In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: a trio of music videos directed by E. Elias Merhige. Several famous directors have tackled remakes of Nosferatu, most noticeably Werner Herzog, and now Robbert Eggers. But one re-adaptation of Nosferatu, called Shadow of the Vampire, flew kind of under the radar. Its director is E. Elias Merhige, who has had an erratic but interesting career, starting out with the avant-garde arthouse-horror Begotten; following it up with the aforementioned film about Nosferatu-portrayer Max Schreck being a real-life vampire; making the interesting serial killer thriller Suspect Zero, and then continuing the work in the Begotten-trilogy by finishing it with the shorts Din of Celestial Birds and Polia...

Gina Gershon starred in the Wachowskis' first film as directors, the erotic neo-noir thriller Bound, which was recently added to the Criterion Collection. Gershon says she still regrets having missed out on the role of Trinity to Carrie-Anne Moss, saying she thought she was already cast for the part. Gershon's career continued regardless with some good action movies. The Matrix IP continues with Drew Goddard set to direct the next installment.
Lana and Lilly Wachowski are primarily known for directing The Matrix trilogy (Lana alone directed The Matrix Resurrections), but that wasn't their first film. In 1996, they wrote and directed the erotic thriller Bound. Starring Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon, the film was recently included in the hallowed Criterion Collection and given a re-release. February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.
“The Terminator,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Footloose,” “Taxi Driver” and “The Silence of the Lambs” all mark notable library offerings this month, in addition to “Superbad,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and “Eighth Grade.”
Despite HBO Max pulling a number of originals from its roster over the past several months, HBO Max originals premiering on the platform this month include a Dionne Warwick documentary, an adult European animated series titled “Poor Devil” and “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” based on the popular animated series.

The selection of titles for HBO Max in February 2023 will include the continuation of hit TV shows, premieres of holiday specials, and Oscar nominees. HBO Max’s January 2023 additions kicked off the new year with the premieres of TV shows like The Last of Us, which broke HBO records for having the highest jump in viewership for its second episode, and the original series Velma. The month also brought The Menu (2022) and the John Wick franchise to the platform’s library, with plenty more classic films and new releases set to drop on HBO Max in February.
In February 2023, HBO Max will host the streaming premieres of two 2023 Oscar nominees: Sam Mendes’ drama Empire of Light (February 7), which earned Roger Deakins a Best Cinematography nod, and HBO documentary All That Breathes (February 7), which is up for Best Documentary Feature. When screenwriter Zak Penn read galleys in 2011 for Ernest Cline’s “Ready Player One,” he had a thought: “This will never get made.” The sprawling novel was wall to wall with ’80s references, everything from movies “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai,” “Batman” and “Back to the Future” to video games Halo, Minecraft, Tomb Raider, and Dungeons and Dragons.
“It was so enormous, the scope was so huge,” Penn said in a phone interview. “It would cost $250 million. This guy sucked every interest I have in my brain and put it into a book. It appealed on a visceral level, but as a job, ‘This isn’t going to happen.'”
Two years later, the writer of McU movies like “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “The Avengers” reconsidered. Penn realized that his nostalgic 2014 documentary “Atari: Game Over” — in which Cline was a subject — was perfect preparation for adapting this cinematic valentine to ’80s pop culture.

Hasbro is further expanding into the cinematic space by finally bringing Rom: Spaceknight to the big screen. Zak Penn, who most recently adapted Ernest Cline's novel Ready Player One for director Steven Spielberg, has been tapped to write the screenplay for the movie. The project is being produced by Allspark Pictures, which was recently set up to turn Hasbro properties into live-action entertainment. Hasbro has been working with Paramount Pictures for years on the Transformers franchise and Rom will be no different.
Rom, which stands for read-only memory, is much like other Hasbro properties in that, it started life out as a toy and later was made into a series of comic books. Rom: Spaceknight was published by Marvel Comics from 1979 to 1986. In 2015, Idw began publishing a new series of Rom comics. The toy was a cyborg action figure released in the late 1970s, but wasn't a big success at the time.

