Sayonara
Back when interracial marriage was a shady topic (are those dark days coming back?) the U.S. military had some adjustment issues. Full integration of the ranks didn’t remove the anti- Japanese bigotry. James Michener’s novel has been transformed into a big-scale romance, with Marlon Brando coming to terms with a split in loyalty between the flag and his private life. The big shock is that the Paul Osborn’s screenplay doesn’t let the military off easy.

HBO’s Lgbt History: The End
It's the final episode as Manuel has worked his way through all the Lgbt-themed HBO productions.

I began this project because, after watching and recapping Looking here, I became fascinated with the idea that, with that Andrew Haigh show, the cable network had somehow reached peak gay TV even as it also managed to alienate the very viewers it was trying to coax. I wanted to, in a way, put Looking in context by watching everything HBO had produced and aired that had tackled Lgbt issues.

This required a lot of scavenging—despite their shiny HBOGo and HBO Now ventures, a lot of the network’s older and more obscure TV movies and shows remain unattainable. And so I reached back and watched a lot of not so great TV movies from the early 80s, caught up with key “very special episodes” of their most well-known dramas and comedies, and...

HBO’s Lgbt History Oscar Break: 2003 Acting Races
Manuel is working his way through all the Lgbt-themed HBO productions.

Last week we played a fun game of Oscar What If… imagining how Roger Spottiswoode’s And the Band Played On might have shifted the supporting actor and actress categories at the 1993 Academy Awards had it been released theatrically. This week we’re jumping ten years ahead and looking at the 2003 Oscar acting races and trying to suss out whether Jane Anderson’s Normal (which we discussed in depth a while back) could have made waves in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories.

Given that it was released the same year as the towering Angels in America it’s not surprising that Anderson’s Normal (based on her own play) went home empty-handed from all the end of year awards handed out despite featuring two dazzling performances that are usually awards-bait gold: Tom Wilkinson plays Roy Applewood...

One of Sony's Only PS4 Exclusives this Fall Isn't Getting Enough Marketing
It has been well documented that Sony has a rather lackluster Fall lineup of games this year. In terms of exclsuives they have virtually nothing until next year, and even Sony themselves have stepped out to talk about it. So why aren't they pushing hard on the games they Do have coming this Fall?

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none

If you blinked lately you may have missed the fact that Until Dawn released today. Basically Sony’s only exclusive title besides a few remasters for several months and hardly anyone outside of the core gaming community knows. For those not familiar with the game, it is a quick time style movie game that revolves around a B-movie style horror plot.

The people behind the game is what is so fascinating though. They got a big name with Hayden Panettiere to star as the main role in the game.

Jenny’s Wedding | Review
Portrait of Jenny: Heigl’s Performance Buoys Social Issue Context

There are several aspects to admire in Mary Agnes Donoghue’s sophomore directorial effort, Jenny’s Wedding, her first foray into directing since the 1991 Melanie Griffith film, Paradise. It’s most improbable facets are actually its assets, namely a warm central performance from Katherine Heigl as a lesbian who comes out to her wanly conservative nuclear family by announcing her marriage. A film such as this one could’ve had the opportunity to make an indelible mark on the American indie landscape had it been released seven to ten years prior, when the United States was coming out from underneath the shadows of the Bush Regime and the Lgbt community was in dire need of positive cinematic depictions meant to inspire hope in the eventuality of equality from the likes of trending, A-list actors at their peak.

Though this filmed...

Fantasia 2015: ‘Tangerine’ may just be the most important film of 2015
Tangerine

Directed by Sean Baker

Written by Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch

USA, 2015

Director Sean Baker (Starlet, Prince of Broadway, Take Out) was reportedly inspired to make Tangerine, after observing the customers of a donut shop in Hollywood’s red-light district. Tangerine’s stars are a pair of first-time actresses, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor. They play two trans sex workers – Sin-Dee, who’s just been released from a 28-day stint in prison for drug possession – and her best friend Alexandra who prepares for a gig singing at a local nightclub. The film follows the duo over the course of a day – opening on a donut shop which serves as one of the key locations the two transitioning male-to-female call girls hang out. It’s the morning of Christmas Eve at the sketchy intersection of Santa Monica and Highland in Los Angeles and Alexandra and Sin-Dee are sharing a red-and-green sprinkled donut.

"Birdman" Flies High at SAG Awards, Eddie Redmayne Surprises
If you're betting on "Boyhood" to win big at the upcoming Academy Awards, think again! Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" was deemed to be the big Oscar frontrunner but a double-dose of guild awards over the weekend tamed those prospects down. First, the Producers Guild of America gave their top honor to Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," and the Screen Actors Guild followed suit!

"Birdman" took home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award! But, since the movie is about acting, this award is just fitting.

