Two years after his first Oscar win, Brendan Fraser's next leading movie finally gets a release date. During the late 1990s to the 2000s, Fraser was one of Hollywood's brightest stars. He led The Mummy franchise and had other starring roles in films like George of the Jungle, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and Journey to the Center of the Earth.
However, the actor took a career break in the 2010s, due to many factors that led to the actor shrinking away from the public eye. Later that decade, Fraser slowly started returning to Hollywood with roles in projects like DC's Doom Patrol and Steven Soderbergh's No Sudden Move.
After his Oscar win for The Whale, Fraser also appeared in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and 2024's Brothers. The actor was also set to play Firefly in the canceled Batgirl film. He came back in...

For almost a century, the Looney Tunes have been a part of cinema royalty. Originally created as a series of animated theatrical shorts before eventually moving to television, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and company have entertained countless audiences with their wacky antics and penchant for hitting each other over the head with various heavy objects.
Yet despite being such an important part of film history, the past couple of years have not been kind to the Looney Tunes, with the latest indignity being the removal of all the original cartoons off of HBO Max (aka the streaming service formerly known as Max). But things seem to be looking up for the gang: Their live-action animated hybrid "Coyote vs Acme" has been saved from the trash bin of history, and their film "The Day the Earth Blew Up" was one of the best animated movies of 2024 and has officially made back...

The WonderCon panel for “Gremlins: The Wild Batch,” the upcoming second season of the Max animated series, just got wilder, as we can exclusively report that original “Gremlins” director (and “Wild Batch” executive producer), along with John Glover, who played Daniel Clamp in “Gremlins 2” (and who has a voice role in the new season of the snow), will join the panel, which will be held on Saturday, March 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center in Room 207.
Other panelists taking part in the screening and Q&a include “Gremlins: The Wild Batch” showrunner and executive producer Tze Chun, executive producer Brendan Hay and composer Sherri Chung. The panel will include an exclusive screening of a never-before-seen episode, followed by an in-depth discussion of season 2. The second half of season 2 premieres on April 10 exclusively on Max.

Warner Bros.’ Mishandling of ‘Looney Tunes’ Under David Zaslav Is Nothing New — Just Extremely Silly
While it looks like there may yet be some justice in the case of “Coyote Vs. Acme” — if it indeed finds a new home and a theatrical release with Ketchup Entertainment — fans of the “Looney Tunes” still find themselves at the mercy of far greater forces than Bugs Bunny behind an animator’s desk.
Warner Bros. Discovery pulled its catalog of the original “Looney Tunes” cartoons, a collection of animated shorts that stretch from 1930 to 1969, beginning on March 16 as part of a wider effort to rebrand the streaming platform as a place much more for adult and family content as opposed to children’s programming. One consolation is that there are some iterations of “Looney Tunes” made between 1995 and 2022 that are still available. Another is that this isn’t the first time Warner Brothers has decided to vanish “Looney Tunes” content.

Warner Bros.' immortal Looney Tunes franchise is finally returning to theaters this week with The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, the first time since 2003's Looney Tunes: Back in Action. Sufferin' succotash, I plumb forgot 2021's Space Jam: A New Legacy. But then, haven't we all? Or shouldn't we? The movie, the first ever fully animated feature-lengthLooney Tunes film, no less, features beloved characters Daffy Duck, Porky Pig (both voiced by Eric Bauza), and Petunia Pig (Candi Milo) looking to save Earth from the devious schemes of Peter MacNicol's delightfully over-the-top alien known only as The Invader.

We’ve had Looney Tunes for nearly a century. Leon Schlesinger produced their first short Sinkin’ in the Bathtub alongside animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising in 1930. Almost 100 years later, the only Looney Tunes feature films (outside of theatrically released compilations) have been two Space Jams, 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action, the tragically unreleased Coyote vs. Acme, and now the latest offering: The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.
Directed by Peter Browngardt, this is a charming affair. Modeled after sci-fi B-movies of the 1950s and starring Looney Tunes legends Porky Pig and Daffy Duck (both voiced by Eric Bauza), The Day the Earth Blew Up starts with a UFO landing. The spacecraft takes off on the roof of Porky and Daffy’s broken-down house (bequeathed to them by surrogate father Farmer Jim) just before crashing. Robert Picardo is an accomplished singer and actor whose career has lasted 45 years and shows no sign of slowing. He has been performing professionally since he was in college in the mid-1970s, appearing on stage in high-end productions like Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" and singing in his college a cappella choir. After college, he was recognized for his performance in a 1976 production of David Mamet's "Sexual Perversity in Chicago."
His movement to television was natural for a hard-working actor, starting with small roles in notable hit shows. He appeared on two episodes of "Kojak" in 1977 and has never had a "down" period since. He thereafter popped up in "Taxi," "Silver Spoons," "Alice," "Benson," "21 Jump Street," and 15 episodes of "The Wonder Years" as the hard-nosed Coach Cutlip, in addition to dozens of other TV shows that are too plentiful to list here. Warner Brothers has disappointed a number of movie fans in the last number of years as the company sent multiple films into oblivion for tax write-offs. A few of these projects include Batgirl and the Scoob! sequel, but the center of attention for the past year has been Coyote vs. Acme. The live-action/animated hybrid feature would have been the latest in a long line of Looney Tunes films in this style. It would have followed in the footsteps of Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action. Now, while fans are still holding out hope for Coyote vs. Acme’s release, you can unwind by watching Back in Action for free.