Ja from Mnpp here christening 2015's final episode of "Beauty vs Beast" with one of my favorite movies of ever, which is celebrating it's 15th anniversary this week - E. Elias Merhige's Shadow of the Vampire, which fictionalized the filming of F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu by adding in some actual behind-the-scenes bloodsucking, was released on December 29th, 2000 -- I have strangely fixed memories of seeing this film for the first time, from the dreamy Art Deco opening credits on down; anyway it left a mark, so don't ask me what the hell happened to Merhige after this. He's only made one more feature-length film since, the 2004 serial killer thriller Suspect Zero with Ben Kingsley.
As for Shadow of the Vampire it didn't do great box-office-wise but it did manage to score two Oscar nominations - one for Make-Up and a much-deserved Best Supporting Actor nomination for Willem Dafoe, playing...

I remember when I was young, my father, a sort of rogue ecologist who learned everything he knew about rivers and their ecosystems secondhand, told me about these species of bottom feeders that lived in streams all over the Missouri and Mississippi river basins. I don’t remember what species they were but the thing about them was that they only flourished in polluted bodies of water. They didn’t flourish because of the pollution necessarily so much as their natural predators, killed off by the pollution, ceased to keep them in check and so their population would explode. Despite their usefulness as a gauge for the health of a stream, they were generally unwelcome.
I think I’ve come to regard Ben Kingsley in the same manner. It all started with a film called Suspect Zero (though really, it must’ve really started with House of Sand and Fog...

Thursday night, Collider attended the 40th annual Saturn Awards where the The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror celebrated the best genre storytelling has to offer. During the exciting and busy event, hosted by noted celebrity roaster Jeffery Ross, films as varied as Gravity, Child’s Play and Big Ass Spider all took home trophies. While covering the red carpet, we got a chance to talk with Underworld creator and Sleepy Hollow executive-producer Len Wiseman. During our chat, Wiseman told use about his exciting new scifi action film, Black Chapter and reveals its connections to the secret real-life history of the CIA. Plus, he talks about rejuvenating established properties, the hardest part of filming Total Recall, why he loves blowing up helicopters, his teenage Die Hard knockoff and more. Back in April, we reported that Wiseman was set to direct Black Chapter. Details on the project are scant because...

You might think that between the Underworld franchise and his duties as producing director on madcap TV drama Sleepy Hollow, Len Wiseman would want a break from action with supernatural elements. You would be wrong, because he’s agreed to direct Black Chapter, which features just such a mix.The Incredible Hulk/Suspect Zero writer Zak Penn is behind the script, which finds an FBI agent recruited for a top-secret military program in which spies learn paranormal abilities. It’s not as far-fetched as it might sound from that high concept pitch, since it’s inspired by real (and, in some cases rumoured) schemes from the past. “Black Chapter is a science fiction story that draws from our own history,” says Len Wiseman in a statement picked up by Deadline. “I’ve always been fascinated by the mysteries surrounding the CIA’s astral projection program during its Mk-ultra era. What if...

At the conclusion of last week’s Missing episode, one thing was very clear: Martin has a lot of explaining to do. And explain he did when I interviewed the man behind Suspect Zero, Keith Carradine!
Given his many years in the business, highlighted recently by a turn on Dexter as Detective Frank Lundy, I wondered whether the actor was drawn to action thrillers.
“I do love the genre," he said. "I find them very entertaining and this is a particularly accomplished one. [Creator Greg Poirier] has been masterful in the design of this show.”
As for Martin, what can one say about a man who seems so caring one minute... and so devious the next?
“He’s certainly a very complicated guy," Carradine said. "When he told Becca she was like a daughter to him, he meant that. People are complicated. As more is revealed about how he would up in this position,...

With only two episodes left in its first season, ABC’s Missing will keep the twists coming. Last week, we found out Martin (Keith Carradine) is actually the elusive Suspect Zero, the leader of an international group of rogue former operatives (including one Sean Bean’s Paul was investigating before his faux death) and the man behind Michael’s kidnapping. “There will be more reveals, for sure,” Carradine says, assuring us Martin’s motives will begin to become clear in tonight’s episode. Is there any chance he’s not as bad as we think he is? “Well, no one’s all bad,...

