JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is one of the biggest manga franchises of all time, so the modern anime adaptation has involved a wealth of talented creators. Now, the director of one season is blitzing into a new story with an anime-original isekai series.

Despite the title, which may suggest otherwise, Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth is a brand-new anime that's not based on a preceding manga or series. Combining fast-paced action with a delinquent anime, it's just the kind of thing that the director of JoJo's Bizarre Adventurewould work on. The Dog Stars: Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and Guy Pearce join the cast of Ridley Scott’s pandemic thriller
Image
Ridley Scott’s pandemic thriller, The Dog Stars, adds some significant star power today with Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and Guy Pearce joining Jacob Elordi for an epic that finds a civilian pilot living a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a hard-as-nails ex-marine. When a band of scavengers called The Reapers invades their space, Hig and his compatriots must prepare for battle.

The Dog Stars hails from 20th Century Studios and is based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller (Burn, The River, The Painter, The Last Ranger). Initially, Scott was reteaming with Gladiator II star Paul Mescal for The Dog Stars, but scheduling conflicts with his part in Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology kept him from participating. Sources say Mescal plays Paul McCartney in Mendes’ upcoming film, making him essential to the project.

Here’s a synopsis of Heller’s novel:

“Hig’s wife is gone,...

‘Deaf President Now!’ Review: Davis Guggenheim and Nyle Dimarco’s Doc Gives the Deaf Rights Movement a Compelling Spotlight
Image
A couple of weeks back, apropos of nothing, a small cadre in the cesspool formerly known as Twitter decided that the most important cultural irritant of the moment was the rise of visible Asl interpreters at press conferences and public events.

It was a brief moment of directionless outrage that offered a reminder of how eager some people are to marginalize even small traces of accommodation and to erase even incremental traces of progress.

Look no further than Nyle Dimarco and Davis Guggenheim’s new Apple documentary Deaf President Now! for an efficient and inspiring primer on how hard-won and important that progress truly was and still is.

A fine entry in the generally prolific “Birth of a Movement” documentary genre, Deaf President Now! illustrates what is and was distinctive about the Deaf rights movement, but also the elements that connect it to many recent campaigns for visibility and recognition.

Babygirl
Image
Nicole Kidman has never been a risk-averse actor. For every commercial notch in her body of work, be it Bewitched or Moulin Rouge!, there’s a Birth or Dogville: films that mine the darker depths of humanity, often to the extreme. Babygirl may not linger in those shadowy corners for quite as long, but is nonetheless a reminder of Kidman’s gutsy choices and no-holds-barred approach to performing.

In this film, directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Halina Reijn (who made 2022’s excellent Gen-z murder-mystery Bodies Bodies Bodies), Kidman plays high-powered tech- executive Romy, who we immediately meet in the final throes of leg-buckling sex with Jacob (Antonio Banderas), her husband of nearly 20 years. Moments later, she steals away to another part of their family home and secretly climaxes to the flickering glow of submissive porn on her laptop.

Dickinson is impeccable; as Samuel he brings an elusive yet calming presence with a slow half-smile.

Nicole Kidman Names "Overlooked" Horror Movie With 84% Rt Score As The Role She'd Most Like To Revisit
Image
Nicole Kidman names an "overlooked" horror movie with an 84% Rotten Tomatoes score as the role she would like to revisit the most. The Australian actress is known for her contributions to both film and television across various genres. Kidman's achievements include an Academy Award for The Hours in 2002, two Primetime Emmy Awards for Big Little Lies in 2017, and a whopping six Golden Globe wins for Moulin Rogue! in 2001, Being the Ricardos in 2021, and more.

Known for movies across many genres, Kidman has naturally starred in a few horror films throughout her career. A few of these examples are independent films that often explore dark and tragic themes, such as Lars Van Trier's avant-garde thriller Dogville, Jonathan Glazer's psychological drama Birth, Yorgos Lanthimos' The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and Sofia Coppola's gothic thriller The Beguiled. However, one of Kidman's best horror movies has been "overlooked," according to the actress.

