The United States of Leland was quietly released in 2003 to very little fanfare. Starring Ryan Gosling in one of his earliest roles as the titular lead, the indie drama delves into the psyche of Leland P. Fitzgerald, a teenager grappling with his own morality, or lack thereof, after inexplicably murdering a young boy. The film explores themes of loneliness, morality, and the fallout of sudden tragedy on those left behind, but despite its ambitious premise and star-studded cast—which includes Don Cheadle, Jena Malone, and Michelle Williams—the film was met with mixed reviews, criticized for being overly melancholic and failing to deliver on anything of substance. Roger Ebert called the film “morally muddled," and while this criticism of the film is certainly valid, decades later, Leland might also be seen as a quiet meditation on the danger of emotional detachment and the far-reaching consequences of violence. So, is The...

Ryan Gosling has been earning rave reviews for his 100 percent committed performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig's subversive comedic hit, Barbie. The notices have been so good that many believe Gosling is likely guaranteed an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. It should come as no surprise that the actor is good, given the fact that he already has a Golden Globe Award and two Academy Award nominations, but it does prove that Gosling is an accomplished comedic performer that should play things for humor a bit more moving forward.
Gosling's career began on the more lighthearted side at the age of 13 on Disney Channel's The Mickey Mouse Club. Running from 1993-1995, the variety television allowed the actor to showcase his sense of humor along with his musical skills alongside future mega performers that included Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake.

Despite being considered one of the biggest stars in the industry, Ryan Gosling reveals The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes doubted his leading man potential. The 2004 romantic drama chronicled the lives of poor lumber mill worker Noah and wealthy heiress Allie as they fall in love one summer but struggle to overcome her parents' reservations in the years that follow. Though garnering mixed reviews for its cliched writing, Gosling and Rachel McAdams' performances were praised and it has remained a fan-favorite in the near-20-years since its release.
Ahead of his role in this summer's Barbie, Gosling sat down with GQ for a career-spanning profile interview. When exploring his breakout role in The Notebook, the actor recalled that the movie's director, Nick Cassavetes, had a bizarre reason for hiring him, feeling he was not a conventional leading man. Teresa Wright: Later years (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon.") Teresa Wright and Robert Anderson were divorced in 1978. They would remain friends in the ensuing years.[1] Wright spent most of the last decade of her life in Connecticut, making only sporadic public appearances. In 1998, she could be seen with her grandson, film producer Jonah Smith, at New York's Yankee Stadium, where she threw the ceremonial first pitch.[2] Wright also became involved in the Greater New York chapter of the Als Association. (The Pride of the Yankees subject, Lou Gehrig, died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 1941.) The week she turned 82 in October 2000, Wright attended the 20th anniversary celebration of Somewhere in Time, where she posed for pictures with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. In March 2003, she was a guest at the 75th Academy Awards, in the segment showcasing Oscar-winning actors of the past. Two years later,...

Ryan Gosling moved into the director’s chair in 2013. Though it was cheered at its reception, Lost River (formerly titled “How to Catch a Monster”) it was jeered by a good majority critics after its premiere screening in the Un Certain Regard section at that Cannes Film Festival this past May. Since then, not a word. Not a sound. No North American premiere, just a release date planned for next February in France. If Warner Bros. still had an indie label, the distinctly art-house film wouldn’t be shrouded in release date mystery. My thinking is: the studio simply don’t know what to do with it. In comes Sundance. A second home to the actor for two segments in his career: the formative years (The United States of Leland, The Believer, The Slaughter Rule) and the break out years (Half Nelson and Blue Valentine). Could Sundance programmers reel in this distinctive,...

Some of you (hopefully) may have noticed my recent profile on the late, great Robert Mitchum. In the course of researching the piece, I came across the fun tidbit that Mitchum had been a favorite of film critic Roger Ebert.
The mind rarely works in linear fashion, and I suspect mine may even be more chaotic than most. That item pinballed around the ol’ noggin, and, somewhere in all that bouncing here and there, triggered a bit of nostalgia. Probably because I was working on the piece during Oscar week, the mention of Ebert reminded me that there had been a time when this would’ve been the point in the year I’d be looking forward to the annual “If We Gave Out the Oscars” (or something like that) show done by Ebert along with his on-screen partner of nearly two dozen years, fellow film critic Gene Siskel.

Sometime late this month (or at the beginning of the month of December) the Sundance Film Festival will start unveiling the line-up for their 2012 edition. In an effort to give our readers a heads up on what we'll most likely be seeing at the fest, I've put together yet another predictions list. Caution: I cast a wide circle with a total of 80 predix so I'm bound to get some wrong, but as I've proven in prior years, I'm spot on with at least half the titles you'll find here. One of the most common questions I receive is: how do I know what'll be at the fest and where do I get my information? The answer: I've been going there seven years straight, been privileged to share professional relationships with those in the indie and foreign film sphere, but unless you're one of the programmers led by John Cooper, then...

There have been many movies made about couples falling in love and many made about couples falling out of love. Few films have dared to brave showing both. But that's precisely what Derek Cianfrance's "Blue Valentine" does, offering a raw, real portrayal of a young couple as they take the first tentative steps toward love—and then showing them six years later, when everything has fallen apart. It's a devastating, emotional journey, and Cianfrance is aided by two of the best actors of their generation: Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. As Dean and Cindy, the pair goes from passionate and young to jaded and aged in the blink of an eye—literally, thanks to the juxtaposition of scenes from the past and present. The pair transform themselves physically, adding weight and, in Gosling's case, losing hair. But the actors also change internally, beautifully capturing the resentful silences, the meaningful glares,...

Washington, King linking up with 'Charles'
Regina King and Kerry Washington have been cast in Crusader Entertainment's biopic Unchain My Heart: The Ray Charles Story, with Jamie Foxx to star as the legendary musician and Mark Rydell directing. Production begins at the end of March. A domestic distributor is expected to come aboard the project shortly, with Warner Bros. Pictures emerging as a top contender. Sundance 'all over the map'
Unveiling a lineup that they found difficult to categorize, Sundance organizers revealed Monday the partial roster of films that have been invited to screen for the 2003 festival in Park City. "In the 13 years I've been doing the festival, it's the least-categorizable year that I've seen," said fest director Geoffrey Gilmore upon announcing the categories of Documentary and Dramatic Competition, American Showcase and American Spectrum. "It's difficult to draw tendencies and themes from these works, especially in Dramatic Competition and the premieres section. Each one of these films is aesthetically different. It's as hard a group to categorize than we've ever had. It's just completely all over the map." That "all over the map" theme is displayed in the Dramatic Competition lineup by such films as Tom McCarthy's The Station Agent, about a dwarf who takes up residence in an abandoned train depot in New Jersey; Matthew Ryan Hoge's The United States of Leland, centering on a troubled teen who murders a retarded boy; the musical summer camp comedy Camp, from director Todd Graff; Shari Springer and Robert Pulcini's American Splendor, about comic book hero Everyman Harvey Pekar; and Mark Decena's Dopamine, about a repressed computer animator who creates an artificial creature and falls in love.