In a word: wow. Answers are what we wanted and "Answers" are what we finally got on this week's dynamite installment of Missing.
The episode started with the usual Bs struggle between the CIA accusing Becca of something while she was desperately just trying to find Michael.
Last week, Violet strangely set up Becca's escape and then stabbed Head CIA Lady Whose Named I've Been Informed of But I Just Don't Care Enough to Really Use. I'm still not really clear about what Violet is up to here aside from trying to screw over Becca. She seemed to know who Maksim was when she pointed him in Becca's direction but as we saw at the end of the episode, Maksim was never trying to hurt Becca.
I have to say that this episode literally had me on the edge of my seat, yelling at the TV. First of all, there...

This episode sacrifices some of the series’ usual breakneck pace of action to focus on plot. Much of the episode involves the CIA’s “Operation Songbird” that then-agents Paul and Becca Winstone conducted in Vienna in 1999, when their son was a boy.
We get the story through flashbacks as well as Becca’s narration during an interrogation—in an undisclosed location–by CIA official Jamie Ortega, who suspects her of working with a network of rogue agents, and through the narration of Martin,...

Becca has received a lot of leeway considering she's not a part of the CIA anymore. At the end of last week's episode, "A Busy Solitude," she and Giancarlo were finally taken into custody for all of the illegal things they have been doing in order to get Michael back on Missing.
In "A Measure of a Man," one of the head honchos at the CIA decided it was time to put a stop to this. I'm going to fully admit that for some reason I cannot for the life of me recall her name. If any of you do, feel free to toss it out in the comments. For now, I'll be referring to her as CIA lady. My apologies.
Okay, so apparently CIA lady, who I find irritating for some reason, has been doing a lot of research on Becca and her past cases. She thinks Becca not...

Despite audience disgust and critical flaming, William Brent Bell, director of last weekend’s big deal The Devil Inside and one-time adult film production coordinator, has landed a deal to helm The Vatican for Warner Brothers. Deadline Hollywood is reporting the deal was in the works before the holidays, but was fast tracked once the Warner money men saw The Devil Inside’s $34mil opening take. The Vatican is reportedly a conspiracy theory tale, scripted by David (Suspect Zero) Cohen.

See 25 Best Serial Killer Movies of All Time – Part 1

This is one of those classic serial killer films that came earlier than the others. A serial killer of blind girls, now there’s an interesting concept. This film was an earlier role for Uma Thurman who played the blind girl Helana Robertson. I believe this film brought her name into higher acting circles that attracted roles such as in Pulp Fiction. If you were hoping for a 24 film to wrap the series up, well you might be waiting a lot longer now. The news has just come out that 20th Century Fox have officially passed on the script. The script was written by Billy Ray (Suspect Zero, State Of Play), which was going to continue the story of Jack Bauer and tie up the TV series.
Howard Gordon the executive producer on the series has this to say: “As far as I know, it is in suspended animation. There is talk about re-approaching it. I understand (director/producer) Tony Scott is meeting with Kiefer to talk about ideas. People are still talking about it. I was disappointed Fox passed on the script but I’m certainly hopeful that the movie will get made at some point. Anecdotally, I’ve heard from people who are really missing the show and I do...

The Secret in Their Eyes was the surprise winner for Best Foreign Language Film during last year's Academy Awards, beating out the expected contenders A Prophet and The White Ribbon. Many were peeved, but the picture hadn't even been released in theaters yet, so most were unaware of what an affecting, engrossing film it actually is. Once it finally opened in the Us, the picture received glowing reviews, but didn't exactly light up the box office. Naturally, that means it's time for a remake. Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the original film, and they already have their director: Billy Ray, who wrote and directed the critically acclaimed Breach and Shattered Glass, and co-wrote the screenplay for the equally praised State of Play. (Psst, don't tell anyone, but he also co-wrote Volcano, Suspect Zero and Flightplan.) Billy Ray, not yet one to direct a film he hasn't also written,...

