Judge John Deed is a powerful British legal drama starring Martin Shaw as the title character. He is not any regular high court judge, he is a charismatic, fit, good-looking judge that speaks out against petty and bureaucratic rules that most don’t speak against. He avoids the traditionalism of the system that is forced on […]

Judges have a long-standing passion for upholding the law and protecting the public they swore to protect. But not all have the same level of commitment to speaking out against the petty rules and bureaucracy that don’t allow them to properly serve justice as the title character on the legal drama, ‘Judge John Deed.’ The […]

The sequel in the long-running creature franchise, which will once again bring back Michael Gross as the gun-toting Burt Gummer, was originally going under the title of Tremors: Island Fury. The movie is in the can and is expected to arrive later this year in the fall. Now, we have word that the title has changed ahead of the release to Tremors: Shrieker Island. Additionally, the latest entry in the series has been handed a PG-13 rating, which is right in line with what we've come to expect in the past.
Per the Motion Picture Association of America, Tremors: Shrieker Island is rated PG-13 "for creature violence, language throughout, some gore and suggestive/drug references." While no full synopsis has officially been revealed by Universal Pictures at this time, the latest sequel is said...

With a new TV show on the horizon, why Lord Of The Rings remains so special to Andrew, and how his perspective has changed...
This article contains spoilers for Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion.
First, some context.
I’d been introduced to Tolkien through The Hobbit, my Grandad’s hardback edition with the lovely blue, black and green illustrations on the cover, followed by the infamously long (physically as well as temporally) BBC radio adaptations of The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings, which were brought on long car journeys to take the edge off the M6. When I was six my parents recorded the 1978 Ralph Bakshi animated version of Lord Of The Rings off the telly, and due to the volume of rewatching I specifically remember the white box with a rainbow coloured motif on the front (I fully expect someone to...

Starz released news today about the casting of two more roles for Outlander Season 3.

A Chinese man with a deep knowledge of Eastern medicine, Mr. Willoughby is a talented poet in exile, with an even deeper love of women.
Willoughby, a confidante of Jamie Fraser, speaks English well, but hides it when it suits him. He is even more of an outsider than Claire in 18th century Scotland.
New Zealand native Gary Young is a graduate of the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in London and Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School.
Young most recently appeared in the Netflix feature Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny and the Australian miniseries Secret City.
He also featured in Xena: Warrior Princess, Power Rangers and Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake.

Second World War drama begins UK shoot; first image revealed.
Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating has joined the ensemble cast of period drama Another Mother’s Son, which also includes Jenny Seagrove, John Hannah, Amanda Abbington, Peter Wight and Susan Hampshire.
Principal photography is underway on the film, which will shoot for six weeks across Somerset and the South West of England.
Another Mother’s Son is set during the Second World War, when the island of Jersey was occupied by the Nazis.
The film is based on the true story of Louisa Gould, who took in an escaped Russian Pow and hid him over the course of the war, amid growing tension as it became clear that British wartime leader Winston Churchill would not risk an assault to re-capture the island and the community began to fray under pressures of hunger, occupation and divided loyalty.
BAFTA-winning Chris Menaul (Summer In February) directs a screenplay by Jenny Lecoat.

The Judge John Deed star remembers the 60s at the Royal Court, and being discovered by the great auteur
By 1969 I'd done a few roles for Sidney Bernstein's Granada Television, which was the place for new, dangerous drama, and a couple of plays at the Royal Court. I was in their first revival of Look Back in Anger. John Osborne came along to rehearsals a lot – he was shocked at how gritty and visceral we'd made the production. It was an incredibly exciting time – I felt part of a movement of dissent. I did the premiere of David Storey's The Contractor, with the great Lindsay Anderson, and then I did a play called Cancer, which was later renamed Moonchildren.
Cancer was based on the experiences of its writer, Michael Weller. It's about a group of students who rent a flat. It's a very funny and very realistic play,...

Actor Martin Shaw talks about working with Polanski, the dumbing-down of his profession, and the death of his fellow Professional Lewis Collins
How did you become interested in acting?
It started at school. I didn't have a healthy attitude towards education: it took me a long time to work out that I was there for me, not for my teachers. There were only two teachers I could really respond to – one taught English, the other drama. When we were doing Shakespeare, it seemed crystal-clear.
What was your big breakthrough?
In 1968, I appeared at the Royal Court in the first major revival of Look Back in Anger (1). Then I starred in several other plays there. Roman Polanski saw one and offered me the role of Banquo in his film of Macbeth. Everything took off from there.
What have you sacrificed for your art?

