Since the earliest days of cinema, the Western genre has produced some of the richest and most adventurous films in the cinema. These movies document the lives and journeys of characters of varying moral codes who try to survive the brutal Frontier, taking on rival gunslingers, Native American warriors, and the harsh environment. Despite the genre's reputation for gritty stories, plenty of Westerns are accessible to younger viewers.
While Westerns work best when they take a gritty approach to the Old West, there are plenty of movies from the genre perfect for kids that play up adventure instead of violence. From classic swashbuckler heroes of the Western Frontier to animated gunslinger stories, the list of kid-friendly Western movies is surprisingly long. The Wild West remains a place for childhood escapism; these movies are great examples.

Disney is renowned for its animation, but the company has still seen animated movies flop at the box office. Many of the early best Disney animated movies performed well enough at the box office, while the biggest flops came in the company's later years. This is likely due to a myriad of factors, including basic inflation meaning a greater loss. Disney also has more box office flops after the rise of 3D animation, possibly due to an increase in animated blockbusters in general, meaning more competition and higher standards.
Many box office flops become cult classics, animated Disney movies included. This reflects how the marketability and advertising strategy may not be the best representation of a movie's quality. The most underrated Disney movies are generally not the highest earners but still deserve the attention of the Disney fanbase. Unfortunately, Disney Animation is unlikely to take a chance on the same...

“Gladiator II” is set in Ancient Rome and North Africa, but where was the Ridley Scott epic actually filmed?
Like the first film, portions were shot in Morocco and Malta, while director Ridley Scott also filmed key scenes in his native England.
Here’s where Rome, the Colosseum and the African kingdom of Numidia were created, some on locations used by Scott in previous films.

The arena where Lucius (Paul Mescal) fights Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) was rebuilt in Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara, Malta, the same location that was used in the first “Gladiator.” The fort, which was built in the 17th century by the Order of St John, was also used in “Troy” and “Napoleon.”

Quick Links Viggo Mortensen's Career in Westerns Spans Multiple Decades The Dead Don't Hurt Walks the Line Between Traditional and "Spaghetti" Western The Dead Don't Hurt Will Not Be Viggo Mortensen's First Time Writing and Directing
This article contains spoilers for The Dead Don't Hurt (2024).
Viggo Mortensen's latest movie, The Dead Don't Hurt, is the first time audiences have seen the actor in a Western since Appaloosa in 2008. Mortensen continues to be a versatile actor and Renaissance man, hopping easily from high fantasies like The Lord of the Rings to gritty and adventurous Westerns. Especially in the early 2000s. Still, Mortensen has kept away from the genre, favoring variety in his projects. From dramas based on true-life experiences like Green Book (2018) and Thirteen Lives (2022) to adaptations of well-known novels like The Road (2009) and On the Road (2012) -- he's never nailed himself down to one type of film.

Viggo Mortensen returns with The Dead Don't Hurt, a Western where he wears multiple hats, including director, writer, and star. The story focuses on Vivienne, played by Vicky Krieps, as she navigates love, independence, and challenges in the male-dominated Wild West. Mortensen's non-chronological storytelling adds depth, revealing character fates early on, leading to a nuanced exploration of love and forgiveness.
Viggo Mortensen is not only returning to the Western genre, but also to the director's chair, with the moving drama The Dead Don't Hurt. While best known to some for his turn as Aragorn in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mortensen has a well-regarded history in the Western genre, starring in the likes of 1990's Young Guns II, 2004's Hidalgo and 2008's Appaloosa. He has also been steadily making a name for himself as a writer, director and composer in the past few years following his...

Overall, the 2000s were a rough decade for Westerns. Along with the 1980s, the 2000s saw the Western genre at its lowest point, both in terms of critical acclaim and box office success. Many high-profile Westerns from this era, such as The Missing, The Alamo, and Hidalgo, received mixed to negative reviews from critics and account for some of the decade's biggest box office bombs.
Although the 2000s as a whole represent a lull in Western filmmaking, the decade still provided some fantastic Westerns. The best Westerns of the 2000s encompass a wide variety of Western sub-genres, from traditional and revisionist Westerns to neo-Westerns and comedy Westerns. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford are among the greatest Westerns of the 2000s.