Review: "Nosferatu" is the perfect present for the cinephile in your life
Image
by Cláudio Alves

A belated Merry Christmas to you all, and Happy Holidays too. What better way to celebrate than with cinema? After all, the year of 2024 is coming to a close with an array of new releases, as varied as they are curious. For Kidmaniacs, Babygirl is upon us, with the actress's best performance since Birth. The Fire Inside is a crowd-pleasing sports drama of unusual elegance, while A Complete Unknown is essential viewing for those who want to keep up to date with the awards season. Better Man brings some monkey business to the festive box office, while Vermiglio delivers a post-war poem on the changing seasons.

However, if you're like me, a horror hound at heart, the week's most enticing release must surely be Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, an old-fashioned Gothic romance with a nasty streak a mile wide…...

The Secret to Harris Dickinson’s Seductive ‘Babygirl’ Performance? Pretending He Didn’t Know Anything About Co-Star Nicole Kidman
Image
When Harris Dickinson first appears in Halina Reijn’s sexy, slippery “Babygirl,” he’s got a dog treat in his hand and a nervous twinkle in his eye. As he charms an angry pup, a terrified and slightly thrilled Nicole Kidman watches just down the street, now safe from the snapping maw of the previously out-of-control canine. The implication is clear: here is someone who can soothe even the wildest of creatures. Perhaps that can extend to Kidman’s Romy?

She — and the audience — find out the answer soon enough. In Reijn’s erotic thriller, Romy’s tightly controlled existence as both a high-powered CEO and a loving wife and mother is thrown into complete disarray by the arrival of alluring intern Samuel (Dickinson). As the pair embark on a kinky, sex-positive Bdsm relationship, both of them open themselves to just about everything: pleasure, pain, ruin, George Michael dance parties,...

Golden Globes: Nicole Kidman could become the second-most nominated actress with 21

Nicole Kidman could make Golden Globes history come nominations morning, Dec. 9. If she gets in for both the A24 film “Babygirl” and the Netflix miniseries “The Perfect Couple,” that would put her at 21 career citations and set the record for having the second-most noms for an actor. As it stands, Kidman is sitting on an impressive 19 total Golden Globe nominations, a number shared with Shirley MacLaine and Al Pacino. Below are all of the projects and categories Kidman has been recognized for at the Golden Globes. The six in gold are her wins.

‘Babygirl’ Director Halina Reijn: Watching Nicole Kidman Act Is Like Witnessing an ‘Exorcism’
Image
Nicole Kidman transcended the physical realm for her critically acclaimed turn in “Babygirl,” according to writer/director Halina Reijn.

Kidman, who also produces the feature, stars as a CEO who begins a psychosexual relationship with an intern (Harris Dickinson). Reijn told GQ UK that Kidman’s performance changed her mind, body, and soul.

“Seeing her act for me is like an exorcism,” Reijn said. “She goes beyond ego, beyond sanity and beyond fear… It’s not that she’s not afraid, you know, she’s super afraid, but she still goes there.”

Kidman added that she didn’t want to hold anything back when literally baring herself naked onscreen.

“I’m in the whole film [in ‘Babygirl’],” Kidman said. “There are so many close-ups. It’s a full stripping of me.”

She continued, “You can absolutely tell when people are phoning something in. For me, that doesn’t work. I’m not moved by that.

Nicole Kidman at an event for Paperboy (2012)
Birth at 20: Jonathan Glazer’s magnificent, misunderstood masterpiece
Nicole Kidman at an event for Paperboy (2012)
The director’s fantastical drama, starring a never-better Nicole Kidman, was booed and criticised in 2004 but its fans have grown over time

It’s the score that hooks you first in Birth: that light, sprightly, slightly anxious jitter of woodwind that trills over the film’s opening shot, as the camera tracks a man’s morning run through a snow-carpeted Central Park. For a while, the music follows the pace of his movement, lending this ordinary activity an otherworldly lilt – the whitened trees and paths of New York’s great green lung taking on the air of Grimm Brothers woodland.

But heavier orchestral intrusions threaten this rhythmic coordination between sound and image. Battering brass and percussion take over as the runner stalls, collapses and dies under Greyshot Arch; as we discordantly cut to shimmery footage of a water birth, the flute section picks up where it left off. Just...