Episode Title: "Countdown"
Written By: Lisa Zwerling & Seth Hoffman
Story: April 29, the day foretold by the global blackout, has finally arrived. Mark Benford interrogates Lucas Hellinger, one of the men responsible for the blackout, but his unorthodox techniques get him in trouble with his bosses. Meanwhile, Demetri Noh and Zoe have a falling out that causes the FBI agent to take on a deadly mission alongside Janis Hawk and Simon Campos.
In Afghanistan, Aaron Stark struggles to save his daughter's life, while Bryce Varley gets a lead on Keiko in Los Angeles.
Downward Spiral: Part of the reason I can't get behind Benford is that he's so obsessed with preventing the future, but he can't follow such extremely obvious steps to avoid that future. Like Hellinger, for instance. If Mark beats Hellinger up, he dies, warns the terrorist. So what does Mark do? He beats Hellinger up. Then he goes out and gets drunk,...

Episode Title: "Course Correction"
Written By: Robert J. Sawyer
Story: A killer is targeting innocent victims who just so happened to have lived past their projected death dates, prompting the still alive Demetri Noh to launch an investigation. Meanwhile, Simon Campos has a chance to save his sister, but it requires him selling out the FBI, particularly Mark Benford. Speaking of Benford, it turns out that he has every reason in the world to fear his wife's flashforward, as Olivia's love affair with Lloyd Simcoe escalates.
A Novel Approach: Robert J. Sawyer — no relation to the "Lost" con man —wrote tonight's episode, and he just so happens to be the author of the novels that "FlashForward" is based on. This was his first crack at writing the television adaptation. So what did you think? Did he do a good job? Let's dig into the story a bit and find out!

I don’t watch TV much, so I’ve never seen an episode of ABC’s new FlashForward series which seems to be becoming a cult favorite amongst some, if the attention I’ve seen it receive on some blogs is any indication. Although, recent reports suggest that it may not live to see a second season, thanks to reported falling ratings.
However, I was just alerted to the fact that the show features a somewhat diverse cast of characters in prominent roles (Courtney B Vance, is one example), and there’s a subplot that takes place in Somalia of all places!
Here’s its premise: A mysterious event causes nearly everyone on the planet to simultaneously lose consciousness for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, during which people see what appear to be visions of their lives approximately six months in the future—a global “flashforward”. A team of Los Angeles FBI agents,...

Since we last saw "FlashForward" on ABC, the show has gone through a change in showrunners, banked a number of episodes and, according to executive producer Jessika Borsiczky, really figured out where it wants to go in the second half of the season.
When the show returns at 8 p.m. Et Thursday (March 18), it will begin a drive both to catch up with the April 29 that was in everyone's blackout visions and delve deeper into the characters' lives. The second half of the season, she says, is about "Can you fight your fate, do you want to fight your fate, and is the very act of fighting your fate going to make it come true?
"The biggest difference coming back is, I think we're going to have a lot more fun answering questions," says Borsiczky, who took over as showrunner after co-creator David Goyer departed to work on several movie...

Variety is reporting something we have been speculating for the past month: Fox's hit television series 24 will likely end after the conclusion of the current eighth season. The studio and network executives have declined to comment. But is this the end of the show? Apparently the studio is considering shopping the series to other networks, but interest will probably be limited due to the high costs involved. Previously: Last month it was announced that Billy Ray had been hired to pen the screenplay for a big screen 24 movie. All we know about the planned story for the feature film is that it will be set in Europe. Kiefer Sutherland and producers have said that the big screen movie would be "a two-hour representation of a day." Ray's filmography includes State of Play, Flightplan, Suspect Zero, Hart's War, Volcano and Moon director Duncan Jones' upcoming much-buzzed about project Source Code.

Well-known rapper and record producer Timbaland -- also known as Tim Mosley (to the IRS and to his mom) -- is making his prime time TV debut.
Though the prolific artist has had his music showcased on several series -- including "The Wire," "Gilmore Girls," "Entourage" and "So You Think You Can Dance" -- he hasn't done much acting. But that could be changing as reliable sources tell me Timbaland will cameo in the second "FlashForward" episode to air this year.
Word is, the cameo is very quick. Like Seth MacFarlane quick. But you will see Timbaland... if you're watching out for him.
So what do you think? Should Timbaland try his hand at a new career?