Viggo Mortensen loves him a good Western. The actor has starred in several of them, 2008’s “Appaloosa,” 2004’s “Hidalgo,” and even more recent arthouse international films like “Jauja” and “Far from Men” employ elements of this genre. Mortensen has also moved into writing and directing features in recent years, following the critically-acclaimed “Falling,” and so his next directorial effort, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” is also returning to the dangerous Western frontier.

Survival expert Les Stroud finds numerous inaccuracies in the 2004 Western, Hidalgo, which stars The Lord of the Rings' Aragorn actor, Viggo Mortensen. Stroud analyzes a quicksand scene from the film, pointing out that quicksand is generally not present in the middle of the desert away from water, and that it's thicker than depicted. Hidalgo earned mixed reviews from critics and underwhelmed at the box office, but Mortensen's performance and some thrilling race sequences make it a worthwhile watch.
Hidalgo, a Western starring Lord of the Rings actor Viggo Mortensen, is found to feature a number of inaccuracies by a survival expert. Released in 2004, director Joe Johnston's Hidalgo features Mortensen, who is best known for playing Aragorn in Peter Jackson's epic fantasy trilogy, as an American cowboy who takes part in a grueling horse race across the Arabian Desert. In 2004, Viggo Mortensen starred in a major, big-budget production, fresh from his role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. In December, the third Lord of the Rings installment, The Return of the King, not only won Best Picture but swept the Academy Awards, winning all 11 of its Oscar nominations. Building off his newfound star power from The Lord of the Rings, Mortensen was cast in the epic adventure film, Hidalgo, as real-life cowboy Frank T. Hopkins. Disney asserted that the film was based on a "true story," and Hidalgo presented a dramatized account of Hopkins' participation in a deadly desert race called the "Ocean of Fire." The race required Hopkins and his loyal pinto mustang, Hidalgo, to race across a deadly streak of the desert, 3,000 miles in Saudi Arabia for a $100,000 prize. The film was directed by Joe Johnston, a former design and visual effects artist...

Dominic West is in the "very early stages" of making a movie about legendary horse Red Rum. The 'Crown' star is hoping to direct a film about the late equine, who won the Grand National three times in 1973, 1974, and 1977, and he is surprised a motion picture about the sporting legend hasn't been made before. He said: "I'm hoping to get a film of Red Rum organised."It's very, very early stages. I'm hopefully going to direct it."But West believes he is "too old" to portray Red Rum's trainer Ginger McCain, because he is keen to depict some of the late star's early life. He said: "I'd love to play Ginger, but I think I'm too old. We want to do some of his early life and his struggle and meeting Beryl [McCain's wife] and all that, and I think I'm too old for that really."The star...

Robert Dalva, the film editor who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the touching family adventure The Black Stallion and collaborated with director Joe Johnston on five films, including Jumanji and Captain America: The First Avenger, has died. He was 80.
Dalva died Jan. 27 of lymphoma in Marin County, California, his son Matthew Dalva told The Hollywood Reporter.
Dalva attended USC film school in the same class with George Lucas, and he went to work with him and Francis Ford Coppola in 1969 as the pair launched their innovative American Zoetrope production company in San Francisco.
The relationship paid off when Lucas hired Dalva to handle second-unit photography — he shot the land speeder going across the desert — on the original Star Wars (1977).
On the Coppola-produced Black Stallion (1979), starring Mickey Rooney in an Oscar-nominated performance, Dalva partnered with director Carroll Ballard, who also did second-unit work on Star Wars.

