The splatter master, who has spent a most of his 25-plus year career making movies ranging from Cabin Fever and Hostel to Knock Knock and Thanksgiving, has partnered with Media Capital Technologies for the venture, which includes not only producing and distributing original films theatrically, but also carving out a place for horror television, gaming, podcasts and live events.
“I’ve done this very successfully and everything that I’ve done for this zone has made a lot of money for a lot of people,” Roth tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Now it’s time to put it all under one umbrella,...

In the early 2000s, at the same time directors like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie were pushing the limits of violence in American cinema with “Cabin Fever” and “The Devil’s Rejects,” a parallel movement emerged in France. Dubbed cinema du corps or “New French Extremity,” the trend was characterized by extremely confrontational horror films that assaulted the audience with their combination of filmmaking skill and visceral gore.
Many of these movies no longer feel quite so shocking, their tropes now absorbed into mainstream horror. Marina de Van’s “In My Skin,” however, retains its power to disturb 23 years after its release. Survival horror movies always were staples of the genre. From the dark caves of The Descent to the shark-infested waters of The Shallows, seeing how characters could survive nature and all of its elements drew audiences in, especially in the 2000s and 2010s. 2024 brought new releases Arcadian and Never Let Go to the survival horror subgenre. The A Quiet Place franchise received universal praise from critics and audiences, and all three entries performed extraordinarily well at the box office. Seeing characters facing more realistic, terrifying scenarios could often evoke more fear than the paranormal or supernatural could. The average person was far more likely to find themselves fighting to survive the elements rather than a demon or ghost haunting their home or following them around every street corner. Broken bones, wild animal attacks, and being unable to take on Mother Nature were far more likely to have happened to the...

If you ask the millennials in your life, those at the younger age of the generation will likely be able to tell you where they were the first time their home phone rang after they saw Gore Verbinski’s The Ring. Or maybe it’s just me, but that’s trauma for ya, folks! The terrifying movie first arrived in cinemas in 2002 and kept the scary vibes of the year going, alongside other favorites like 28 Days Later and Cabin Fever. And right now, the movie that traumatized so many of us more than two decades ago is now streaming on Peacock.

In 2006, Stephen King wrote an apocalyptic horror novel that remolded the contagion metaphor into something atypical. While zombies are front and center in this paranoia-fueled tale, these creatures are not reanimated corpses who have mutated beyond recognition, à la the infected in "The Last of Us." Instead, these zombies are former cell phone users who have transformed after a global network signal called The Pulse is sent out, turning them into rabid killers. This novel, "Cell," captures the unprecedented chaos brought about by this unlikely situation, with a struggling artist named Clayton serving as our entry point into this world on the brink of collapse.
It is worth noting that King wrote "Cell" during a time when cell phones weren't as accessible as today (to the point that they have evolved into a necessity), offering a technologically-wary perspective of a phenomenon yet to happen. This pessimistic outlook serves the purpose...

George Folsey Jr., the longtime producer and film editor for director John Landis, has died at the age of 85, according to his family.
The son of 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer George J. Folsey, whose credits included “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “Forbidden Planet,” Folsey Jr. got his start in editing at Kabc in Los Angeles, where he edited documentaries and news reports for broadcast in the 1960s.
He then moved into cinema by learning the trade at MGM, where his father had worked, alongside “Grand Prix” Oscar-winning editor Henry Berman. His first feature film project was Alexander Singer’s “Glass Houses,” a 1972 film in which Folsey was editor, cinematographer and producer.
A year later, Folsey was hired to edit John Landis’ debut feature film “Schlock,” a sendup of “King Kong” in which an ape man chased out of his cave wanders into a Southern California neighborhood and develops an unrequited crush on a teen girl.

Eli Roth is synonymous with gruesome and gory movies. A renowned member of “The Splat Pack”, the director is known for pushing the boundaries with extensive torture sequences within his movies. Roth has often taken inspiration from real-life events, with Hostel inspired by a horrifying murder website. However, it is his directorial debut Cabin Fever that has the grossest real-life connection, with the movie’s events inspired by a real life infection Roth once contracted.

