After Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg unleashed "Shaun of the Dead" onto the world, horror comedies were never the same. Kicking off Wright's Cornetto Trilogy starring Pegg and Nick Frost, the film skyrocketed all involved to international acclaim. Every horror comedy of the last two decades is desperately trying to capture the magic of "Shaun of the Dead," as evidenced by how many films try to drum up interest with pull quotes reading "the funniest horror comedy since 'Shaun of the Dead'" or something to that effect. And it's for a good reason -- "Shaun of the Dead" straight-up riiiiiiips. The zombies look creepy, the film's understanding of the genre is unparalleled, and for the most part -- the comedy still holds up after all these years.
"For the most part" is the operative phrase here.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pegg discussed one...

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Regina Hall is one of three women hosting the 2022 Oscars (along with Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer), a high point for the hard-working actress after 20+ years in the industry. Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see the Top 10 Regina Hall movies ranked worst to best.
In the years that followed, Hall delivered standout supporting performances in a wide swath of comedies, including “Malibu’s Most Wanted,” “King’s Ransom” and “The Honeymooners,” on top of the subsequent “Scary Movie” films. There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.
Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. Between the World and Me, based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, arrives on Nov. 21 and Melissa McCarthy comedy Superintelligence arrives on Nov. 26. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

Anthony Anderson’s Hollywood career has been consistently characterized by successful pivots, from scene-stealing comedic roles to searing dramatic turns to effervescent hosting duties and many disparate points in between. But even he couldn’t have predicted his latest foray into the unforeseen, as the first person to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the midst of a global pandemic.
“I was looking forward to the pomp and circumstance that surrounds anyone getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, because not just anyone can or will get that,” Anderson says.
The multi-hypenate hoped to celebrate with his family and closest friends in the typical high-profile public ceremony that usually accompanies the honor. But “unfortunately that type of event can’t happen because of what’s happening in the world right now.”
Rest assured, though, eventually he’ll bask directly in the glow of his personal landmark on Hollywood Boulevard.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Director Patrick Lussier and writer Todd Farmer have re-teamed for Trick, which stars Omar Epps in the main role of Detective Mike Denver, a man obsessed with a serial killer that has remained one step ahead of him for years.
An elusive serial killer, “Trick,” returns each Halloween to kill innocent victims. Detective Mike Denver (Omar Epps) faced Trick once before, shooting him off a five-storey building. When Trick’s body disappears into the town river, everyone thinks he’s dead. Only Denver believes he’s still alive. But now, as strange occurrences disrupt the peace of the town, nobody can deny that Trick has returned. Obsessed with catching the murderer, Denver will do whatever it takes to stop Trick claiming their next victim.
Trick also stars Ellen Adair as Sheriff Lisa Jayne, the sheriff in the small town of Benton who has always considered Detective Denver as her mentor.

The tensions are rising along with the body count on MTV's Scream TV series, and last week at Comic-Con, Daily Dead took part in roundtable interviews with the show's cast, who discussed mixing creepy moments with comedy, the original Scream films, and much more.
Amadeus Serafini on his suspicious, new-in-town character, Kieran Wilcox:
"He's the brooding type. He is the new kid in town. He just lost his folks a few weeks back and that's the introduction to Lakewood, and he very much makes a move on Willa [Fitzgerald's] character Emma, and has a clash where it becomes a love triangle between Connor [Weil's] character, Will, Emma, and himself. That's pretty much all I can reveal for the time being and you're going to see how it unfolds over the course of this series."

Martin Lawrence is back, baby! It's been a few years, but we finally are getting the closure we needed from the Big Momma's House franchise. This time around we find out that FBI agent Malcolm Turner has a stepson named Trent, who is forced to go undercover with him for a sting operation. They dress up in drag in order to track down a murderer at an all-girls school and obviously hilarity ensues. Man, I really gotta get into comedy writing. In the creative collaboration of a lifetime, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son pairs Martin Lawrence up with Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder, Lottery Ticket), and reteams him with director John Whitesell (Big Momma's House 2, Malibu's Most Wanted). Now, on a serious note, I know everyone's going to whine about how movies like this make them lose faith in humanity and all of that, but you have to...

Benny Gammerman here, watching all the bad sh*t so you don't have to. What's on the slab tonight? That'll be the Doa Nick Swardson's Pretend Time, "fresh" off its Comedy Central premiere. Previously, I was under the impression that I quite liked Mr. Swardson. He left an indelible impression on me at an early age with his "Gay Robot" sketch on the Adam Sandler album "Shh...Don't Tell." He's pretty dang funny as Terry Bernardino on Reno 911!. And then there are his numerous screenwriting credits: Malibu's Most Wanted, Grandma's Boy, and The Benchwarmers... while outright winners they ain't, dude at least has some willing high-profile collaborators.

Sometimes a movie franchise has earned a third film, and even if they squander the opportunity-- Spider-Man 3, X-Men 3, and, uh, most threequels out there-- you can't resent the fact that the movies exist. But some movies should never, ever have had a sequel, and when the idea comes up to make a third film four years after the sequel, you can only feel the quiet despair taking over your body. In this case I'm talking about Big Momma's House 3, which Production Weekly reports is in fact happening, and will be directed by Big Momma's House 2 director John Whitesell. Whitesell's never made a single movie I've been interested in, whether it's that earlier Martin Lawrence sequel or the Jamie Kennedy classic Malibu's Most Wanted. So I guess it would be Ok to just let him carry on and cash his paycheck, if the whole idea of this franchise continuing...

