Movies about gambling follow a simple mantra: A character or characters go up against the odds, eschewing safe bets for a risky, life-changing move. The stakes are high, but the rewards are plentiful. Our protagonists encounter numerous obstacles during their journey and often incur severe losses. They almost always experience a moment of self-reflection and are faced with the ultimate choice: go all in or fold. Rinse and repeat.
Hundreds of movies about gambling exist to tell this same story time and again, with slight variations on the formula. Audiences turn up in droves to watch these powerful morality tales play out on the silver screen. And why not? The gambling genre presents the hero's journey in its purest form. It's the quintessential underdog tale, except rather than score the final shot in the big game, characters risk life and limb for a chance to beat the house, upend the establishment,...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. And sometimes if we’re lucky we talk to movie stars about their B-Sides!
Today we talk to the great Eric Bana about Eric Bana B-Sides on the occasion of the release of his new film, Force of Nature: The Dry 2, now available in theaters and on VOD.
Our B-Sides today include: Lucky You, Romulus, My Father, and The Secret Scripture. Bana discusses why Lucky You maybe didn’t connect with audiences in 2007, how Romulus, My Father is actually quite the A-Side in Australia, and the need to be malleable when working with somebody like director Jim Sheridan.
We also talk about Bana’s detective influences for the Aaron Falk character in The Dry films, why...

That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.
Check out the “White House Plumbers” trailer:
The platform will head to the pitch on May 16 with a three-part soccer docuseries “Angel City.” The series goes behind the scenes with the groundbreaking Los Angeles-based professional women’s soccer team, Angel City Football Club. It reveals the origin story through the 2022 inaugural season of the female-founded and led team — including owners and investors Uzo Aduba,...

HBO Max will add several exciting new TV show premieres and movies to its catalog in May 2023 before being rebranded as “Max.” After launching in 2020 as the primary streaming home for Warner Bros – now Warner Bros. Discovery – titles, HBO Max is officially losing the first half of its name in a rebranding come May 23. After this point, the streaming service will be launched as Max, which will also come with some changes to subscription tiers. Nevertheless, HBO Max will still be releasing new hit titles between May 1 and 22 under the original brand, which includes the premiere of a highly anticipated HBO miniseries and the arrival of classic film franchises.

Eminem just landed a Grammy nomination for his song “Lucky You,” which features fellow emcee Joyner Lucas. The single, which comes off of Slim Shady’s “Kamikaze” album, is an interesting Best Rap Song contender, as Eminem takes a shot at the Grammys in his version of the chorus.
Here are Em’s relevant lyrics:
I done won a couple Grammys, but I sold my soul to get ‘em
Wasn’t in it for the trophies, just the f—in’ recognition
F—‘s the difference?
Joyner’s bars, which start the song, are a bit more complimentary of the top trophy in their industry. A bit.

Eminem and Joyner Lucas attract an army of imitators in the new video for “Lucky You.”
No, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. The two rappers stroll through an empty post-industrial wasteland delivering their lines in double-time. As they walk, they’re stalked by an ever-growing number of figures wearing black hoodies with eyes that glow bright red. During a bizarre and over-long comic interlude, Lucas and Eminem realize that their stalkers will imitate every move they make, so they lead their followers through a series of goofy dances.

The 13-song set follows 2017’s Revival, which included the songs “Framed,” “River” featuring Ed Sheeran and “Walk on Water” featuring Beyoncé. Earlier this year, he dropped a remix of album track “Chloraseptic” featuring 2 Chainz and Phresher.
Kamikaze includes features from his Bad Meets Evil partner Royce 5’9″ (in June, Eminem appeared in Royce’s “Caterpillar” video), Joyner Lucas and two tracks feature Jessie Reyez.

A spiritual successor to Road Rash that is set in a Grand Theft Auto-style open world sounds like an excellent idea, doesn’t it?
Well, as it turns out, an idea isn’t all you need when it comes to making games. If it was, I’d be a multi-billionaire that wouldn’t be talking to the likes of you right now. Unfortunately, Road Rage appears to be an idea with little else of substance behind it.
The concept behind the game is exactly as I’ve described. It’s motorcycle combat in a GTA-like world. An underground group of bikers in the city of Ashen have decided that the time has come to rise up and overthrow the oppressors that have turned their formerly booming homeland into a dark and murderous place. To do this, they’ll take part in a series of motorcycle races, elimination events, stunt challenges,...