Controversial Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is selling off a sizable fortune’s worth of stock in his own company. Elmer Fudd must finally be about to ice Bugs Bunny — so long as he can keep that double-barreled shotgun pointed away from his own ass.
Ever since Zaslav took over the media mega-corporation following the merger between WarnerMedia and Discover Inc. in 2022, his tenure at the head of one of the most powerful entertainment empires on the planet could be described by many animation fans as “cartoonishly evil.” Following a period of unsustainable streaming expansion, Zaslav imposed harsh austerity measures on Wbd and, specifically, its animated properties as he canceled completed films like Coyote vs. Acme, destroyed the classic cartoon streaming service Boomerang, gutted Cartoon Network and removed almost every animated show from the Max streaming library.

Feature films have not been kind to the Looney Tunes. There was a time when the wacky adventures of Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny and their animated pals were the best and funniest shorts on the silver screen, an era that lasted decades. But most of their longer movies were repackaged classic skits, thinly strung together by new bookend material based on whatever movie or TV show was hot at the time, like “Fantasy Island” or “Ghostbusters.” Then of course there were the “Space Jam” films, two of the most creatively bankrupt and shamelessly tacky brand exploitations in the history of [checks notes] everything.
Until now the only great “Looney Tunes” feature was the one that completely flopped, Joe Dante’s inspired and hilarious “Back in Action,” which smartly skewered the callow capitalism that made the “Space Jam” movies a cinematic crime. The new film, “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,...

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie has recently released a new trailer that serves as both a reminder that Looney Tunes still have the potential to dominate the big screen and the lost potential that was Coyote vs Acme. The Looney Tunes have recently re-entered the public mind with the intense discourse surrounding Coyote vs. Acme; Warner Bros. Discovery shelved the film directed by Dave Green as part of a tax write-off. The aforementioned process ended with the film no longer being able to be released despite being completely finished.

The film premiered at the Annecy Animation Film Festival to rave reviews and reactions, further justifying the purchase of the movie. Anyone who was depressed to see “Coyote v. Acme” scrapped from the Warner Bros. release calendar should take solace in the news that there’s still another Looney Tunes adventure coming to the big screen. Daffy Duck and Porky Pig are set to team up in “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” which opens in February 2025 after an Oscar-qualifying run this month.
The film, which was produced by Warner Bros. If it succeeds at the box office, it could be seen as more evidence that the audience for a film like “Coyote v. Acme” exists among the moviegoing public.

A big month for horror films at the box office has been propelled even further, as Smile 2's opening weekend total has launched the film onto a top 20 list already. The film grossed $23 million during its domestic box office opening weekend, which puts it #20 all time for movies based on short films. Smile 2 out-earned Looney Tunes: Back in Action, the 2003 film led by Brendan Fraser and Steve Martin, by more than $2 million, but fell just short of Sling Blade, the 1996 classic written and directed by Billy Bob Thornton, who also stars in the film. Sling Blade grossed $24.4 million domestically and saw Thornton nominated for an Oscar for his performance while also taking home the Academy Award for Best Writing, but Smile 2 is poised to move past it and further up the "movies based on a short film" rankings in the following days.

The late nineties and early 2000s marked the peak of Brendan Fraser’s career as a leading man. The 1992 comedy classic, Encino Man put him on the map in a big way, and he had several other comedy hits throughout the decade, including George of the Jungle (along with an underrated drama called School Ties). But, it was 1999’s The Mummy that truly elevated him, with him cast as the wisecracking, Indiana Jones-style hero in what turned out to be one of the year’s biggest hits.
Yet, one movie Fraser did pretty soon after The Mummy has all but been forgotten, the live-action/ stop-motion hybrid Monkeybone, which was directed by The Nightmare Before Christmas’s Henry Selick. In it, Fraser played a harried cartoonist who meets his most famous creation, Monkeybone (voiced by John Turturro) while in a state of limbo following a car accident. Bridget Fonda, Chris Kattan and Rose McGowan co-star.