My biggest surprise, and it'a welcome surprise indeed, was "The Theory of Everything's" Eddie Redmayne taking home the Outstanding Male Actor trophy. Sorry Michael Keaton! I think Redmayne truly gave the Performance of the Year award!

The usual suspects took home the movie acting awards with wins for Julianne Moore for Best Actress in "Still Alice," J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash,...

Golden Globes Predictions: Who Will Win, Who Should Win
Ellar Coltrane in Boyhood (2014)
The Golden Globes are chosen by a small group of 80-odd full and part-time journalists in Los Angeles — how hard can they be to predict?

Pretty hard, sometimes. Where the tastes of the 6,000-plus Oscar voters tend to even out and make sense, there’s often something confounding about the priorities and agendas of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s motley assortment of voters. But knowing that they like big stars, they like to be on winning teams and they like to spread the wealth to keep everybody happy, TheWrap has taken a look at Sunday’s categories to offer our predictions.

Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, and Allison Tolman in Fargo (2014)
FX doesn't submit 'Fargo' as 'Transparent,' 'True Detective' lead WGA TV nominations
Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, and Allison Tolman in Fargo (2014)
The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Olive Kitteridge Review: Frances McDormand Stars in HBO’s Maine-Focused Miniseries
It's that time of year, in between HBO's fall and winter series, where it runs a highbrow miniseries event that immediately flies to the front of Emmy contender lists. These tend to be acting showcases based on literary adaptations; Mildred Pierce, starring Kate Winslet, is a recent example. This year, it's Olive Kitteridge, based on a 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Elizabeth Strout. The novel, like the miniseries, explores a number of vignettes in and around a small, coastal Maine town, connected through the middle-aged Olive, over the course of 25 years. Hit the jump for why "I'm waiting for the dog to die so I can shoot myself." Directed by Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are Alright) and adapted by Jane Anderson (Normal), Olive Kitteridge is an unflinching survey of many lives, through the lens of a very acerbic one. The series opens with Olive (an uncompromising Frances McDormand) kneeling on a...

Frances McDormand in Olive Kitteridge (2014)
Review: The long and short of HBO's 'Olive Kitteridge'
Frances McDormand in Olive Kitteridge (2014)
The last time HBO turned a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel set in Maine into a miniseries, it was 2005's "Empire Falls," which boasted a star-studded cast but was exactly the wrong length at four hours: too short to properly tell all of the books' stories and give the audience the necessary feeling of living among these characters, and much too long for the thin slice the filmmakers were able to carve out of the book. HBO's new miniseries "Olive Kitteridge" (it debuts Sunday night at 9) is also adapted from a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel set in Maine, and also clocks in at four hours. And though I haven't read the Elizabeth Strout book on which it's based, it certainly feels like the same mistake has been made about its length. Directed by Lisa Cholodenko ("The Kids Are All Right") and written by HBO movie veteran Jane Anderson ("Normal," "The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom...

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective (2014)
'True Detective' will submit for Emmy contention as a drama
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective (2014)
If this summer's Emmy races are half as exciting as this spring's jockeying for Emmy category position, we're gonna have a real barnburner on our hands come August. Two weeks ago, Netflix fired the first salvo, electing to submit "Orange Is The New Black" in the comedy category after going as a drama for Golden Globes contention. Personally, I think that was the smart and correct choice and, in a perfect world, "Orange" could fill out the supporting actress field on its own. [That won't happen. But it should.] Then earlier this morning, Showtime unexpectedly announced that after three years as a drama for Emmy purposes, "Shameless" will submit as a comedy this year. I'd always advocated "Shameless" as a comedy in years past and I would put Emmy Rossum in any open field of actress contenders, regardless of category. Still, I'm not quite sure how I feel about the move in this particular season, which...

'American Horror Story': Five Things to Know About 'Coven'
Emma Roberts in American Horror Story (2011)
The stars and producer behind American Horror Story used their platform Friday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour to cryptically dodge questions about Coven, the mysterious third installment of the FX anthology. While co-creator Ryan Murphy was scratched from his scheduled participation in the panel -- filming just started on Coven last week in New Orleans and he's also shooting The Normal Heart in New York -- executive producer Tim Minear kept stars Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett from spilling too much about what to expect from season three. François Hollande: from Mr Normal to Mr Weak
François Hollande, France's first Socialist president for nearly 20 years, has had a nightmarish first year

The freshly cut inscription on the marble "tombstone" was savage and to the point: "Betrayal! Here lie the promises of F. Hollande which were made to workers and their families in Florange on 24 February 2012. From the steelworkers of Lorraine." With barely suppressed anger and bitterness, Frédéric Weber, a local union official, explained why it was sitting in his office: "When François Hollande was campaigning for the presidency, he said to me: 'I will be the president of change.' He came to Florange and he said that he would fight a war against the kind of finance that closed our steelworks. But he has bowed down before the markets and screwed the workers instead."