Nicole Kidman Nearly Starred In One Of David Fincher's Most Underrated Movies
Image
Australian actress Nicole Kidman began her professional career in 1983 with an appearance in the holiday film "Bush Christmas," and followed it immediately with Brian Trenchard-Smith's very watchable teens-rule actioner "BMX Bandits." She was 16 at the time. Kidman was a striking screen presence, however, and she immediately began a busy career that hasn't slowed since. For six years, Kidman was all over Aussie TV and cinema, with the actress finally breaking into Hollywood in 1989 with her role in the taut thriller "Dead Calm." In 1990, she was cast opposite Tom Cruise in Tony Scott's "Days of Thunder," and her superstar status was cemented. She also began dating Cruise that year, and they married in 1990, staying one of Hollywood's most visible power couples for a decade.

Kidman was drawn to a great variety of projects, appearing in costume dramas, comedies, FX-based blockbusters, Oscar bait nonsense, and bonkers experiments like "Dogville," "Fur,...

‘Birth’ Was So Much More Than Its Notorious Bathtub Scene [Horror Queers Podcast]
Tim Burton
The Bath Tub Scene

We spent the first half of September with discussions of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (listen) and Colm McCarthy’s The Girl With All the Gifts (listen) before celebrating our 300th episode (and the start of a six-week theme on Divas/Anniversaries) with a revisit of Karyn Kusama’s Jennifer’s Body (listen). Next up: Nicole Kidman in Jonathan Glazer‘s unfairly controversial 2004 sophomore feature, Birth.

Kidman stars as Anna, a widow who is still grieving her husband’s sudden death ten years later. Despite being newly engaged to Joseph (Danny Huston), Anna upends her entire life when 10-year-old Sean (Cameron Bright) appears in her apartment, claiming to be her dead husband.

As her concerned family, including matriarch Eleanor (Lauren Bacall) and brother-in-law Bob (Arliss Howard) question the boy, new details about Anna’s marriage emerge courtesy of dead Sean’s brother Clifford (Peter Stormare) and his wife,...

Celebrating 300 Episodes With the Misunderstood ‘Jennifer’s Body’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Tim Burton
“Needs moar bewbs.”

After kicking September off with discussions of Tim Burton’s classic Beetlejuice (listen) and the modern zombie film The Girl With All the Gifts (listen), we’ve finally reached our 300th episode! To celebrate this milestone, we’re doing a 6-week theme month of Diva/Anniversary worship (running all the way through Halloween), and we’re starting by revisiting a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes so that we can give it the proper, modern HQ treatment: Karyn Kusama‘s Jennifer’s Body (2009)!

In Jennifer’s Body, When popular girl Jennifer (Megan Fox) is possessed by a demon after a botched ritual, she turns a hungry eye on guys who never stood a chance with her before. While Jennifer satisfies her appetite for human flesh with the school’s male population, her best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) learns what’s happening and vows to put an end to the carnage.

Lauren Bacall movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Hollywood icon Lauren Bacall made her feature debut with Howard Hawks‘ adventure yarn “To Have and Have Not” (1945). The film was a landmark for the actress in both her career and her life, since it was how she met her future husband Humphrey Bogart. The two would become a legendary couple off-screen and on, making three subsequent features together: “The Big Sleep” (1946), “Dark Passage” (1947) and “Key Largo” (1948).

Despite her hefty filmography, Bacall received just one Oscar nomination in her career: Best Supporting Actress for “The Mirror Has Two Faces” (1996), in which she played Barbra Streisand‘s domineering mother. After victories at the Golden Globes and SAG, Bacall looked like a shoo-in to finally clinch an Academy Award, yet lost to Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”).

Bacall also had a successful stage career, winning two Tonys as Best Actress in a Musical (“Applause” in 1970 and “Woman of the Year” in 1981″). Her...

Nicole Kidman’s Sexy, Sweaty ‘Babygirl’ Makes Venice Climax to 6.5-Minute Standing Ovation
Image
Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson brought sexy back to Venice Friday night at the premiere of Halina Reijn’s kinky, sex-filled “Babygirl.”

