'Reacher' Recasts How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy Star, 43, Ahead of Season 4
Image
Reacher’s next case just got a whole lot more complicated — and it’s bringing in a fresh face to help crack it. Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette (HBO’s Barry) has joined the cast of Reacher Season 4 in a recasting, according to Deadline. He steps into the role of small-town cop Jacob Merrick, a character described as pivotal in the upcoming season’s adaptation of Gone Tomorrow, the 13th book in Lee Child’s long-running Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) series. Rodriguez-Marquette replaces Jay Baruchel, who was originally announced for the role just weeks ago but exited due to personal reasons. According to sources close to production, the casting was a lightning-fast turnaround: Rodriguez-Marquette was hired the same day the role became available and flown to set just days later.

In Gone Tomorrow, Reacher finds himself entangled in a deadly web after a tragic encounter on a New York subway. As always, it...

Jennifer Morrison
It takes a certain caliber of actors to move seamlessly through the entertainment industry and make just enough waves while avoiding the pitfalls.

Call of Duty Release Update Is Good News for Xbox Game Pass Players
Image
Despite acquiring Activision Blizzard last year, Xbox has yet to add any of the publisher’s titles to its Game Pass subscription service. That will of course change very soon when Diablo IV hits the service on March 28. But what about Activision Blizzard’s biggest Aaa franchise?

Xbox has yet to announce when first-person shooter behemoth Call of Duty will arrive on Game Pass despite the fact that there’s a new installment in the series set to be released later this year. Most importantly, will Call of Duty 2024, which is rumored to be set during the Gulf War, get a day one release on the service?

“Our intent is the full portfolio of games from ZeniMax, Activision Blizzard, and Xbox Game Studios will be on Game Pass, day one,” Microsoft Gaming chief Phil Spencer told Stephen Totilo’s Game File newsletter. Spencer stopped short of confirming Call of Duty...

Stanley Kubrick in Orange mécanique (1971)
Angry Blackmen The Legend of Abm Review: Uneasy Listening
Stanley Kubrick in Orange mécanique (1971)
“When I blow up, I’m gonna go nuts,” Quentin Branch declares on “Stanley Kubrick,” a track from Angry Blackmen’s The Legend of Abm. The Chicago-based experimental hip-hop duo’s beats are distorted and dissonant, with traces of industrial-rock influence paired with a punk-tinged aggression. This contrast in sounds is mirrored by their vocal styles: Brian Warren offers a melodic touch, rapping in a quick sing-song manner with few pauses, while Branch leans toward more straightforward shouting.

Angry Blackmen’s dedication to this mode of uneasy listening is uncompromising throughout. The album’s production is enveloping, with sharp changes of dynamics and sustained, ominous electronics. “Fna” opens with blown-out 808s, while “Dead Men Tell No Lies” ends on the repeated title phrase, filtered so it barely even sounds like a human voice.

The Legend of Abm finds Branch and Warren examining their professional ambition on tracks like “Grind.” Lyrics...

New Call Of Duty Black Ops Can Fix The Series’ Worst Problem
Image
Leaks suggest that the next Call of Duty game will be a Black Ops sequel set during the Gulf War, which could bring back the classic Cod experience. Releasing the next Cod game on Microsoft's Game Pass would address the series' biggest problems. Microsoft's merger with Activision-Blizzard makes a Game Pass release for Cod more likely, as Microsoft has shown a willingness to release big Aaa titles on the platform, but an official announcement is still pending.

New leaks suggest that the next game in the Call of Duty franchise will be another installment of Black Ops, which could be the kick in the pants the series needs. The annual franchise, which most recently saw the release of the lackluster Modern Warfare 3, is starting to stagnate. Concerns over its escalating price point, widening gaps caused by pay-to-win policies, increasingly enormous file sizes, and slowing trickle of new content have...

15 Best Skateboarding Movies, Ranked
Image
Although the dangerous street sport rose to prominence during the 1970s, the best skateboarding movies are few and far between. The best examples of the subgenre usually belong to documentary films, with their narrative counterparts failing to register with the same sort of lasting authenticity. The dramatized versions that do resonate usually feature a real-life professional skater in a starring role or as an executive producer or technical consultant. That being said, general moviegoers tend to favor skating movies more than critics have over the years.

Movies about skateboarding continue to be fan-favorite films with viewers. They're a certain type of genre of sports movie that is different than most and oftentimes are more dramatic in their storytelling. There are also a large number of documentary movies about skateboarding that have been made either about the professional skateboarding industry itself or about particular skaters, but there are also fictionalized movies about skateboarding as well.