Joe Dante, best known for directing 1984's "Gremlins" and its sequel, thrives in the 1950s B-movie genre. Flashes of cartoon comedy can also be found in his work, such as 2003's "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," along with satirical dark comedic aspects in films like "The Burbs." The '80s experienced a boom in sci-fi adjacent films that mimicked the Spielbergian formula where the wondrous nostalgia of childhood mixed with the otherworldly awe of extraterrestrial existence, and Dante incorporated aspects of this in his 1985 science fantasy, "Explorers."
There are several factors behind the commercial failure that greeted the film on its release: a rushed production, along with the release of "Back to the Future" around the same time, overshadowed most of the film's merits, which were appraised positively by critics at the time. Although "Explorers" is no "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," the film's innate charm helped it garner a cult following over the years,...

From his early work like the Roger Corman-produced “Hollywood Boulevard” and the found footage extravaganza “The Movie Orgy” to the deliriously self-referential “Gremlins” films and “Looney Tunes: Back in Action,” Joe Dante has always been one of the most cine-literate of all directors, a filmmaker preoccupied with our relationship to the movies we watch and with cinema’s larger role in the culture. Dante’s 1993 comedy “Matinee” is possibly his greatest film in this regard, a meditation on the role horror movies play in our lives and a love letter to the people who make them. It follows a few days in the lives of kids who live on a Florida military base during the buildup to the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962; as the terror of the real world increases, they take refuge in the monster movies of Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman), a producer who arrives in town to screen his latest horror flick,...

In 2021, in the months leading to the release of "Space Jam: A New Legacy," the New York Times published an editorial which said cartoon character Pepé Le Pew "normalized rape culture." In that same piece, the author also wrote that Speedy Gonzales had friends who "helped popularize the corrosive stereotype of the drunk and lethargic Mexicans."
In recent years, "Looney Tunes" stopped featuring rifles in new portrayals of Elmer Fudd, so why couldn't change its portrayal of Pepé Le Pew or Speedy, too? While France did nothing to defend Le Pew, Latinos in the U.S. and across Latin America jumped at the chance to defend Speedy Gonzales from never saying "Ándale! Ándale! Arriba! Arriba!" again. Comedian Gabriel Iglesias, who voiced Speedy in "Space Jam 2," defended the character on social media.

Roger Corman, a legendary filmmaker, has died at age 98, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking independent films. His work includes horror classics like Little Shop of Horrors, but almost more significantly, he was responsible for developing the careers of many future Hollywood icons. Corman remains beloved by cinephiles and filmmakers everywhere, and his impact on the art cannot be understated.
It's an inevitable but nonetheless mournful moment for cinema tonight, May 11, as the groundbreaking filmmaker and producer Roger Corman has died at the age of 98. The director was still working right up to the end, and never truly stopped over the past 70 years. Corman directed roughly 50 movies and produced literally hundreds, and was a trailblazer for independent film, often working outside the Hollywood system to produce wild, subversive, or nasty movies beloved by many. As a director, he's perhaps best known for his unique horror movies.

Looney Tunes: Back in Action offers a wacky blend of physical comedy and meta humor, making it perfect for fans of the cartoon antics. With a star-studded cast and zany gags, this film is a delightful reminder of Looney Tunes' enduring comedic potential. Looney Tunes: Back in Action is a campy, fun-filled movie that showcases the best of blending live-action and animation.
The Looney Tunes characters have been an integral part of our cartoon pop culture for nearly a century. Their endurance is no surprise, as those early features with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and more arrived at the height of the Golden Age of Animation. Even today, these classics are still enjoyed by audiences young and old. What is a surprise is the fact that it took until 1996 for the Tunes to receive their first big-screen movie. Coyote vs. Acme was set to be the first Looney Tunes film in theaters in over 20 years, but unfortunately, the movie has been canceled. The upcoming Looney Tunes movie, The Day The Earth Blew Up, promises a modern twist on classic characters facing mind-controlling aliens. Warner Bros may favor a simpler Looney Tunes movie over Coyote vs. Acme, aiming for an entertaining film without breaking the bank.
Formally announced back in the summer of 2018, Coyote vs. Acme was on track to finally break an over-20-year-old curse from Warner Brothers regarding a Looney Tunes theatrical release (Space Jam: A New Legacy does not count since it was released on Max). The last big screen entry audiences received regarding this cartoon franchise was Looney Tunes: Back in Action in 2003, which sadly was a financial failure.