In the A24 movie, Kidman plays a high-powered CEO who starts a secret affair with her new intern (Dickinson).

While not a conventional art house movie, “Babygirl” stimulated the Venice audience. As the end credits rolled on the film at the Sala Grande Theatre, the crowd erupted into a 6.5-minute standing ovation.

As the audience cheered, Kidman hugged Reijn and beamed and blushed at all the attention.

It was a sweaty night in Italy — in more ways than one. “It’s so hot,” Kidman said as she waved to fans before entering the theater earlier, on a day when temperatures crept up to 90 degrees. But “Babygirl” seemed to crank up the heat even more as the movie got underway. Kidman’s character Romy pushes the envelope in a...

‘Babygirl’ Review: Nicole Kidman Goes Dom-Com for Safe, Commercial Kink
Image
Like a sheep in wolf’s clothing, Halina Reijn’s surprisingly genteel “Babygirl” might bare the occasional fang, but it doesn’t have much bite. For all the superficial similarities to “50 Shades of Grey” — here too setting a lightly sadomasochistic relationship within a world of affluence, all while tacking on a much dreaded age-gap imbalance to send social media’s most ardent moralists into a tizzy — this dom-com plays more like an outré spin on “Working Girl,” updating Reagan-era wishcasting for the social set that has decided Kamala Is Brat.

Premiering at this year’s Venice Film Festival and set for release this December, “Babygirl” could easily emerge as a holiday season guilty pleasure, a sexy-but-never-dangerous star romp that streamlines kink for maximum commercial play. Teasing out fantasies of power exchange in the safest possible space, audiences can have their cake and eat it too — even if the...

Nicole Kidman’s 30 Best Film and TV Performances, Ranked
Image
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in April 2024. It has since been updated with new performances from Kidman.]

Nicole Kidman is the rare actress in the 21st century who, like the stars of Hollywood’s golden years, doesn’t disappear into roles so much as elevate films by her mere presence.

She’s certainly swung big at mainstream blockbusters (think: the “Aquaman” films) that might feel out of her step with her character-driven work elsewhere (like most of the films on the list that follows). But that’s because the Australian icon is unafraid of any role, whether stripping down her post-Oscar, A-lister veneer to film Lars von Trier’s Brechtian “Dogville” in Sweden, slipping into a bathtub with the 10-year-old possible reincarnation of her dead husband in Jonathan Glazer’s “Birth,” or, yes, donning a fake nose to play a suicidal Virginia Woolf for her Oscar-winning turn in “The Hours.”

On April 27 in Los Angeles, Nicole Kidman received the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award, joining the ranks of Jane Fonda,...

After dancing down the red carpet, the director and her cast saw the film receive an eight-minute standing ovation; worldwide critical acclaim and 5-star reviews followed.

“Neither C.C. nor Zero were created then”: Code Geass’ Original Protagonist Would Have Done More Justice as Zero than Lelouch’s Initial Goals Could
Image
Ichirō Ōkouchi’s Code Geass is one of the most renowned anime series that has taken the world by storm. The series made the viewers ardent followers of the show, as it featured strategic brilliance along with complex motivation that will keep the audience at the edge of their seats, making them anticipate the next move of the characters.

Naturally, the series was praised for having a well-planned and intricate plot that added to the dynamics of the characters and its thought-provoking themes. At the same time, Zero and C.C. had gained immense praise as the main characters of the show.

However, to the fans’ surprise, Ōkouchi-San had not planned either of the two to be the protagonists of the show. The plans for the anime were different, as Kallen Kōzuki was initially meant to be the Og protagonist, mainly for being one of...

“It’s important not to have sycophants around you”: Nicole Kidman Couldn’t Help But Admire Her Movie With Tom Cruise Where They Fell in Love With Each Other
Image
After their romance sparked on the set of Days of Thunder and culminated in a Christmas Eve wedding a year later, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise gave Hollywood another sensational couple. Despite their subsequent separation, their relationship has continued to be a topic of discussion, due to its high-profile nature and eventual breakdown.