We're experiencing such a phenomenon now with Robert Pattinson, who has essentially starred in one wide-release movie and had "Twilight" transform him from "Who's that?" to "Hottest Man Alive" overnight.
But where does RPattz go from here? Will he launch a decades-long career? Work with directors like Spielberg and Scorsese? Or will he become another Hollywood cautionary tale? Below are a handful of beefcake breakouts transformed by one major role, whose careers could perhaps give guidance to the Sparkly One.

Congratulations are not in order - at least not yet - for Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jamie Kennedy. Despite a report published Tuesday that Kennedy had proposed to his girlfriend onstage at the Laugh Factory in Long Beach, Calif., over the weekend, reps for both stars say it's not the case. "There's no truth to the report," says Hewitt's rep. Kennedy's rep echoes: "There's no truth to this report whatsoever."But that doesn't mean that the lovebirds, who both star on Ghost Whisperer, haven't discussed marriage. Last month, the pair talked about engagement rumors on 104.7 FM's Johnjay and Rich Show in Arizona.

When Ghost Whisperer star Jamie Kennedy performed his standup act over the weekend at Comix comedy club in New York City, he got some over-the-top help from girlfriend and co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt. She posed for pictures with fans - and worked the merchandise table selling Kennedy's T-shirts and DVDs. People caught up with Kennedy after his set, and it's clear the comedian is completely smitten. "I'm really lucky because I get to play all over the United States and my girlfriend comes," he says. "She's so amazing, just the most supportive person I've ever been with." In March, Kennedy confirmed the pair were dating.

Jamie Kennedy is ramping up his producing efforts, signing on for the indie drama "In Northwood."
Nick Stahl will star in the film, a redemption tale centering on a man condemned to a mental hospital for committing murder. Kennedy described the project as taking place "at a moment when you're at a crossroads and have to choose what decisions you would make to survive."
First-time director D.W. Brown, a playwright who was Kennedy's acting teacher, will direct from his own script. The indie-financed project begins production this month.
Kennedy will produce via his Jizzy Entertainment banner. Mike Wittlin and Sandy Solowitz also are producing, with Mike Rachmil executive producing. Olivia Wilde, Dash Mihok and Shohreh Aghdashloo will co-star.
The move is part of Kennedy's bid to ramp up his feature production efforts. He wrote and starred in but didn't produce 2003's "Malibu's Most Wanted," created the Fran Drescher sitcom "Living With Fran" and created and starred on WB Network's "The Jamie Kennedy Experiment."
"I'd like to be someone who produces different things, whether it's funny or scary or dramatic," Kennedy said. "I want to show people I can produce movies without necessarily putting my face in them."...

Kennedy to do reality/written series for MTV
MTV has greenlighted a hybrid scripted/reality series starring Jamie Kennedy. Jamie Kennedy's Blowin' Up is something like a combination of the actor's two best known works: the Warner Bros. theatrical film Malibu's Most Wanted, in which he played a wannabe rapper, and the WB series JKX: The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, in which he played pranks. In Blowin' Up, Kennedy and his best friend, Stu Stone, try to become legitimate hip-hop stars by crashing meetings with music moguls and artists in hopes of landing a record deal. The duo will produce real original music to back the effort.

Son of the Mask
Going where Jim Carrey and his rubber face profitably went before him, Jamie Kennedy tries The Mask on for size only to find out that's it's a painfully ill-fitting proposition.
Loud, mean-spirited and generally obnoxious, Son of the Mask makes the boisterous 1994 original look downright demure and refined.
Director Lawrence Guterman, of Cats and Dogs fame, and his crack visual effects team are so busy showing off how far digital technology has advanced in the past decade that no one ever bothers to stop for a second to check if there are any workable characters or a story that makes any sense.
The result is a garish mess of a movie that spins wildly out of control early on and never looks back.
Squarely aimed at kids (presumably those with ADD), the New Line release may initially draw Kennedy's WB Network and Malibu's Most Wanted fan base, but its overall boxoffice will unlikely come anywhere close to the $120 million nabbed by the original.
Where the first Mask transformed Carrey's timid bank clerk, the new edition centers on Kennedy's Tim Avery, an aspiring cartoonist whose name references Tex Avery, the famed animator whose classic, energetic work inspired the first Mask film and has been cannibalized here.
A reluctant new dad, Tim has no idea what he's in for. Not only was his son conceived while Tim was in full Mask mode -- meaning it's only a matter of time before the baby exhibits some very unusual behavior -- but also the cursed item is being sought by the relentless Loki (Alan Cumming), the mischievous son of Norse god Odin (Bob Hoskins).
To further amp up the ensuing chaos, the pooch also gets its snout into the mask, turning Tim's household in a whirling dervish of computer-generated mayhem.
Failing to recapture the style and manic but focused energy of the original, Guterman's direction and Lance Khazei's script instead flail around in a dozen directions at once, with grating results.
Not quite blessed with the facial elasticity of his predecessor, Kennedy makes do with his best mugging until the special effects take over, and Cumming, Hoskins and the rest of the cast essentially follow his lead.
And those effects, supervised by James E. Price, are pretty spectacular, if a little disturbing. The centerpiece -- a fully digitized, photorealistic havoc-wreaking baby -- could conceivably induce terrifying nightmares weeks after initial exposure.

NL, Karz ink 1st-look deal
Looking to further its foray into the family comedy genre, New Line Cinema has signed a first-look deal with Malibu's Most Wanted producer Mike Karz and his Karz Entertainment production banner. Karz, who already has a pair of projects in development at the studio, including an untitled Jennifer Aniston project and the dating comedy Good Luck Chuck, also has now been attached to produce a pair of other projects that were already in development at the studio. They include Lucky, a live-action story about a sheltered movie-star dog, and Maggie, a comedy about a slacker who turns his life around with the help of a nanny.
