With things constantly being swapped out or deleted from your favorite streaming service, a commitment to physical media should be stronger now than ever before. And thankfully both big studios and smaller boutique labels understand how important physical releases are.

“Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid” MGM
One of the most hotly anticipated home video releases of the year is here – and it was worth the wait. Sam Peckinpah’s highly contested western, about an older Pat Garrett (James Coburn) hired to track down and kill Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson), was taken away from the filmmaker in post-production and released in a truncated version that he and several of the cast and crew members outspokenly derided. In Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact," the U.S.S. Enterprise travels back in time to the year 2063, the year humanity first invented faster-than-light travel and, almost immediately thereafter, made first contact with an alien species. By "Star Trek" lore, the maiden voyage of the Phoenix, the very first warp-capable ship, caught the attention of a passing Vulcan vessel, causing them to change course, land on Earth, and shake hands with humans. It was the franchise's "Welcome to the neighborhood" moment. It also started a massive utopian rebuilding of Earth, as it had just survived several devastating wars. By "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's estimation, Earth had to almost destroy itself to have a "moment of clarity." After that, the technological, post-war, post-scarcity, post-capitalist utopia could begin.
The inventor of warp drive was Zefram Cochrane, who fashioned his ship out of a disused bomb casing. In "First Contact,...

Issa Rae didn't find out how her dad, a Senegal-born doctor, felt about her HBO series Insecure until a couple months after the first season wrapped. In fact, she thought he might hate it. "Then in our family group chat, he dropped a really inappropriate reference about Lawrence's back shots to Tasha," she says with a laugh, referring to the shocking, explicit finale scene where her character's ex-boyfriend rebounds with his bank teller. "I was like 'Wow, he made it to the finale! That's cool! This is not the place to show me,...

Growing up in the ’90s, my path to the glory of Pam Grier took an odd route. I was probably about 12 years old watching an HBO First Look for John Carpenter’s Escape From L.A., and they spent what seemed an inordinate amount of time fawning over this woman playing Hershe Las Palmas, the transsexual crime boss formerly known as Carjack Malone. Being a snot-nosed kid, I had no idea who Grier was. Of course, since then I’ve come to know and appreciate her as genre royalty, with a list of credits extending from ’70s blaxploitation film like Coffy and Scream, Blacula, Scream to all sorts of film and television roles spanning five decades. That said, whenever I see or hear mention of Grier, my first thought will be of her bantering in a put-on deep voice to an eye-patched Kurt Russell.

People often talk about over-hyped and under-hyped films, and with good reason, but when a film strikes you as getting exactly the right amount of hype, it’s rare indeed. This is exactly where Exodus: Gods and Kings seems to fall. It’s a film that seems like it should have gotten more attention, especially considering the cast, and the fact that it was directed by Ridley Scott.
It turns out that the film, while actually quite good, delivers to precisely the level of interest the world seems to have dictated is its due.
A thematically unique spin on this, or any other, biblical telling, Exodus starts us off with Moses (Christian Bale) in the prime of his Egyptian Prince-ish-hood. He’s about to take care of some upstart tribe or other with his “brother” Ramses (Joel Edgerton), and a prophecy kicks off Ramses’ dislike of the man he has...

In Cameron Diaz, “Saturday Night Live” has its second consecutive host making an appearance after a lengthy absence. Although Diaz has hosted the show three times before, this is her first time doing so since 2005. Will there be “Annie” sketches? Probably! Will there be a Jamie Foxx and/or Quvenzhané Wallis cameo? Possibly! Will Bruno Mars make an in-sketch appearance in addition to his musical role tonight? Likely! Will this be an exciting episode or one that puts audiences to sleep faster than Thanksgiving dinner? Who knows! As always, I’ll be liveblogging the show in real time, assigning grades to each segment. As always, I’ll remind you that comedy is subjective and the grades don’t have any more power than you allow them to have. As always, a few of you will ignore that last statement and quibble over a “B-“ versus a “B”. It’s cool.

While recent host Seth Rogen took nearly five years to return to “Saturday Night Live,” Charlize Theron makes that period look downright short by comparison. Her one and only other hosting gig took place in November 2000, making tonight’s return thirteen and a half years in the making. (To be fair, filming “Aeon Flux” took a lot out of everyone involved with that production, so we can’t fault her too much.) While preferring dramas to comedies in terms of her film choices, Theron does have “A Million Ways To Die In The West” on the way to your local movie theatre. Pairing her with Seth MacFarlane in that film might seem strange, but that’s probably precisely the point. That film sure looks a long way from "Monster" and "North Country." So maybe we’ll see a different performer than the one that graced Studio 8H at the turn of the century.