Mimosa

By Archie Bongiovanni

Surely Books /272 pages/ $24.99

The world of graphic novels has expanded enough to accommodate material for every age, interest, and persuasion. It’s refreshing to see imprints arise to direct material to these specific audiences and one of the biggest splashes has come from Abrams; Surely Books, curated by Mariko Tamaki. In just year, the new line has commanded respect and praise for their releases.

The latest, coming in March, is Mimosa from Archie Bongiovanni. The writer/artist from Minneapolis has been contributing graphic literature since 2019 and has focused steadily on the queer world and the families formed.

What makes this story compelling is that it focuses on aging and remaining relevant as life moves on. We pick up on a quartet of friends who have been together for a decade, having found one another as waiters and staying together though meetups, breakups, and everything in between.

Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 6 Review: Axe and Grind
Bob Odenkirk in Better Call Saul (2015)
This Better Call Saul review contains spoilers.

Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 6

Some people need to learn the hard way, and that means sometimes getting caught can be a blessing. If an authority figure or the law can check your bad behavior early, perhaps it can keep that behavior from leveling up an unhealthy notch, reaching an extreme, or skidding off the rails entirely. If Walter White had been busted on his first cook, maybe that ultimately would have been better for him and his family. He would have likely done some time, sure, but think of all the collateral damage and emotional turmoil that could have been avoided. Consequences can keep things from spiraling out of control.

For the first time since Better Call Saul has begun, I think I know where Kim Wexler’s story is headed. There’s still plenty of time for a swerve to take...

Review: Alice In Chains Make Numb Mood Music on ‘ Rainier Fog’
Layne Staley
With scuzzbucket, crunchy guitar lines and stabbing drums, Alice in Chains’ Rainier Fog stays the course the band has been following for the last three decades: unapologetic, gut-checking, introspective grunge metal. But something about it feels incomplete.

The record is the band’s third since the death of its iconic frontman, Layne Staley, whose high-tension vocals gave Alice In Chains enough drama to kick them into the same league as their Seattle brethren, and they’ve nevertheless proven they could carry on without him on 2009’s surprisingly tuneful Black Gives Way to Blue.

Frightfest 2015: ‘Bloodsucking Bastards’ Review
Stars: Fran Kranz, Emma Fitzpatrick, Joey Kern, Jacquelyn Palmquist, Pedro Pascal | Written by Dr. God, Ryan Mitts | Directed by Brian James O’Connell

Horror and comedy have always gone hand in hand. Laughs often alleviate the tension and who doesn’t crack a smile at the goriest, over the top scenes of horror? But the true horror-comedy, a purposeful bland of the two genres can be trickier to pull off than you think. When it works, it can produce wonders such as Shaun of the Dead, Brain Dead and last years horror hit, Wyrmwood. But when it doesn’t work, eurgh… That’s when things can go horribly wrong. But what happens when the comedy takes over and the laughs outweigh the horror? Well you get fantastically funny, bloodsoaked comedy like Bloodsucking Bastards.

Cranking up the laughs to eleven, Bloodsucking Bastards is the Office Space of the horror genre, a...

Splatoon Review
I’ll admit, when I first heard that Nintendo was developing an online shooter game for the Wii U, I was more apprehensive than excited. It’s not from a lack of confidence in the company’s ability as a developer, but rather their track record and history with online games that worried me. Sure, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. For Wii U provide some great online modes, but these are franchises and genres that the Big N has been tinkering with for decades, and they’ve had their fare share of mishaps along the way.

Yet, after spending a couple of weeks with Splatoon, I’m pleasantly surprised to find myself in a position of, well, surprise.

Granted, I think a lot of what makes Splatoon special is the fact that Nintendo decided to not borrow from existing franchises and series, and instead develop an entirely new IP in the process.

Over the past couple of years we’ve seen a ton of TV shows and movies centered around the biblical event and most – like The Remaining – are, frankly, terrible. From the gloriously over the top Nicolas Cage film Left Behind, to the completely unfunny (and a waste of the talents involved) Rapture-Palooza, it seems the mix of religious themes and current Hollywood film making do not gel. Then again maybe it’s because, despite a belief in a higher power, I’m not the target market for films of this nature – after all, most rapture-themed films play on inherent fears found in religion.

Sunset Overdrive: More is more in colorful shooter
Sunset Overdrive is all about sensory overload. Everything is amped up to 11, and the characters, environments, weapons and plot of the game are all deliriously, gleefully over the top. The evil corporation Fizzco has rushed its latest energy drink, OverCharge Delirium Xt, to market. Unfortunately, it has an unfortunate side effect: It turns consumers into rampaging mutants. You’re working as a janitor at the beverage’s launch party when the fizz hits the fan, and it’s up to you to clean up the mess. Fortunately, your cleaning tools of choice are an assortment of increasingly ridiculous guns. Unlike...