When the sad news broke last week that Curtis Hanson died, it occurred to me that I’ve unconsciously associated Hanson with death for almost 20 years now. Odd, because his movies aren’t generally violent. Indeed, they aren’t generally anything, really, apart from “worth seeing.” (Notable exception: 2007’s poker drama Lucky You, which decisively contradicts its own title.) Hanson did make a string of thrillers in the early ’90s—Bad Influence, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, The River Wild—but those are primarily tension machines; only Cradle has a decent body count, and its deaths are too cartoonishly lurid to rattle anyone. The rest of Hanson’s oeuvre is less bloody still, ranging from the teen sex comedy Losin’ It (starring a not-yet-famous Tom Cruise) to Eminem’s ...

One of the most celebrated film makers of the last four decades has died. Here’s how the New York Times reported it….
Curtis Hanson, the film director whose adaptation of the James Ellroy noir novel “L.A. Confidential” won him an Academy Award, died on Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 71.
The death was confirmed by Officer Jenny Houser, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. She said that officers had been called to the house shortly before 5 p.m., and that Mr. Hanson had died of natural causes.
Julie Mann, his business manager, said Mr. Hanson had been struggling for some time with a form of dementia.
Let’s take a look at his long career. His first screen credit is for helping to adapt H.P. Lovecraft’s short story in the 1970 American International Pictures’ The Dunwich Horror starring Sandra Dee and Dean Stockwell.

Last night, the cinematic world lost one of its own. Filmmaker Curtis Hanson passed away at the age of 71. The cause of death has been placed as natural causes. Hanson worked in the industry for well over 40 years, writing and directing movies that will stand the test of time. Oscar took notice in the late 90’s when Hanson made what most consider to be his masterpiece with L.A. Confidential, but he was a well known artist before then. He worked steadily on the big screen, also putting out the top notch HBO TV movie Too Big to Fail about five years ago. He will be missed in a big way. Hanson was an Academy Award winner and three time nominee, all for L.A. Confidential back in 1997. That highly regarded crime drama was a tale of corruption in the 1950’s, looking at how very different policemen dealt with enforcing the law.

Curtis Hanson, the Oscar-winning director of films including L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile, and In Her Shoes, has died. He was 71 years old. Hanson was born March 24, 1945 in Reno, Nevada but grew up in Los Angeles. After dropping out of high school, he pursued opportunities as a freelance photographer and editor of the now-defunct Cinema magazine before turning to screenwriting, which bore fruit with 1970's The Dunwich Horror, a Roger Corman-produced fright film that he co-wrote with Henry Rosenbaum and Ronald Silkosky. Hanson subsequently moved to directing with Sweet Kill, a 1973 horror film about a sexually-repressed man who finds gratification in murdering the women he sleeps with. That was followed by a string of other low-budget efforts in multiple genres, including Losin' It, a teen comedy starring a pre-Risky Business Tom Cruise. Though he worked consistently through the '70s and '80s, Hanson wouldn't achieve mainstream recognition until...

After 35 years, the DeLorean is going to make an epic comeback. Wynne and DeLorean Motors are actually going back into production! How freakin' cool is that!? This version isn't going to have a new modern updated design. They're using the same exact design of the classic 1982 car. CEO Stephen Wynne told Kprc:
"It's fantastic. It's a game-changer for us. We've been wanting this to happen."
Wynne and DeLorean Motors will manufacture the cars in America for the first time, and they plan on building about 300 new cars, which will retail for around $100,000. They will be coming in 2017, and the car will have 300-400 horsepower.