Eli Roth’s trampoline scene from Grindhouse stands as one of the anthology’s most infamous moments, and the horror director returns to break down the iconic kill. Released in 2007, Grindhouse is a double feature paying homage to 1970s exploitation cinema, comprised of Quentin Tarantino's slasher Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez's zombie-comedy Planet Terror. The anthology also included faux trailers by prominent horror directors, including Roth’s Thanksgiving, a holiday-themed slasher trailer packed with over-the-top gore and satirical humor.
In a conversation with Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo San Francisco (where Screen Rant was a media partner), Roth revisited Thanksgiving's now-iconic trampoline gag, where a cheerleader doing a split meets a gruesome end on a knife. Roth contended that this scene became the standout gross-out moment in Grindhouse, beating the efforts of his fellow gore directors. Here's what he had to say:

Eli Roth, the director of horror films like Hostel, Cabin Fever, and last year’s slasher gem, Thanksgiving, has offered a well-timed update about the continuation of the holiday horror movie that terrified slasher and Black Friday fans last year. The sequel to Thanksgiving was quickly greenlit in November 2023, and Roth is now preparing to begin shooting next March. He also confirms it won’t be a prequel, some characters will return, and he will not spend more money than is required to successfully bring the "John Carver" back for more.
Speaking to IndieWire one year after Thanksgiving was released to both audience and critical acclaim, Roth reveals his next step is to make an equally appealing sequel that will satisfy horror hounds. The first outing holds an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and even though it’s a young movie, it has more than enough entertainment value to become a Thanksgiving horror staple.

Turkey toys with detachable heads. Coloring books about a killer pilgrim. A gruesome holiday board game that encourages you to die. Framed by a cornucopia of these twisted “Thanksgiving” keepsakes, director Eli Roth arrives on Zoom as happy as a clam.

While Lost may center around the main character passengers of Oceanic Flight 815, the J.J. Abrams show featured many memorable guest stars, including the late, great Lane Reddick. The series ran for six seasons, from 2004-2010, and became an absolute water cooler show for North American audiences. Fewer shows had more fan theories than Lost, as viewers loved to debate the meaning of supernatural phenomena like the Smoke Monster and "The Others".
One of the most popular Lost fan theories is that Oceanic Flight 818's survivors are actually dead, and that the island is their purgatory. This theory is supported by the large amount of biblical references in the series, both overt and implied. For example, the beloved character John Locke is seen as a representation of Jesus Christ. Lost network ABC leaned into this in a particularly memorable piece of promotional art that depicted the show's cast posed like The Last Supper painting,...

Since its debut in 2003, NCIS has captivated audiences with its gripping naval investigations and complex characters, including Emily Fornell, whose sudden death shocked fans. Over the years, the CBS procedural NCIS universe has introduced numerous recurring characters, with Tobias Fornell and Diane Sterling being particularly memorable. The Cabin Fever pancakes scene might be the strangest in the Eli Roth debut horror movie, and it still makes very little sense all these years later. Roth has had a varied directorial career, and whether one loves or hates his films, it's hard to deny that they're usually at least memorable. That began with Cabin Fever (2002), a bizarre blend of horror and comedy. One minute, a character shaves their leg's skin off due to a terrifying flesh-eating virus; the next, Roth makes a cameo as a stoner. The tone of Cabin Fever is all over the place.
How much of that odd sensibility was informed by Roth himself becomes quite apparent when watching the 2016 Cabin Fever remake, which stuck to the original very closely but seemed to lack any of its charm or heart. As much weirdness as can be found in Cabin Fever, the award for the oddest scene goes to the "Pancakes!