Few countries do gesture politics with as much panache as the French. But the anger last week in this picturesque corner of north-eastern France,...

"Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy" On PBS, January 1
By Eddy Friedfeld

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none

When asked why most of Sid Caesar’s writers were young and Jewish, the late’ great Larry Gelbart replied, “Because most of our parents were old and Jewish.”

The answer to why there were so many Jews in Broadway musicals may not be as glibly succinct, but in Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy, which debuts on PBS on January 1 at 9:30 p.m., the answers are insightful and amazingly entertaining.

Written, produced and directed by Emmy-Award Winner Michael Kantor (Broadway- The American Musical and Make ‘Em Laugh- The Funny Business of America), the 90 minute documentary tries to answer the question of why the Broadway musical proven to be such fertile territory for Jewish artists of all kind, featuring icons from Broadway’s golden age, including Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, the Gershwins, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim...

Film Review: Jack Reacher
He has no possessions, and he owns only the clothing on his back; he’s a drifter who answers to no one, has no friends, and moves from town to town to make right what is wrong. He is the Man With No Name…oh wait, wait, sorry, it’s Jack Reacher, and throughout this movie people can’t stop saying his name. By the fourth or fifth time somebody gruffly asks, “Who the hell is Jack Reacher?” it becomes a bit laughable, but it’s another mention of the character’s name that sparks the plot of the movie.

James Barr (Joseph Sikora), an ex-military sniper has just been booked for a horrific and seemingly random shooting massacre in downtown Pittsburgh – a plot point somewhat unfortunately timed considering the recent real life tragedy in Connecticut – and all evidence points to him. When he’s taken in by detective Emerson...

The 2012 Hot in Hollywood Awards: Results
AfterElton readers know what's Hot in Hollywood. We're a community of voracious yet discerning pop culture consumers, so when it comes to TV, movies, web series and celebrities... tourniquet be damned, our finger is on the bloody pulse! This year in our first annual Hot in Hollywood poll our readers cast over 800,000 votes (yes, you read that correctly) crowning winners in 21 different categories, everything from Favorite Movie Beefcake to Guilty TV Pleasure to Child Actor We Don't Hate.

There were some tight races (Favorite Web Series, Favorite TV Beefcake and Greatest TV Villain) and a couple gimmes (Teen Wolf obviously had a lock on Favorite TV Sidekick), but the big surprise was how evenly distributed the love was. No single TV or film project took home more than one or two awards.

All in all, it was an impressive launch for the first annual Hot in Hollywood Awards, and our...

Tom Wilkinson: The full Tommy
Hadley Freeman wants to talk to Tom Wilkinson about awards, exotic locations and hanging out with Johnny Depp. But he just wants to talk about failure, lying low – and their shared hatred of jeans

'Maybe I want to pack acting in," says Tom Wilkinson, one of Britain's best-loved actors, in an endearingly rumpled voice. Why would you do that? You've been nominated for Oscars and you're about to fly off to start filming The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp. Acting seems to be working out pretty well for you.

"Oh, I don't know," he replies, as casually as if he's just commented on the weather, as opposed to telling a journalist something that would give his agent a fit. "I haven't really thought about it in any coherent sense. I'm not a good traveller. I never used to mind all the time away from home, the hanging around, but now I think,...

The 2012 Golden Globes and Gay Degrees of Separation
If you followed @afterellen's Golden Globes tweet-along at #showusyourglobes, you know that this year was almost as full of Gay Goodness as last year, even though we expected the awards to straighten up.

But we also expected Ricky Gervais not to be invited back, so what do we know?

Before we proceed with a recap of the festivities, I must put to rest any and all rumors about why I am doing this recap when awards shows are Dorothy Snarker territory. Ms. Snarker, faced with the choice of staying up all night writing about the Golden Globes or staying up all night partying in Vegas with lesbian softball players, chose the latter. I know, I know. But we will get through this together. On with the show.

The Red Carpet show-before-the-show wasted no time in affirming that the acting community's favorite designers had chosen "show us your globes" as their...

"American Horror Story" Recap 1.09: Dahlia'll Never Go Away Again
After an intense and disturbing episode last week - let's call it Tate Misbehavin'! - American Horror Story dialed down the intensity last night and instead delivered a soapy tale steeped in Hollywood nostalgia, supernatural terror and high camp.

I of course mean this as the highest form of compliment.

So throw on your best fishnet stockings and fascinator and let's cut this baby apart, shall we? Oh - sorry, Thaddeus, no offense.

On a sunny California day, an old-timey cab pulls up in front of the Murder House. A lady in killer hooker pumps gets out and struts up the walk, passing a woman dragging along a boy in what looks like orthodontic headgear from the Hoover administration. She turns and smiles - it's Mena Suvari! She wears a flower in her hair - and since we already know what role Ms. MeMe has been brought on board to play,...