Square Enix started May off with a bang by announcing that the company sold Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Interactive, as well as those studios’ respective franchises, to Embracer Group. That umbrella organization already has its fingers in many game studios and franchises (such as Thq Nordic’s Darksiders and Deep Silver’s Saints Row), and this recent sale has only added more potentially valuable franchises to Embrace Group’s already sizable library.
Of course, this transaction raises obvious questions about what games Embracer Group actually gets out of the deal. As is often the case with these kinds of deals, the answers to those questions aren’t as straightforward as you might think.
Obviously, Square Enix franchises such as Final Fantasy were never on the table, and the announcement also states that Square Enix will retain ownership of Western-developed games such as Just Cause, Outriders, and Life is Strange. Of course,...

‘The Lost City’ Review: Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s Chemistry Carries Charming Jungle Comedy
In Adam and Aaron Nee’s “The Lost City,” a wild, careening screwball comedy set in the jungle, the stars are on full display — and they need to be. See, the directing duo are following a similar roadmap used by “Romancing the Stone,” the Indiana Jones franchise, and Tomb Raider: colossal big-budget adventures dependent upon the stars who lead them as much as the exotic locations they call home. Here, a quartet of marquee names carry a knowingly pastiche romp whose lightweight charm somehow impedes its path to rom-com success.
You can’t totally blame the Nees for leaning heavily on their ensemble. In a slapdash comedy filled with big punchlines — and even bigger explosions — they’ve assembled a couple of the best comedic personalities available in Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. It took G. Moore roughly 15 minutes to make the song that upended his life. Last July, he Googled a “SoFaygo type beat” (in honor of one of his favorite rappers) and picked an instrumental full of synths that waft upwards like bubbles blown by a light breeze. While recording a hook, Moore altered the tone of his voice to sound like a robot trying to hum the same progression as the synths. “That was me experimenting,” he recalls. He recorded and manipulated each word individually, then “pasted it all together...

This review of “Cryptozoo” was first published after the film’s premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
If you ever talk to an animator, they are likely to share two opinions very quickly: one, “Animation is not a genre.” And two, “Animation isn’t exclusively for children.” Dash Shaw is one of many contemporary artists expanding the idea of what animation can do, and who it can be for, and with his second feature, “Cryptozoo,” his well of imagination is matched only by his precision at executing his ideas.
“Cryptozoo” delivers on the promise of Shaw’s first feature, “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea.” This time out, the writer-director (in collaboration with animation director Jane Samborski) is even more assured as both a storyteller and as a crafter of images, be they outrageous or gorgeous, haunting or hilarious.

"Being free, to Dash, was everything." Utopia Media has debuted an official trailer for a documentary called Moments Like This Never Last, a profile of the New York artist Dash Snow. Directed by photographer Cheryl Dunn, this first premiered last year at Doc NYC and is getting a small theatrical release (in NY & LA) next month. Snow rejected a life of privilege to make his own way as an artist on the streets of downtown New York City in the late 1990s. Developing from a notorious graffiti tagger into an international art star, he documented his drug- and alcohol-fueled nights with the surrogate family he formed with friends and fellow artists Ryan McGinley and Dan Colen before his death by heroin overdose in 2009. Drawing from Snow's unforgettable body of work and involving archival footage, Cheryl Dunn's exceptional portrait captures his all-too-brief life of reckless excess and creativity. Also featuring artist Dan Colen,...

Wait a minute. Are we somehow half way through the year already? That feels impossible but here comes month number five all the same. With its list of new releases for May 2021, Amazon Prime is highlighting some of its more intriguing original series in awhile.
The first original of note is The Underground Railroad. This series from Barry Jenkins tells the story of one woman’s desperate bid for freedom in the Antebellum South and arrives on May 14. After that comes Solos. This intriguing anthology has one hell of a cast including Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Constance Wu, and more. The project will premiere on May 21 and each of its seven episodes promises to be quite different.

A classic Star Wars character is getting ready to make his return to a galaxy far, far away. Dash Rendar, who fans will know from Shadows of the Empire, is the subject of an upcoming story in the Star Wars Insider: Fiction Collection Vol. 1. While this collection will feature tales about a number of characters, this particular inclusion is of note as it acknowledges one of the biggest stories that is no longer a part of the official canon in the franchise.
An excerpt from Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnoff's tale And Leebo Makes Three recently made its way online. The selection quickly name-dropped Dash Rendar, who is at the center of the tale. A piece of artwork depicting the character, who should look familiar to anyone who played the Shadows of the Empire video game for the Nintendo 64, was also revealed. The opening paragraph from the story reads as follows.

