Over more than 40 years in Hollywood, Denzel Washington has only ever reprised one of his characters: Robert McCall of The Equalizer trilogy. Nearly 30 years ago however, there was another potential franchise in the works for him that he, the studio, and director Carl Franklin were all eager to see work.

The Penguin recently concluded its critically acclaimed first season, with Oswald “Oz” Cobb reaching the pinnacle of the organized crime scene in Gotham City. The series marks a new dawn for television shows based on DC properties, given its dark gritty, and grounded tone, something fans have missed since the early days of the Arrowverse.
The Penguin finale scored the show’s highest IMDb rating (Credit: HBO).
With its season 1 finale, The Penguin not only impressed critics but also managed to establish one record it took Stephen Amell’s Arrow almost five years to achieve. Moreover, The Penguin‘s rating success also proved it superior to some of the other Arrowverse entries, which failed to crack similar numbers, and here is everything you need to know about it.
The Penguin Broke One Arrow Record in Just One Season
The Penguin is a spin-off series set in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe.

Denzel Washington is one of the most recognizable and talented actors of his generation, having a presence and charisma on screen that is virtually unrivaled. Over his stellar 40-year career, he has embodied some of the most morally ambiguous and larger-than-life characters that have made him an icon in cinema. In every role he plays, he is known for the ruthless authenticity and genuine immersion that he brings each character to life in his extensive filmography.
The 2000s were a decade when Washington continued his monumental run, performing in some of his most career defining roles, such as the energetic Detective Alonzo Harris in Training Day or the subdued and intellectual Melvin B. Tolson in The Great Debaters. His portrayals are usually the shining centerpiece of the films he appears in, and his aura brightens the rest of the cast around him. Denzel Washington has been one of the most respected Hollywood actors since his earliest roles in films like Glory, Cry Freedom and The Mighty Quinn. Demonstrating an impressive range across genres, from war and drama to action and science fiction, few leading stars can command the screen as well as the Malcolm X star. Arguably his best genre after his dramatic roles is thrillers, where he has been cast as detectives, journalists and federal agents.
Denzel Washington has one of the strongest careers in modern Hollywood, being incredibly selective when it comes to scripts and collaborators. Playing the roles of characters from literature, history and original scripts, the actor is almost always at his best as a heroic cop. That said, he isn't beyond playing villains, and the thriller genre has brought out the best of his talents, ensuring his status as one of the film industry's most recognized and acclaimed stars.

Fallen is Denzel Washington's most underrated movie, combining police procedural with supernatural horror for a gripping twist. Despite being a commercial and critical failure upon release, Fallen has since become a cult-favorite in Denzel Washington's filmography. The noir genre first grew to prominence in the 1950s, with stars like Humphrey Bogart and Orson Welles epitomizing the morally ambiguous protagonists that were essential to these early mystery films. It became interesting to see how the genre evolved and modernized within the subsequent years, but Carl Franklins 1995 masterpiece Devil in a Blue Dress felt like a deliberate throwback. With its classical mystery case, '40s setting, and charismatic performance by Denzel Washington, Devil in a Blue Dress felt like a refreshing example of old school filmmaking done right. Washington and Franklin then worked together again for the 2003 neo-noir thriller Out of Time.

After a gap of a few years and a messy-yet-secretive legal dispute between creators Doug Naylor and Rob Grant, Red Dwarf is rumoured to be back on its way to our screens once again with three new episodes. Which poses the question – how many more returns can it make before it finally draws to a close? How will the TV series that started with a pilot episode called “The End” end?
Red Dwarf is unlike any other science fiction franchise of comparable longevity. It is not like Stars Trek or Wars, an expansive universe full of side characters and unexplored domains for spin-offs to inhabit. Nor is it the adventure of a single character whose face changes on a semi-regular basis.
As part of the ongoing mysterious feud settlement, Rob Grant is launching Red Dwarf: Titan, which is set to give us a prequel/alternate universe take on Lister and Rimmer.

The iconic music in the film complements scenes, enhancing the mood and energy of key moments throughout the movie. Quentin Tarantino's attention to detail in selecting songs and incorporating them into scenes transports audiences back to 1969 Hollywood.