Sacha Baron Cohen has been a journalist, a fashion designer and whatever it was that Ali G was. Now, he’ll be playing a deposed dictator as well as said dictator’s lookalike. The lookalike might get the throne, but the dictator just might get Anna Faris.

'Lone Star' review: Fox strikes black gold with TV's newest antihero
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Fox pulls off no easy stunt with "Lone Star," a drama set to the backdrop of Texas grifters and big oil, in making a endearing underdog out of a selfish con-man with a double life -- and a gorgeous, adoring woman in each of them.

And both our and their affection is bound to star James Wolk, who takes what would be a relatively engaging series and turns it into something much more exciting with the charm he injects into every scene -- regardless of which persona he's playing.

Robert Allen -- or Bob, depending on the scene -- is a second generation criminal who we meet in the middle of two big jobs: one, getting the citizens of a dusty, rural town to invest in an oil field that he doesn't even own and another, infiltrating a major corporation in Houston...

Frances McDormand Produces Every Secret Thing
Academy Award winner Frances McDormand (Fargo, Burn After Reading) has lined up two projects, according to Deadline, in which she will assume the role of producer.

McDormand looks set to produce a small screen adaptation of Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Olive Kitteridge, a project currently set up at HBO.

The deal, which is still being negotiated, will also see McDormand cast as the town’s titular maths teacher providing the pilot goes to series. An ensemble drama being shaped by Jane Anderson (HBO’s “Normal”), the project will allow McDormand to honour her other acting obligations.

McDormand is also attatched to produce a big screen adaptation of Laura Lippman’s crime novel Every Secret Thing, which has already been written and submitted by Nicole Holofcener. With Academy Award nominee Diane Lane (Untraceable) set to star as a detective tasked with investigating the disappearance of numerous children, Every Secret Thing...

Frances McDormand Playing Producer Role
Frances McDormand
Exclusive: Appearing in a new role--producer--Frances McDormand has set at HBO a potential series adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Elizabeth Strout novel Olive Kitteridge. Separately, she has attached Diane Lane to star in a Nicole Holofcener-scripted feature adaptation of Laura Lippman's crime novel Every Secret Thing. McDormand got both projects off the ground and while she will play the town's seventh grade math teacher Olive Kitteridge if the pilot script Jane Anderson's writing becomes an HBO series, McDormand doesn't plan to appear on camera in Every Secret Thing. Perhaps it's being in the creative orbit of her writer/director husband Joel Coen, or a way to creatively fill the gaps between acting jobs while raising their family, but McDormand has self-started a producing venture that has no staff or company name. She has made two promising projects happen and has others percolating, including a stage musical. McDormand...

Comic-Con 2010: The Goon Production Update and Footage
Normal 0 Eric Powell's The Goon is still looking for studio but producer William Fincher and stars Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown are confident that someone will pick it up. The animation, from Blur Studios, reminds me of a noiresque Wallace and Gromit with tommy guns, zombies and cigars. Judging from the footage I saw, I tend to agree.

The storyline will be a 100% authentic to the comic book and the teams determination to make the movie their way is evidence of that. Rather than pitch the book, the team decided to create footage to show studios. Moving pitcures are worth a billion words so to speak.

Footage! Glorious footage. The animation is awesome! Absolutely beautiful. Frankie's (voiced by Paul Giamatti) parked on a bar stool barking at a bartender. Giametti's in full Brooklynese mode. In comes the Goon (Clancy Brown) with a barrel-tied zombie that he plunks down next to Frankie.

Larry Charles to Direct Jim Carrey in Pierre Pierre
Larry Charles has signed on to direct Pierre Pierre, an upcoming comedy with Jim Carrey attached to star as an obnoxious Frenchman transporting a painting from Paris to London. Charles recently directed the comparable antics of Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat and Bruno, and will take over the project from Jason Reitman (Juno), who was previously attached to the project before he dropped out. Deadline reports that Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton sold the script for $1 million two years ago, but following Reitman’s departure from the project and the collapse of Fox Atomic, the project went into turnaround. Now that Larry Charles has signed on to direct the $20 million film, producers Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Brian Sher will shop Pierre Pierre to studios once again.

Jonah Hill on ‘Get Him to the Greek’, ’21 Jumpstreet’, and his directorial debut

But on the eve of his second starring role in Get Him to the Greek – as well as his third, in the acclaimed independent dramedy Cyrus – Hill wants audiences to view him based on these performances rather than the ones which initially earned him the stardom he now enjoys. “

I think [people should] judge me on this year and judge me on next year,” Hill said during a roundtable interview Sunday in Hollywood, Calif. “Because between Cyrus and this movie, I think both characters are completely unrecognizable from my characters in Superbad and Knocked Up.” Hollywood News joined a sizable...