Their on-screen collaborations, notably in the 1999 erotic thriller, Eyes Wide Shut, further cemented their legacy together in film. And Kidman recently reflected on starring in the film as she revealed how her daughter’s feedback has given her a newfound appreciation for her own work.

Nicole Kidman’s Renewed Appreciation For Her Work

Nicole Kidman has been one of the actresses who find it uncomfortable to celebrate her own performances. However, the actress made one exception after she received the feedback from her daughter, Sunday Rose.

Nicole Kidman Honored with Career Retrospective at Nashville’s Belcourt Theatre
Image
In honor of her receiving this year’s AFI Life Achievement Award, Nicole Kidman is being celebrated with a career retrospective at Nashville’s non-profit film center, The Belcourt, starting next week. Having undergone extensive renovations and preservations in 2016, The Belcourt is now one of Nashville’s most beloved homes for the arts, attracting audiences from all over Tennessee and the Southeast region, as well as visitors from across the country and globe. The theater programs over 300 films a year across 4,500 screenings, some of which feature Q&As with filmmakers and scholars.

Born in Hawaii, but raised in Australia, Kidman made her feature acting debut at the age of 16 and has been working steadily ever since. During her speech at the AFI ceremony, Kidman said, “It is a privilege to make films. And glorious to have made films and television with these storytellers who allowed me to run wild and...

The Partnership: How Nicole Kidman Convinced A Hesitant Lulu Wang To Take The Helm In Prime Video’s ‘Expats’
Image
Lulu Wang remembers Nicole Kidman spiraling down a psychological rabbit hole in Jonathan Glazer’s 2004 dream-like masterpiece Birth where a woman believes that a 10-year-old boy is the reincarnation of her dead husband. “That’s my favorite,” Wang declares, much to Kidman’s delight — and surprise. During the making of Prime Video’s Expats drama series, based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s second novel, The Expatriates published in early 2016, they both discovered that they had the same ‘get up and do it’ sensibility. As Kidman put it: “You’ve got to roll up your sleeves and do it.” Followed by a cry of “Don’t just sit there, let’s do it, let’s do it.” Wang says it’s “super rare” to meet someone like Kidman. “It feels pretty rare because there are a lot of people who talk about meeting more female directors. But I think that the evidence is in the resume.

‘Fantasmas’ Trailer: Julio Torres Is on a Surreal Odyssey to Find a Lost Pearl Earring
Image
Julio Torres is stepping into a very literal and gender-swapped “Girl With a Pearl Earring” rendition for HBO.

The “Los Espookys” creator is back at the network with new surreal series “Fantasmas,” which he created, directed, and stars in. The series debuted at the Atx TV Festival earlier this year.

Torres plays a fictionalized version of himself as he tries to uncover a lost gold oyster earring. In his search to find the precious object, Torres’ character Julio reflects on the offbeat folks he encounters in introspective, eerie, and comedic vignettes set in a dreamy, alternate version of New York City. The surreal series is billed as a “fantastical six-part tale” that is a “kaleidoscope of color” to “weave together stories of people looking for meaning, purpose, and connection in an increasingly isolating world.”

In addition to Torres, the cast includes Martine Gutierrez, Tomas Matos, and Joe Rumrill as the voice of Bibo.

Henry Cavill's Latest Movie Sets PVOD Release Date After Disappointing Run in Theaters
Image
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is getting another shot at finding an audience. Lionsgate has revealed that the Henry Cavill-led action movie is heading to Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through this Friday.

Although The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has been in theaters for less than a month, the movie has drastically underperformed at the box office. At the time of writing, Ungentlemanly Warfare has only grossed $19.3 million worldwide off a budget of $60 million, meaning that the movie is destined to be a financial failure, at least during its theatrical run. This is likely why Lionsgate is releasing The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on PVOD on Friday, May 10, hoping that those who don't frequent the theater will buy or rent the movie at home. Digital platforms that Ungentlemanly Warfare will be available on include, but are not limited to, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu.

