Dadı from retrespective

As I'm watching the reruns of the show right now , I reminisce about my childhood. "Dadı" was my favorite show as a I grew up and while watching it right now I can understand why. It's humorous, it's catchy and it is entertaining. However, I now understand why non of the adults liked the show, the acting is bad. It is the exact replica of "The nanny", which I watched long after I watched "Dadı", and the main difference is the quality of its actors; as well as the jokes about Jewish life. Although I still enjoy the jokes "Dadı" contains, the deliverance of those jokes lacks of talent. Even Haldun Dormen who used to be counted as one of the greatest actors of his time, now fades away, and can't deliver a speech. All and all, it was important for Turkish channels to have one of its first successful sit-coms to make an example out of and to advance towards such shows like "Avrupa Yakası".

Fran = Melek?

This show can be best summed up as 'What "The Nanny" looks like in Turkey.' Essentially the stories are the same with a simple changing of names for both characters and places to better suit the country of Turkey.

Although the children and even the nanny herself appear somewhat younger than their American counterparts they are essentially the same characters with almost identical personalities, notably the relationship between nanny and employer, and rivalry between butler and business partner.

Perhaps one thing we can all be thankful for is that Gulben Ergen lacks Fran Drescher's nasally voice and annoying laugh.

She was working in a bridal shop in Ankara, Turkey... more's the pity

This is airing as I speak on our national "ethnic" broadcaster, SBS (which helpfully provides English subtitles), and very peculiar it is too. Basically, the show looks and plays like "The Nanny" - near-identical sets, same multi-camera set-up & camera positions, a cast that bears a general resemblance to the original actors, scripts that are one-to-one adaptations of the original scripts (the show is licensed, not a knockoff) - but it is decidedly NOT "The Nanny": no more Yiddish jokes/Jewish references; no more jokes about Broadway shows; no snotty English butler; no live audience (and boy, does it show), just canned laughter. Gülben Ergen is talented enough in her own way, but she's no Fran Drescher, and a show like this really revolves around its Nanny, so you do miss her presence.