As the upcoming Resident Evil Village looks to terrify some with its classic monsters and excite others with its giant vampire ladies, fans everywhere find reasons to reflect on the greatest franchise in horror game history. Yet, I’m willing to bet that even some of the biggest Resident Evil fans haven’t heard about the “missing” game in the franchise: Resident Evil: Dash.
For over twenty years, rumors of a canceled project known simply as Resident Evil: Dash have divided the Resident Evil fanbase. For some, it’s the ultimate missing part of Resident Evil‘s legacy. To others, it’s one of the longest-lasting urban legends in video game history and a rumor that, much like a Resident Evil zombie, never seems to die.

Exclusive: Arthouse streamer and theatrical distributor Mubi has acquired all rights to Sundance documentary Faya Dayi in the UK and Ireland, Latin America, Italy, France, Germany, Turkey and India.
Jessica Beshir’s feature directorial debut goes on a journey into the highlands of Harar, Ethiopia, to observe the rituals of khat, a powerful plant that Sufi Muslims chewed for religious meditations – and which is Ethiopia’s most lucrative cash crop today. Through the prism of the khat trade, the film charts the stories of people caught between violent government repression, khat-induced fantasies and dangerous journeys beyond borders.
Faya Dayi will also screen at Visions du Réel, Hot Docs Film Festival, and the Seattle International Film Festival this month. Brooklyn-based Mexican-Ethiopian filmmaker Beshir also produces the feature.

When most movie fans think of horses in motion pictures, they tend to gravitate naturally to Hollywood blockbusters like Hidalgo or The Horse Whisperer, or even European cinematic projects like The Mustang or The Turin Horse.
However, there are plenty of amazing Asian movies that cater for horse lovers everywhere.
Here we take a look at just some of them, and discover the ways in which Asian directors, producers, and actors go about incorporating long-nosed beasts into their movies.
Horses have long been mainstays of Asian cinema because they have been ever present in popular culture since the beginning of time Grand Prix – Yun-ho Yang
The most well-known horse racing movies tend to focus on horses and jockeys from places like the US and UK, where big races like the Grand National and Gold Cup take place.
But that is not to say that horse racing movies do not pop up in other far-flung places.

With News of the World, composer James Newton Howard returned to the Western genre for the first time in many years. In concert with director Paul Greengrass, he’d craft a more somber, inward-looking score than is often heard in the genre—“broken” music for a broken nation.
The Universal Pictures title centers on Captain Kidd (Tom Hanks), a Civil War veteran who travels across the U.S. to share the day’s news with small-town folks. While in Texas, the lonesome character encounters a 10-year-old girl named Johanna (Helena Zengel), who had been abducted at a young age by the Kiowa tribe, and looks to return her to her family.
In conversation with Deadline, Howard breaks down the range of instruments in his score that coalesced into something “uniquely special-sounding.” The eight-time Oscar nominee also touches on the highlights of his first collaboration with Greengrass, and the exciting projects he has coming up,...

Den of Geek was recently invited to play Velan Studios’ Knockout City, a competitive, team-based, over-the-top take on dodgeball set to drop as a new EA Original. The game releases May 21 for $19.99 on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, and is backwards compatible on Xbox Series X/S and PS5. In addition, there is cross-play and cross-progression functionality across all platforms, too. It’s clear, then, that Knockout City is EA‘s latest attempt to tap into a very competitive online multiplayer market after the success of Apex Legends.
The core gameplay mechanic of Knockout City is about as simple as can be: throw and catch. As in traditional dodgeball, two teams (either 3v3 or 4v4) collect balls and hurl them at each other to score points, and can catch balls to defend themselves. The big change to the actual game of dodgeball is that instead of the field...

