! * "There are degrees of torture, grief, and self-pity in Affleck's performance. But the real surprise...

Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton in Batman (1989)
Opinion: How Ben Affleck can be a good Batman, and what the 'Man of Steel' sequel needs to do to be great
Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton in Batman (1989)
Besides an abiding interest in men who wear masks or spandex (see: Daredevil and Hollywoodland), Ben Affleck shares one more thing in common with Batman: Their big screen careers look exactly alike. There was the sensational start. (Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns; Affleck’s acting breakout with and Oscar-winning script for Good Will Hunting.) There was the embarrassing implosion. (Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin; Affleck in Gigli and the aptly titled Paycheck.) There was the brilliant reboot. (Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy; Affleck’s rightly praised work as actor and director in The Town and the Oscar-winning Argo). Now,...