James Watkins' Speak No Evil comes with the undetachable baggage of remaking Christian Tafdrup's Danish day-ruiner from only two years ago. Blumhouse's initial announcement made me balk — Tafdrup's Speak No Evil is a modern feel-bad destroyer of souls. Thankfully, Watkins handles this Americanization with the utmost "justification" (in remake terminology). It's Blumhouse's best movie this year by a country mile, evoking the essence of Tafdrup's vacation nightmare while swerving into a climax that aggressively differentiates itself. Watkins understands cinematic misery (see 2008's Eden Lake) but doesn't care to replicate Tafdrup's seismic shocks — 2024's Speak No Evil is its own dreadful beast.

Eli Roth's Borderlands was a big-budget flop, missing the mark by casting against type and aiming for a PG-13 rating. Death Wish's 2018 remake lacked the passion of the original, failing to evoke the same outrage. The House with a Clock in Its Walls aimed for fun, but ended up feeling like a third-rate Harry Potter clone.
From Cabin Fever to Borderlands, Eli Roth has had a lot of ups and downs in his filmmaking career, but which one of his movies is the best (and which one is the worst)? Roth first broke out with his low-budget debut feature Cabin Fever, about a group of college kids who travel to a remote cabin in the woods, where they encounter a deadly flesh-eating virus. Cabin Fever put Roth on the map and established him as one of the most exciting new voices in horror cinema.
What followed was a surprisingly varied career.

Borderlands' Rotten Tomatoes score shouldn't shock anyone given director Eli Roth's history with critics. The movie mixes sci-fi, action, and comedy, featuring Cate Blanchett leading a ragtag crew. Despite its popularity as a video game, Borderlands flopped at the box office due to its predictable plot.
Although Borderlands might have a disastrous Rotten Tomatoes score, this shouldn't come as a surprise thanks to director Eli Roths history with critics. Borderlands is an adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name. Thanksgiving was a critical and box office success in 2023 with an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%. Borderlands, on the other hand, received negative reviews and was a commercial failure, debuting with a 0% score. Eli Roth prioritized Thanksgiving over finishing Borderlands, leading to speculation about his involvement in the latter.
It's evident that Eli Roth made his acclaimed 2023 horror film Thanksgiving at the same time he made Borderlands. Although Borderlands features a star-studded cast, including Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film has become a critical and commercial failure following its wide theatrical release on August 9, 2024. Borderlands debuted with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 0% before slightly increasing to its current score of 10% as of the time of writing. It’s a bad time to be Eli Roth.
A miscalculation of near-mythic proportions, “Borderlands” has a whopping six percent on Rotten Tomatoes heading into its opening weekend. Those bad reviews (IndieWire gave it a “C-“) are the least of the “Hostel” filmmaker’s problems, as Lionsgate’s misguided video game adaptation has inspired assessments of not only the director’s filmography but also whether his impact on pop culture has been at all valuable.
This ranking can’t account for all of that. If you’re a fan of the types of genre films that Roth makes, read on. If you’re not, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and enjoy the “Borderlands” dogpile — a massive multiplayer online affair now available free of charge.
Last year, Roth’s meaty and murderous “Thanksgiving” did well for the provocateur. The seasonal holiday slasher, starring Nell Verlaque, Patrick Dempsey, and Addison Rae among others,...

In recent years the conversation around adequate representation in all aspects of filmmaking, has been gaining a new momentum. Audiences demand for a diverse range of actors onscreen and age is one of the many factors. It is a known fact that actors in Hollywood have a certain time-limit, beyond which they do not receive enough offers.
Recently director Eli Roth restarted the discussion around the industry’s treatment of older actors and stated how they tend to disregard their talent just due to age. He then proceeded to name two senior actors he approached for his movie Borderlands, further cementing that age doesn’t matter to him.