Stage and screen actor known for his roles in The Three Musketeers and Young Winston
In 1971 the actor Simon Ward, who has died after a long illness aged 70, was plucked from virtual obscurity by the director Richard Attenborough to play Winston Churchill in the film Young Winston, supported by actors of longstanding reputation including Robert Shaw, Anne Bancroft and John Mills. After the film's release a year later, Ward found himself a star on several continents. "That was a frightening role," he recalled. "You were playing someone whom everyone had very strong feelings about. As a movie, it had the most extraordinary mixture of adventure – the fighting, riding, running up and down mountains – and some wonderful dialogue scenes shot at Shepperton."
Swashbuckling and tongue-in-cheek slapstick were added to the mix when Ward, known for his aristocratic looks and high cheekbones, was cast as the Duke of Buckingham in Richard Lester's The Three Musketeers...

It would seem del Toro isn’t too busy with Hollywood projects like The Hobbit to lend his name to up and comers, and judging from the description given below, Shiver could be similar to 2001's The Others mixed with some spooky Spanish folklore.

Updated: Deadline have a follow-up on this earlier story claiming producer Richard Whelan is now in L.A. trying to lockdown a cast for the remake with the obvious & usual bunch of names said to be wanted;
Brit actors Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler and Jason Statham are cited (no word on whether they are up for Bodie or Doyle), with vets Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman apparently on the wishlist to play their boss, who was Scottish in the show. The movie will be an origin story depicting how the duo came to work for the CI5.
Statham is probably favourite to end up with one of the roles as he just made Lionsgate UK’s second film to date Blitz, that’s out May 6th, and he is Britain’s box office action star answer to Bruce Willis after all.
As we said below, no director is attached after Neil Marshall (The Descent,...

It is a very light week for horror DVDs with a few re-releases on Blu-ray of newer classics, starting with the "New Flesh" that is Videodrome as well as Guillermo del Toro's Cronos.
Other releases this week that are worthy of any mention include a blood-soaked whale-watching trip, an entomologist who started a human collection instead, and a television mini-series about exorcism.
Videodrome (Criterion Collection) (1983)
Directed by David Cronenberg
Starring James Woods, Deborah Harry, Sonja Smits, Peter Dvorsky, Leslie Carlson
When Max Renn goes looking for edgy new shows for his sleazy cable TV station, he stumbles across the pirate broadcast of a hyperviolent torture show called Videodrome. As he unearths the origins of the program, he embarks on a hallucinatory journey into a shadow world of right-wing conspiracies, sadomasochistic sex games, and bodily transformation. Renn's ordinary life dissolves around him, and he finds himself at the center of...

The actor told the Radio Times that he would be interested in playing the Doctor if the role fitted into his acting schedule. "Who knows, in a couple of years, I might go down on my knees to play the Doctor," he said. "If I could do it for three months and do other stuff the rest of the year, I'd do it." British actor Martin Shaw shocked theater-goers this week when he collapsed on stage during the latest performance of his play. The 65 year old is currently starring in a production of The Country Girl at the Severn Theatre in Shrewsbury, England, but Wednesday, August 18 show was halted after the TV actor fell ill and fainted.
The curtain was brought down as medics rushed to attend to Shaw, and after 20 minutes the play resumed with an understudy taking the star's place. A representative for the "Judge John Deed" actor has blamed the collapse on Shaw's ongoing medical problems.
The rep told Britain's The Sun, "He passed out because he has a cracked rib, a chest infection and is on antibiotics. He probably shouldn't have been on stage but didn't want to disappoint his fans."...

Martin Shaw has collapsed on stage, according to reports. The Judge John Deed actor began "mumbling" his lines before passing out during a performance of The Country Girl at Shrewsbury's Severn Theatre last night, claims The Sun. The 65-year-old apparently whispered "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" as co-star Jenny Seagrove ran to his aid and the curtain dropped. Paramedics from St John's Ambulance shortly arrived on the scene. An audience member said: "One minute he was acting, then he was a mumbling mess. After a 20-minute interval he was replaced by his (more)...

Christopher Cazenove, who has died of septicaemia aged 64, always dreamed of being a film star, although his father – a brigadier in the Coldstream Guards – wanted him to follow in his military footsteps. Ironically, when Cazenove fulfilled his acting ambitions, he made his name as the blue-eyed, clean-cut hero Lieutenant Richard Gaunt in The Regiment (1972-73). The drama series, following a 1970 pilot, traced the fortunes of the Cotswolds Regiment at the turn of the 19th century – from the Boer War to service in India – through the lives of two families, the Gaunts and the Brights. Cazenove's fame was confirmed when he was featured on the cover of Radio Times.

I Sell the Dead which was well received at Tad will be opening the fest. Also playing will be The Broken Lizard's latest film The Slammin' Salmon, and Mum and Dad.