Meta movies are films that acknowledge their own existence or that of their actors, studios, or create processes, as well as stories in which the fourth wall is broken. Nailing a meta film is not easy. Meta movies include Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Deadpool, Barbie, and even Inception.
There have been plenty of great meta movies that can get audiences confused, yet entertained. A meta-movie can be identified as such when it makes reference to itself or breaks the fourth wall, which often adds a layer of complexity to its plot. By acknowledging what's happening behind the camera, a meta-movie can intrigue audiences in such a way that the average film cannot.
The first example of the concept, which is also referred to as meta-cinema, can be traced back to as early as the 1940s and was also very popular in art cinema in the 1960s. Over the years,...

Warner Bros. cancels projects under new CEO, mirrors meta-commentary in Back in Action movie. The cancelation of Coyote Vs. Acme reflects an imbalanced, commercial approach to filmmaking.
The Coyote Vs. Acme drama was oddly predicted in a 2003 Looney Tunes movie with impeccable meta-commentary scenes. The Looney Tunes constitutes a significant cartoon franchise dating back to the 1930s, responsible for some of the most iconic and innovative animated characters of all time. The Simpsons have developed a reputation for "predicting the future" with bizarre segments that have imagined real-world events years before they happened, and while Looney Tunes may not have the same fortune-telling reputation, one movie scene bears an uncanny similarity to current drama in the film industry.
Coyote Vs. Acme was a project that began production in 2018 and was eventually filmed in 2022, mixing live-action stars like John Cena with beloved animated characters. However, in November 2023, Warner Bros. canceled Coyote Vs.

Coyote vs. Acme could have been a great Looney Tunes movie, but its cancellation is a huge blow to the franchise. Despite a positive reception from animatiors, Warner Bros. may never release Coyote vs. Acme due to monetary reasons and high demands. The film's potential success and emotional core could have brought the iconic Looney Tunes characters back into the spotlight.
On paper, Coyote vs. Acme seemed to be a home run for Warner Bros. Discovery, but the film's likely cancelation is a huge blow to the Looney Tunes franchise. Although the Looney Tunes roster of characters remains iconic across pop culture, the characters haven't had a terrific showcase in recent years. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the rest of those characters remain as timeless as ever, but their feature-length exploits in the 21st century have been lacking..

Casino Royale (1967) is the best James Bond parody film, featuring a zany premise and multiple versions of James Bond. The movie breaks a major Bond rule by killing off all the Bonds and sending them to Heaven and Hell. Casino Royale introduces the first women characters, older individual, and villain all named James Bond – each with compelling and well-developed personalities.
Though multiple entertaining James Bond parodies exist, the best one is an official 007 movie that came out 56 years ago. Since Dr. No came out in 1962, the Bond franchise has been a worldwide hit. However, the movies also quickly grew old because they’re pulpy genre fiction. As such, filmmakers began parodying the films, poking fun at the franchise, which centers on the eponymous martini-drinking, womanizing spy. When discussing the best James Bond parodies, the most popular choices include Austin Powers, Johnny English, and Looney Tunes: Back in Action. These...

Sufferin’ succotash! Warner Bros caused quite the stir online Monday evening when a false report said beloved Looney Tunes shorts would leave Max, the subscription-based streaming service. The error arrived as a part of the studio’s “What’s New on Max This December” press release, stating departures for classic Looney Tunes cartoons, The Looney Tunes Show, and Joe Dante’s 2003 live-action animated hybrid Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
“Looney Tunes was included in error as a title leaving the platform,” read the statement, shedding light on the status of the classic shorts. “This is not the case and the show will continue streaming on Max.”
Fans revolted when reports about the classic shorts leaving Max hit the internet. I was hosting an episode of the Talking Comics podcast when the story hit Twitter, and I ranted about the departure alongside my co-hosts. I’m sure that conversation will age well.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform Max caused a bit of stir on Monday when it sent out its list of films and television series being added to and leaving the service in December. Included on the list of shows being taken off Max was “Looney Tunes,” one of the studio’s most cherished properties. The news sent “Looney Tunes” fans and Max subscribers into a frenzy on social media, with many infuriated at Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav for seemingly stripping Max of “Looney Tunes” content after his recent decision to scrap the “Looney Tunes” movie “Coyote vs. Acme” despite filming being already completed.
Was this the latest step in the total erasure of “Looney Tunes” at Warner Bros. as many fans feared? Not at all, according to Max. The streaming service later sent out an updated list and the following statement: “Please note – a revised What’s...