Think "Battlestar Galactica's" James Callis (Gaius Baltar) can help "FlashForward" get some of its sci-fi cred back?
ABC confirms to Zap2it that Callis has been cast in a major role on the freshman series, which will begin airing new episodes again next month.
Very few details about Callis' "FlashForward" character are known at this time, though Executive Producer Jessica Borsiczky did tell Sci-fi Wire that he will be a big part of the final episodes of this season, playing a "really exciting, unusual character" somehow mixed up with Olivia (Sonya Walger).
Any thoughts?
Will the arrival of Baltar bring you back into the "FlashForward" fold this spring?

ABC didn't waste much time in getting a new leadership team in place at its freshman show "FlashForward."
Jessika Borsiczky, Lisa Zwerling and Timothy J. Lea will take over as showrunners for the series, which returns to the air March 18, an ABC rep confirms to Zap2it. They take over for co-creator David Goyer, who will still be an executive producer but gave up his day-to-day duties on the show last week.
The network has also reduced "FlashForward's" episode order by one, from 23 to 22. The later-than-planned return (it was originally scheduled to come back March 4) meant that the additional episode wasn't needed.
Borsiczky has been an executive producer of the series from the beginning, while Zwerling has been a co-exec producer and has written a couple episodes. Lea is a veteran of "CSI: NY" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," among other shows.

"FlashForward" is going through another behind-the-scenes shakeup, with co-creator David S. Goyer stepping aside as showrunner.
The ABC series, which premiered to big ratings but tailed off during its fall run, is in the midst of an on-air hiatus and will return March 18. Goyer will still be "involved" in the show and retain an executive producer credit, the showbiz trades report, but he won't be the person in charge of the day-to-day operations.
Goyer's departure is the second showrunner change "FlashForward" has made in its short life. Mark Guggenheim joined the series after its pilot but left in October, ceding the reins to Goyer. ABC hasn't named a replacement for Goyer yet.
The news can be taken a couple ways. The more charitable view is that ABC still really believes in the show's potential (including DVR usage, it's averaging 10.4 million viewers and a 3.5 rating in adults 18-49) and wants to get it exactly right.

When Flash Forward returns in March, one of the main issues it will be addressing is the identity of Suspect Zero, as creator David Goyer said. The tall, dark figure lingering in the Detroit stadium has been plaguing the minds of fans ever since he was introduced. Even Agent Benford is stumped so far.
There really isn't much to report for Flash Forward these days and we might as well do something to liven things up a bit. We have but a few clues to go on if we start off an investigation, but we will. And I do warn you, this little inquiry could merely be a futile effort in uncovering the mystery of Suspect Zero.

March sees the return of FlashForward after a long winter break, during which it has undergone a rethink, and co-creator and executive producer David Goyer has promised to answer many of the fans' key questions.
So far, the show has posed several conundrums such as the similar blackout in Somalia, the ability of some people to change the futures they saw in their flash-forwards (in one case by a sudden suicide from the top of a building) and what exactly will happen on April 29, the date seen in all the visions.
In a group interview in California, Goyer revealed: "Who Suspect Zero is will be our first episode back. Even in that, we answer a ton of big questions and [do so in] pretty much every episode afterwards. I can't think of a question we don't answer by the end of the season."

During a set visit on Friday (Jan. 8), "FlashForward" executive producers David S. Goyer and Jessika Borsiczky fielded questions from the press about ABC's complicated freshman drama.
Turns out that instead of Thursday, March 4, "FlashForward" will return to ABC's schedule on March 18 instead. You can thank that pesky "American Idol" over on Fox for the delay.
To make up for the two-week postponement, the show will have a two-hour midseason premiere and a two-hour finale as well. As to how this will affect the very important date of "April 29" to the show's story arc, Goyer says, "We don't know. That may be one of the casualties of 'American Idol.'"
However, fans can look forward to a fun recap show that will air a few weeks before the premiere and that will include new material to reward loyal viewers, especially a "bomb" that will be end the recap special.