How To Watch The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare At Home
Image
Ever wonder what it'd look like if a World War II drama was filtered through director Guy Ritchie's sensibilities? There isn't a single piece of generative AI tech out there that could possibly have come up with the result of "Casablanca" by way of "Inglourious Basterds," with a scene-stealing performance from Alan Ritchson, to boot. "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" perhaps wasn't the most Guy Ritchie film we've ever received, but it certainly was an entertaining enough way to spend an afternoon at the movies as the ensemble cast of stars pummeled Nazis for a solid two hours. Based on true historical events as depicted in the book "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: How Churchill's Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops," the action-comedy took a much more irreverent tone to the overall story of the first black ops mission in modern warfare.

Julio Torres: Ryan Gosling Is a ‘World Builder’ of an Actor Who Co-Created ‘SNL’ Skit ‘Papyrus 2’
Image
Julio Torres is crediting Ryan Gosling for being a “world-builder” of a comedic actor.

The “Problemista” writer/director/star told Entertainment Weekly that Gosling had more than a few sketch ideas when he returned to host “SNL.” Torres previously worked as a “Saturday Night Live” writer, and also returned with a skit per Gosling’s request to follow-up their viral “Papyrus” sequence parodying the font used in James Cameron’s “Avatar.” And much like the “Avatar” franchise itself, Gosling had a vision for making multiple installments of the “Papyrus” sketch.

“With no Ryan Gosling, there’s no ‘Papyrus 1,’ and there’s no ‘Papyrus 2,’” Torres said. “The first one was this sort of throwaway joke I made that he really latched on to. He was like, ‘Oh, I think maybe there’s an idea there,’ and I was like, ‘I really don’t think so.’ I didn’t tell him that,...

10 Supernatural Moments That Made Viewers Quit The Show
Image
The Leviathan arc in Season 7 failed to impress audiences, as the monsters proved to be more of an inconvenience than a real threat. Sam's forced marriage to Becky in Season 7 was played for laughs but left fans feeling uncomfortable and insulted by the show. Bobby Singer's death in Season 7, followed by his return as a ghost, undermined the emotional impact and disappointed viewers.

Warning: This article contains mentions of extreme violence.

The hit drama Supernatural had many fantastic storylines and interesting characters, but some moments made viewers give up on the show altogether. Supernatural ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020, and after season 11 aired, the show earned the title of the longest-running American live-action fantasy TV series ever. Supernatural followed the lives of Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) Winchester, two demon hunters who were later joined by angel Castiel (Misha Collins). In 2020, the Supernatural finale aired and brought...

“Oh f—k, there’s Nicole Kidman”: Jonathan Glazer’s Best Efforts to Make ‘Expats’ Star ‘De-Sexualized’ Failed in His Controversial Movie That Still Polarizes Fans
Image
Released in 2004, Jonathan Glazer’s second feature Birth refused to spoon-feed answers to the audience, which might’ve unfortunately added to its box-office failure at the time. However, decades later, the highly polarizing film, which saw Nicole Kidman delivering her best performance since Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, continues to resonate with fans.

While the visionary director was initially conflicted about starring Kidman, following her celebrity stature, it didn’t take long for the filmmaker to be convinced she was ready for the role. Reflecting on her character, Glazer revealed that they initially talked about de-s-xualizing Kidman’s image, but at the end of the day, he couldn’t differentiate her from herself.

Goku's Next Rival in Dragon Ball Super Needs to Be Anyone But Vegeta
Image
Goku and Vegeta arguably have the greatest rivalry in anime history. From Dragon Ball Z to Super, the two have been locked in a constant back-and-forth to see who comes out on top, with Goku usually ending up the stronger of the two. Now that Vegeta has begun to focus more on his own personal development and has become more like a training partner to Goku than an outright rival, it may be time for Goku to move on and find a new rival in the near future.

Goku has a way of bringing out the best in others, making him the ideal person to be anyone's source of friendly competition. There are plenty of new, interesting villains in Dragon Ball Super just waiting to have a redemption arc like Vegeta did, and they all have far greater power than either Goku or Vegeta did in Dragon Ball Z.