Lucky you: you’re 28 but you look about 16. It’s all very well having people tell you that you’ll have a youthful face until the day you die, but does that really excuse any of the problems you have to deal with on a daily life?
It’s not all bad: you can still use your student card for basically everything even though you’re almost thirty: Topshop, the cinema, some restaurants. It can pay to look younger than what you are, because apparently life is cheaper when people think you’re under 18.
Still, it’s annoying. Sometimes you look in the mirror and curse the person who looks like a teenager looking back. Some days you’re asked your age for various reasons over ten times; and that look of disbelief on people’s faces is getting a bit old. So is having to provide your mantra ‘I know,...

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"Gone Girl"
David Fincher's latest dark 'n' twisty drama stars Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck as a pair of beautiful people who do terrible things to each other. This adaptation of Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel is worth it just for the scene in which Tyler Perry, as a high-powered lawyer who specializes in cases where men are accused of murdering their wives, throws gummy bears at Affleck's head.
"Jimi: All Is By My Side"
This Jimi Hendrix biopic got mixed reviews, but André Benjamin's performance as a young Jimi on the verge of stardom is pretty sizzling.
"Wetlands"
This German film is for those with particularly strong stomachs, but if you're up for it, this is a wild ride.

Robert Downey Jr has revealed that his The Judge co-star Robert Duvall did not remember that the pair had worked together before.
Downey Jr was speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show about his new film, when he told the host that Duvall "doesn't really recall" working on the same films as him.
They appeared in 1989's The Gingerbread Man and 2007's Lucky You together, making The Judge their third shared project.
He added: "I've also gone up to him at restaurants and went, 'Mr Duvall, I just want to...' and he's like, 'What?' and then he didn't know who I was.
"He also said that his favourite movie of mine is Chaplin, even though he hasn't seen it!"
He joked: "When you're Robert Duvall you can say that sort of stuff!"
The Judge stars Downey Jr as Hank, a successful lawyer who moves back home after his mother dies.

If you're as respected as Robert Duvall, you can pretty much get away with anything — including totally burning Robert Downey Jr. Downey told Jimmy Fallon that his The Judge co-star didn't remember the two previous times they'd been in the same film (1989's The Gingerbread Man and 2007's Lucky You), and that when he used to see Duvall out on the town, he'd attempt to pay homage — only to be politely rebuffed. The director of Deliver Us From Evil, Scott Derrickson, chats to us about the film, Deus Ex, and horror for kids...
After drumming up decent business in the Us at the start of July, Sinister director Scott Derrickson's latest film, Deliver Us From Evil, is finally in UK cinemas.
Currently on the set of Sinister 2, before he heads off to direct Marvel's Doctor Strange (and you won't be surprised to hear that's a movie that we couldn't explore in this interview), he spared us time for a chat about what he's done, and what he's up to. Without further ado...
Welcome to the world of international staggered release dates! We get Deliver Us From Evil this week in the UK, whereas it had a July 4th weekend release in the Us. It seems to me that it's a more natural fit over here than there.

While popular opinion of the Grammys mashup of Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar appeared to be divided, there's definitely one person who enjoyed it: Taylor Swift. During the performance, social media seemed to be split between snark ("What did we do to the Grammys to deserve this?" Buzzfeed's Ryan Broderick wrote in a Vine) and elation ("Omg This Performance Is Insane" Buzzfeed itself tweeted), but Swift's thoughts on the performance were pretty clear: She spent the entire time lip-synching and jiving along. Please enjoy this Vine of Swift dancing; GIFs will be swiftly arriving tomorrow, so you'll soon be able...

Day 2 of I'm a Celebrity and Matthew Wright is already munching on a camel toe. Don't worry, you haven't stumbled upon an X-rated version of the Ant & Dec reality show. This is just the customary animal-eating Bushtucker Trial.
And what a smorgasbord of tasty treats the hosting Geordie duo lined up for this year's unlucky celebrity duo, Wright and Joey Essex. Joining the camel toe on the menu were ostrich willy, pig brain, a scorpion, a turkey testicle and a pint of cock (roach) cola. Eat your heart out, Nigella.
It was a bit less 'lick your lips with anticipation', and more 'wipe your mouth and clean off the mixture of vomit and the inside of a turkey's ball'.
MasterChef and The Great British Bake Off this was not. Although, Joey and Matthew did try their best to pitch for careers as restaurant critics.