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome, and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.
But after a nearly two-year break from touring, the Stones emerged last year with the shockingly great Hackney Diamonds.

Coachella crowds are notoriously awful, but the response to Blur’s Saturday set was especially jarring.
By all accounts, the Britpop legends put on a phenomenal show. Their setlist contained several surprises, including rare performances of “Death of a Party,” “Out of Time,” “Trouble in the Message Centre,” and “Beetleblum,” as well as an on-stage collaboration with the indigenous Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers.
And yet, whether because the younger-skewing audience was unfamiliar with the band’s discography and/or because they had showed up early for Tyler, the Creator’s headlining set that was to follow, the crowd didn’t seem to vibe with Blur’s music. Video from the festival’s livestream (as seen below) captured a pretty lifeless crowd — even during performances of anthems like “Popscene,” “Girls & Boys” and “Song 2.”

Blur took the stage at Coachella on Saturday, and to close out their portion of the night, they brought out performers from the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers.
It was Blur’s first time at Coachella since 2013 (though Damon Albarn has made a few surprise appearances in recent years), and the band delivered renditions of some of their most beloved songs, like “Song 2,” “Girls & Boys,” “Beetlebum,” and more.
The Britpop legends first brought out a group of Bird Singers to perform a traditional piece titled “Bird Song,” honoring the culture and history of the indigenous tribes of the Coachella region. From there, the Bird Singers loaned their voices to Blur’s “Death of a Party,” and then returned at the end of the night to close out the set with “Tender.”
Elsewhere in Blur’s set, Albarn made an appeal for mutual understanding in a time of political polarization,...

Denzel Washington's highest paying role was in the movie The Little Things, for which he was paid $40 million, double his usual salary. Despite being his most lucrative role, The Little Things received negative reviews and is among the lowest-rated films in Denzel Washington's career. Washington's salary increase for The Little Things was a result of the movie's change in release strategy due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which impacted its box office performance.
Denzel Washington is one of Hollywood's biggest and best actors, but his highest paying role was actually for one of his worst-reviewed movies. Over the course of his entire career, Denzel became a bankable movie star who could help turn everything from action movies to awards-worthy movies into box office hits. His popularity and recognizability meant that his pay continued to rise. This resulted in him making about $20 million per movie starting in the 2000s thanks...

Each season of The Flash had highs and lows, but every season had at least a few great episodes. Crossover episodes, like "Crisis on Earth-x, Part 3" and "Elseworlds, Part 1", were obviously special, but The Flash's best moments go beyond its Arrowverse connections. Throughout its run, The Flash remained a strong foundation of the Arrowverse, combining classic DC Comics characters with compelling original storylines and leaving a lasting legacy in the world of superhero adaptations.
Each The Flash season has at least one great episode that summarizes the best things about the show, which ran from 2014 to 2023. The Flash evolved from an Arrow spinoff to one of The CW’s flagship titles, combining classic DC Comics characters with original storylines as part of a larger universe of superheroes. The Flash was one of the foundations of the Arrowverse, especially due to its time travel and multiverse themes, but the series also stood on its own.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we’re honored to chat with director Carl Franklin, whose seminal noir One False Move is now available from The Criterion Collection as a director-approved special edition 4K Uhd + Blu-ray.
Our B-Sides today are One True Thing, Out of Time, and Bless Me, Ultima.
We talk to Franklin about his early days as an actor, how he got the directing bug, what he learned making movies with legendary producer Roger Corman (and the other producer on one of the films who allegedly stole 80k of a 200k budget!), and the extremely underrated HBO mini-series Laurel Avenue from 1993.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

31 years after its initial theatrical release, Carl Franklin still can't believe "One False Move" happened.
The actor-turned-director took a crackerjack screenplay by a pair of struggling writers named Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, and turned what was supposed to be a direct-to-video thriller featuring a couple of familiar faces (Bill Paxton and Cynda Williams) into a buzzy critical darling. After a brief theatrical run, the film earned five Independent Spirit Award nominations, with Franklin taking home the trophy for Best Director.
Despite this acclaim, "One False Move" has remained an under-the-radar cult favorite amongst neo-noir fans, perhaps because it lacks the Coen Brothers' archness or the overripe sensuality of Lawrence Kasdan's "Body Heat." It's a quietly surprising, yet plenty violent thriller about a trio of criminals who, after committing a string of vicious murders, flee Los Angeles for a backwater Arkansas town run by police chief Dale "Hurricane...