Falling marks the directorial debut of celebrated actor Viggo Mortensen, who has been nominated for three Academy Awards and is an accomplished musician in his own right. He teams up with genre icon and Hollywood legend Lance Henriksen to play a father-son duo that is somewhat based on Mortensen's own upbringing. Though don't call Falling a biopic. Viggo expertly weaves moments from his childhood into a contemporary tale about dementia that is as equally heartbreaking as it is captivating.
Falling will land in theaters this Friday, February 5, while simultaneously debuting on digital and On Demand for areas that are still affected by movie theater closures across the country. The story is told with a lightening pace and enough dark humor to keep audiences on edgy and completely enthralled until the climactic confrontation between John (Viggo Mortensen) and his father Willis.

“When I get a call saying, ‘Do you want to do a Western?,’ my answer is always yes,” says “News of the World” composer James Newton Howard. “I love Westerns.”
Previous horse dramas for the eight-time Oscar nominee have included “Wyatt Earp” and “Hidalgo.” His collaboration with director Paul Greengrass was his first, and he visited the New Mexico location during shooting more than a year ago.
“The New Mexico desert is always inspiring,” Howard says. “The vistas are limitless and magnificent, and the silence was fantastic. It was one of my few visits to a set that I really enjoyed.”
Yet, Howard admits, “It took a while to find the voice of the movie.” Greengrass sought a “broken sound,” he says, reflecting the feeling of post-Civil War America, and asked for authentic 19th-century instruments to convey the period and South Texas locale. Fiddles, guitars and banjos are heard, along with mandolin,...

“Greyhound” cinematographer Shelly Johnson vividly recalls those anxious days before filming began when he was still waiting on the arrival of the Sphero 65 lenses. Johnson was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts panel, conducted virtually by this writer (watch the exclusive video above). “I wanted the Sphero 65 because they are old and they are a marvelous pairing with this modern camera. The camera separates the colors and the lenses meld them back together. That combination is a lot of giving the movie the presence that it has.”
“Greyhound” is set against the backdrop of the Battle of the Atlantic, with American ships filled with troops and supplies, playing a game of cat and mouse to avoid the German U-boats. Tom Hanks adapted C.S. Forester’s novel “The Good Shepherd” and plays the captain of a fleet of three dozen ships.

Does it get any more festive than snow in New York? I know many, many people have the lifelong dream of spending Christmas in the Big Apple and I have to admit that it is a dream that I also share! The closest I am probably ever going to get to this dream was the opening moments of the new Netflix original series Dash and Lily which involves a panning camera which showing the classic New York buildings complete with snow falling from the sky!
Dash and Lily follows all the conventions of your classic teenage ‘relatable’ series; for example the contrast between Dash who hates Christmas with a passion, against Lily who loves the festive period.

Between the iconic location (New York’s famed Strand Bookstore), the perfect time (New Year’s Eve at midnight) and the ludicrously romantic ambience (literal fireworks!), the final scene of Dash & Lily‘s first season finale is about as perfect as it could be. Is it any wonder why executive producer Joe Tracz says it’s his favorite page-to-screen moment in the Netflix series?

The Christmas-themed romantic comedy, Dash & Lily, recently premiered on Netflix. Dash and Lily are polar opposites, who share completely different opinions of the wintry holiday. Nonetheless, the two connect through a red notebook and challenge one another with a series of dares, pushing one another out of their comfort zones and helping each other.

Netflix’s holiday rom-con “Dash & Lily” centers on two characters with very different hot takes on Christmas: Dash (played by Austin Abrams) hates it with a burning passion and Lily (Midori Francis) loves it with all of her warm heart.

Wo celebrate the launch of this title we spoke to Abrams via a Zoom call. Please forgive our old-fashioned back-drop, we were staying in a hotel in Kent.
Abrams tells us what attracted him to this project and whether he read the novel it’s based upon. He also spoke about working with Reinhart, and recounts his own high school experience. We also speak about what he learnt from his time collaborating with Stiller, and whether he too has any ambitions to step behind the lens one day and direct.