This weekend, 20th Century Fox went all in on "Runner Runner," a $30 million drama about online poker starring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, and even though just about everyone bet high on it, the film went bust. Pundits predicted it might debut as high as $15 million, but it earned only about half of that, an estimated $7.6 million, opening in third place at the box office.
Why did the film flop? There were a number of reasons, some of them expected (strong competition from fellow grown-up drama "Gravity"), some of them not (sneak attack by Somali pirates!). Here's the rundown:
Justin Timberlake: He may be the biggest pop star around, but he's still not a bankable movie star. According to Box Office Mojo, his wide-release movies open with an average of $14.5 million. His last lead role, in the 2011 sci-fi thriller "in Time," opened with just $12.1 million two Octobers ago.

There's been no less than three attempts to bring The Hulk to the big screen in the past decade - 2003's "Hulk" with Eric Bana, 2008's "The Incredible Hulk" with Edward Norton, and 2012 "The Avengers" with Mark Ruffalo.
Ruffalo's portrayal received the most acclaim, while the 2003 film with Bana is often considered the weakest of the three. The film's director Ang Lee attempted a distinct take on the character which fans didn't respond to well.
Now Bana, speaking with The Huffington Post, says he doesn't regret making the film. Even so, he is glad he didn't have to play the role again:
"I'm proud of what it tried to do. I apologize to all those people who were so angry about it...I'm fascinated by the people who hated that movie and feel compelled to watch it again, which always blows my mind. But, yeah, it is what it is...

The charismatic star of the Iron Man trilogy earned $75m in the past year. Not bad for a drug addict the studios once shunned
Fifteen years ago, Robert Downey Jr was sleeping on his assistant's sofa, addicted to heroin, cocaine and alcohol, and with only the first of several prison and rehab spells behind him. Even in Hollywood, where the most extreme appetites will be accommodated by the entertainment industry, his screw-ups had become too extravagant and numerous to hush up. His $2m asking-price had dropped 75% and he was virtually uninsurable.
Concerned friends described him as a "lovable tornado". Film-maker Mike Figgis, who directed Downey as an artist with Aids in 1997's One Night Stand, recalls him arriving for their introductory meeting barefoot, high and brandishing a handgun. "Why have you got a gun?" asked a concerned Figgis. "Oh, I didn't want to leave it in my car," Downey deadpanned.

Actress Antje Traue takes us through the process of becoming Faora in Man of Steel, opening in theaters everywhere June 14
While this weekend's Man of Steel does feature a slew of big-name actors (Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, and Russell Crowe), there will be a few faces many will be seeing for the first time as well. The most notable of which is Antje Traue, who horror fans may remember as Nadia in 2009's Pandorum. The lovely German actress plays the ruthless Faora, the trusted warrior of General Zod (Michael Shannon) who has quite a presence on screen, although, as I mentioned in my review, I really wish they used her more. I recently had the chance to sit down with Antje Traue to discuss all things Man of Steel, hitting theaters June 14. Here's what she had to say.
What is it like just coming in for something like this?...

What happens when you tell a pastor that God talks to you? He's very impressed, apparently.
In The Huffington Post's exclusive clip above from the second episode of NBC's "Save Me" (two-episode premiere on Thurs., May 23 at 8 p.m. Et), Beth Harper (Anne Heche) opens up to the pastor at her church about a very ... interesting talent she's developed after having a near-death run-in with a sandwich.
"Pastor Jim? I have an espresso maker I'd like to donate to the church if you can use it somehow," she says, before adding, "God talks me."
"Lucky you!" he exclaims.
Here's how NBC describes the first two episodes of "Save Me":
"The Book Of Beth" (Pilot)
"Save Me" premieres with Emmy nominee Anne Heche starring as Beth Harper, an absentee wife and mother who suffers a dramatic near-death experience and is revived only to discover that she now receives messages from God.

Moving on so soon, Scarlett? Scarlett Johansson unceremoniously split from her advertising executive boyfriend Nate Naylor after dating for one year in October. Now the 27-year-old "Hitchcock" actress has been spotted getting cuddly with Frenchman Romain Dauriac.