The article will contain spoilers for The Strangers: Chapter 1
The Strangers: Chapter 1 failed to justify its existence as a reboot in a long-running horror franchise. The film did not deliver on its promised backstory and failed to revamp the original story, relying on clichs. While The Strangers: Chapter 1 was a box office success, it was poorly received by audiences and critics alike, demonstrating the issue with the horror genre's overreliance on reboots and sequels.
Reboots, remakes, and sequels always existed in the horror genre. Whether it was beloved 80s classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th getting CGI-heavy remakes in the 2000s or golden age Hollywood horror flicks like House of Wax getting modern makeovers back in 2005, horror had a long history of tacking on entries to long-running franchises or remaking well-received original movies to mixed results. Summer horror films turn idyllic vacations into terrifying nightmares, adding a sinister twist to familiar settings. The shift in tone from relaxation to survival in these films plays a trick on audiences, evoking fears of violence. Psychological battles, grotesque visuals, and eerie settings make summer horror movies like Jaws and Us chilling and unforgettable.
Summer is associated with relaxing and adventurous trips, but a few horror films have audiences reconsidering their seasonal vacation. Films such as Us and Friday the 13th place their characters in life-or-death scenarios in settings that are meant to evoke positive memories. Summer horror films are terrifying on their own, but it's because of the added element of vacation that the film's characters are caught off-guard.
What starts as a dream of an idyllic getaway is violently interrupted and a fight for one's survival suddenly becomes necessary. It's a shift in tone that happens to play...

Horror director Eli Roth might be known as a purveyor of torture porn movies like "Hostel" and "Cabin Fever," but he has a soft side when it comes to animals. Speaking to Total Film about his holiday slasher "Thanksgiving," he confessed to having a problem with movies where a murder victim has a pet. "I can't enjoy the movie until I know someone's gonna feed that pet. Even though I know it's a story, I know it's not real. I'm like, but what about the cat?"
Roth has a pet of his own -- a French bulldog -- who gave him the inspiration he needed when pitching a "Borderlands" movie to Lionsgate. "Whenever I take her for a walk and she has to go to the bathroom, she won't let me look at her," Roth explains in the latest issue of SFX magazine. "I have to look away because she gets really shy.

Along with most Horror franchises that skyrocketed in the ’80s, Child’s Play had plummeted by the mid ’90s. But in 1996, Scream became a pivotal moment for the genre. Wes Craven’s self-referential slasher helped revive mainstream interest in Horror. And it gave birth to a new wave of slashers that featured characters with smarter dialogue, who made less stupid decisions (for the most part), and delivered the all-important meta humor. That wave included a bride, mostly dressed in black leather. Bride of Chucky checked all the boxes of the updated slasher formula, especially when it came to the satire. Modern horror movie remakes often tone down excessive violence from original films for various reasons. Some remakes, like Cabin Fever (2016) and Suspiria (2018), may lose impact by reducing gore. The Last House On The Left (2009) remake, while polished, may lack the shocking brutality of the original.
Warning: This article contains discussion of sexual violence and disturbing themes
Although it's often assumed that audiences' tolerance for violence has increased over the years, many horror movie remakes prove that, in reality, earlier films can be even more brutal than later projects. While, in general, it's true that viewers have become more exposed to violence than they were when cinema was in its infancy, modern horror films do not have a monopoly on brutality. In fact, some of the most violent and shocking movies ever made have been substantially toned down in their remakes.

We all love a "fun" horror movie, right? I'm talking about horror that feels like the cinematic equivalent of a roller coaster — fast, exhilarating, scary, but ultimately harmless. You buy the ticket and take the ride. But one of the things I love about the horror genre is that it's so damn flexible. On one hand, you can have fun horror movies like I just mentioned. And then there's the complete opposite: horror movies that make you squirm. Horror movies designed to make your skin crawl. Bugs, monsters, blood, body horror — the type of stuff that makes you feel like you need to take a shower after watching it. Those are the types of horror movies we're highlighting here — gnarly stuff, gross stuff, stuff that's going to make you feel more than a little icky. Be warned: it's about to get disgusting up in here.