Update: I've also added the HBO First Look from the flick via Coming Soon. It's short but worthy of posting. Aren't feeling too optimistic about The Wolverine, are we? I think deep down inside you guys want this to work but unfortunately what you've seen so far doesn't seem to be doing it for you. I think it's at least worth giving a shot. The most anticipated and polarising film of 2012 is coming to Blu-ray later this year and details of the bonus content have been found on Amazon.fr.
Anyone hoping for a significant number of deleted scenes to fill in the film’s many plot holes will be disappointed as there are only 15 minutes worth. But the most exciting thing on the disc may be the inclusion of the first and final draft of the script by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.
Prometheus began as a straight Alien prequel written by Jon Spaihts until Damon Lindelof conducted a re-write that became the final product. If they do actually include Spaihts’ original draft, it will be fascinating to see how he originally planned to link it to Alien and if it would have actually made a better film.

Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore ponder the possibilities in The Art of Getting By.
The Art of Getting By is a coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama film starring Emma Roberts (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) and Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) set against the backdrop of very beautiful New York City.
The movie spins the tale of George (Highmore), a lonely and fatalistic high school teen who’s made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, and Sally (Roberts), a popular but complicated gal who recognizes in him a kindred spirit. Might there be love in the air? Or maybe just a deep friendship and mutual respect?

Sony Pictures will release a new Blu-ray of the Ben Stiller-directed, Jim Carrey-starring dark comedy The Cable Guy on March 1st, 2011. The film was much-hyped due to Carrey’s first $20 million paycheck, which was an exceedingly high payday. After the successes of Ace Venture and Dumb and Dumber, it felt like a no-brainer, but the film barely earned $60 million at the B.O., and was critically panned.
Oh, how time has been kind. The film’s dark tone has been re-evaluated and given the proper praise since. The disc will house some good extras as well:
* Gag Reel
* HBO First Look
* Comedy Central Canned Ham Presents: The Cable Guy
* Basketball
* Medieval Times
* Breakfast
* Ending Mud Fight
* Karaoke Alt. – Bust A Move
* Nightmare Camera Test
* Leslie Mann Audition
* Music video: Jerry Cantrell, “Leave Me Alone”

Finally, one of the box-sets we’ve all been waiting for! The Alien franchise is one of those series that’s perfect for Blu-Ray. It is a benchmark for the format and you can check out our full review of The Alien Anthology below.
Alien:
How much can one say about the timeless classic sci-fi horror film that hasn’t been said before? Well, very little. This is still Ridley Scott‘s finest film to date and it hasn’t aged a bit. Every beat of tension still lands with a punch, the alien is still one of the best ever to be put on-screen, and it’s atmosphere stays eerie and unsettling throughout.
Alien is the king of the monster movies. Very few horror films can achieve the level of investment Scott and co. did with making you actually care for the ensemble, even outside of Ripley. What...

Capitalizing on the sequel release, Cats & Dogs hits on Blu-Ray, and the family-friendly lark looks better than ever… to children of the right ages.
Putting together a fairly form-standard spy adventure, only pitting the secret organizations of cats and dogs against one another, the film’s talking (and otherwise CGI cutesified) animals hooked younger audiences. Helping to kick off a wave of animal-centric CGI entities, Cats & Dogs fuses so many stereotypes of child appeal that it was one of the safest bets Hollywood managed in the last decade.

Notice of one such release landed in my Inbox recently while I was away on vacation. Even at the risk of publishing old news, though, I have to shout about this one. The Alien franchise is coming to Blu-ray!
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release the 'Alien Anthology' on Blu-ray on October 25. That's a whole, err, far too many days away. It sounds like it will be well worth the wait, though.
The set will include all four of the films in the pre-Alien(s) v Predator series and there will be two versions of each film. There is also a fifth disc titled 'Making the Anthology,...

In addition to the excellent Criterion Blu-ray news we reported earlier today, we have two more items that will please HD cinephiles. First up, Blu-ray.com confirms a story we ran a couple weeks ago that hinted the Blu-ray of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse was on the way. While there are no details about the set (although Edgar Wright said he did a commentary track for his fake trailer, Don’t), you should mark your calendars for October 5th. I’m excited to see these films put back together because that’s how they were meant to be seen.

I was aghast to see this film all but ignored by the Academy Awards this year. Spike Jones has plucked the magic from an enduring childrens classic and created a timeless cinematic fable. In an age where the term kids movie is synonymous with explosions, poop humor and freakish hyperactivity Where The Wild Things Are takes its own sweet time establishing an environment and group of characters that reverberate with wild rumpus energy one moment and revel in a quiet sunset the next. It's other worldly and utterly of the heart.
The extras included here are almost as geared towards producing some extra whimsy as they are in giving us a peek into the nuts and bolts of the films history and production although the HBO First Look Episode offering a more condenseversion of the solid amount of detail in in the other shorts What's really missing is a commentary...