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Annual - Out of Time #1 The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song from the original ‘90s cartoon is arguably as iconic as the Turtles themselves, though after the Tmnt’s most recent adventure, it turns out every word of it was a lie - at least, in one respect.
The theme song to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series ran at the top of every episode. Originally written and performed by Chuck Lorre, the song aimed to not only be a catchy tune that would get viewers’ collective attention, but also to actually introduce the Ninja Turtles to those watching. As performed in the song, each Turtle had a unique role on the team aside from simply wearing differently colored masks or wielding different weapons. Staind have fleshed out the details of their forthcoming album, Confessions of the Fallen, which will mark the band’s first new full-length since 2011. The 10-track record will arrive on September 15th via Alchemy Recordings/BMG. In addition, Staind have also debuted a new song off the set, the scorching “Cycle of Hurting.”
“Cycle of Hurting” is classic Staind, with heavy guitars, dark rhythms and Aaron Lewis’ tortured vocals, including some intense roars. “How can I face what’s under the surface / When nothing is working? / How can I break away from the burden / The cycle of hurting?” frontman Aaron Lewis sings in the chorus.
Regarding the dark lyrics of “Cycle of Hurting,” Lewis said in a press release, “I’m still working through my issues. Still working through my problems, and until then I’ll dream of better days. I hope that’s how everybody feels right now…better days are yet to come.

Award-winning musician Abel Tesfaye, known professionally as The Weeknd, has begun the process of slowly shedding his stage name. The singer has now changed his social media platforms to reflect his birth name.
“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” Tesfaye told W magazine earlier this month. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close The Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
“The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as the Weeknd,” he said of his upcoming yet-to-be-titled record. “This is something that I have to do. As the Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”

Mr. Robot may have been off the air since 2019, but it has not ceased to be a subject of conversation among its faithful viewership. Created by Sam Esmail, Mr. Robot helped launch the career of Oscar winner Rami Malek, who played the series’ quotable protagonist Elliot. Although Mr. Robot season 4 largely brought the series to a satisfying conclusion, closure is finally approaching in regards to one important aspect of the show.
Since its first season, the moody and thrilling world of Mr. Robot has been brought to life with the help of composer Mac Quayle. Quayle is an Emmy-winning composer whose previous work includes Pose and many surprisingly connected seasons of American Horror Story. While Quayle’s work on Mr. Robot concluded years ago, a final collection of his music from season 4 is about to be released. Screen Rant is excited to premiere “409.4 Fsociety Resurfaces” from Mr. Robot Volume 8—Original Television Series Soundtrack.

A year ago on Jan. 7, the Weeknd dropped his fifth studio album, Dawn FM. And to mark the occasion, the singer released a sultry new video for LP track, “Is There Someone Else?”
In the Cliqua-directed clip (the duo also helmed visuals for Dawn FM’s “Take My Breath,” “Sacrifice,” and “Out of Time”), the Weeknd wonders if the woman he is with is seeing someone else.
The clip opens on a couple playfully dancing and flirting as they enter a darkened apartment, before he is treated to a seductive...

The Flash season 1 nailed its Harrison Well twist, yet the Reverse Flash storyline was so good that it doomed the rest of the show. Although Smallville had featured Superman on a TV budget for over a decade, a Flash TV show centered on a fully-formed scarlet speedster seemed almost impossible to pull off. Arrow had become a success for the CW and a landmark for superhero TV shows, but translating Flash’s powers to live-action on a TV budget would always be more changeling than following a vigilante with no superpowers. The Flash season 1 found the perfect balance between visuals and story partially thanks to its Reverse Flash story.
Similar to Arrow, The Flash went for a procedural structure in which every week Barry Allen would face a metahuman created by the explosion of Star Labs’ particle accelerator. While this episodic nature could have made The Flash into a very predictable show,...