Jonathan Glazer Hit by 500 Jewish Signatories of Letter Against Oscar Speech
Image
Filmmaker Jonathan Glazer's speech at the Oscars sparked controversy, and now more than 500 Jewish filmmakers, artists, and producers in Hollywood have written a letter denouncing him. Famous signatories, including Eli Roth and Jennifer Jason Leigh, denounce Glazer for equating Nazism with Israeli actions. Glazer's film, The Zone of Interest, won the Oscars for Best International Film and Best Sound and is considered a masterpiece. His speech called for peace and criticized the dehumanization of any group.

It's been eight days since MovieWeb was at the 96th Academy Awards, and there are still thunderous rumbles in Hollywood over the Best International Film acceptance speech given by Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest. While the speech (which was misleadingly misquoted by Variety and other outlets) may seem harmless to many people, decrying any act of dehumanization and murder, be they committed by Nazi or Hamas, Israeli or Houthi, American or Iranian.

Film Review: Birth (2022) by Yoo Ji-young
Image
Receiving accolades such as the Citizen Critics' Award at the 27th Busan International Film Festival and the Festival Choice at the 48th Seoul Independent Film Festival, “Birth” goes somewhat unnoticed, but proves to be truly impactful. Delving into themes of personal choice, societal expectations, and the inherent struggle for autonomy, it emerges as a poignant reflection on the complexities of contemporary womanhood.

Birth is screening at Helsinki Cine Aasia

Jae (Han Hae-in), a promising young writer, is about to publish her new book. Geon-woo (Lee Ju-han), her roommate and lover, works as an English teacher at a private institute. Content with their lives and determined to avoid traditional commitments, their world is shattered by the unexpected news of Jae's unplanned pregnancy. While Geon-woo, on the verge of a promotion, sees this as an opportunity to fulfill his desire for a family, Jae struggles with the fear of how motherhood might affect her career aspirations.

The Actual Best Movie Sound Of 2024 Won The Oscar (Not The Loudest)
Image
It isn't always true that a cacophonous work of cinema takes home the Academy Award for Best Sound (or what used to be "Oscars" before Design and Mixing were combined into one category), but I can't think of the last time a genuinely quiet movie won this award.

Then again, Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest" might've been, in terms of subject matter, the loudest movie of 2023. It shouldn't have been. 80 years after Allied forces began liberating Axis-operated concentration camps at the end of World War II, we should be crystal clear on the topic of genocide. We should've been clear on it then. But rather than learn from history, we remain determined to repeat its most despicable mistakes.

And as "The Zone of Interest" makes abundantly clear throughout its harrowingly placid 104-minute runtime, these really aren't mistakes. The monsters who executed the Third Reich's Final Solution were...

Jonathan Glazer Condemns ‘Holocaust Being Hijacked by an Occupation’ in Oscar Speech
Image
“The Zone of Interest” writer/director Jonathan Glazer addressed the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict head-on during the 2024 Oscars.

“Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It’s shaped all of our past and present,” Glazer said in his acceptance speech for Best International Feature. “Right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.”

Glazer was joined on stage by fellow producer on the film James Wilson and its financial backer Leonard Blavatnik.

Glazer continued, “Whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza — all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?”

The World War II period piece is set against the backdrop of Auschwitz as a German Nazi commandant (Christian Friedel) and his emotionless wife (Sandra Hüller) condone the mass-murders of Jews.

‘The Zone of Interest’ Wins Best International Feature Oscar
Image
Long-working British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer celebrated his first Academy Award win at the 96th Oscars, taking home the Best International Feature Film prize for “The Zone of Interest.”

The Holocaust drama, starring Christian Friedel and “Anatomy of a Fall” Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller as the German Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss and his sociopathic wife Hedwig, has been steadily wending its way through the awards season since earning the Grand Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Glazer loosely adapts a Martin Amis novel for this searing story about the Höss’ indifference to the Auschwitz horrors happening on the other side of their bucolic garden; the family lives with their three children in an emotionless bubble while Jews are exterminated en masse.

“Zone of Interest” never shows those horrors on screen, instead relying on Johnnie Burn’s Oscar-nominated sound design to convey the horrifying reality as screams and shots and roiling furnaces...

Independent Spirit Awards: American Fiction and Past Lives dominate
Image
Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.

Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...