The Top 50 underappreciated Xbox games
Microsoft's debut games console, the Xbox, made a big impact on gaming, but not all of its games got the attention they deserved...

Feature

The new generation console war may turning towads a two horse race, with Nintendo playing catch up, but wind back a few years, and Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo were all hard at it, competing for your money and loyalty. The PlayStation 2 would go on to win the war of its generation, but Microsoft's Xbox was a tough competitor, giving the company a secure foothold, which it would later take advantage of in the next generation with the Xbox 360's dominance.

The original Xbox had a host of great games, many of which have gone on to become successful franchises, with no better example than Halo, but not all of its good games gained the attention they deserved, even if sequels managed to appear in later years.

Sega Bringing Sonic The Hedgehog 2 And Three Other Titles To Mobile Platforms This Holiday And Beyond
I don’t fancy myself much of an iOS or Android gamer, but when games that could easily hold their own on other platforms start finding their way to phones, my ears perk up. Fittingly, Sega has just announced that it will be bringing four new titles to mobile platforms in the coming months, with three of them arriving in time for the holidays or sooner.

You can check out the press release below for all the details, but what will most likely jump out at people the most are the two planned Sonic the Hedgehog releases. The first is called Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, a kart racer promising land, sea, and air traversal ala Diddy Kong Racing, in addition to a host of playable characters from Sega’s substantial cast. Oh, and the karts can transform, hence Racing Transformed. Hopefully Sonic will scream “transfoooooorm!!” like the Lumas from Super...

'Under the Dome's' Mike Vogel: 'Actors are the dumbest group of individuals essentially out there'
Born in Pennsylvania to a family with two grandfathers who fought in World War II, Mike Vogel now plays Army veteran Dale "Barbie" Barbara in CBS' Monday limited series "Under the Dome," based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.

Barbie is on a mission and has plenty of secrets and angst, but Vogel is a happily married father of three daughters. He also doesn't think much of actors opining on world issues.

"I grew up a plumber's son in Philadelphia," he tells Zap2it. "No one stuck a microphone in my dad's face, saying, 'What's your view on gun control?' But why would they care what I think? On paper, actors are the dumbest group of individuals essentially out there.

"Most of us have not gone to college. However, we never stop learning. Because of what we do, we're constantly researching, constantly learning. However, my opinion...

8 More Biggest Gaming Jerks
A little while back, I published my very first What Culture article about the 7 Biggest Jerks In Gaming. The article consisted of a list of gaming characters who, for one reason or another, I considered to be massive douchebags.

A couple of months have passed now and I feel it is now time to look at some more of gaming’s biggest a**holes.

Some of the characters on this list may intentionally be jerks because they are the villain of the game that they star in. Some may be good guys who just provoke ire from deep within the gamer’s soul. Some may even be a character that we, as the player, control and are therefore a reflection of the innate inner douchbaggery that lives within us all (Spoiler: One of the entries is Totally that last one.)

There may also be some spoilers so please be wary!

Review: Jet Set Radio HD
Jet Set Radio was a game initially developed for the Sega Dreamcast by Smilebit, a studio set up by Sega to work exclusively on developing new and interesting IPs to support their fledgling fifth-gen console. Out of the line-up they produced, Jet Set Radio become far-and-away the most iconic title to land on the Dreamcast, often considered to be the platform's "mascot" title. The game struck a chord with the Japanese public on its release for its strong personality as a game and its eclectic mash-up of musical styles in its soundtrack; in the West, it become iconic for its wacky nature, stylish cel-shaded graphics and ludicrously fun gameplay. It quickly become a cult classic from the turn-of-the-millenium era of gaming, and a small but dedicated fanbase have been pressuring Sega to do something with the franchise after it was all-but-abandoned following the release of Jet Set Radio Future on...

Jet Set Radio Review
Over a decade ago, a creative and somewhat surreal game known as Jet Set Radio debuted on Sega’s Saturn. Originally referred to as Jet Grind Radio here on our North American shores, the title received a lot of buzz for its innovative cel-shaded visual style, phenomenal soundtrack and short burst appeal, eventually becoming one of the console’s most talked-about releases. As a result, it’s not surprising that the Japanese gaming giant decided to revisit its past success, choosing to give the classic a high-definition makeover, in order to position it for a re-release on both Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

For those who aren’t familiar with the series, Jet Set Radio is a quirky title that borrows elements from the action, platforming and extreme sports genres, though its main focus is not on performing visceral tricks in exchange for an assortment of in-game points.

