When Halle Berry made her big-screen debut as the crack-addicted Vivian in the most harrowing section of Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever," she put the entire world on notice that she was going to be an actor first and a movie star second. Obviously, she would quickly learn early in her career to play the Hollywood game and accept thinly-written roles that asked her to do little more than look like one of the most breathtakingly beautiful people on the planet, but she never went more than a year or two without challenging herself. This was particularly difficult to do, given the dearth of complex roles being written for Black women at the time.
Berry was 10 years into her film acting career when she landed the role that would change everything for her. As Leticia Musgrove in Marc Forster's bleak 2001 drama "Monster's Ball," she summoned up a fierce symphony of heartbreak,...

Aloha! The natural beauty of Hawaii has long inspired and captivated filmmakers longing to show off the soaring cliffs and clear blue waters, in addition to the rich Polynesian culture. Many romantic comedies and coming-of-age films have taken advantage of the stirring imagery to evoke paradise, spirit, and dreamy tenderness. But there's tragedy and drama to be found there too, given the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, as well as the many wartime epics that have been made showing Hawaii at its most tragic.
Given the geographic variety of the state, it's no surprise that a diverse range of stories have been told using the islands and its people, and here, we're taking a look at the 10 best films set in Hawaii.

With many decades having passed since the 1983 release of John Carpenter's Christine, it's safe to say that the movie's cast has done a lot since then. Carpenter's horror film was written by Bill Phillips, based on Stephen King's horror novel of the same name. It follows a teenage nerd named Arnie Cunningham, who becomes obsessed with his new car, the titular Christine. Like the author's other works, the story takes a dark turn, with Christine revealed to be one of Stephen King's many killer cars prevalent in his novels and short stories.
Given its focus on teenage characters, the film adaptation starred a number of young actors who were just starting out in their careers, including Alexandra Paul, John Stockwell, and Kelly Preston. While relative unknowns in 1983, they've mostly gone on to have long careers in the many years since Christine's premiere, becoming much bigger names than they...

The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

During a new episode of his Life Is Short podcast that was released Tuesday, Long was joined by Bosworth, where the pair confirmed that they got engaged earlier this year after the Barbarian star popped the question. The pair generated media speculation when she debuted a ring at the Vanity Fair Oscar party last month, which the stars confirmed on the podcast was indeed an engagement ring.
“We are embarking on a new chapter,” Bosworth, 40, said on the episode. Long, 44, then said, “People have been asking because Catherine wore a ring that I gave to her when I asked her — well, not when I asked her, but shortly after I asked her — to marry me.”

Kate Bosworth and Justin Long have confirmed their engagement - and revealed the sweet and personal way he proposed. After 40-year-old "Blue Crush" star Bosworth debuted a 10-carat ring at the Vanity Fair Oscars party on March 12, People reported on March 24 that multiple sources said the couple are set to tie the knot. Now, in the April 4 edition of his podcast, "Life Is Short with Justin Long," the couple wanted to share the news, themselves, through a "loving conversation."
Long said he had a proposal planned around Bosworth's birthday in January but said a month before that "things changed." Instead, "It was a moment where it just felt so organic and it felt connected to something very, very deeply, profoundly personal that we were going through, like, a real life change, and so it came out in a very organic way," he said of popping the question. The bell just rang, school is out for summer. Maybe it’s out forever—leaving school behind as our heroes and antiheroes spend long, hot days laying about in the city or countryside, anticipating college dreams or fearing a return to the classroom. Or, more likely, not thinking of studies at all, just anticipating the next summer day and how to score more thrills. As the season winds down, here is a mix that is an ode to the teenage summer—so wonderfully captured in many films—a choice selection that evokes endless possibilities: sweat, love, passion, booze, drugs, and questions of the great unknown just around the corner. The characters of these summertime stories are either breaking hearts, heartbroken, running from hell or somewhere lost in between. Some favorite moments include the confusion, chaos and otherworldly essence of Gheorghe Zamfir’s flute from the unforgettable score for Peter Weir...

Kate Bosworth didn’t let early 2000s Hollywood crush her ahead of her big break in “Blue Crush.”
The actress reflected on her breakout role and easily what could have been a bikini-clad “Girls Gone Wild” parody of a sports surfing film.
“I was reading a lot of scripts in 2001, and the parts for women were certainly not multidimensional,” Bosworth told Vulture. “The ones that were exhibiting a lot of depth were quite competitive, and I was a ‘no one’ at the time. Being a young blonde girl, there were a lot of roles that were stereotypical bitchy, dumb, or vapid. Not getting roles wasn’t frustrating because that’s the name of the game, but the stereotypes felt disappointing.”
She added, “If you remember the early 2000s, they could be pretty cruel for young girls, so I was feeling a little dejected.”

What's summer all about?
It's about beaches, baseball, camping, road trips, amusement parks, treasure hunting, globetrotting to exotic locations, and sharing a pitcher of margaritas with friends.
These films and TV shows capture the essence of summer.

Set in Hawaii, Blue Crush is about women surfers working to achieve the dream of surfing the famed North Shore.
Blue Crush balances the glamorous -- a pro-football player romances the lead character -- with the not-so-glamorous -- the heroines spend their days' training and working as hotel maids.
Most of all, it has plenty of surf action and waves -- those gigantic, gorgeous North Shore waves. You can stream Blue Crush on Redbox, Amazon Prime Video, or Tubi.

The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. Since its release in 2002, earning $55 million at the box office to become one of the summer's sleeper hits, Blue Crush has remained a cult classic, thanks to its depiction of female friendships and a young woman trying to make her mark in a male-dominated sport. And there was even buzz in 2017 that a Blue...

Kate Bosworth shines in a juicy role as a cigar-smoking oil matriarch in this drama directed by veteran actor Edward James Olmos
Edward James Olmos is an actor-film-maker with a long history of advocating for Latino screen representation, and he has cast himself as something of what you might call a “magical Latino” stock character in this environmental courtroom drama. He plays Santiago, the right-hand man of Fred Stern (David Strathairn), a recently widowed California almond farmer, who is locked in a legal battle with a big bad oil firm. Santi always has some old-west wisdom to offer his old pal, such as “Don’t confuse fightin’ with livin’”; or “Who knows the true meaning of ‘covfefe’?”
It’s a forgivable indulgence, since The Devil Has a Name is also providing juicy roles for several other character actors who have long been underserved and unappreciated. Former child star Haley Joel Osment...

HBO Max has a lot to offer in August, with titles to look forward to including the premiere of a brand new Seth Rogen movie called “An American Pickle” on Aug. 6, and Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight” out Aug. 1.
The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.