Chicago – Spike Jonze’s “Where the Wild Things Are” is a beautiful, moving, daring, complex, gorgeous piece of filmmaking that was underappreciated during its theatrical release but that I can guarantee you will have a long, beloved life on Blu-ray and DVD. With well over 200 films seen in 2009, “Where the Wild Things Are” rose to the top for this critic. It may not win any Oscars on Sunday, but history will regard it as the best film of last year.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
“Where the Wild Things Are” may have radically divided critics and audiences when it was in theaters but there’s one thing not open to debate - it is undeniably one of the most remarkably ambitious films in years. Instead of literally adapting Maurice Sendak’s beloved book, Jonze and his collaborative team, including credited co-writer Dave Eggers and regular star Catherine Keener, have tried to recreate the feelings,...

Movie Review:
★★★★½
As most probably did, I happened upon Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are in the 1st grade when I found it wedged on a shelf in the school library. I was reading a lot higher than the book’s level by that point, but the sumptuous color illustrations of monsters running about with a boy in a wolf costume instantly hooked me.
That first copy, smelling of old glue with jelly stains on the backsides of the pages, was transporting and I can still vividly remember turning through it for the first time. My guess is that Jonze and Eggers might have similar memories–if not for Wild Things then some long-ago childhood fragment–and they press them into this film version as one would press leaves into an album.
In fact, that’s probably the reason Wild Things manages to transcend the trap of picture book adaptations.

Making a political satire with real bite that manages to retain its humor is quite a difficult task, but it’s accomplished with some real flair by In The Loop (Mpi, Rated R, Blu-Ray-$29.98 Srp) which, in its tale about a low-level British politician’s unfortunate comments leading to a joint war effort alongside the Us, is probably our generation’s Dr. Strangelove. Chicago – Sometimes catalog titles are pulled from the vaults and given the HD upgrade for tie-in reasons that are obvious, but why now for Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement”? Is it because “Atonement” breakthrough star Saoirse Ronan is appearing in “The Lovely Bones”? Did they sense thematic tie-in with the same Tuesday’s release of “Bright Star”? Whatever the reason, these are two underrated dramas, a pair of the most luscious period pieces of the last ten years and both look remarkable in 1080p.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Joe Wright may have stumbled a bit with “The Soloist,” but his first two directorial efforts are both well worth the time, a good movie followed by a great one. The good, “Pride & Prejudice” may fall a little short largely due to superior versions of this often-told story but it features some of Keira Knightley’s best career work and amazing technical...

Who wants a butterbeer? The next round is on me. Well, not just yet, but soon. After all, it’s only a few short months before “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” opens for the first time as part of Universal’s “Islands of Adventures” theme park at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.
Since Universal first announced the development of a Harry Potter theme park, fans of the series from around the world have been clamoring to learn more. Luckily, there was a short sneak peak of the park found in the special features on the two-disc edition DVD and Blu-ray of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. While short, the clip did offer a whole mess of details about the park, which have been compiled quite nicely by Orlando Attractions Magazine.

Since 2001 I’ve been a Harry Potter nerd through and through. I jumped on the bandwagon a little late (the fourth book had just come out and the first movie was on its way to theaters), but for the eight years I’ve been on it I’ve been so devotedly. I geek out on Harry Potter like it’s my job. (Thanks to the good folks here at Jpp, for today at least, it is.)
The ultimate edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is impressive. It includes the theatrical version, the extended version, and two discs of bonus features.
But I’ll get to them later. First, a quick word on the movie itself. As die hard a fan I am, I’m well-aware that the first two Harry Potter films are not cinematic masterpieces. (I suppose none of them really are, but we’re going to pretend otherwise.

Just a few days ago we got our first look at Part 1 of the upcoming 7th and final installment in the Harry Potter franchise, entitled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, via a couple of officially released images. They weren’t terribly exciting, basically just showing off the cast of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
Now, straight from studio Warner Bros. we have our first proper look at footage from the last Harry Potter flick via the first teaser trailer. The teaser is featured on the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince DVD/Blu-ray (which comes out in a couple of days, Fyi) as incentive for fans to run out and buy it.
The actual teaser footage lasts just under a minute, but the whole video lasts one minute and 50 seconds and features introductions by director David Yates and producer David Heyman, as well as some behind-the-scenes footage.