Sega confirms Jet Set Radio for Vita
Sega of America and Sega Europe have both confirmed that this summer the Dreamcast rollerblading graffiti epic, Jet Set Radio, is heading to Vita and that it will be in playable form at this year’s E3.

The classic from 2000 is heading to Vita with updated HD visuals and will take full advantage of the systems touch capabilities which according to Haruki Satomi, Sega’s Senior Vice President of Digital Business, “are proving to be a perfect fit”. Also the Vita’s camera will be integrated into the game somehow, but specific functions remained undisclosed.

A few screens have surfaced for the Vita version and after almost 12 years this game still holds up really well in the visuals department. This game will no doubt look gorgeous on the Vita’s Oled screen and it will be interesting to see if or how they incorporate the second analog stick on the...

'American Reunion' Soundtrack Details Plus All The Songs In The Film Including Al Green, 2 Live Crew, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men & More
It may be over ten years since the class of '99 walked the hallways of their high school, but it seems for Stifler, Jim, Michelle and the rest of the gang, the playlist hasn't really changed.

With "American Reunion" headed to theaters in a couple of weeks, details on the official soundtrack (via Film Music Reporter) as well as the full list of songs in the film has dropped, and it's a bit of jump back in time. Oh sure, the party-starting tracks most people expect these days from the interchangeable likes of Cobra Starship, Lmfao and 3Oh!3 feature, but it's the '90s that are here in full force. The Verve Pipe, Semisonic, Lit, Third Eye Blind, Montell Jordan, Boyz II Men, Montell Jordan, 2 Live Crew....it's like we're fifteen all over again. Remember Bic Runga's "Sway"? No? It was a minor '90s hit that appeared on...

‘Jet Set Radio’ returns – first screenshots!
Originally released on the Dreamcast in 2000, Jet Set Radio follows the story of a gang of rollerblading graffiti artists battling an oppressive government by tagging territories in the city of Tokyo-to. In the U.S., it was originally renamed Jet Grind Radio. It was one of the first games to use the now-common technique of “cel-shading,” generating polygonal graphics that look like 2-D animation.

Sega are set to release an upgraded high-def version of Jet Set Radio on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC this summer, and as a teaser to the release Sega have unveiled three screenshots from the game:...

Slip On Your Rollerblades, 'Jet Set Radio' Is Coming To Xbla and Psn
For some of you younger readers out there, rollerblades were like wheelies for grownups. Grownups who were extreme. The Dreamcast classic Jet Set Radio (re-christened Jet Grind Radio here in the U.S.) channeled that extremity into the best skating/tagging video game in that incredibly limited gaming genre, and in spite of that dubious distinction was actually a terrific, brightly-colored game that appears to be coming back to consoles thanks to publisher Sega at some mysterious point in the future.

Sega teased the release of the E3 Critic's Choice award-winning game with a title and image-free trailer and the text "Guess Who's Coming Back," but the hip hop track playing under the teaser is pretty familiar. In spite of the sometimes hit or mess nature of some of the recent Dreamcast to HD ports (Crazy Taxi comes to mind for one), I'm hoping Sega is able to keep this title intact.

30 Great Games That Defined Dreamcast
A 1999 demo promoting the ruinously expensive Shenmue (called “What’s Shenmue?”) featured an exclusive scene in which then company president Yukawa-san could be seen slumped at his desk, head in hands, surrounded by piles of unsold consoles (above). Deep down, Sega must have known the Dreamcast didn’t stand a chance even before they axed it two years later.

Even though the Sega Dreamcast enjoyed a relatively short lifespan (officially somewhere between its 1998 Japanese launch and late 2002 termination) and wasn’t supported at all by the most powerful publisher of the day (Electronic Arts) the well-loved machine still boasts an impressive library of titles.

Even extending this “best of” list, from the originally planned 10 to a whopping 30 games, has seen me leave out such gems as cult top-down shooter Ikaruga, well-regarded sports sim NHL 2K2, online deathmatch game Outtrigger, stylish BioWare-made shooter MDK2 and Street Fighter III: Double Impact (to...

Did R. Kelly place his vote for his pick for Song of the Summer by jumping on a new remix of Britney Spears' monster smash "Till the World Ends"? Following the all-girl remix featuring Nicki Minaj and the song's writer, Ke$ha, this new version of the Femme Fatale single gets some love in the club from Kells.

On the new mix, after Brit sings the first verse and the chorus, Kelly comes in singing, "Slide up in this club/ This beat's got me in love/ Till I just don't care/ It's like I'm walking on air/ It's a party right here." He then goes on about partying till the world ends, his Auto-Tuned vocals dancing over the track until the song's breakdown,...