Looney Tunes shorts will remain on Max, despite previous reports suggesting they would be removed by the end of the year. The initial listing of their removal was a mistake, causing public outcry directed at Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. While the shorts are safe, the 2003 film Looney Tunes: Back in Action is still scheduled to be removed by the end of 2023.
Looney Tunes shorts will not be leaving Max, despite previous reports they would be removed from the platform by the end of the year. In a list sent out by Max titled "What's New on Max This December," the streamer listed classic Looney Tunes cartoons as leaving Max on December 31. This led to a public outcry online, with many aiming their anger at the decision at Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
Now, TVLine reports that classic Looney Tunes shorts will not be leaving Max after all.

The error comes a couple weeks after Wbd announced it would be scrapping the already-completed Coyote Vs. Acme for a tax writeoff. The David Zaslav-run company reconsidered the decision after fan backlash and set up screenings for streamers who might want to buy it.

Often forgotten and rarely represented, the Universal Monsters are a terrifying cast of creatures, creeps, and outcasts dating back over a century. While characters like Dracula, The Bride of Frankenstein, and The Mummy tend to get top billing, many horror creations unfortunately seem underappreciated as Universal seeks to reimagine its classic catalog of horror films. Whether created in a lab, hailing from outer space, or lurking in the shadows, these lesser-known silver-screen stars prove the Universal pantheon of horror icons are more interesting than most give them credit for.

More troubling news from the lot of Warner Bros. Discovery, folks. Ever since Discovery's acquisition of the legendary Hollywood studio as a part of WarnerMedia last year, the policies, decisions, and mandates coming from CEO David Zaslav have been increasingly zany to the max.

Many years before LeBron James starred in Space Jam: A New Legacy, there were plans for an entirely different Space Jam sequel that would've starred legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk.
Recently, Hawk appeared as a guest on the YouTube series Hot Ones, where he shared the story of Warner Bros. getting in contact in the early 2000s with an offer to star in Space Jam 2. Of course, the sequel would've transitioned from basketball to skateboarding, though it would have similarly seen Hawk teaming up with Looney Tunes characters. Hawk said he was pretty stoked about the concept after meeting with producers, but the project wound up fizzling out, with the skater referring to the unmade film as the "one that got away. Flops like Terminator: Genisys and The Mummy ended entire trilogies and franchises, killing future plans for sequels. Movies like Divergent: Allegiant and Looney Tunes: Back in Action underperformed at the box office, leading to the cancelation of future movies in their respective series. The critical failures of Fantastic Four (2015), Godzilla (1998), and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword resulted in the cancelation of planned sequels.
Some movies fail so hard that their reviews and box office receipts end up killing other unmade movies. A successful movie can spawn an entire franchise, and in some cases, lead to the revival of a whole genre. However, this proverbial sword cuts both ways. A truly disastrous film can kill a potential series or end a sub-genre’s reign of box office dominance. 2001’s Valentine ended the '90s slasher resurgence with its box office failure, while 2007’s horror sequel Hostel 2 flopped so hard...

Casting director Russell Boast, producer Annabelle K. Frost, producer Nana Greenwald, writer-director Tamar Halpern, animator David Kuhn, producer-director Sheldon Larry and broadcast journalist May Lee have been hired as full-time faculty at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.
The new faculty members have worked on some of the most prominent film and television projects of the past 30 years, including the Harrison Ford starrer The Fugitive, David Fincher’s Seven and Disney’s Pocahontas. They will assume their new roles on Monday, Aug. 28, at the start of the 2023-24 academic year.
“This is an awe-inspiring group of teachers, whose range of experience adds a wealth of valuable knowledge to our already-impressive faculty,” said Stephen Galloway, dean of Dodge College. “I can only wish I’d had professors like this when I was in film school.”

Frankly, Brendan Fraser would be better off without a revival in The Mummy 4, and the franchise should stay entombed to the past in favor of his career. Like in several household cult classics, including George of the Jungle (1997) and Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), Fraser was the face of The Mummy franchise. His hand in effortlessly joining absorbing adventure with waggish comedy defined an era of cinema for an entire generation, which established his acting career as a notable force in the '90s and early 2000s until such time he would famously take several steps back from the spotlight.
After struggling with his health, his mother's passing, and an alleged sexual assault (via Hello Magazine), Fraser gradually stopped taking leading roles and eventually took a break from the industry. His disappearance was unexpected considering he stood on a $550 million goldmine for his Rick O'Connell role in The Mummy universe...