2023 was not seen as a strong year for the Walt Disney Company. It was a year of underperformance as fans seemed to be demanding something fresh from the House of Mouse, leaving many marquee titles to come in well below expectations. Still, Walt Disney Pictures produced or co-produced 11 in-house movies last year, including reimaged classics like The Little Mermaid and a final outing for movie icon Indiana Jones.
Some of them were from the big-name franchises that everyone's heard of, while others dropped straight onto Disney+ without much fanfare. Many of these releases were underwhelming by most measures, but there is still a unique charm and polish to Disney movies that can make them a worthwhile watch.

Even Eli Roth can’t believe that two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett was willing to learn to twirl guns and shoot baddies in “Borderlands,” the director’s gonzo adaptation of the popular video game.
Roth noted that since people loved seeing Blanchett wield a baton in “Tár,” where she portrayed a fictional world-famous conductor embroiled in controversy, the filmmaker said he might as well “put a flamethrower in her hand.”
In “Borderlands,” Blanchett sports a fiery red bob and is surrounded by the starry ensemble of Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black and “Barbie” breakout Ariana Greenblatt. The story follows Blanchett as Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past. She reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora and forms an unexpected alliance to find the missing daughter of Atlas.

The auteur theory argues that certain film directors have such artistic and personal control that they are, in essence, the authors of the movie. The term is used for important filmmakers with an unmistakable style, like Alfred Hitchcock or Martin Scorsese, who have their own brand. This idea isn't limited to elite directors as it also applies to creators of trash cinema.
Cult movies are often low-budget, bizarre films that are so bad that they're good but generally a result of some kind of fluke or simply a one-off anomaly. There are, however, a select few directors who specialize in weird movie-making and have established their own unique flavor. While never gaining the recognition of their prestigious peers, these Cult Auteurs have left a zany and entertaining legacy.

A spinoff of the film franchise, “Freddy’s Nightmares” was an anthology series starring the original Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund. Quentin Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the most influential directors in Hollywood. There is one filmmaker who was influenced and guided by Tarantino and went on to become a prominent name in the horror genre. Eli Roth’s film, Restaurant Dogs, was a clear homage to the Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs. The duo later became good friends and collaborated on several projects over the years.

Video game movies have come a long way in the last several years, with the likes of "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," among others, making great strides. As a result, many Hollywood studios are turning to the gaming world in hopes of finding the next great big-screen franchise. Eli Roth is a filmmaker whose name has become synonymous with visceral horror. He was a key figure in the loose collection of filmmakers known as the Splat Pack, which also included names like Alexandre Aja and Rob Zombie. These directors made low-budget independent horrors with tons of blood, gore, and general carnage. Roth's central contributions to the movement were his first two movies, Cabin Fever and Hostel.

In 2023, Eli Roth finally released his highly-anticipated film Thanksgiving, much to the delight of horror fans. While Thanksgiving is a gory affair, it's also a simple and fun slasher. You walk away from it with a smile on your face. The same can't be said for Roth's earlier works. His first feature film, 2002's Cabin Fever, is well crafted, but it's so dark and disturbing, with such realistic gore, that it leaves viewers shaken. Then came 2006's Hostel. Along with Saw two years before, it helped birth the unfortunate-named "torture porn" trope. Hostel, with its story of young American travelers in Europe who are abducted by rich men who pay to kill them, is as bleak as it gets. There is some hope among the bloodshed in its ending, but the original finale — one that was not only written but filmed — was so depressing that Eli Roth decided he couldn't show it.

When director Michael Winner and screenwriter Wendell Mayes adapted Brian Garfield's novel "Death Wish," it's doubtful that they had any idea they'd be launching a film franchise that would change the landscape of vigilante thrillers forever, and solidify Charles Bronson as one of the greatest stars of action cinema. The "Death Wish" films start out as a twisted character study of a man named Paul Kersey as he slowly descends into a life of vengeance and violence, bearing arms and serving as a one-man judge, jury, and executioner. There's a real allure to righting wrongs outside of the American justice system, but as Kearsey's arc shows, his desire to kill has perhaps always been a part of him -- which makes him part of the problem.
As the franchise went on, the "Death Wish" films cared less and less about the moral conundrums of its hero and instead wanted...
